FROM THE PASTOR, FR. ANTHONY MENDOZA
Halloween, All Saints Day and All Souls Day The name Halloween is a shortened form of “All Hallows Evening,” which is an old way of saying the evening before “The Feast of All the Holy Ones,” or, as we know it, “The Feast of All Saints.” Since Halloween has to do with the saints in heaven, it is a great idea for children to have an “All Saints Party” on October 31st! This Thursday, Nov. 1st, will be the day we celebrate all the saints in heaven. This year it IS a Holy Day of Obligation, which means that all Catholics are required to attend Mass for the Feast of All Saints. Masses at St. Patrick Church will
be 7:00 am, 12:00 Noon and 7:00 pm. The obligation to attend All Saints Day Mass can also be fulfilled by attending the Vigil Mass at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 31st. The Church has recognized hundreds as saints, but there may be millions in heaven whom we will not know until we get there ourselves. By honoring the saints we honor their Creator, Who is the source of their goodness. We also ask their prayers, since they are our older brothers and sisters in Christ who love us very much, and we believe what the Bible tells us, that “The prayers of a righteous person are very powerful” (James 5:16). Let us ask the saints in heaven to pray for us to join Jesus and them in heaven one day!
Besides the saints in heaven, we have other brothers and sisters in Christ who have already died but who may not yet be in heaven. They are the ones we remember in a special way on Friday, November 2, the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed, better known as “All Souls Day.” A person who dies with unforgiven mortal sin will never enter heaven. A person who has no unforgiven sin and who is already cleansed of all selfishness before death will go straight to heaven. The rest of us must be cleansed of any selfishness after we die in a suffering which is called purgatory. Our prayers can
help the souls in purgatory with this cleansing so that they can sooner enter heaven. As the Bible tells us, it is a holy act to pray for the dead (2 Maccabees 12:42-46). So please pray for those who have died, especially during the month of November. On Friday, Nov. 2nd, the Masses at St. Patrick Church for All Souls Day will be at 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. You may br ing a picture of a loved one who has died, to place in front of the altar before Mass begins.

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members
of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and
physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing
presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make
broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special
people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking
you for all your gifts. We ask this through Lord Jesus who healed
those who believed. Amen

Saint John Paul II Many of us have come to know about Saint John Paul II because he was probably the pope for most of us for most of our lives. He is known as the “traveling pope,” as the pope who helped to bring down the Communist Wall and who promoted Christian morality and unity in his native Poland and throughout the world (Pope John Paul II and the Fall of the Berlin Wall, http://www.writespirit.net/authors/pope-john-paul-ii/pope-john-paul-fall-berlin-wall/). Through his actions he guided many people to our
Lord. The action I consider the most Christ-like is from the following biblical text: “Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, they know not what they do’” (Luke 24:34). These are the words our Lord Jesus Christ states while He is on the Cross saving us. These words resonate in the life of Saint John Paul II because he publicly forgave the man who tried to murder him. Not only did this saint forgive this man but he even guided him to Jesus, which is the calling of all the baptized: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt. 28:19-20). The pope had such a influence on this man that “In 1983, John Paul II visited his would-be assassin. They had a private conversation, and emerged as friends. The pope stayed in touch with Ağca’s family during the latter's incarceration, and in 2000 requested that he be pardoned. The request was granted. Ağca was released and deported to Turkey, where he was imprisoned for the life sentence he had fled decades prior. He converted to Christianity while incarcerated, and was finally released in 2010. In December 2014, he returned to Rome and laid two dozen white roses at the pope’s tomb” (1981-1983: Violence and Forgiveness, https://mashable.com/2015/09/30/pope-john-paul-ii-assassin/#0KO.1DJz9uqk).
Saint John Paul II understood the universal call to holiness stated in Lumen Gentium Chapter V. All are called to strive for holiness! He encouraged us to do so while he was here on this earth. He wrote many encyclicals, apostolic exhortations and apostolic letters. He presided at numerous beatification and canonization ceremonies. He strove for this holiness and through his life and through God’s grace he now shares in the heavenly banquet with the Lord and the other saints. I want to encourage us all to “do not be afraid to be saints,” by living out these words in our faith and actions.
Let us demonstrate to the world why and how we can relate to Saint John Paul II and why we too are striving to be saints, so we can join them when it is our turn to meet our Lord. May we read our bibles! May Jesus’ Word resonate in our lives like it did in the life of Saint John Paul II.
