LANDSCAPE TO SCULPTURE: JOHN BRiDGEmAN (1916 – 2004)25 January – 21 April 2013John Bridgeman ArCA, FrBs, FrBsA, who lived in and near leamington spa for over 40 years, was Head of sculpture at Birmingham school of Art from 1955 to 1981. this exhibition is the first retrospective of his diverse practice and includes sculptures, drawings, maquettes and paintings.

Although he trained as a landscape painter, Bridgeman became fascinated by sculpture. In the 1940s Henry Moore invited Bridgeman to become his studio assistant, but this offer was rejected as Bridgeman was determined to pursue an independent career. During World War II he started work on an installation titled Torture Wall, which he continued to develop throughout his career. the exhibition will include a construction of this work, which has never before been publicly displayed.

the exhibition will be complemented by a new public artwork by Birmingham-based artists simon & tom Bloor. Design for Pleasure was inspired by John Bridgeman’s large scale ‘play sculptures’ which were installed in a number of playgrounds in the West Midlands in the 1960s. the work, which will be sited in the Pump room Gardens, is a functional sculpture that offers the generation who first enjoyed Bridgeman’s play sculptures a place to stop, sit and talk.

ADDItIONAl INFOrMAtIONArt GAllEry & MusEuMnew acquisitions

Jacqueline Donachieleamington spa Art Gallery & Museum has a permanent collection consisting of fine art, craft, sculpture, local and social history, archaeology and ethnography. the Art Gallery & Museum has added Medical History as a collecting area since the move to the royal Pump rooms in 1999. this reflects the history of the building as a centre for medical treatments for nearly two centuries, especially hydrotherapy and physiotherapy. A major step forward in this area has been the acquisition of work by established contemporary artists as a part of the Medicate project carried out with the support of the Wellcome trust between 1999 and 2005. leamington spa Art Gallery & Museum has continued to build on this legacy by acquiring contemporary artworks that in some way reference the medical.

Glasgow-based artist Jacqueline Donachie (b.1969) has a special interest in healthcare and bio-medical research. she graduated from the Glasgow school of Art’s influential Environmental Art department, which encouraged artists to place their work in a variety of public contexts outside the gallery space. leamington spa Art Gallery & Museum chose to acquire Donachie’s Weight because this installation – which crosses sculpture, drawings and photographs – resonates visually with some of the medical treatments that previously took place in the building. the original concept of the work was to respond to muscular dystrophy.

Weight, Susan’s Eyes and Winter Trees (2008) are currently on display at leamington spa Art Gallery & Museum.they were purchased through the Contemporary Art society’s Acquisitions scheme.
