SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERSGrey was proud to present the musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers this past term. The show was staged at The Savoy Theatre and was a great accomplishment that relied on the skills of numerous people. Direction was handled by Pieter Rademeyer,

Musical Direction by Shawn Lyon and Choreography by Siobhan Day (Collegiate Junior). As for the main cast members, one can only say “Outstanding”. The lead roles of Adam and Milly were brought to life brilliantly in the hands of James van der Merwe

(Grade 9) and Candice Millar (NMMU student). Their singing and acting ability is truly remarkable. The rest of the talented cast and the Grey High Orchestra all contributed to an outstanding production of which we are very proud. Well done to all concerned!

EXCELLENCE REWARDEDCollegiate is very proud of two Matric 2014 young ladies, Kirsti Limbert and Ashley Vrancken, who were awarded Vice-Chancellor’s bursaries to study at NMMU. They were honoured along with other recipients at the annual Vice-Chancellor’s Awards Banquet. Kirsti earned eight distinctions in the Matric exams and Ashley Vrancken, seven distinctions.

BUDDING MATHEMATICIANSAcademic excellence starts early at Collegiate Girls’ High School! The Collegiate maths team of four Grade Eight learners participating in the Junior section of the annual Alexander Road High School Mathematics relay, came FIRST in the second round! A number of schools participate so this is indeed a wonderful achievement!

EC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION HONOURS COLLEGIATEWhat is more uplifting than to see young people reaching out to others in the community and giving to society in a selfless manner. Two Collegiate girls did just that recently which was brought to the attention of the school when nominated for the “Collegiate Girl of the Week” Award. On her 18th birthday, Matric pupil, Amy Stickells quietly, and without anyone knowing, counted her blessings and took a group of children from the EP Children’s Home out and spoilt them, instead of having all of the attention on

herself. This act of kindness was never publicised, and it was by pure accident that we found out about Amy’s actions. Her generosity and for making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than herself, makes Amy someone to emulate. Grade eight pupil, Zania Ingram, helped paint the new Aloe Igazi Paediatric Oncology Unit at the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital over a weekend this month. Zania has shown commitment to those less fortunate than herself, and has made a real difference in the lives of others. Amy Stickells Zania Adams

BRINGING HAPPINESS AT EASTER TIMEImagine an Easter without chocolate eggs and then think how many people in the Nelson Mandela Metropole will have an Easter like that. The Collegiate Interact Club sprang into action and held a drive to collect at least 1000 eggs for the children at Van der Kemp Primary School in Salt Lake. The total eggs collected reached 2105! Van der Kemp Primary School is a very under-resourced school with 688 learners and only eleven teachers. However, the children were sitting quietly in their grades on the floor (the netball court, as they do not have a school hall). They were very well behaved and had been prepared for our visit. Mrs Debbie Jephta, the Principal, welcomed us and the two Head Prefects thanked us all for coming and welcomed us again. This made us feel honoured and valued for being there.

INGREDIENTS400g roll TODAY short crust pastry4 tbsp. strawberry jam2 egg yolks125g smooth cottage cheese125ml fresh creamfresh raspberries (for garnish)icing sugar (for dusting)

METHODPreheat the oven to 180˚C. Roll out the pastry to a thickness of about 1.5mm.

Line a 20cm loose-bottomed baking tin with the pastry, making sure to press the pastry around the sides of the tin and to prick the base with a fork.Soften the jam with a spoon, and spread it over the bottom of the pastry layer.Mix the yolks, cottage cheese and cream, then pour the mixture over the layer of jam.Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until set.

Once the tart has cooled, arrange the raspberries over the top, and sprinkle with icing sugar. Serve with fresh cream, mascarpone or ice cream.

Known as nature’s candy, wild raspberries have been gathered for consumption by humans for thousands of years. With their rich color, sweet juicy taste and antioxidant power, it is no wonder raspberries remain one of the world’s most consumed berries.

Raspberries can range in color from the popular red and black varieties to purple, yellow or golden. Each color berry has a unique composition of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Eating one cup of raw raspberries will provide 54% of your vitamin C needs, 12% of vitamin K, 6% of folate, 5% of vitamin E, iron, and potassium, and 41% of manganese

needs for the day as well as lesser amounts of thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and copper.

Raspberries contain the antioxidants alpha and beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and choline.

Raspberries are also a powerful source of polyphenols such as

anthocyanin, flavonols and ellagitannins, which decrease

oxidative damage from free radicals and have shown potential in animal and human studies for preventing or

reducing risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

THEODOR HERZL SCHOOLS WELCOME NEW CAMPUS HEAD

WHAT TO WATCH

At a moving Term 1 final assembly, Theodor Herzl Schools bid a tearful farewell to outgoing Head of Campus, Mr Stephen Fay, and a warm welcome to his successor, Mr John Alexander. The change of leadership comes after more than a decade, marked by positive growth. Mr Alexander, 53, has held senior management positions at Edgemead High School and International School of Hout Bay, both in Cape Town, and, most recently, Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal. “Never stop chasing your dreams; strive to make your lives extraordinary,” was Mr Fay’s parting message to pupils. He presented the school with a trophy to be awarded each year to the Grade 12 pupil “who embodies the Theodor spirit that ‘if you will it, it is no dream’.” Mr Fay is relocating to Cape Town with his wife, Dr Lee-Ann Jones, and young son, Matthew.

CHANGE OF LEADERSHIP: Outgoing Head of Theodor Herzl Schools Campus, Stephen Fay, right, warmly welcomes his successor, John Alexander, to the school.

SCIENCE STAR 3RD IN SATheodor’s Sciences pupils excelled in the 2014 National Science Olympiad, the results of which has just been released. Most notably, Sumien van Zyl (pictured here with Life Sciences teacher Mrs Tanya Goodall) achieved a gold merit, with 93%, and was placed 3rd in South Africa in the Grade 10 Life Sciences Olympiad! The Grade 9 exam was written by 1751 pupils, a mere 6% of whom

achieved 80% and above – Theodor’s Isabella Liss and Muhammad Adam both among that special group. Congratulations also to our silver certificate (60% and above) pupils: Abuzer Lookmanjee and Karli Nortier. In Grade 10, 1424 pupils wrote the Life Sciences exam and 17% achieved merits. Jodi Goldberg, Kayla Shefer and Zaakirah Dudhia achieved gold merits, and Emma Fourie a silver.

Lekker rus, Juffrou Maarschalk!!

Civvies day at Herbert Hurd was a true reflection of our ‘rainbow nation’ last week when pupils came dressed as ‘Proud South Africans’. There were rugby players and rugby supporters, Xhosa maidens with bright beads and braided skirts and South African flags

and Vuvuzelas in abundance. Civvies days at Herbert Hurd are used as fund raising opportunities and each child pays R5.00 for the privilege of dressing up.

FESTIVE FUN WALK AND FAMILY DAYA record number of learners and parents took part in this year’s Fun Walk. As in previous years, every grade could choose a colour or theme for ‘dressing up’. Families also camped in large numbers. An array of jumping castles was definitely a winner, especially the zip-lining jumping castle, according to Phindo Nobadula. The Parents Association also treated the staff to a scrumptious meal. An addition this year was the “Dunk-a-Teacher” event that was hosted as a fundraiser to convert the swimming-pool into a heated pool. Emma Lucas commented, “I really enjoyed having a successful go at dunking Mr Foaden, our headmaster. However; I would not have been disappointed at all if I did not manage to dunk him.” Nicole Cherry added,” I loved the music and that we were allowed to speak to families on the microphone.”
