FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR, FR. PEDRO MERCADO JR.
You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.
Many of us have heard of Saint Augustine or have even asked for his intercession. In fact, he is a saint who is very close to the Roman Catholics in the Diocese of Laredo. That is why the Church of San Agustín in Laredo was erected to be San Agustín Cathedral. Saint Augustine was born on November 13, 354 and he died on August 28, 430. He was canonized a saint and in 1298 he was recognized as a Doctor of the Church (one who made a huge contribution in our faith) by Pope Boniface VIII. To the surprise of many, Saint Augustine was a sinner like all of us. With his lifelong conversion he is an example that “every saint has a past, every sinner has a future.” From a life of hedonistic sins and paganism he became one of greatest saints, seeking and guiding others to conversion and to Jesus Christ. Saint Augustine was raised by his Christian mother Monica, but he was not baptized as an infant and he did not practice the faith. Augustine became a Manichean as an adult. A Manichean believes is a dualistic religious system. They have Gnostic and pagan elements inserted into their faith. He even had a paramour for several years and was the father of one son (while not being married in the Church). However, through God’s grace and the constant prayers of his mother, we read “Not all saints start out saintly. Sometimes they have to go a little wild before they settle down to God’s work. Augustine’s mother worried that he lived a reckless life, and she prayed continuously that he would become a Christian. It took a long time, but finally her prayers were answered” (“Augustine of Hippo,” RCL Benzinger, 2017, http://saintsresource.com/augustine-of-hippo). Another factor for his conversion is the following story: it is said that one day he heard the voice of a child saying “tolle, lege,” which translates into “Take, read.” Augustine opened the Bible and randomly read Romans 13:13-14, “Let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” This touched his heart. He finally understood the void which he had been searching for through sin was God. God is the only Being who could fill any voids he had; therefore, Augustine’s famous words: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” He was baptized into the Christian faith and after the death of his son (who was also baptized on the same day as Augustine) he became a priest and defended the faith and helped the Church with concepts such as Original Sin and Predestination. He defended the faith until his death (Jimmy Akin, “Saint Augustine: 10 Things to Know and Share,” National Catholic Register, 2004, 1).
Saint Augustine’s feast day is on Wednesday August 28, 2019. He is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, sore eyes, and aside from our diocese, of different cities, dioceses, and parishes. His mother, Monica, is also a saint, whose feast day is on Tuesday, August 27, 2019. She also holds a special place in our hearts, because she did not hesitate nor did she give up hope that her prayers for the conversion of her son would be answered one day. If you have a child who has left the faith or has serious doubts, please ask the intercessions of both of these saints. We will be celebrating Saint Augustine’s feast day at San Agustín Cathedral at 12:05 p.m., and at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church at 7 a.m. and at 6 p.m. on Wednesday August 28.

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of
our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical
suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your
mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole and
free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and
deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this
through Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen
