Dear Friends,
Summer is here! Let’s hope we can all enjoy the sunshine, the fresh air, and the release from the pressures of “the school year”! This has been quite a year…What are your plans for this summer? Whatever they may be, I hope they include some well-deserved rest and relaxation.
Our sacred texts include some references to summer (Kayitz, in Hebrew). In Genesis Chapter 8, verse 20- 21, we learn what happened to Noah when the flood waters subsided, and he came out of the ark. Noah built an altar to God for the sacrifices he dedicated to God. God smelled the pleasing odor and vowed
Rabbi’s Message - Rabbi Gilah Drornever again to doom the world because of human beings. And, in verse 22, God promised: “So long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease.”
Interestingly, our awareness of the unique nature of summertime dates back through ancient texts to ancient times, and by examining some of those texts, we can learn how our ancestors related to the hot days of summer.
As opposed to the reference in Genesis to summer as a season that will always be a part of our yearly cycle, reminding us of God’s promise not to destroy the world, in the Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim 112a, we read:
“Rabbi Akiva commanded Rabbi Yehoshua, his son, about seven matters:” And, among those seven matters, we have again a reference to summer. But, this time, it's in a completely different context than the context of the Genesis reference.
Here are the seven matters that Rabbi Akiva brought to the attention of his son:
1. "My son, do not sit at the high point of a city and study.”
This first piece of advice assumes that lots of people pass by the high point of a city, and this would distract his son from what he was trying to study.
2. “And do not live in a city whose leaders are Torah scholars.”
Wow! Why not? Apparently, Rabbi Akiva thought that the Torah scholars would be too busy studying to govern properly….
3. “And do not enter your house suddenly. Even more so, the house of another.”
From these two admonishments we learn of Rabbi Akiva’s concern about ensuring everyone’s privacy.
4. "And do not withhold shoes from your feet.” Walking barefoot was, it seems, a sign of disrespect.
5. “Wake up and eat, in the summer due to the heat, and in the winter due to the cold.”
Breakfast, according to Rabbi Akiva, gives one the energy to withstand both the heat of summer and the cold of winter!
6. “And make your Shabbat as a weekday so that you are not beholden to others.”
In other words, don’t go into debt to make a special Shabbat meal!
7. “And look for the company of a person upon whom fortune smiles.”
This sounds to me like good practical advice!

In this Talmudic passage, summer is not seen as a reminder of God’s promise, but rather it is seen as a season that poses physical challenges for human beings – challenges that, in Rabbi Akiva’s mind, could be met by getting up early and eating breakfast every day!
I am not suggesting that we all must adopt all of Rabbi Akiva’s pieces of advice to his son, but we can learn from this Talmudic teaching that Jewish education encompasses a wide range of topics both spiritual and practical and that Jewish
wisdom includes a focus on how the mitzvoth of Torah might play out in our everyday lives.
For me, summer is a time for relaxation as well as a time to prepare for the High Holy Days that come on the heels of the summer….And, while we are taking time to refresh ourselves during the summer, we might take the time to consider what advice, both spiritual and practical, we would give to ourselves, and to our children, if we decided to incorporate the wisdom and the experience we have gained
during the past year…
Let’s take Rabbi Akiva’s seven matters as a prompt for us to formulate our own seven matters. So, here’s a spiritual summer challenge: What would your top seven pieces of advice look like this year?
Wishing you all a Kayitz Na’im, a very pleasant and refreshing summer!

Sisterhood would like to share a few things as we gradually ease back to life as we knew it.
The colorful flower arrangements outside the sanctuary are back, now that we are meeting in person. The arrangements are funded by individual member contributions as a wonderful way to remember loved ones. Please continue your support of the Flower Fund by responding to Sisterhood's recent mailing and sending your check to Shelly Portnoy.
In addition to that, look for the information for the Directory which we publish annually.
We are discussing plans for an end of the summer get-together to welcome 5782: it should be a "cool" time.
Finally; Congratulations to Martha Katz-Hyman on her new position as First Vice President on the Rodef Sholom Temple Board. Much success, Martha!

Please join us for our in-person services. It is a joy to see you again as we gather in our sanctuary for services. By the time you read this there will likely have been more announcements of additional in-person services and adjustments to some of our protocols. Things are starting to get back to normal.
High Holiday planning is underway, and Cantor Ross is looking forward to being with us in-person this year. Our goal is to include in the services as much of what we normally do as possible, yet we may have some protocols to follow in doing so. Nevertheless, the new year is coming, and with it, the opportunity to experience together these meaningful sacred days. Read more in this Messenger and watch for communications from the office detailing specifics as we get closer.
Our fiscal year has just ended and as we reflect on the past year, perhaps a valid sentiment is, “it was a year to forget”. It has been a difficult year that has challenged many individuals physically and emotionally. No one imagined the world would experience what came to be, and the affect it would have on society. Governments, schools, places of worship, commerce, employment, and individual households all had to adjust and figure out when and how to integrate normal routine during such a chaotic time. From the standpoint of RST, everyone involved on our Task Force, Executive, and Board acted responsibly and considered the input from all who shared. All those were more than 30 individuals all with input along with others in our community who cast their thoughts and ideas into the mix to help us make decisions.
Among us were doctors and nurses in our congregation who saw first-hand the gravity of the situation, and understood the toll being exacted on our society. Many of these professionals spoke up and helped provide us a “real perspective” of what was going on. And to those who did so, we are grateful. And to all those serving as volunteers in our community, giving of their time & energy serving the RST community, we are grateful for the many hours you have spent working to keep our community connected, as much as “reasonably possible”, and at the same time…Safe.
To everyone in our congregation, we thank you for your understanding and support of the efforts of all those working for the benefit of our community. Your encouragement and participation have exemplified the value of community.
I encourage everyone to come and be with us as we now work on healing together.
Allen Fraley

Happy summer, Rodef Sholom Temple family,As the summer begins, we enjoy reflecting upon our unique Religious School school year. Although unconventional, we have enjoyed learning and making the most of our connections. The pandemic certainly showed us all how resilient and adaptable that we can be.
I would like to take this opportunity to echo, once again, what was expressed during our Teacher Appreciation tribute. Thank you to our amazing Religious School staff: Lisa Green, Christina Anthony, Tamara Passut, Bianca Kauffman, Rabbi Dror, and Sarah Barnett for your positivity, flexibility, and sheer love and care of Jewish education and our students. Also, thank you to Roy Lasris, Danile Spokony, Mike Stupar, Bonnie Brooks, Disraeli Brooks, Sydney Frank, and all of our substitutes and volunteers for everything that you have done for us, as well. Your efforts were so meaningful to us. I would like to also mention a big thank you to all of our supportive families, students and our congregation.
We are looking forward to being in-person (tentatively) for our next Religious School year!
Please enjoy a safe and relaxing summer! See you in the fall!
B'Shalom,
Gavrielle

The annual Rodef Sholom Golf Tournament is back on as we head (thankfully) out of COVID. This is the largest event fund raiser for RST so support and participation is very important.
We are pleased to announce that the tradition of honoring the memory of Marty Damsky will continue, but we are also honored to add Adam Deyong’s name to this important event. Marty and Adam loved RST and golf, so it is a great combination to remember two very special people.
The event will be held in Williamsburg on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at the Woods Golf Course in Kingsmill. The entry form for participating and sponsoring is on the opposite page. This event is enjoyable for several reasons: the golf on a great course is fun AND the lunch that we will now be able to have at the Mounts Bay Rec Center in Kingsmill is spectacular. The lunch will be dairy and will respect Covid guidelines.
On behalf of the Rodef Sholom Golf Committee we look forward to and need your participation and support.
