@ Reddam

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This week was a wonderful one at Reddam House for the year 6 students in particular who

are fast approaching the end of their primary school days. This week, they celebrated

their Year 6 Graduation with a dinner and dance at Bondi Harvest. Dressed to the nines,

the students arrived at the colourful venue, decorated with a rainbow of balloons and a

juicy lolly bar! It was delightful to see the students so relaxed and in such high spirits, ready

to celebrate with their peers, their teachers and later in the evening, their parents. The

dance floor saw some creative moves through the night and with a fair few dress up hats

available, some fun selfies were taken. Once of the most special parts of the night was

the slideshow of the students chowing photographs of each child through the years,

which brought back lovely memories for the children and their parents and friends. Thank

you to Natanya Gross, Penny Bailey, Kim Novick, Natalie Topper, Sarah Jane Lamont, Dani

Tabell and Maya Mesimeris who assisted with the event, spending many hours setting it

up and preparing it for the children. Thank you also to the teachers who again left their

family dinner tables to say farewell to the Year 6s.

The week was made more exciting for the Year 6s as they hosted their Annual Summer

Fete this week. With water activities that took the edge of the heat, and crafts for the

more sedate students, the children from Kindy to Year 5 enjoyed visiting the different

stands and stalls. I really enjoyed seeing how engaged the Year 6s were with the students

from Year K – 5, reminding me again of what a special group of students the class of 2015

really is. Thank you to Mr Hawke for the many hours of work that went into making the fete

such a success and to the parents who supported the students with their wild and wacky

stall ideas!

On Monday night, the Jewish students in our school and their families came together in

Adelaide Hall with Rabbi Kastell to celebrate Chanukah – the Festival of the Lights. The stu-

dents gave an inspired presentation for a lively audience showing that they have learnt a

great deal about the tradition of lighting candles at this time of year. Singing with angelic

voices, the students enjoyed sharing their understanding of the holy days of Chanukah

with us. Thank you to Mrs Taryn Zeh, Ms Karin Mervis, Mr Marcus Bortolotti and Mrs Elli

Bortolotti for the effort and hard work that was put into the event. Thank you also to Rabbi

Kastell, our guest of honour, for making the evening as auspicious as it was.

This week, we also saw our Christmas Nativity and Carols night take place in Adelaide

Hall. AS always, the students performed the story of the nativity beautifully, with narration

by the Year 6s and carols led by Mr and Mrs Bortolotti. The students thoroughly enjoyed

the evening and certainly, there is no question that our very own Santa was the most pop-

ular we have ever seen! Thank you to the Bible Studies students for providing us with such

a beautiful evening and to the teachers who worked very hard over the last few weeks to

ensure that every child felt part of the event. Thank you to Sue Goodman, Marie Manche,

Rowena Hodder, Jo Muirhead, Zoe Curtis, Aimee Broadbent and Anthony Shepherd.

Last weekend, two of our music students playing in their final examinations at the Conserva-

torium. Well done to Ben Price (Year 4) and Isabel Jiang (Year 5)who played with confidence

and grace. It is wonderful to see that two students were there to support each other on the

day! Well done Ben and Isabel.

On the sporting front, I am thrilled to inform you of some outstanding achievements by some

of our students at various events last weekend. Firstly, congratulations to Ruby Glazer (Year 6)

and Talia Shapiro (Year 5) who were selected into the under 14's and 12’s East's Roosters

Touch Team respectively for the Junior State Cup. This is a phenomenal achievement and

highly deserved after all the hard work and training that the girls put in. Well done and best

of luck!

Also, Talia Shapiro (Year 5), Tommy Malki (Year 3)and Daniel Shields (Year 3) participated in

the Little Athletics State Relay Championships at Homebush last weekend. All three of these

students made it into the finals, deserving congratulations. In those finals, Tommy's team

came second and Daniel and Talia's team came 7th. Well done to these fine athletes. I am

sure that there were many, many hours of training and baton changing done to ensure those

results. Keep it up.

Next week, Reddam House Primary School will host our Annual Academic Prize Giving Cere-

monies in Adelaide Hall. We are looking forward to commending the students for their effort

and progress this year as well as awarding the top achievers their high accolades of half and

full colours. Parents are invited to join us for these significant and formal events.

I wish our sports teams good luck for their games this weekend and to those athletes compet-

ing in club tournaments and competitions, know that we are behind you all the way!

Where does Dracula keep his money? (In a blood bank!)

Where does a penguin keep its money? (In a snow bank!)

How do dinosaurs pay their bills? (With Tyrannosaurus checks!)

This week money and shopping has been the hot topic in the Kindergarten classes and we

have had lots of jokes and fun too! The students have been identifying the Australian coins

and notes. Can you name the Australian animals on the 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins? (Without

peeking!)

We also turned our classrooms into shops where the students had the opportunity to role-

play; shop owners, cashiers and buyers. Much to our delight they were also able to consoli-

date their learning and use their new knowledge, by supporting the Year 6 Fete on Wednes-

day.

Here are some Kindergarten ideas on what different values of money can buy:

What can you buy with $1?

Egor: Some pencils

Hussein: A little ball

Myla: Smarties

What can you buy with $100?

Joshua : A house with antique furniture

Parker : Pictures by famous artists

Amber: A racing car

What can you buy with $1000?

Abigail: You can buy StarLily, a giant unicorn.

Noah O: You can buy a big, big house.

Salvador: You can buy a big, chunky, golden chain!

KINDERGARTEN

Food, glorious food! What a week we have had investigating food in Year 1!

Karen in the canteen helped us make and bake some delicious bread.

We also had access to the art cupboard and got creative making various 'food' from paper,

plates, felt, pipe cleaners and sparkles.

At home, we have completed a food diary and have been sharing this with the class. It's in-

teresting to see how different our meals are.

YEAR 1

YEAR 2

Year two students went on an excursion to Brasserie Bread at Banksmeadow. The children

went on an interesting tour of the bakery where they got to observe bakers making bread.

Later they went to the pastry section where they watched bakers very busy making choco-

late croissants and Christmas tarts. The students were also presented with a very informative

session in the factory section on the process of breadmaking from wheat to bread. The high-

light of the excursion for the students was definitely when they got to make their own Pizza

and twisted bread plait. The children enjoyed the "hands on experience" and especial-

ly enjoyed eating their creations when we returned to school. It was such a wonder-

ful excursion.

The Year 3 students have had an incredible week filled with feedback, celebrations and the

Year 6 fete! Could it get any better? By the looks of their smiles, it’s a hard week to top!

The students have applied themselves so well during the entire revision and examination peri-

od, and this week they were truly beside themselves with anticipation, eager to find out what

their results might be. However, if you were to ask any of our mature Year 3 students what the

most important aspect of the examinations are, most of them would reply, ‘the preparation

and the process’ - rather than the result. Yet this did not overshadow the thrill of seeing their

hard work marked after such an intense but rewarding period. Fantastic work Year 3!

The Year 6 fete was also a highlight this week. The Year 3 students were able to participate in

games and activities as well as purchase some fun toys and treats. The sun was shining and

students from all year groups had a fabulous time supporting the Year 6 group in their final

fundraiser for the primary school.

Lastly, a big congratulation goes out to all of the talented Bible and Jewish Studies students

who performed at their end of year celebrations. Both evenings were spectacular and each

lovely Year 3 voice made a beautiful contribution to the night. Thank you for your efforts and

you should be very proud of all of your hard work this year. Well done Year 3.

YEAR 3

The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 36 Friday 27 November 2015 Page 6

As we head towards the end of a busy year, with examinations and feedback this week,

Year 4 have been commemorating the many celebrations occurring across the world

and within our school community as well as reflecting on stereotypes linked to these.

In Week 6 students participated in Remembrance day reflections, where their knowledge

of ANZAC's enhanced their understanding of the purpose of the day and the rever-

ence required. This week students have participated in the Chanukah and Christmas

concerts. All students sang and performed exceptionally well. Continuing with Celebra-

tions and Remembrance, students researched Thanksgiving held this week. Stu-

dents shared with classmates what they are grateful for. Here are some of the students'

reflections:

I love Chanukah because we get to eat lots of oily foods. It's important because instead

of the small bottle of oil lasting one day, it lasted eight days because of a miracle Noah Shelest

I love Christmas because we get presents and I enjoy seeing my family. Christmas is im-

portant because Jesus was born then and he is the son of God Isolde Rydge

I love that we get to sit around the table and give thanks for what we have, do and get

on Thanks Giving. I mostly love to eat pumpkin pie then too Matthew Gross

In Moral studies we learnt about stereotypes and I found most stereotypes aren't true and

that they mostly judge people by popular belief Haines Sayer

Students have enjoyed sharing and learning about these celebrations, demonstrating

great respect towards those who are different.

YEAR 4

Over the past two terms, Year 5 have been busily working in groups on parodies of well-

known songs. On Thursday, they performed these parodies to their classmates and the quali-

ty of some items of work was simply outstanding.

If you were sitting in the audience, you would have recognised many of the songs that stu-

dents created parodies to. Taylor Swift would have been very proud of the creative way in

which students transformed her songs into skits about baking and various other items of food.

Year 5 delivered their parodies with confidence, expression and clear vocal projection. They

are to be congratulated on their efforts and as you'll see below, many students did go to ex-

treme levels of effort in terms of their use of costuming and props. Well done Year 5!

DRAMA

On Monday night we celebrated Chanukah with a Chanukah presentation. All Jewish chil-

dren in years K-6 participated. It was a wonderful evening of beautiful singing, explanations

of why we celebrate Chanukah and Rabbi Kastel demonstrated how to light the Chanukiah.

The students wore glow in the dark dreidel glasses and had light up candles which added to

the festive atmosphere. The hard work and effort really paid off and we were very proud of

all the students.

CHANUKAH PRESENTATION

Wednesday night saw the annual Christmas concert take place in Adelaide Hall. It was a

spectacular event with stunning costumes, beautiful voices and great acting. Bible Studies

students and parents sang along to some favourite Christmas carols, Santa came to visit and

everyone feasted on delicious treats. It was a wonderful concert celebrating the birth of Je-

sus Christ. Special thanks to Ms Manche for her tireless efforts! Merry Christmas all!

This week the Year 6 students held our annual summer fete. They had the opportunity to de-

velop their entrepreneurial skills through managing their group together with gaining experi-

ence with the organisation, planning and energy required to run an enterprise. Throughout

the term, the students had been working collaboratively to organise their stalls and the fruits

of their labour were rewarded with a memorable summer’s day.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 5 could enjoy activities such as face painting, finger knit-

ting and having a Polaroid photo taken with friends. Healthy fruit smoothies, homemade lem-

onade and fruit kebabs were for sale together with a range of other tasty homemade treats.

There were a range of skill games on offer including water balloon cricket, basketball and

target practice. Children could also try their luck hitting Year 6 children (and willing teachers!)

with wet sponges or take a ride on a motorised unicycle!

Much fun, excitement and laughter was had by all. Congratulations to the Year 6 children for

creating a wonderful occasion and we thank their parents and carers for their all their sup-

port.
