What is Eyeless Sight? (Who Can Do I t? Does i t Work?)by Edwin L. Motter

B orn during a blizzard, on a sand farm in northern Oklahoma in D ecember, 1918, I was delivered by my dad. I wasa kindergartener when my righ t eye was damaged by a stickand three years la te r I los t the use of my remaining goodeye. I was stripping the hardened sap from the trunk ofa cherry t ree , my knife slipped and cut my le f t eye wide open. Specialis ts said the optic nerves w ere destroyed, and restoration of sight would be impossible.Vhen my dad was eighty, in 1961, he read an art icle to mewritten by a well-known columnist w hich told about a manWilliam A. Foos of Virginia, who h ad taught his sixteenyear-old daughter, Margaret, to "see" while completelyblindfolded. Intrigued, though skeptical, we were determined to verify the story. H aving a couple of weeks before my schoolwork started in September, we decided tov is i t Ray Sewell, a blind young man with whom B ill Fooshad spent some time teaching his m ethod for learning eyeless sight. Ray and his parents welcomed us into the irW est Virginia home w here he, his wife and l i t t l e g ir lwe re l iv ing. During the few days spent with him, Raytaught me the tra ining m ethod developed by Bil l . I t cons is ts of s i t t ing at a small table completely blindfoldedopposite the instructor. The teacher f i r s t graspsthepupi l's wrist and slowly moves his own hand back and forthacross in front of his blindfold, a l l the while te l l ing him to watch the hand as i t m oves. Most people get aneerie feel ing upon realizing they can actually detect ashadow or in some instances a bright spot moving beforetheir eyes. Following the in i t ia l shock, they almost invariably begin to rationalize with such expressions as - "Of course, I know w here i t is ; i t ' s my own hand." Butf inally they admit i t was more than merely a know ing ; i twas actually seeing a vague image. I t is essential thatthis f i r s t be firmly established before further progresscan be accomplished.A positive att i tude is maintained at a l l times. Negativism will s t i f le progress. Observing one's own h an d infront of his face is necessary as a foundation upon w h ichto build the more diff icu lt steps.Next, the instructor holds his own hand in front of thesubject 's face, always describing every move he makes

while constantly assuring the person that he can see thehand and knows where i t is . He then moves his hand slowly and rhythmically to the subject 's right and then l e f t ,while keeping up a running commentary as follows: "Myhand is directly in front of your face and you can see i t .Now I'm moving my hand to your r ight 1 now in front of yourface to the l e f t , back to your right , back and forth, back and forth. Now I have stopped i t . Reach up and slapmy hand.N In the early stages i t is essential that thesubject act on impulse. Firs t impressions are usuallyright . With each success, the pupil gains more confidenceand accuracy. Later, the operator stops his hand in frontof the subject 's face, brings i t down in a straight l ineto one of three positions directly in front of thepersonas belt buckle, to his l e f t or to his right . Theinstructor says: "I have stopped my hand in front of yourface: now I am bringing i t down in a straight l ine. Nowi t is stopped, reach out and hit i t : " Correct scores arefar higher than chance.Next, pupil and teacher move to the small table mentionedearl ier . Until now they have been standing. They s i tfacing each other across the card table. This time theoperator holdsan object (often a cotton ball) in his handwhile passing i t back and forth in front of the subject 0 sface. He then stops i t directly in front of the personseyes, brings i t slowly down to the table in a straightl ine and places i t on the table in one of three positions--middle, l e f t or r ight . Upon command without hesitation, the subject reaches out and picks up the cotton balLThis procedure is repeated many, many times. Later, twomore objects are introduces, such as a comb and wallet oranything handy a t the moment. Each object is put throughthe same routine and eventually placed on the table. Theinstructor t e l l s what the object i s , but does not t e l lat which of the three positions he is placing i t . Aftera l l have been placed on the table; he will say, "Now handme the wallet , now the cotton bal l , and now the comb:'Successes are lavi$hly praised while seeming failures areplayed down. Later, le t ters on blocks are used, such asare found in the game of Scrabble. The subject actuallylearns to "see" the le t te rs and pick them out. With theencouragement of the Foos Family, I deigned to t ry . Afterconsiderable practice, the le t ter called for would standout l ike a small l ight from a l l the others. "Seeing"forthe f i r s t time in forty-three years was extremely exciting to me. I just sat and drank i t in for awhile

Dr. Paul Richard (pronounced Ri-shard), a French philosopher came to the u. s. to observe Margaret firs thand, andto formulate his theory:"The sense organs of the body are l im iting factors . Theear permits only an extremely short range of the to ta lrange of vibrat ions to be received, thus permitting thel is tener to hear various pitches within the audio portionof the spectrum.Likewise, the eye lim its one's vision to certain vibrationson the to ta l spectrum. I f the eye were fixed in the headand the head not allowedto turn , the la te ra l vision w o uldbe l imited to th ir ty degrees more or le ss . Thus, a l imiting organ, the eye, enables the individuaJ ~ o see color, shapes and sizes of objects. I f this l im itation should b er e mo ved through disease, accident, or a r t i f i c ia l ly b useof a blindfold, the individual is said to be blind. Actual ly, the contrary is true . Rather than being cast into darkness, the person i s plunged into to ta l vision and because he sees everything, he sees nothing. Until thesculptor puts his chisel to the stone or wood, the objectis without definit ion. Inadvertently, Bil l Foos was subs t i tu t ing a psychical immitation for the physical l im itat ion-- in this instance the eye--which h:ad been either p e ~ manently or temporarily removed. I t should be understoodtha t the preceding i s only a theory and not necessarilythe true explanation. But i t i s . food for thought.

    DEATH IS A TEACHINGiYLUU.am l3a1i.aAd

There are many questions to ask ourselves when we are onthe Spiri tual Path. Do we grieve for ourselves, or for our loved ones? T hey certainly do not need our grieffor they have been released or "recalled" from th is heavydense, material plane. They are now in t ransi t ion, free and able to function unfettered.T hey are vibrating a t a much higher rate of speed than onthe mortal plane. Though you cannot see them perhaps, they can see you.Just as we do not see the blades of an elec tr ic fan wheni t i s running, so we also oo not see our loved ones out ofaccustomed ra te . T hey are no longer slowed down by theweight of a dense and material body. The mortal form hasa slower vibration and is in the range of our mortal vis-ion w here we see with mortal eyes. "There is no death."Remember this ani firmly fix i t in your s ta te of conscious-ness. The f inal i ty of death is just not f ina l.Centuries of teachings deliberately programm ed tha;t we areto accept and fear death. We were not to question or tow onder about the happenings. Do you think, do you fear achanging rate of vibration or the pattern we often thinkof in our times as a "RECALL."Sometimes such a change of vibrat ion permits one to be ofgreater usefulness. Restrictions of the body are gone andthe sh ift ing from one phase to another is s implified. Many thus have the joy of helping to complete a Spiri tualProg ram tha t was s tarted by another when th is t rans i t iontakes place and the baton is transferred .That which was not completed yesterday may be finishedtomorrow, by another. "We a l l stand on the shoulders ofpast generations." Always there is a r igh t moment forevery plan. Tomorrow f its well into eterni ty which is notfixed, is not far off . Every minute, every hour of everyday becomes a part of the great Eternal NOW.

I t ~ an Eternal Now that is helping to continue an activ-i ty or a project s tar ted by one "recalled'' into anothervibrat ion. Pioneers are mighty souls who demonstrate avery "Special Mission." Others have the simpler task ofstart ing a ball to ro l l or keeping i t rol l ing , as I 'dl ike to do with this idea.

Our world especially needs pioneers - - the bright ones - the shining ones with dedication and desire to help humani ty . They are strong leaders who have special foresightand ini t iat ive to give us a glimpse of the future, whichseems always over the hi l l and beyond our understandings.I t is good to know that a l l is re lat ive, that a future isnow start ing to happen today. Soon i t will be thebeginning of that past we cal l tomorrow. The t ides of l i fe come in , and the t ides of l i fe go out.The waves reach for the shore and the strong ones touchthe highest cl i f f . The pattern is repeated - incarnationto incarnation and on again. We must reach for a state of perfection in any endeavor -no matter how t r iv ia l i t seems for i t is in this way thatwe perfect ourselves through mastery of primary grades. We climb the spiral staircase and learn that the magic isa simple rule of climb. Part of the mastery is fulf i l l ingobligations. An obligation is really an unpaid debt.which, unti l i t isbrought into balance with this l i fe , has to be recognizedas an unpaid responsibil i ty, and thus an imperfect aspectof l iving, Now. I see that debts no matter how incurredmust be dissolved or brought into balance by word, deedor monetary stipend. I t matters l i t t l e the r e c i p r o c a t i o ~An obligation returns for payment in various and sundryways unti l dissolvement of the debt.I feel we owe a debt of gratitude to The Integratron, thewonderful project pioneered by George w. Van Tassel whohad the foresight and vision to begin what others may nowcomplete--and which must not go uncompleted-- an electros tat ic magnetic generator which will benefit mankind. He selected competent people to pass the baton to , butthey require our wholehearted assistance, commitment andsupport to carry th is project forward. How can you helpwith this? Write, please write today and le t us know.
