FROM THE PASTOR, FR. ANTHONY MENDOZA

St. Pope Pius X—A Humble Man Who Lived To Renew All Things in Christ! Joseph Sarto, born the son of a poor mail carrier in Venice in 1835, did not seem destined for greatness. He became a priest at the young age of 23, but after ordination he felt gaps in his learning, so he continued to carefully study theology. As a busy parish priest, he became known for his generosity to the poor and the sick, for the great devotion with which he celebrated the liturgy, and for strongly promoting adult religious education. At the age of 49 he was named the Bishop of Mantua, in Italy. Even though he was extremely busy, he put a lot of time and energy into his seminary, even teaching classes there himself for many years. 19 years later he was elected pope, taking the name Pius X. Being a humble man, he felt very much out of place with the pomp of the papacy. “Look how they have dressed me up!” he said in tears once to a friend. Pope Pius X took as his motto “To restore all things in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10). Faced with growing secularism which was leading many people away from God, Pope Pius strongly promoted the frequent reception of Holy Communion, which was not practiced at that time. He even worked hard to permit little children to receive Holy Communion soon after they reached the age of discretion (which is normally considered to be the age of 7 years). He was also a strong promoter of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially through the daily praying of the Holy Rosary. He said, “If you want peace to reign in your homes, recite the family Rosary.” Pope Pius X strongly opposed an attitude that was called “Modernism.” This did NOT mean that he was opposed to everything modern! The error he saw in “Modernism” was the tendency to believe that truth was not absolute but relative, that what was considered true had to adapt itself to the needs of modern people. This attitude is still present in our time! The Pope saw “Modernism” as denying there were any unchangeable truths, thereby denying the eternal revelation of God to humankind. Pope Pius X issued very clear denunciations of “Modernism” in order to safeguard the faithful from those errors. During his pontificate, he faced leaders of powerful nations who demanded to have some control over the Catholic Church, sometimes offering him bribes, sometimes threatening him. He courageously resisted them, protecting the autonomy of the Church.

The Pope believed that true disciples of Jesus needed to deepen their understanding of the Sacred Scriptures. So he established in Rome the Pontifical Biblical Institute, as a center for advanced Biblical studies. That Institute continues to be highly influential today. Pope Pius X had a short papacy of 11 years, which ended at the beginning of World War I, but he did much to restore all things in Christ. He is a great example to us, that our own humble beginnings should not discourage us from letting God do great things through us! The feast day of Pope Pius X is August 21. St. Pius X, pray for us!

LIFETEEN Virtuous Reality Retreat

This LIFE TEEN Retreat, VIRTUOUS REALITY is for Graduates and Seniors ONLY and is based on the four cardinal virtues of the Catholic Church. Retreat will take place on Sunday, August 18th from 10am - 7pm.

The retreat is geared specifically to spend time in gender specific groups of young men and young women embarking on a new phase of life as newly graduates and incoming seniors. This one-day retreat is meant to instruct the young women and young men on how to live their lives as women and men of God with the help of the divine grace

that comes through living the cardinal virtues. This retreat offers separate portions of the retreat to encourage the young men and

young women an opportunity to learn about their faith and their bond as brothers in Christ and sisters in Christ.

In addition, it will serve to strengthen their commitment to living the cardinal virtues and their commitment to the Christ, His Church and to one another. At its most fundamental level, a virtue is a habitual and

firm disposition to do good. “The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God” (Saint Gregory of Nyssa). There are human virtues and theological

virtues. (CCC 1803, 1833) The human virtues are habitual and stable perfections of the intellect and will that govern our actions, order our

passions and guide our conduct according to reason and faith. They are acquired and strengthened by the repetition of morally good acts and

they are purified and elevated by divine grace. (CCC 1804, 1810, 1811,1834, 1839)

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of

our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your
