AWSUM Celebrity Interview

AWSUM News caught up with sensational YouTube comedy wondergirl, Suzelle DIY, who has just landed her very own slot on Comedy Central – not bad for a poppie with a hectic wannabe accent and an ever-silent best friend! Suzelle DIY’s

YouTube channel has more than 48 000 subscribers and picks up 40 000 views on the day a new episode launches.)

Q: Congratulations on the latest feather in your cap – your very own slot on Comedy Central. How does it feel to play in the big league now? A: I feel like a million rands. It has been a dream come true to watch myself on TV.

Q: Who is Suzelle really? Tell us a bit more about yourself – likes, dislikes, favourite movie, favourite song, favourite book.

A: I’m just a small town girl with a passion for DIY, braai-ing and dinner parties. My movie of the moment is the How To

Be Single and my favourite book is How to do Just about Everything by The Reader’s Digest.

Q: Why do you think you are so popular? What is your secret to success?A: I think people like that the DIY in my videos is useful, and that sometimes things go wrong. My secret is to keep going no matter what happens!Q: What are your top five DIY tips

for women like yourself who like to be glamorous and never get their hands dirty while doing the dirty workA: Right, this is a good one. It’s important to always look your best no matter what you are busy doing.• Wear an apron when you are in the kitchen.• Use safety goggles when you chop onions to stop your eyes from tearing up and smudging your make-

up.• Run your nails over a bar of soap before you do the

gardening. It will keep the dirt from getting under your nails.

•Buy a box of disposable gloves. They are great to use for any DIY project.

• I like to cut up plastic packets and lay them down on my work surface to prevent any mess escaping.

Q: What do you do for fun and relaxation in your leisure time? A: I like to go for a coffee with my best friend, Marianne. I like to watch cooking shows and look for DIY ideas on the Google.

Suzelle DIY

Page 2 AWSUM NEWS, MAY 2016

Q: Other celebrities, across a spectrum, like Nataniël, Hellen Zille, Tim Noakes and Jan-Hendrik, want to be associated with you. Why is that? What do they gain? What do you gain? A: I think they are just excited to meet me because they want to soak up some of my creativity.

Q: Where do you get your ideas from for your videos? Which episode is your favourite? Why?A: I get my ideas from all sorts of places. I find them on the Google and in magazines. I also get sent a lot of great ideas from my fans. My favourite episode is How to Make a Braai Pie, because that was my first video to go viral.

Q: Are you English or Afrikaans? Who are your biggest fans – English or Afrikaans-speaking people? Why do you think is that so? A: I’m Afrikaans, but I like to speak in English in my videos so that the peoples overseas can also enjoy the videos. Shame. I think my fans are a real mix of different cultures.

Q: What is the single thing that you enjoy most when creating and crafting a new episode?A: I love filming it with Marianne and my neighbour Hennie. We always have so much fun together.

Q What DIY message do you have for our readers (parents of schoolgoing children)?A: Parents you must teach your kids that their creativity is their number one tool!

Fun Walk festivitiesThe Summerwood Fun Walk of 2016 was a great success. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially by the learners who could “sink” their teachers in the dunk-tank.

The Grade 2 learners dressed up as “Princes and Princesses” and made their own creative crowns. The Grade 4s looked festive in their Hawaiian costumes.

Nicholas Gillespie and Elana de Villiers made the Grade 3s proud with their beautiful pirate costumes.

Six players from the Eastern Cape have been selected by Junior Springbok coach Dawie Theron as part of his 28-man squad that will do battle at World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Manchester, England, from 7 to 25 June.

Most notably is that Eastern Province centre Jeremy Ward will lead the team in the showpiece, while his provincial team-mate Junior Pokomela has been named as vice-captain, alongside 2015 SA Schools captain, DHL Western Province lock Ernst van Rhyn.

Joining Ward and Pokomela are hooker Tango Balekile, prop Nicolaas Oosthuizen, scrumhalf James Hall and fullback Keanu Vers.

SARU Kings Academy manager and Currie Cup head coach, Robbi Kempson, said he was very proud of the players that had been selected.

“They are all products of the SARU Kings Academy, they are professional athletes and have played phenomenally well as a unit last year, in the U19 Currie Cup 1st division

competition,” he said. The Eastern Province U19 team won 11 of

their 12 regular matches and went on to be crowned overall champions last year.

“I have always said that Jeremy was a strong ambassador for rugby in the region and I am confident that he will make the people of South Africa proud as he leads this SA U20 team, and the same can be said for Junior Pokomela, who is a phenomenal rugby player,” said Kempson.

Kempson also complimented the SA Kings academy staff, Mzwandile Stick, Nadus Nieuwoudt and Sean ‘O Dea, for their contributions they had made in developing top class professional rugby players.

Charl Crous, Chief Operations Officer of the Southern Kings franchise, which has contracted both Hall and Pokomela for the 2016 season, said it was a testament to the quality of rugby talent that was being developed in the Eastern Cape.

“One of the driving forces behind the call

for a Super Rugby franchise to be based in the Eastern Cape was to create a career path for the young, talented rugby playing individuals from the region, who in the past have been forced to move elsewhere to pursue a career in rugby,” he said.

The Junior Springboks will kick off the 2016 international spectacle against Japan on Tuesday, 7 June at the Academy Stadium, before taking on Argentina on 11 June at the AJ Bell Stadium, and France on 15 June back at the Academy Stadium in the pool stages.

“It is always challenging to name a squad of only 28 players, especially if one considers the immense talent at junior level in South Africa, but we have selected the best possible team for the World Cup.”

The team played their first official warm-up match last Friday at Wits University in Johannesburg against the Xerox Golden Lions Under-19 and Under-21 teams, with an eye on sharpening up their game before the tournament.

Linda Hallberg loves her grungey makeup mode. Go for a new softer rebooted version of the 90’s make up with a palette of browns and maroons instead of dead black .The key is dark moody maroon lips and matching coffin nails with Essence Megaslicks Balm Stain in Lady and the Vamp, R53.95 and Megalast Nail Colour in Under Your Spell, R56.95, at selected Clicks. Keep skin matte and make-up minimal with deeply smudged eyes.

Gorge grunge

Here’s the easiest way ever to edge

up your look --- just tie a flannel

checked shirt around your waist!

*MUST-HAVESGRUNGE CHECKLIST:

This trend is all about attitude and comfort, worn-in, damaged, slouchy

stuff so get your look sorted.

Checks --- in any shape or form are compulsory.

Oversized checked flannel shirt --- wear it over T’s, under puffas and

always around your waist.Ripped, patched, washed-out jeans --- the scruffier the better and denim cut-offs with dark tights for the girls.

Denim overalls --- wear one strap unclasped, folding down the panel and this also works with pinnies.

Beanie mania ---- THE unisex accessory or bandanas and flat bill

caps for dudes.Chunky boots --- floral pretties for the gals and good old American

work boots for the guys.

@ Layering inspo for grunge The best thing about cold season

grunge is the practical layering like

wrapping a shirt around your waist.

It’s a great way to keep an extra layer

handy if you’re out for some fun and it

gets chilly. You can rock the look with

sweatshirts, puffas, biker jackets and

for the girls it’s equally cool to tie a

shirt around your favorite LBD, or add

a checked shirt over a floral skater skirt.

We love the “talking” beanies

and caps.Black Savage

their laid-back scruffy style of dressing soon morphed into a way of life.

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day is a project that has captured the hearts and hands of many ordinary South Africans over the past three years.

This year the whole Herbert Hurd family – pupils, parents and staff – took up the 67 Blankets challenge and, for the past month, everybody has been knitting during every spare moment.

Daily, bags of squares, knitted by moms, aunties, grannies and great-grannies, are deposited in boxes at the school office. The school staff room is a hive of knitting activity before school and at break times. Even the male staff members are contributing by donating balls of wool to encourage their colleagues. Many pupils have developed a renewed interest in handwork and have brushed up on their knitting skills, while others have learned to knit for the first time, in order to make their contribution. The squares are sewn together to make single-bed blankets, which are then distributed to needy people around the country.

So far, Herbert Hurd has collected enough squares to make 26 blankets. If everyone continues to knit at the same pace until the end of May, Herbert Hurd will be able to make a very worthwhile contribution to this wonderful project which will help to keep people warm this winter.

Music department performs at St Augustine’s 150th celebrationGrey’s music department performed at St Augustine’s Cathedral’s 150 year celebration. Director of Music Department at Grey is Shaun Lyon. Subject Head of Music is Louis Potgieter. Head of the Strings Orchestra is Mariza Taylor.

Close on 200 musicians from Collegiate Junior and High Schools took to the stage for the annual Prestige Music Concert on Thursday, 5 May. This event showcases the larger ensembles from both schools and this year’s line-up was worthy of all the praise it received.

Opening the concert, was the High School’s Rock Band, under the leadership of Mr Tim o’ Reilly. A concert-goer exclaimed… “A rock band! At a girls’ school?!! Wow!” Woman are certainly ‘doing it for themselves’ and it was wonderful to see young musicians embracing diverse musical genres.

The High School Jazz Band made South African history by being the first school band to perform the complex arrangement of Chick Corea’s Spain, with trumpet solo by Jenna Taylor. Talented matric saxophonist Josie McClure showed her skill in her solo during the band’s rendition of Mas Que Nada, another Latin-American favourite.

Bella Voce à capella group provided wonderful vocal sounds in their own

arrangement of Eden’s Superhero and Mariah Carey’s Always Be My Baby.

The Junior School Band under the baton of Mr Alan Parker was a highlight, performing a wide range of musical styles. Trumpet Soloist Emma Fourie must be commended on her performance in J Moss’s Bring Him Home.

The High School Choir, with Mrs Agenbag at the helm, accompanied by Mrs Fyvie, sang to high acclaim. A complex programme was presented, with à capella versions of Prints’ Benedicamus and Arlen’s Over the Rainbow. The crowd favourite was most definitely the spiritual, Good News, by K Burton.

The concert ended on a high with the High School Concert Band, under the baton of Mr Putigna. Voted as one of the best band performances in Collegiate’s Concert Band history, which spans over 40 years, the performers and conductor deserved the standing ovation and applause which they received.

Collegiate’s All Girls’ experienceCollegiate Girls’ High School travelled to Durban to take part in the National All Girls’ Festival. Hosted by Durban Girls’ High School, Collegiate took part in many various disciplines: hockey, netball, debating, tennis and chess.

Collegiate excelled in Durban, especially in the hockey and chess competitions. Hockey ended 3rd behind Oranje and Eunice. Chess were runners-up to Eunice.

Harriet Bisdeé achieved her 100th cap whilst on tour. Netball player Anais Coetzee received the accolade of best attacking player of the netball tournament. Reshna Dhanjee was the board 3 winner in the chess tournament.

Head of Sport, Mrs Chantell Posthumus, said, “We are really proud of our girls. They represented their school, and province incredibly well. The young hockey team is pulling together nicely, and I hope that we can maintain this momentum.”

Sportspanne kook teen Grens!

VP girls captain, Chloe Welgoemoed, and U19 captain, Anele Gwentshu, are holding the trophy, with the U16 captain from Sanctor and two of the student organisers from NMMU.
