Dear Parents & Carers
Student Pick Up Zone Car Park near Prep
What a fantastic response to our new student
pick up zone in the afternoon.
A huge thank you to our parents and carers for
your patience as we implement our new system.
Thanks also to our Teacher Aides who are
running the area in the afternoon.
The President of our P&C, Mr Price also
supported several afternoons which helped us
enormously. The information about the new
student pick up zone can be found further in the
newsletter.
Facilities
Block A and B are both now sporting a new
roof.
The P&C suggested we share some before and
after photographs with you.
The workmen were very helpful in taking the
photos for us.
P&C Day
We had a great
morning tea with
our hard working
P&C on 25th May.
Thank you to the
members who
were able to come
along and share in
celebrating P&C
Day.
We’ve included
some photos for
you that capture
the moments.
Cybersafety
Talks
On 12th June we
will have a small
team of people
from the
Department of
Education visiting
our school to talk with students in years 4,5 and 6 on ways to be cyber safe. Parents are invited to
come along and listen to the messages. If your
child is not in year 4,5 or 6 please still feel free to
come along and hear the messages. We all need
to be highly aware and vigilant. Our Dean, Mrs
Young, has included the times for these talks
further in the newsletter. Looking forward to
seeing many of you on the 12th.
Weekly Assembly
Thank you! Thank you! to the many parents,
carers and grandparents who have been attending
our weekly assemblies. It is wonderful to see you
there. Please come along when you can and
share in the weekly celebration of students’
successes at our school.
Have a great fortnight everyone,

Great progress in Prep and Year 1
Yet again, I have the great pleasure of reporting that students in Prep and Year 1 have been showing tremendous
SPORTy behaviour at school. Students displaying self-control, persistence, organisation, respect and team player
attitudes are setting themselves up to get the most learning out of their school day. Socially and emotionally,
many of our students have shown great improvement. Of course, these skills are developed over a lifetime, but in
the early years, we have the privilege of witnessing dramatic rates of improvement!
As we power towards the end of the term, our Prep students continue to
investigate, imagine, create and problem-solve (to name but a few skills), during
Walker Learning investigations. Teachers then springboard into explicit
teaching throughout the rest of the day. Just over a week ago, Prep students
and staff attended the wedding of ‘Q’ and ‘U’, a culminating celebration of
students learning the ‘qu’ digraph. All involved had a great time and I’m sure
that ‘qu’ is one digraph that won’t be forgotten! Thank you to the staff that
made it all possible and so enjoyable!
In Year 1, students have started to engage in poetry by listening to, viewing and
reading a range of poetry as well as exploring sound patterns and the features of
plot, character and setting. During a quick pop in to 1A, I was met with students
using grand gestures to describe some of the actions in the poem, I Blew a Bubble.
They sure had me engaged!
Pick-up Zone
We are just over a week into rolling out the student pick-up zone in the Bottlebrush Crt carpark.
The goal of this change is to improve the safety and also the speed at which children can be
collected from school. From the feedback we have received from parents/carers and staff, this has
been a big success. We have also received some great suggestions to make improvements to the
process and management of the pick-up zone and waiting areas. A big thank you to parents/carers
and staff for your ongoing patience. Your support has greatly helped make this transition, a smooth process!
Reminder: Under 8s Day is coming soon!
This year’s Under 8s Day will be on Tuesday 26th June from 9am. Parents are invited to
join in the celebration so please come along and share in the fun with your child/ren! If
your child is in one of the year levels participating in Under 8s Day celebrations, they will be
coming home with a letter with more information soon.

New Roof
The re-roofing project is now completed and all classes are back in their
rooms. Thank you to the students, teachers and parents for your patience
during this unsettled time. The students coped remarkably well and certainly
displayed their SPORTy behaviour.
Year 3 Railway Museum
Year 3 students who attended the excursion to the
Ipswich Railway Museum had a very enjoyable and
informative experience. Teachers have reported that
students represented our school admirably, using
their SPORTy behaviours. Thank you to the
teachers, teacher aides & parents who accompanied
the students to ensure that they gained the most out
of their day.
Attendance
I am very pleased to inform you that the Year 3s have reached 93.0% attendance. Well done to year 3 students, families and
teachers. We have exceeded the State target of 92.8%! Well done Year 3, keep up the good work!
Below are some examples of how teachers and students from years 2 and 3 track their attendance.
Assembly Items
3E and 2A have presented their items on Assembly over the last two weeks. It is great to see the children actively engaged in
showing the rest of us what they have been learning. Great work 3E and 2A!

Disco
Don’t forget our Term 2 school disco is next Thursday night 14 June. We are going to trial some new times for this disco as being
a Thursday night, we don’t want the students out late on a school night.
The new times are as follows - Prep to Year 3 can attend between 4:30pm and 5:45pm. Years 4 to 6 can attend between
6:00pm and 7:30pm. The cost of entry to the disco is now $4.
Parents are asked to drop their children at the door and pick them up from inside the hall. Students will not be permitted to leave
the hall unless collected by a parent or family member. Students are fully supervised inside the hall by Raceview State School staff.
Food and drink will be on sale. Sausage in bread - $2 Cup of cheerios - $2 Soft drink can - $2 Poppers - $1 Bottled water small – 50c Bottled water large - $1 Small chocolates – 50c Various lollies ranging from 10c to 50c
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school. Looking forward to another great night!
Brainstorm Productions
Brainstorm Productions will be visiting on Tuesday 26 June to present a new anti-bullying show called ‘Buddies.’ It is a paid
show so students who are not part of the Student Resource Scheme need to pay $5 to attend. Everyone who is going also needs
to return the permission slip.
Armbands
It’s great to see so many students wearing their armbands with pride. Make sure you take good care of those bands
and keep them in a safe place because we can’t replace lost or broken bands.
Life Education
The Life Education van will be leaving next Tuesday. The teacher who came with the van to do the lessons has been very
impressed with our students. She told me that she travels to different schools all the time and she particularly likes the Raceview
kids because of their great behaviour and manners.
Year 6 Camp
During week 10 of this term, our Yr 6 students are heading to camp. Look out for
Facebook updates while the kids are away. Camp Currimundi is so much fun and the
activities are awesome! Last year parents were keen to see camp photos on our Facebook
page while students were away. Please be aware that Year 6 students will only be in the
photos if they have Facebook permission. If you are wanting your child to be in the photos
but you are unsure about whether or not they have permission already, please call the
office to check and update if necessary. Here are some of our students enjoying camp in
previous years.

FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS
FULL HOUSE
You may have heard your child speaking about the class having a Full
House at school that day, and that the class were able to hang out
their Full House poster, (see image).
This occurs when all (100%) the students in the class are attending
school that day.
You may have also heard this mentioned on parade when the leaders
do a ‘shout out’ for those classes who had a Full House the previous
week.
The students are excited to be able to say they have a Full House,
and it is great to walk around the school and see the signs.
We are aware that, especially at this time of year, we can all get sick.
When that happens, the best place to be is home in bed. If this is the case,
please call the Student Absentee line on 3294 4166. This is a 24 hr service.
CYBERSAFETY
A reminder that we are fortunate to have the Education Department’s
Cybersafety Team visiting Raceview State School to speak with our students in
years 4 – 6, on Tuesday June 12. The sessions for the students are as below:
11:15am - 12:15pm: Year 4
12:15pm - 1:15pm: Year 5
2:00pm - 3:00pm: Year 6
All parents are welcome to attend any session, even if they do not have a student in those year
levels. Questions from parents are welcome after sessions 2 and 3, however there will not be time
after session 1 as the next session will start straight away.

HOW TO USE THE LOADING ZONE
Your passenger pickup zone / 2 minute zone allows for the quick pick up of
children during congested peak school "let out" times.
THE CONCEPT Vehicles move slowly along the loading
zone towards the front of the queue Children see the vehicle and are ready to
get in The vehicle can be stationary for a
maximum of two minutes only Motorists "give each other a fair go" RESPECT THE TIMING Do not stop for more than two (2) minutes Do not park in the zone and walk away
from the car PICKING UP AND LOADING BAGS Plan your arrival time - Does it have to be
before students are released from class? Do you have older children? Could you
ask them to be ready and waiting 15 minutes after school gets out?
You can get out of the vehicle only to
assist the children to load bags If your child is not waiting please drive
away and return to the queue or park legally and walk to collect them
Never double park to pick up children –
it is illegal and dangerous
The ‘Look Out’ Steps:
Queue and display your family name tag on the passenger side sun-
visor. These will be distributed to parents/carers in the pick-up zone.
Wait while your children are called
Stay in your car until your children arrive
Load your children & their bags without delay
Ensure seat belts are secure then leave safely
If your children are not ready, leave the zone and rejoin the queue
Things to remember:
It is a 2 minute loading zone
If your children are not able to be loaded within two minutes, drive
out of the zone
Find a parking space elsewhere, or drive off and rejoin the back of
the queue
Be considerate and do not overstay your time in the loading
zone

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
LOOK OUT PROGRAM
As you are aware, Raceview State School has implemented the ‘Look Out’ program from the 2 minute
loading zone in the car park off Bottlebrush Court (near the Prep buildings). This is to further enhance the
safety of our students at pick up time in the afternoon, by providing parents and carers with the option of a
quick and safe way of collecting their children.
To support parents and carers using this program, Prep students are no longer required to be signed in and
out in the morning and afternoon. New arrangements to ensure a smooth and, most importantly, safe drop-
off and pick-up are listed below.
In the morning at 8:45am, Prep students enter the Prep area and report to class.
In the afternoon at 2:55pm:
Parents / carers can still collect children from the classroom;
All other students will be walked to the Pick-up waiting area where they will be supervised:
Students being collected by car will wait until a parent / carer arrives;
Students catching buses wait until their after school care bus arrives;
Students walking home with siblings or parents / carers leave the waiting area and meet in a
pre-arranged place in the school.
Please note – parents / carers of students in any year level are welcome to use the pick-up zone in
the afternoon if this is more convenient. Students will need to wait in the designated waiting area until their
parent / carer collects them.
‘Look Out’ can only work with the co-operation of everyone who uses the zone and a commitment to the
program by your school and individuals alike. Please follow these steps:
Queue and display your family name tag on the passenger side sun-visor (these will be distributed to
parents / carers in the pick-up zone)
Wait while your children are called
Stay in your car until your children arrive
Ensure seat belts are secure then leave safely
Things to remember:
It is a 2 minute loading zone
If your children are not able to be loaded within two minutes, drive out of the zone
Find a parking space elsewhere, drive off and rejoin the back of the queue
Be considerate and do not overstay your time in the loading zone

Calling all readers!!
Students of Raceview State School have the opportunity to be part of this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. Those students interested in meeting the challenge will be given recording sheets this week. The challenge runs from now until the 24th of August.
As well as being fun, the Premier’s Reading challenge aims to boost children’s literacy skills by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure and learning, to develop their imagination, and to cultivate a passion for literature. To successfully complete the challenge, students must read or experience the number of books shown in the table below. The requirement for Year 5 and Year 6 students to read 15 books acknowledges that older students are likely to select longer, more complex books that may take them longer to read.
The following activities can be counted towards the challenge:
reading independently shared reading being read to (Prep – Year 2 only).
The following literature forms can be counted towards the challenge:
printed books e-books, virtual books and digital publications graphic novels and comic books audio and braille books newspapers, magazines and recipe books.
Year level Number of books
Prep – Year 2 Read or experience 20 books
Years 3 – 4 20 books
Years 5 – 9 15 books

Wrapper Free Wednesday Lunch Challenge Years 4-6
Dear Parents and Carers,
Starting this week Raceview State School is holding a weekly
Wrapper Free Wednesday Lunch Challenge.
Each Wednesday, we ask that your child’s lunch contain as few
items as possible that must be thrown away. Reusable containers
are a handy way to pack a waste-free lunch. They also make it
easy to buy food and drink in bulk (instead of in single-servings)
which can save money over time.
The Wrapper Free Wednesday Lunch Challenge is an initiative by
the students in the Tangalooma EcoMarine Club. By participating,
students will have a better understanding of how they can take
action to reduce our waste. Waste-free lunches also save money
and promote healthy eating.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the
Wrapper Free Wednesday Lunch Challenge, please do not
hesitate to contact Mr Winwood.
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in the
Raceview State School’s Wrapper Free Wednesday Lunch
Challenge.
Regards,
Nick Winwood

in either of the car parks near
the Admin Block or the Hall.

To address the difficulties with parking,
we have implemented the Lookout Program.

P & C NEWS
The P&C is a parent representative
body, which stands for Parents &
Citizens Association. The P&C is
the voice of the parents. It is at
P&C meetings that decisions
affecting your child at school are
made.
Being a part of the P&C is a great way for parents to be
informed of what is happening at the school, influence school
policy, have a say in the development of school activities,
contribute to the school’s resources through various
fundraising projects and a chance to meet other parents.
The Raceview State School P&C meets on the 3rd
Monday of every month at 6.30pm unless advised
otherwise. As the 16th April is a pupil free day, the next
meeting will be held on Monday, 18th of June 2018 in the
staffroom. We would love to see you there!

Please don’t overstay the 2 minute time limit
for dropping off or picking up passengers in the loading zones.
Overstaying can cause traffic congestion and can
frustrate other motorists which can create a dangerous environment for our school children.
