RACEVIEW STATE
SCHOOL
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
(Yr 5)
Dear Parents & Carers
It’s hard to believe that we
are at the end of another
term! Reflecting on Term 3,
we have had some big
successes; Junior and Senior
Athletics Carnivals, Book
Week, a few Student of the
Month awards ceremonies
and various year level
excursions spring to mind.
Of course, there are many
more minor successes that
go seemingly unnoticed, in
and around the classrooms
and school. From an
anxious and shy Prep
student that is now
confidently speaking with
peers and teachers, to the
early readers that have that
breakthrough moment when
their reading becomes more
fluent and comprehension
soars. This does not happen
by chance.
We have great teachers
working with great students,
who have SPORTy attitudes
and supportive parents and
carers that encourage them
at home.
To all staff, parents and
carers, thank you for your
hard work this term.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
(Prep—Year1)
Enrol now for Prep 2018 Enrolment applications for in-catchment and siblings starting Prep with us in 2018 are now being accepted. Please request an enrolment form
from the office. This will ensure you receive direct communication about the upcoming enrolment interviews and our exciting transition
program. It would be greatly appreciated if our current school community members could relay this information to anyone with children ready
for Prep in 2018.
Our 2017 Preppies While we have begun welcoming our 2018 Prep families, this has prompted me to reflect on just
how far our Preps have come since the beginning of this year. Many of our Prep students are
now reading short, decodable, predicable texts. They are having a go at writing using their letter
and sounds knowledge and have gained immense confidence with orally presenting rhymes and
opinions about familiar texts with others. We are so proud of how far they have all come
socially, emotionally and academically. Well done to our fantastic Preps and the very dedicated
Prep team!
Term 4 Curriculum Planning
Prep and Year 1 teams have been working with the Acting Head of Curriculum, Charmaine Statham on developing their teaching and learning
plans for Term 4. This is important to ensure a clear and consistent understanding of the assessments and teaching and learning expectations.
Moderation Year level teams, including Prep and Year 1, engaged in moderation early this week. This process helps teachers engage in professional dialogue
to develop a common understanding of standards and expectations of student work and deepens curriculum knowledge. It ensures that
assessment decisions made around student work are consistent across all classes on the year level. That means an A in 1C is the same standard
as an A in 1E.

(Yr 2—Yr 3)
This week sees the final days of Term 3 and a countdown to a well deserved rest for our teachers and students.
STORY ARTS FESTIVAL
The feedback from the teachers and Year 2 students about their trip to the Story Arts Festival last week was very
positive. A great day meeting authors and illustrators was had by all. The staff and students are extremely grateful
towards our librarian, Mrs Frazer for coordinating such a successful excursion. It was very pleasing to hear that more
than one of the presenters commented to Mrs Frazer about the outstanding behaviour and participation demonstrated
by our students. Well done, Year 2 classes on being wonderful representatives of our school whilst you were out in
the community.
OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY
Last Thursday, many classes took the opportunity to celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day by conducting one of their
lessons out in the fresh air. Thank you to Mr Winwood for his enthusiasm in promoting this day. I was able to talk to
some students from 2E and 2G during the day and they enjoyed moving their History and Maths lesson in the great
outdoors, immensely.
YEAR 2 ACTIVITIES
Our Year 2 students were busy over the past fortnight putting the final touches to their information report about
koalas and bats. It was evident that many of these authors were pleased with their final products. When I visited 2G,
they were busy learning about seasons and months.

YEAR 3 WRITING
On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of working with the Year 3 teachers when they met to moderate the writing
assessment task that each student had completed during the term. Students had read the book “The Lorax” by Dr
Suess and retold the story from the point of view of another character. The level of creativity and skills used by these
young authors was commendable. Here is a wonderful example from Charlee in 3C:
The One Once-ler
Back in the day, the swomee swans sang, the humming fish hummed and us Bar-ba-loots
played. The sun shone, the water glistened. If you happened to walk by, you would think you
were dreaming. It was the best place to live. I lived with all the other Bar-ba-loots under the
newest Truffula-trees near the sparkling pond listening to the breeze. That was before the
selfish, foolish Once-ler came. Then it all changed.
It was a normal summer’s day. I was minding my own business sitting under a hot pink
truffula tree when in came an old, wooden cart pulled by a grumpy, brown donkey. I saw the
words “Once-ler Wagon”. Out of the wagon came an oldish man with long green gloves. He
looked as if he had a million enemies. I guessed this man was the Once-ler. Then as he
walked out of the cart I saw him give me a look as if to say, “Back off!” At that moment, he
did something terrible. He pulled out a rusty old axe and pulled it back so it was resting on
his shoulder. I watched in horror as the pink truffula tree fell down leaving only the stump
behind.
After that one tree was cut down, it only multiplied. Suddenly, he was building big factories. With all the trees gone, we could
not live much longer as we did not have food, water or shade. Our friend the Lorax sent us off. As I dragged my friend, I saw
the swomee swans flying from above. I looked to the lake and saw my friends the humming fish swimming through a lane of
water. I knew I was only disconnected to the smog water by a rock. As we came to our new home, I hoped we could one day
return. But I know we can’t.
THANK YOU, YEAR 2 AND 3 TEACHERS!
I would like to acknowledge all of the hard work that the teachers have put into
planning, teaching and assessing the lessons that our Year 2 and 3 students have
been involved in, during Term 3.
Already, our teachers are busy planning the work for Term 4 and, for many of
them, this will continue into the holidays. Thank you for your hard work and
dedication!
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. We look forward to welcoming Mrs
Hayler back for the start of Term 4.

Raceview’s Got Talent
Yesterday we held our annual Talent Quest and, once again, we were amazed at some of the talent that
some of our students have been hiding.
Thank you to those students who were so brave and performed in
front of the whole school. We loved the show!
A huge thank you also to the student leaders who took charge and
ran the show.
Winners will be announced tomorrow at first break.
No Step Raffle
Once again, thanks to the Community Kickbacks Program through Amart Sports
Ipswich, we were able to provide some amazing prizes for our end of term No Step
Raffle.
Congratulations to those students who received a prize!
Toilets
I know that I have mentioned toilets in previous newsletters, but I’m bringing it up again because we are still
having major problems, particularly in the Year 3 and 4 toilets. Students have been warned about the serious
consequences if they are found to be doing the vandalism or flushing objects, lunches or clothing down the toilets. We are currently wasting a significant amount of money on fixing the toilets. This money would be
better spent on the education of our students.
Holidays
Enjoy the upcoming holidays. Stay safe and I look forward to seeing everyone
back on Tuesday 3rd October, ready and refreshed for Term 4.

Last Thursday, our school participated in Outdoor Classroom Day.
As part of the day, many classes spent time
outdoors doing a variety of activities. Our class made a spider web out of sticks and ribbon for art, and practised our mathematical skills of area, perimeter and decimals, whilst
designing a new playground.
Outdoor Classroom Day was great fun and active, and we were surprised
how quickly the time passed! We also enjoyed the opportunity
to work in groups and we were amazed by all the teamwork
and positive behaviour displayed by our class. We hope Outdoor Classroom Day will happen more often and more schools will get involved.
As part of Outdoor Classroom Day, all students in Year 1-6 were given
Nature Play Passports with great outdoor activities for the school holidays.

EVERY THURSDAY
Here are our Future Saver Themed Rewards for 2017 (Cyber
Handball & Colour Change Markers have been released in Term 1)
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young
Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits.
Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through
School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and
redeem for exciting rewards.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school.
Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever
School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the
school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a
Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an
account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
CTRL+ Click on the link above to be directed to the information /
application page. Find “ OPEN NOW” to open a Youthsaver
account, even if you are not a CBA customer ( Takes approx. 5
minutes with online ID available )
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself
and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver
account they can start banking straight away. They just need to
bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their
Dollarmites deposit wallet.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask

as engaging them before school.
The Walking Schools Program provides children with incentives and goals to work towards to keep them
interested and engaged.
A permission form has been given to all students to complete for the program.
If you would like more information about the Walking
Schools Program or would like to be involved, please feel free to contact Kayley from the IHF at
