Principal’s Message Dear Parents/ Guardians:

The last two months have been very busy ones here at FE Osborne School. In that time, the

school has had many special events including: Literacy Week, in which grade nine students took

part in workshops ranging from debating to writing powerful essays (please enjoy the grade nine

poetry you will see included in this newsletter); Medieval Days, in which grade eight students

learned essentials about trading and culture in the Middle Ages; and the FEO Market, in which

grade nine students had the chance to be entrepreneurs and create their own businesses and

products. A number of field trips occurred including the grade seven excursion to the Science

Centre. Special academic opportunities abounded – two of which were the Great Canadian

Geography Challenge and the Pascal Math Contest. Of course, there were many fun events

sponsored by our school‟s Leadership classes, not the least of which was Tropics Week in which

students dressed in their favorite Polynesian outfits, sampled tasty and healthy tropical fruit

treats, and danced to the musical offerings of one of our student disc jockeys. A very successful

basketball season also concluded on March 2, with all of our teams doing well in the semi-final

round of divisionals. Our junior boys‟ and junior girls‟ teams captured silver! Way to go,

Eagles!

Our school cafeteria is going full force with the new nutritional guidelines which are now in

place. The lunch menu has been revised with healthier options for our students and the feedback

has been very positive. As we go forward in the next quarter of the school year, you will notice

on the March 16 report card that teachers are reporting on the third CBE End, “Character in

Learning”. Teachers will provide a strength based comment on such areas as student initiative,

persistence, and making responsible decisions. To conclude, I wish you and your family a very

relaxing and refreshing Spring Break which will occur from March 26 until March 30.

our second session of Student/Teacher/Parent conferences. The conferences will take place on

March 21st, 22

rd just before Spring Break. We will again be using the F.E. Osborne

Conference Manager online to book interviews. The system will be available for parents to book

starting on Wednesday March 14th

at 12:00 PM and will close on Monday March 19th

at 3:00

PM. Please watch for a written reminder and instructions for how to book your appointments

online that will come home on Tuesday March 13th

Grade 7 News

Courtyard project donations

In the spring of 2012 the students enrolled in the grade 7 courtyard environmental education class will be

responsible for the revitalization and naturalization of F.E. Osborne‟s courtyard space. As a part of this

project the students will be responsible for the planning and landscaping of the entire outdoor space. By

laying down new sod, planting indigenous Alberta plants and building a self-sustaining irrigation system,

we hope to develop a green space that will be enjoyed for years to come.

As you may know, we did receive a small grant from Devon Energy to assist us with this project.

However, funds are still tight so our school would greatly appreciate any donations of gardening equipment

to help us with this endeavour. Tools such as rakes, shovels, hoes, wheelbarrows, gardening gloves etc.

would be appreciated. Or if you know of any companies that would be able to make a contribution, please

forward their contact information to Mr. Wong at mhwong@cbe.ab.ca

Grade 7 Team updates:

In Grade 7 Science, the students are currently working on the heat and temperature unit. This

unit allows the students to learn about heat; students investigate sources and uses of heat

energy and consider the impact of their use on our long-term ability to meet energy needs. In

focusing their studies, students explore different applications,

investigate the scientific principles involved, and consider questions about

the nature of heat. The particle model of matter is introduced to help

students explain their observations and understand relationships between

heat and temperature.

In Grade 7 Math the students are currently working on Unit 3: Fractions, Decimals and Per

Centages. Students explore how these concepts are used in real life applications such as

calculating sales tax and shopping for goods and services.

In Grade 7 Humanities, classes continue to explore the beginnings of Canada, focusing on the

three main groups that started it all: the First Nations, the French, and the British. We have

looked at the cooperation and interdependence among these groups, and will begin to investigate

the conflicts and struggles that eventually occurred (and continue, in certain ways, to occur in

present day!). As well, many classes are completing novel studies. Writing skills

and current events are also part of the routine for several classes.

It’s Getting “HOT” in here.,,,,, Grade 7 Students Visited the New Science

Centre February 13, 14 and 15

Currently the grade 7 students have been participating in the

Heat and Temperature unit in science. As part of this unit it is beneficial

that the students have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on

experience to fully understand thermal energy. On the field trip at TELUS Spark: the New Science Centre the students had the opportunity to experience Extreme Temperature: From the heat of a rocket engine to the freezing cold of liquid nitrogen, this

demonstration was an exploration of extreme temperatures. Spectacular demonstrations

connected students with subjects such as thermal energy and heat transfer. The experiments

combined multimedia visuals with opportunities for students to take measurements using

different instruments. Student critical thinking was encouraged and observation skills were

honed. Additionally, students explored the new exhibits, which included the Earth and Sky and

Energy and Innovation. These exhibits linked directly to the Grade 7 Science Program of

Studies.

Grade 8 Team and Middle Ages Day! Recently, the grade 8 team participated in an exciting endeavor known as “Middle Ages Day” which took place on Friday, February 10th. Students travelled along the Silk Road with many stops along the way. At each city, there was a display of artifacts and time for students to learn about the natural resources from a particular area. Trade occurred at each station and some merry merchants even experienced pitfalls along the route such as highway bandits and the Bubonic Plague! We also had the pleasure of hosting Mrs. Haywood’s Medieval re-enactment group and enjoyed their displays of sword fighting, archery and authentic costumes. This unit leads into the grade 8 study of the Renaissance period where we will focus on the changing worldview during this exciting historical time period!

Japan Day!

Another great celebration was held on Friday, November 25th as our grade 8 students

participated in our annual Japan Day! Students had an opportunity to take part in their

choice of three sessions which could have included Japanese folk dance, manga and anime,

karaoke, martial arts, origami, Japanese fan making, sushi making or Sudoku.

The sessions were full and bursting at the seams with energy! One of the highlights was our

sixteen guests from the Japanese Senior Citizen Society. These volunteers came out and

used their expertise to help teach each of these sessions! Once the sessions were completed,

all 200 of the grade 8‟s headed to the gymnasium for a round robin rubber suit sumo

wrestling competition! Laughter and cheers nearly brought the building down!

The fun didn‟t end at noon but continued on into the afternoon with another new addition of

a Japanese drummer. Masa Kokoro aikido had the students up and learning new rhythms

while the rest of the group clapped and encouraged them on. A special thank you to School

Council who subsidized this event so the cost to students was able to be kept at a minimum.

Also, a round of applause for Ms. Quirk for her hard work and organization of this amazing

event!

GRADE 9

Poems by Grade 9 Students/Authors

The students were asked to write a „definition‟ for an abstract noun of their choice. Here are

samples illustrating their understanding of some abstract nouns through poetry:

Love

Love Is a way Of showing the one that you care

How much they mean to you, to show affection. Such a beautiful thing. Love is. But you need to believe, to

trust, must have faith and be fair, share kindness. Love is so complex it takes many different twists n’ turns yet it is the most searched for thing on the face of Earth. Love is dangerous, it’s blinding too. We only want to believe the best, not the heartbreaking truth. Love invades your dreams, both at night and during the day, it’s so dark, and mighty powerful, but none can take it away.

Love means laughter, and many tearful fights, it’s that bittersweet treat, that all of us get, now or later, it will hit us all eventually. Love is many

colours, it can be pink, or red, or black. Love is preposterous, for those whom seek it be aware, it’s not easy, never easy.

It's a challenge, a life lesson. Love is lustful, and confusing none the less. There is such thing,

because we need it. Be careful, be sharp but love because it’s what’s right,

it’s such a wonderful thing, don’t put it to waste.

It makes people cry,

But just remember that when you fail, you can always strive to succeed, and learn from your mistakes,

failure isn‟t always the option, you can try harder next time.

LIBRARY

Thank you so much to the families who donated their unused puzzles and games to the

library. The staff and students at FEO appreciate your generosity!!

Our absence line (available 24 hours daily) is 403-777-7540, enter 1 at the prompt, and provide the information requested whenever your student is late or absent.

Please keep the office informed of any contact information changes, i.e. telephone numbers for home, work, or cell, email addresses, and address changes so that our information is up to date. We must have a contact name and number for someone who is available to pick up your student in the event of illness or emergency.

Students are not permitted to use cell phones in class. Please do not phone or text your child during

school hours as students are required to have cell phones turned off and put away during class time.

If your child phones home during the day, please ask him/her to leave a message for you so you do not have to phone the school to find out who called you.

If your student will be away from school on a vacation for longer than three days, we need them to

pick up and complete an Extended Absence Form and leave it with the office prior to departure.

If you need to sign your student out early for an appointment, you will need to come into the office in person to do so. If the student is permitted to leave on their own, they must provide the office with your written permission to do so.

Please remind students about appointments and after-school transportation arrangements in the morning, rather than trying to have messages relayed during class time unless absolutely necessary. This will minimize interruptions to the learning of your child’s class.

Please drop your students off at the curb on the street, not in the parking lot. Also, please avoid parking in the crosswalk, as this creates a danger for students crossing the street. The lot is for staff and visitor parking only and is shared with Marion Carson School. If you pick up your student for an appointment, please park in the visitor parking area (south end of the parking lot) as the staff parking is specifically designated to staff members who may be out at an appointment, but returning to school. Thank you for your assistance with this, these measures are put in place for the safety of both F.E. Osborne and Marion Carson students.

Senator Patrick Burns OPEN HOUSE

invited to attend an evening of information, displays, meet the teachers and tour the school.

News from our School Council

At the February School Council meeting, Mr. Hunter presented a D2L workshop to parents, and School

Council discussed ways to assist the school in obtaining funds to refurbish the school‟s tennis courts.

A huge thank you to the former Montgomery School Council for the $28,000 in casino funds contributed to

the FE Osborne School Council. In addition, the FE Osborne casino held in September, 2011 raised

$66,500. These funds will be used to enhance the library, computer technology, fine arts programs,

learning resources and field trips.

All parents and guardians are invited to attend our next School Council meeting which will occur on

Monday, March 12 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. Hope to see you there!
