Isaiah 50:10 Whoever walks in the darkness

and who ever shines a ray of light, trust in the name of the Lord.

Thoughts about the monthly bible verse for December 2019

Advent is a contemplative time. Candlelight flickering in the dark invites us to reflect... Those who walk in the dark have no easy way. Everyone who has ever had to look for a way under a covered night sky without any orientation from the moon or starry sky and with no flashlight, knows this. You don't see where you're going, or whether you're being followed. Walking in the dark is tedious, scary and dangerous. Hardly any-one likes to walk in the dark.

But there is not only external darkness. Even more distressing is the dark night of the soul, the inner night: depression, feelings

of guilt, grief, the defeats and worries of everyday life. A lot of things can darken our view in such a way that we can only but see black. Isaiah knows there is such a thing. There are people who "go in the dark-ness" and to whom "no ray of light shines", not just for one night.

The next part of our watch-word then says: “trust in the name of the Lord.” Notice in the first part that it does not say: ‘they who sit in the dark-ness’; nor does it say: whoever waits in the darkness for God to send them a ray of light. It says: whoever walks in dark-ness, trust in the name of the Lord; trust blindly, so to speak, while carrying on walk-ing. This is difficult for many people.

For a person to trust God in this way, it often takes two things: 1. The hopelessness that throws a person entirely onto God and 2. the experi-ence that there can be a way with God even in the darkness of life. But, why? So that, at some point a light will shine on

my dark road again and I can see my way? Sometimes, yes. Or could it also mean that I can carry on walking on my way – even in darkness?

I find this particular detail so amazing about this verse. It does not say, "Whoever is in darkness," but "whoever goes in darkness." "Going" is a basic attitude of faith. Our God is the “with-God”, the “God who goes with us”. "I am there" or "I am" – this is how God, through Moses, introduces Himself to the Israelites (Exodus 3:14b). He says, "I will be with you, I will go with you – through the desert, and yes, also through the darkness. And certainly then, when you can no longer see where your path is taking you."

Isaiah reminds the people in exile who live under foreign rule of this basic attitude in faith: do not stop, do not let the suffering pin you down. Trust in God. Even when others deter-mine over your life; when life is difficult or seemingly hopeless, when it seems like you can’t go on. There are no quick solu-

tions here. But it is precisely when you don’t know how or where to go or where to turn that you can go on regardless with God – even in the dark.

It applies to each one of us per-sonally: even if I no longer see a way, I can still continue walking with a God whose name is called: "Immanuel": I'm here, I'm with you, I'm not leaving you. This does not mean that the darkness of life will simply illuminate. It is possible that it will remain dark. But, the dark-ness loses its power, that dark, deadly power that threatens to devour all joy and hope. There is one who is more powerful, the LORD who is the God of both the light and the darkness. I can entrust myself to this God with all my darkness and keep going…

Thank you, Lord my God, that there is no journey, no way, where you are not there with me, going with me. Stay with us, go with us, when it gets dark. And let it become light again – light again - with Christmas - in our hearts. Amen.


Watchword for the Year 2020

A moving scene. A fundamentally hon-est man, this father! A seriously ill child. Such a terrible disease can shake any trace of existing faith deep-ly. Nevertheless, he brings his anguish and his "unbelief" to Jesus and begs him for help.

Is the red figure in the artist Stefanie Bahlinger's graphic this father, red from effort to save his son? Red from crying and screaming for help? Are the outstretched arms a gesture of sur-render? Time and again he has tried not to give up hope. Now he can no longer, hangs tightly, hangs in the air. In doing so, he stands for all people who have lost the ground under their feet and long for salvation.

For the insecure who do not know whom they can still trust or what they can still believe in. For those looking in vain for orientation. And also for those, who are sure of their faith and whose faith is suddenly shaken by a difficult experience.

Jesus comes to the Father at just the right time and intervenes. An abrupt end to an exciting story...

Eine bewegende Szene. Ein grundehrli-cher Mann, dieser Vater! Ein schwer er-kranktes Kind. So eine schlimme Krank-heit kann eine komplette Glaubensexis-tenz erschüttern. Trotzdem mutet der Va-ter sein Anliegen und seinen „Unglauben“ Jesus zu und fleht ihn um Hilfe an.

Ist die rote Figur in der Grafik der Künst-lerin Stefanie Bahlinger dieser Vater, rot vor Anstrengung, seinen Sohn zu retten? Rot vom Weinen und Schreien um Hilfe? Sind die ausgebreiteten Arme eine Geste der Kapitulation? Immer wieder hat er versucht, die Hoffnung nicht aufzugeben. Jetzt kann er nicht mehr, hängt fest, hängt in der Luft. Damit steht er für alle Geschöpfe, die den Boden unter den Fü-ßen verloren haben und sich nach Ret-tung sehnen. Für die Unsicheren, die nicht wissen, wem sie noch vertrauen o-der an was sie noch glauben können. Für die vergeblich nach Orientierung Su-chenden. Und auch für die, die sich ihres Glaubens gewiss sind und deren Glaube plötzlich durch eine Grenzerfahrung ins Wanken gerät.

Jesus kommt genau zum richtigen Zeit-punkt zu dem Vater und greift ein. Abrup-tes Ende einer aufregenden Geschichte…

Aber es gibt ja nicht nur äußere Dunkelheit. Noch bedränglicher ist oft die innere Nacht: Depres-sion, Schuldgefühle, Trauer, die Niederlagen und Sorgen des Alltags. Vieles kann den Blick so verdunkeln, dass ich nur noch schwarzsehe.

Jesaja weiß, so etwas gibt es. Es gibt Menschen die “in der Fins-ternis gehen“ und denen “kein Lichtstrahl scheint“, nicht nur eine Nacht lang. – Und dann? Auf den “Namen des Herrn“ sol-len sie vertrauen. Es heißt nicht: “Wer in der Finsternis ist, warte bis Gott ihm einen Lichtstrahl schickt.“ Und auch nicht: “… der vertraue darauf, dass Gott ihn ans Licht führen wird.“

Nein, wer in der Finsternis geht, soll auf Gott vertrauen. Er oder sie soll Gott sozusagen blind vertrauen. Das fällt vielen Men-schen schwer. Gerade Gott ge-genüber.

Damit ein Mensch Gott so ver-trauen kann, braucht es oft zwei Dinge: 1. Die Hoffnungslosigkeit die einen Menschen ganz auf Gott (zurück) wirft und 2. die Erfahrung, dass es mit Gott

Gedanken zum Monatsspruch für Dezember 2019

Die Adventszeit ist eine besinn-liche Zeit. Kerzenlicht im Dun-keln lädt uns ein zum Nachden-ken… Wer im Finstern geht, hat keinen leichten Weg. Das weiß jeder, der schon einmal bei be-decktem Nachthimmel einen Weg suchen musste ohne Ta-schenlampe, ohne Orientierung durch den Mond und den Ster-nenhimmel.

Man sieht weder wo es lang-geht, noch, wo man hintritt, und auch nicht, ob man verfolgt wird. Im Dunkeln zu gehen, ist mühsam, unheimlich, gefähr-lich. Kaum einer macht gern ei-nen längeren Weg im Dunkeln.

eben auch in der Finsternis des Lebens einen Weg geben kann. Aber, warum eigentlich? Damit, dass irgendwann doch wieder ein Licht in meiner Dunkelheit auf-leuchten wird und ich den Weg sehen kann? Oder damit, dass ich selbst in der Finsternis wei-tergehen und weiterleben kann?

Dieses Detail finde ich so er-staunlich an diesem Vers. Da steht nicht: “Wer in der Finsternis ist“, sondern, “wer in der Finster-nis geht“. “Gehen“ – das ist eine Grundhaltung des Glaubens. Unser Gott ist der “mitgehende“ Gott. “Ich bin da“ oder “ich bin“ – so stellt sich Gott durch Mose den Israeliten vor (2.Mose 3,14b). Er sagt damit: “Ich werde mit euch sein, mit euch gehen. Auch durch die Wüste. Auch durch die Finsternis. Und ganz bestimmt gerade dann, wenn ihr nicht mehr sehen könnt, wohin euch euer Weg führt.“

An diese Grunderfahrung erin-nert Jesaja die Menschen im Exil, die unter fremder Herrschaft le-ben: Bleibt nicht stehen, lasst euch vom Leid nicht festnageln. Vertraut auf Gott. Selbst dann, wenn andere über euch bestim-

men. Wenn die Lebensumstän-de schwierig sind. Und rasche Lösungen ausbleiben. Gerade dann gilt: Mit Gott könnt ihr selbst im Finstern weitergehen.

Dasselbe gilt für jeden von uns ganz persönlich: Auch wenn ich keinen Weg mehr sehe, kann ich mit Gott weiter durchs Leben gehen. “Jahwe“, “Immanuel“: Ich bin da, ich bin bei dir, ich verlas-se dich nicht. Die Dunkelheiten des Lebens werden dadurch nicht einfach erhellt, wie man einen Lichtschalter anmacht. Möglich ist‘s, dass es dunkel bleibt. Aber die Finsternis ver-liert ihre Macht, jene dunkle, tödliche Macht, die alle Lebens-freude verschlingt. Es gibt ei-nen, der mächtiger ist, der HERR ist über Licht und Finsternis. Ihm darf ich mich anvertrauen mit al-len meinen Dunkelheiten.

Danke Gott, dass es keinen Weg gibt, den Du nicht mitgehst. Bleibe bei uns, wenn es Dunkel wird. Lass es dann auch wieder hell – wieder Weihnachten wer-den – in unseren Herzen. Amen.


Partnerschaft mit VELKD 1 und EKD 2

Eine Konsultation der Süd-Süd Partnerkirchen der EKD fand vom 4.-7.11.2019 in Dresden statt. Die Kirchen von Brasili-en3, Chile4, La Plata5 und Süd-afrika6 haben teilgenommen. Besprochen wurden die Mög-lichkeiten wie und auf welchen Gebieten Kooperation möglich wären, z.B. Pfarreraustausch durch Entsendung von Rent-nern; Ermutigung von Jugend-lichen an Programmen (Freizeiten) der jeweiligen Kir-chen teilzunehmen Eine Sorge bereitet die Polari-sierung der Gesellschaft und der wachsende Rechtsextre-mismus in allen Ländern.

Die Synode der VELKD fand vom 7.-9.11.2019 in Dresden statt. Im Mittelpunkt stand das Thema YFriedenZ und dessen zentrale Rolle im Gottesdienst, Anbetung, Liturgie und Theologie. Wie su-chen wir nach Frieden und wo wir Werkzeuge des Friedens sind.

Die Synode der EKD vom 9. bis 13.11.2019 fand ebenfalls in Dresden statt. Das Thema war YAuf dem Weg zu einer Kirche der Gerechtigkeit und des Frie-densZ. Offen und ehrlich wurden neue Wege diskutiert, wie die Kirche ihre Rolle als Werkzeug des Friedens erfüllen kann. (ekd.de/synode-der-ekd-10772.htm)

Die Evang.-Luther. Landeskirche Hannovers feiert in diesem Jahr 100 Jahre Missionarische Dienste. Ich wurde zu einigen Workshops eingeladen und konnte mich mit Beiträgen über Ymissionale KircheZ und multi-kulturelle Gemeinden einbringen. Es war lehrreich und ermutigend dabei zu sein.

In Hermannsburg (D) nahm ich am Missionstag teil und pre-digte. Bei dem Partnerschafts-treffen (zwischen Gemeinden in Südafrika und Deutschland) konnte ich unsere Kapkirche vorstellen. Angesprochen wur-de unter anderem die Notwen-digkeit, Partnerschaften so zu gestalten, dass wir miteinge-schlossen werden.

Eine Dreiecks-Partnerschaft zwi-schen Deutschland, ELCSA-COD und Kapkirche fördert das Lernen voneinander.

Die Synode der Vereinigten Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche im Südlichen Afrika (VELKSA) wird vom 8-10.5.2020 in Namibia stattfinden.

Partnership VELKD1 and EKD2

From 4-7.11.2019 a Partner-ship Consultation between EKD and its South-South Part-ners took place in Dresden (D). Churches from Brazil, Chile, the La Plata and South Africa participated. We had fruitful discussions on co-operation between the churches as well as possible exchanges of pas-tor’s and youth programmes. The role of the church in a po-larized society was discussed. The EKD synod was held from 10-9.11.2019 in Dresden, Ger-many. The theme: “The church on its way, seeking justice and peace.” Frank debate took place, looking at ways in which the church could engage in ini-tiatives on matters of peace and reconciliation.

The Desk for Mission celebrat-ed 100 years of service to the church. I was invited to two workshops where I was asked to share on the multi-lingual and multi-cultural congrega-tion and the opportunities the missional habits create in being a church. These work-shops were very encour-aging and of great value.

Partnership South Africa - Germany

In Hermannsburg (D) I partici-pated in a meeting of South Afri-can – German Partnerships be-tween congregations. Such part-nerships started during the Apartheid era and in many ways continue as such. The question is: do we want to become part of a network of partnerships between congregations on ELCSA_COD, Hanover and us? – It could be-come a wonderful way of learning from and with each other of what it means to be church here and now. Please let me know what your thoughts are on this matter.

20 years Organ Jubilee

Soli Deo Gloria Glory to GOD alone

We celebrated the organ jubilee with two concerts. Prof. Albert Troskie (organ) and Segun Soyemi (counter-tenor) performed the con-cert on Thanksgiving as well as the concert as part of the organ crawl of the Feather Market Organ Society.

A short history of our organ

To accompany hymns, a harmonium was used in Rink Street and at the beginning in Springfield. This is still in the back of our church. Later, Adelheid Wedemann bought the pipe organ used in the house of Prof. van Zyl and donated it to the congregation. Pastor Edinger and wife started the collections for a new organ. Donations from the congregation, from South Africa and abroad made it possible to start building the organ in 1999. The pipes of the old Wedemann or-gan had been integrated. The inauguration of the new pipe organ took place on 14 November 1999 during a Divine Service, fol-lowed by a concert.

Harvest Thanksgiving

A big thank-you for the many gifts that adorned the altar. They were handed over to the needy in our congregation and to Wabamkela Educare. Each child could even take home a plate of vegetables .
