HERBERT HURD(t) 041 364 1051 (e) [email protected] BE JUST - FEAR NOT
MAD HATTERSCivvies Day at Herbert Hurd last week was a fun affair. The theme was “Mad Hatters” and pupils showed great creativity, coming up with some truly imaginative headgear.
BLOOD DRIVEEvery year Herbert Hurd Primary partners with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) by participating in a blood donation challenge. Pupils encourage family members and friends to
donate blood during a specified month, and, in March this year 178 members of the wider Herbert Hurd family donated blood to the SANBS.
Jenna Grobler, a grade seven pupil, recruited the most blood donors. Here she poses with her prize presented to her by a representative of the SANBS.
Here, grade one teacher, Miss Evans, poses with her pupils. Her class, Room 4, won the prize for achieving the highest percentage participation in the blood donation challenge.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTEvery Tuesday Herbert Hurd pupils make and bring extra sandwiches to school. These sandwiches are then delivered to Livingstone Hospital oncology department where they are distributed to the out-patients waiting for treatment. Herbert Hurd pupils really put their hearts into this initiative and many include little notes of love and encouragement in the sandwich wrapping.
Here, grade three pupils help pack the crates before they are collected for delivery.
CREATE A CABLE CANVASGone are the days of subtly trying to hide all the cables around your home. Why not take a few tips from these creatives and expose not only cables, but also your artistic side.
Simply use wire clips along the wall to construct a design you’d be happy to look at every day. Here is an example of what can be done:
This is also a great cheat for livening up any dull wall you may have in your home.

The biker is the only jacket you’ll never tire of and certainly won’t
part with it. Ever!
Babe in a biker jacket - who can forget Sandra Dee’s transformation from prissy prom queen to big-time punk princess in Grease?
Once upon a time, biker jackets were the territory of those hairy, tattooed blokes on Harleys - the ones you didn’t take home to meet the folks! Now the motor- cycle jacket has evolved into a fashion must. It’s an instant style boost with its unmistakable surfeit of zips, snaps, studs and hardware plus quilted patches in that boxy arrogant man-nish cut that simply goes with everything and suits everyone.
GO FOR PLEATHER.Yes, real genuine leather is the top prize but set your sights on pleather or leather–look as: a) it’s ethically better for your karma and b) it’s so much better on your pocket.

What did we learn from all this ? 1.Work hard - The hen wasn’t afraid of hard work even if nobody else on the farm would help her2. Ignore naysayers – The other farm animals told the little red hen that she was crazy to work hard while they were lazing about and having fun.3. Fairness – The animals who didn’t share in the work didn’t earn any of the bread. 4. Rewards – Hard work pays great rewards in the end. The Little Red Hen had some delicious bread to eat and share with her family while the other animals had nothing.

Each class also received a piece of white material to decorate
according to the birthday theme. These pieces of cloth will be sewn together as a banner for the interschools sports day. Part of all this excitement was a tree planting ceremony. Seven indigenous trees were planted. The learners thoroughly enjoyed eating the cake and celebrating the Birthday of the school they love so much. Happy Birthday DF! Veels Geluk DF! Hiep-Hiep Hoera!

On Friday 15 May, Pearson High School’s Interact club, hosted their annual Granny Tea in the Deary Hall. Grandmothers and Grandfathers from old age homes in the Summerstrand area and as far as Kabega Park, were invited. Interact learners act as hosts and hostesses - each table is decorated with gifts and tasty treats. The “golden oldies” enjoyed their tasty treats while being entertained by the talented Pearson learners. The entertainment ranged from music, dancing and singing. A highlight was the “golden oldies” joining in the line-dance. A marked feature of this years’ granny tea were the number of young Pearson boys who acted as hosts. Pearson Interact lived out their motto: Interact Changes Lives & Service above self.
INTEREACT GRANNY TEAThe Music Department of Pearson High School held their prestigious Proms Concert, on Friday, 22 May, in their school hall. The versatility of the music department was clearly noticeable and the learners excelled in providing an evening of good music. All the talent Pearson has to offer came to the fore: the concert band, wind band, jazz band,
choir and the string ensemble. From the powerful opening number ‘Carmina Burana’ to the very popular ‘Uptown Funk’ as closing number, it was evident that the musicians enjoyed what they were doing. The Pearson Proms concert was the start of Pearson’s Reunion/Founders day weekend of celebrating 89 years of excellence in education.
