Stop Asking… Start Asking…1. What do you want to major in? 1. What problem do you want to

solve?

2. What do you want out of life? 2. What is life asking of you?

3. How much money can you make?

3. What do you have to give?

4. How can you achieve something great?

4. How can you add value in a given context?

5. What do you possess inside? 5. What are the needs or opportunities around you?

6. What will make you happy? 6. What are you being summoned to do?

Making Learning Experiential

Creating a Culture of Thinking

• I am generally curious and eager to learn new things.

• I regularly spend time (beyond timetabled lessons) to pursue my intellectual interests (e.g. read up on topics I am interested in, attend enrichment programmes).

• I like to ask questions about the things I am learning.

• I often try to make connections between new things that I am learning and things that I already know.

• If I get stuck with a learning task, I will try to think of how to get round the problem.

Nurture a Growth Mindset

• Think of challenges not as roadblocks, but opportunities for growth

• Use the language of growth – e.g. “I’m not sure I can do it now, but I think I can learn with time and effort.”

Carol Dweck “Mindset:

The New Psychology of Success”

Page 24: 2021 Principal’s Dialogue

Compared to their OECD peers, Singapore students reported higher self-efficacy, but slightly fewer of them have a growth mindset 11. Our students have confidence in their ability to complete tasks, even when facing difficult situations (self-efficacy). About 86% of Singapore students said that they can usually resolve a difficult situation (OECD average: 84%).

12. About 60% of Singapore students possess a growth mindset and believe that their intelligence is something that they can enhance (OECD average: 63%). Students with a growth mindset tend to expend greater effort and show more perseverance when learning something new, putting them in better stead for learning throughout life.

13. At the same time, Singapore students expressed greater fear of failure. About 72% of Singapore students said they worry about what others think of them when they are failing (OECD average: 56%). While a rational and moderate sense of fear may motivate students to work hard and strive for better performance, excessive fear can be disabling.

Undermines Growth Mindset and Grit

Promotes Growth Mindset and Grit

“You’re a natural! I love that.” “You’re a learner! I love that.”

“Well, at least you tried!” “That didn’t work. Let’s talk about how you approached it and what might work better.”

“Great job! You’re so talented!” “Great job! What’s one thing that could have been even better?”

“This is hard. Don’t feel bad if you can’t do it.”

“This is hard. Don’t feel bad if you can’t do it yet.”

“Maybe this just isn’t your strength. Don’t worry – you have other things to contribute.”

“I have high standards. I’m holding you to them because I know we can reach them together.”

Language that cultivates hope

Methodist Walk 2021

• No mass run – each student will commit to running 2.4km as part of the PE programme during the week of 22 Mar 2021

• School is raising funds to pay the 5% co-payment for the installation of the 2 lifts (outside CSL Hall and ISH) which are estimated to cost $1.2m => $60,000

• We are at the design stage for the lifts and MOE will call a tender this year for the project which involves quite a number of other schools. Estimated completion is in 1st half of 2023.

• All donations to be made to a school-specific link on Giving.sg

• Fundraising period from Feb 2021 to 31 Mar 2021

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.
