ART GALLeRY & MuSeuMeXHIBITIONS

GrOund LeveL17 February – 10 April

Ground Level explores how contemporary art, mapping and cartography collide.

Traditionally the role of the cartographer has been to produce a geographically precise and impersonal description of the landscape. However, cartography has rarely been a wholly objective enterprise. As technology grants access to satellite imagery the cartographer’s work has moved further into contested areas, such as ownership, rights to land, and the flows of people.

The exhibition brings together the work of international contemporary artists who have explored this subject. By creating their own maps and surveys their work puts forward idiosyncratic readings of language, peoples, signs and geography.

Ground Level, Curatorial Open II is curated by Kit Hammonds, winner of the 2010 Hayward CuratorialOpen, a platform for innovative curatorship in the uK. Ground Level is the second in a series of Hayward Touring Curatorial Open exhibitions. This Hayward Touring exhibition has been selected anddeveloped in partnership with John Hansard Gallery;

QuAd, derby; Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno andLeamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum.
