(Yr Prep—Yr 1)
Dear Parents & Carers Welcome back to students
and parents/carers! I hope
you all had a relaxing break
and have returned feeling
energised ready to tackle
another busy and hopefully
successful Semester Two.
We continue to concentrate
our work in the school
around Reading and
SPORTy behaviour, and I
again urge you to get behind
our drive to improve
student outcomes in these
areas.
If your child leaves Raceview
and moves into Year 7 as a
highly competent reader and
one that displays Self
Control, Persistence,
Organisation, Respect and a
Team Player attitude, they
are well-poised for a
successful secondary
schooling experience.
There are many ways you
can support your child’s
learning at school, in the
home environment – even
for time-poor parents and
carers:

reading to your child,
asking them to tell you

Yr 2 Excursion!
Last term, the Year 2s attended an excursion to the Laidley Historical Village. I had the opportunity to accompany 2G for the day. It was interesting to see the children’s reactions to some of the old-fashioned artefacts that were on display.
Of particular interest to the children, were the old washboard and tub and the schoolroom, complete with old-fashioned
teacher and cane! This venue fitted in very well with the year 2 unit on History and change: ‘They identify how and why the lives of people have changed over time while others have remained the same. They compare objects from the past and present.’
Thank you to the teachers and the parents who assisted on the day. Your help was very much appreciated!!
High Five!
Year 2 and 3 behaviour was fantastic last week. While I know that some of them had a little difficulty
settling back into routine after the holidays, their playground behaviour was very good.
Please take the time to remind your students, as we do here at school, that if others annoy them, they are to do the High Five. The only exception to this, is if they are physically hurt by another child. In this case,
they are to report straight away.
Reading Reminder!
Reading is the corner stone to all learning. It unlocks so many avenues for
expanding knowledge and enjoying stories. This is why reading with and to your child is so important!
Sometimes it’s okay to simply read for pleasure. Books on a topic of
interest, whether fact or fiction, may ignite your child’s interest and encourage him/her to develop a passion for reading. Children like to see a reason for doing things. Comics, magazines, ‘how to’ and factual books,
such as books about machines, sport, cooking etc., are just as important as chapter books. Finding an interest level book for your child may just ignite
that passion for reading that we all love to see!
Remember, books can come from so many places: the local library, school library, fetes, op shops, travel agents, second hand book stores, the
list goes on. Perhaps this weekend would be a good time to visit some of these places to begin the journey to a love of reading!

NEWSFLASH
2017 SENIOR & JUNIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVALS
The Senior Inter-house Athletics
Carnival was held during the last week of Term 2 (after a wash out the week
before), with students taking to the
track to compete in their sprint races
(after field events and 800m finals were
held the week prior).
The Senior Sports Day began with the students marching
proudly in their house colours. This was followed by the houses
singing their war cries with great passion and spirit. The House
Spirit Award for 2017 was judged on the March Past, War Cries
and the level of sportsmanship displayed during the day. This
year the trophy was taken out by Waratah.
After all field and track events were completed, house points
were tallied to find the overall winner of the Jim Marsh Shield
(overall point’s winner) for this year. The winner for 2017 was
Jacaranda (633 points), followed by Wattle (563 points),
Waratah (551 points) and Coolabah (393 points).
I would like to congratulate every student that participated in
the senior athletics carnival this year and commend you all on
your wonderful sportsmanship and effort displayed throughout
the day.
I would also like to thank our wonderful family
members for your support on the day and a
special thanks to those parents that
volunteered their time to work in the BBQ
area and with me around the track.
A special mention must go to the following students who
achieved age champion and runner up awards on the day:

Last week, 56 students from year 3 – 6 represented Raceview State
School at the Ipswich District Track and Field trials at Limestone
Park. It was really pleasing to witness some incredible results by our
students over the two full days (and one afternoon) of competition.
Out of 28 competing schools, Raceview finished 8th overall in the
total point’s trophy. This is an amazing result for our school.
I would like to congratulate all students that competed at the
District Trials. I would also like to commend them on their
outstanding behaviour while representing our school.
A special mention must go to the following students who were
selected in the Ipswich District squad to compete at the Met West
Regional Trials in August. We wish them all the best of luck.
Dane Florager – 11 Years Boys – 800m
Nellie Tapelu – 12 Years Girls – Discus
Kaylee Gorroick – 10 Years Boys – 800m
Lishainah Ulugia – 10 Years Boys – Discus & Shot Put
A very big thank you to our parents and families for your support at
this carnival. It was greatly appreciated by the students. I would also
like to thank Leanne Whyte, Melita Schipplock and Susie Gorroick
for their support in supervising at the carnival and transporting
students to and from the venue.
The Junior Carnival was held last Friday after
the initial carnival was washed out in Term 1.
This time around we were extremely lucky to
have some outstanding conditions throughout
the day. The day started with the March Past
and War Cries and it was obvious from the
student’s enthusiasm and the huge number of
parents and family members supporting them, it was going to be a
great day. The morning activities then got underway with the sprints
and the class tunnel ball challenge. It was pleasing to witness the
great effort and sportsmanship displayed by every student and
everyone that participated received a point for their house.
Following a very closely contested morning and middle session, the
points were tallied and the winner of the 2017 Junior Carnival was
Jacaranda (333 points). Coolabah (314 points) were 2nd, Waratah
(312 points) 3rd and Wattle (300 Points) finished in 4th place.
Students then participated in a number of rotational games and
activities during the middle session and a great time was had by
everybody. The carnival concluded with the class relays which were
a great success.
Before ending this year’s newsflash from the Athletics Carnivals, there are a number of people I need to thank for helping to make
this year’s carnivals such successful events.
I would like to say a very big thank you to the class teachers, teacher
aides, groundsmen, parents, P&C members and administration staff
for their help in the organisation, set up and running of the athletics
carnivals for this year. I would also like to thank our parents/
guardians and families for coming along to cheer on the students as
spectators, participate in the parent, teacher and student relay or
work in the BBQ area with the sausage sizzle. It was fantastic to see
so many people supporting our school at these events.
The sausage sizzle was again a huge success at both the Junior and
the Senior Carnivals. I would like to thank the students, parents and
staff that took time out during the two days to help with cooking
and serving.
Once again, congratulations to all students on their
effort, behaviour and sportsmanship during the
carnivals. You should be very proud of yourselves.
SUMMER INTERSCHOOL SPORT
The summer interschool sporting season begins on Friday 11 August
2017 with students participating in sports including Softball, AFL,
Touch, Basketball and Cricket. Please note that all sports will travel
to games by bus and students will need to pay $7 per week for this.
Teams will hold their trials in the coming weeks and permission
notes will be sent home soon.
We had an amazing Winter Season this year, with our school taking
out premierships in Netball and Rugby League. Congratulations to
all students that participated in interschool sport during Semester 1
and well done to the teams and coaches that won premierships.
DISTRICT AND REGIONAL TRIAL SUCCESS
Congratulations to Mark Woodward and Liam
Richards on their selection in the Ipswich District
Boys Softball squad for 2017. Both boys competed
really well at the Regional trials last Friday and their
coach was pleased with their effort and
sportsmanship throughout the day. A special
mention and congratulations must go to Mark Woodward who was
selected in the Metropolitan West Boys Softball team to compete at
the State Championships in the coming months. Well done.

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY 2017
Dear Parents/Carers,
Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of
students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability.
All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability and
all Australian schools participate in this annual data collection.
The data provided to the Australian Government is aggregated data only. Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school
level to be reported nationally is the:
number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;
level of adjustments we provide for those students; and
broad category of disability.
Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being
provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you.
The data does not identify individual students and will be submitted outside of the Department.
Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the:
Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html
Australian Government Department of Education website: http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability
Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact me directly.

The P&C is a parent
representative body, which
stands for Parents & Citizens
Association. The P&C is the
voice of the parents. It is at
P&C meetings that decisions
affecting your child at school
are made.
Being a part of the P&C is a great way for parents to be
informed of what is happening at the school, influence school
policy, have a say in the development of school activities,
contribute to the school’s resources through various
fundraising projects and a chance to meet other parents.
The Raceview State School P&C meets on the 3rd
Monday of every month at 6.30pm unless advised
otherwise. The next meeting will be held on Monday 21st of
August at 6.30pm in the Staff Room. We would love to see

SCHOOL BANKING
NEWS
School Banking at Raceview State School is on
EVERY THURSDAY
Here are our Future Saver Themed Rewards for 2017 (Cyber
Handball & Colour Change Markers have been released in Term 1)
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young
Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits.
Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through
School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and
redeem for exciting rewards.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school.
Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever
School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the
school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a
Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an
account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
CTRL+ Click on the link above to be directed to the information /
application page. Find “ OPEN NOW” to open a Youthsaver
account, even if you are not a CBA customer ( Takes approx. 5
minutes with online ID available )
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself
and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver
account they can start banking straight away. They just need to
bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their
Dollarmites deposit wallet.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask
for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM 2018 - ATTENTION ALL YEAR 2 & 3 STUDENTS!
IPSWICH BANDTASTIC MUSIC WORKSHOP: Last term in Week 9 we had a large number of our Beginner & Senior Band students representing our school at the Bandtastic Workshop. Well done to the parents for giving their child the opportunity to participate. There were about 180 students attending the workshop over 2 days.
The students were separated into 2 bands of around 90 students - a much larger sized band than what most of
these students would have ever experienced. Students practised their sight-reading skills as they were presented
with several unfamiliar pieces of music of varying styles. Two pieces were chosen which the students rehearsed as a band and then worked with specialised tutors in tutorials. All the students did an amazing job to prepare and perform these pieces of music for their parents at the concert in really what was less than a day and a half! I was very proud of how our students represented our school both musically and with their behaviour. Well done everyone!
Sharon McInnes Instrumental Music Teacher – Band Mt Crosby SS Tuesday & Wednesday
Raceview SS Thursdays
The selection process for Year 2 students for the 2018 Strings Program and Year 3 students for the 2018 Band Program will begin this term. Due to the number of spaces available in the Strings Program, only Year 2 students are able to apply for Strings. Please note that owning your instrument does not guarantee a place in the program on that particular instrument as all students need to go through the selection process. Instruments available for Year 2 to try out for: violin, cello. Instruments available for Year 3 to try out for: trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor
saxophone and percussion (glockenspiel and drums).
HOW DO YEAR 2 & YEAR 3 STUDENTS APPLY FOR THE 2018 INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM? For students to be considered for the Instrumental Music Program, parents must first complete an EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM in order for their child to go through the selection process. EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORMS for the 2018 Instrumental Music Program will be given to Year 2 & Year
3 class teachers at the end of the Instrumental Music Demonstration concert on Thursday, 27 July for distribution to the children in their class.
DO YOU HAVE AN INSTRUMENT TO SELL?
If you have one of the instruments listed above and are considering selling it, please contact either Mr Chan
regarding string instruments and Mrs McInnes for Band instruments for consideration to advertise it at the
Instrumental Music Parent Information Evening. Please be aware that quality and brands will be taken into
consideration.
