THE announcement that Nelson MandelaBay’s water restrictions and punitive tariffswere to be eased, was met with great jubilationamongst businesses and residents.

The news followed last week after a droughtthat left everyone in the metro in a frenziedpanic state.

However, the executive mayor of the NelsonMandela Bay Municipality, Zanoxolo Wayile, has lifted the water restrictions imposed on ac-count holders since water supply decreasedbelow 60 % two years ago.

At a certain stage in 2010 levels in the city

threatened to drop below 30 % because con-sumption remained high in the midst of thedrought.

Furthermore, Wayile said while the watertariffs will be lifted on August 1 the decreasedwater usage restrictions will be put into effectMonday, July 25.

A notice last week from the Department ofWater Affairs advising the municipality thatrestrictions on its intake from the major sup-ply dams had been revised, saw to it that therestrictions, are for now a thing of the past.

Although the restrictions have been lifted, the municipality is still urging residents tocontinue to use water sparingly given a pro-jected “dry season”.

Provincial Water Affairs acting chief direc-tor Ashley Starkey, confirmed earlier that thelifting of the restrictions was recently pub-lished in the weekly government Gazette afterthe Minister of Water and Environmental Af-fairs, Edna Molewa, signed it.

Hereafter, the metro could only announcethe tariff ease after the Gazette was published.

Moreover, the municipality advised thatcertain activities remain prohibited and isstill encouraging the usage of recycled waterat car washes.

Meanwhile, the municipality has main-tained a 98 % water quality compliance whichmeans it complies fully with SANS 241 (Drink-ing Water Quality Standards).

BenMazwi opensRe/Max branch in

MotherwellRE/MAX ABM, which operates inthe New Brighton and surround-ing areas of Port Elizabeth, hasachieved record sales and openeda new office in Motherwell duringthe past month.

RE/MAX ABM increased its salesfrom between 10 and 20 per month to31 sales recorded for May and a fur-ther 26 for June.

Well-known local businessmanand broker/owner of RE/MAX ABM,Andile Ben-Mazwi, attributes thisgrowth to an increased marketingbudget and more aggressive market-ing of the brand and its stock.

Adrian Goslett, CEO of RE/MAXof Southern Africa, says that thesefigures prove that there is demandfor property and that the market isshowing strong signs of recovery, particularly in the lower and middleprice ranges.

Ben-Mazwi explains that the newMotherwell office, which began trad-

ing on 1 July, was established due tothe fact that they sellmorepropertiesin this area than any other area oftheir operation.

“People in this area prefer person-al consultation when doing businessand therefore bringing our businesscloser to them will enable us to in-crease our market share.”

Ben-Mazwi says that his officebrings 23 years worth of knowledgeand expertise in property to the area, which has been passed on to the RE/MAX ABM sales associates throughtraining, to render an unsurpassedservice to meet the client’s needs.

Goslett adds that in the currenteconomic climate, well-trained,knowledgeable and compliant agentsmake all the difference when itcomes to concluding property trans-actions.

Ben-Mazwi explains that in orderto service the Motherwell area, hisoffice has taken on a further sixagents and on 9 July the office hosted

a road show in the area to introducethe new agents to the communitywith fliers. “We also talked to thecommunity about our initiative withthe objective of making it easy forthem to transact at their door steps.”

Ben-Mazwi also notes that Mother-well is the most vibrant area in theirtarget markets and says that RE/MAX ABM has more listings in thisarea than anywhere else.

Free-standing homes, he says, arethe most popular choice, with pricesranging from R70 000 to R550 000.“Most of the properties on the mar-ket sell for an average price ofR200 000 and the buyers are mostlyyoung couples.”

Looking forward, Ben-Mazwi pre-dicts steady growth for property inthese markets. “The sales in the areaare being matched by the number oflistings which we conclude at almostthe same rate we conclude sales. Thisassures us of sustainable growth inthe area,” he concludes.

Sibongile wins SAAwardSELBY MADIKANE

MOTHERWELL Build It ownerSibongile Nkebe won the Future100 South Africa’s Top Young En-trepreneur Silver Award at afunction held at the Gallagher Es-tate in Jozi recently.

The function according to Nke-be, was the brainchild of the Na-tional Youth Development Agen-cy (NYDA) to ensure efficient run-ning of businesses by youngpeople. Nkebe revealed that theareas of concern among other is-sues, were business profiling onfinancials, community involve-ment and achievements.

According to Nkebe, 5 800young entrepreneurs country-wide were nominated and thatnumber was later trimmed downto 200 by the independent adjudi-

cators.“Everything was conducted

professionally in a free and fairmanner by the independent panelof judges and when my name wascalled for a Silver Award, amongst 100 young best entrepre-neurs I was overwhelmed,” said astill overjoyed Nkebe.

Nkebe attributed his achieve-ment to his personnel, the com-munity that supports them “andof course my family for they al-ways support me” he said.

Said Nkebe: “I want to saythank you to all of you. thank you. This award means a lot to me,” hesaid.

Nkebe is not new to winningawards. In 2009 he won the BuildIt national award and was award-ed the certificate of communityinvolvement and development byImbasa primary school in 2010.

NELSON Mandela Bay Municipal-ity, like the rest of the interna-tional community, celebratedMandela Day on 18th July ingrand style.

Paying homage to a great man,Mandela, the icon of freedom, peaceand social justice, Mandela Bay may-or Zanoxolo Wayile urged all munici-

pal directorates, state departments, the private sector, other social part-ners and residents to make every daya Mandela Day in recognition ofMandela’s 67 years of selfless dedica-tion and commitment to the strugglefor liberation and democracy.

As a municipality named afterMandela, Wayile said the Bay has al-ways celebrated his birthday as partof its annual programmes.

The entire month of July was de-clared as Mandela Month in Nelson

Mandela Bay.The Nelson Mandela Bay Munici-

pality launched an outreach pro-gramme that was aimed at making adifference in the lives of the less for-tunate members.

They served about 1000 scrump-tous meals to the needy from their of-fices inAggreyStreet,NewBrighton.

“Our events company is happy tobe serving the needy a hot meal onthis important day. We’d like to con-

tinue with this community service, even if it’s on a monthly basis as ourcommitment to the needy membersof our communities in the spirit ofMadiba,” said company director Vu-vu Sitho-Headbush.

THE Department of Arts and Culture(DAC) spearheaded a month-longprogramme to celebrate MandelaDay by giving out books to encouragethe culture of reading in the country.Since the United Nations declaredJuly 18 as the International MandelaDay last year, South Africans andmembers of the international com-munity have been urged to use at

least 67 minutes of their time to helpothers in need - whereever they are.The theme of this year’s MandelaDay was “Working Together to builda caring society.”“Mandela dedicated 67 years of hislife to political activism and MandelaDay is a celebration of Mandela’s lifeand a global call for people every-where to take responsibility for mak-ing the world a better place,” saidDAC Communications Head, LisaCombrinck ,recently.

Combrink said her department wasinvolved in a series of events to cele-brate Mandela’ legacy. They started early this month in Gra-hamstown in the Makana Local Mu-nicipality where they handed outthousands of books - about 67 titlesto seven under-resourced libaries -with the help of companies in thepublishing sector to promote literacyand encourage the culture of read-ing.This was because Mandela, who is

the author of two of the titles theyhanded out - Long Walk to Freedom(1994) and Conversations with My-self (2010), is very passionate aboutreading.Mandela was once quoted as saying“Education is the great engine of per-sonal development. It is through edu-cation that the daughter of a peasantcan become a doctor, that the son ofa mine-worker can become the headof the mine, that a child of farmworkers can become the president of

a great nation.”DAC Books and Publishing headSiphiwo Mahala said it was hightime that South Africans shouldmake everyday a Mandela Day.People should look around them toseewhat it is that they cando tomakethe difference in the life of the otherperson.“We (DAC) also took time to paint, clean and beautify the homes of eld-erly people in the areas we visited na-tionally,” said Mahala.

Spar NMMU netballerscrack national nod

IN an unprecedented move, halfof the Nelson Mandela Metropoli-tan University’s netball teamhave been named in the South Af-rican student squad.

The six Spar-NMMU playerswere selected on the basis of theirindividual performances at theUniversity Sport South Africa(USSA) tournament, which tookplace at North-West University’sPotchefstroom campus earlierthis month. The team placedfourth overall.

“It’s obviously a very big hon-our and a first for the university,”said NMMU sports manager,Theresa le Roux. According toher, they caught the eye of the se-lectors with strong performancesthroughout the week.

Captain and wing defence, Ja-nine Daniell; goal keeper, NontleGwavu; centre, Mampho Tsotetsiand goal shooter, DumisaneChauke, all former members ofthe national squad, once againcracked the nod. They are joinedby new inclusions Zanele Vimbe-la and Elzaan Lotter in goal de-fence and goal attack respective-ly.

“We’re very pleased to see ris-ing stars like Zanele and Elzaanbeing recognised for their talentand dedication,” said Le Roux.

Members of the 30-strong na-tional squad will vie for a place inthe 12-person team to compete atthe World University NetballChampionships, which take placein Cape Town in July next year.

“It will give the girls great in-ternational exposure and the op-portunity to see some of theworld’s best student netball play-ers in action, many of whom rep-resented their countries at theelite World Cup in Singapore re-cently,” said Le Roux.

“Unfortunately, Nontle andMampho will not be eligible asthey turn 27 before the worldchamps.”

However, said Le Roux, theywould still be in contention for aspot at the Federation of AfricanUniversity Sports (FASU) Gamesin Botswana next April. She at-tributed the club’s success to hardwork under the guidance offormer national player and headcoach Lana Krige.

“Lana and Maryka (Allaway)put in many long hours coachingthe girls. They were certainly thefittest team we’ve ever taken tothe tournament.”

Five of the six players are alsomembers of the Eastern Provinceteam, the Ibhayi Gales, whichcompetes in the national NetballGrandSeries,whileGwavurepre-sents her home province of Gau-teng.

They will all play a critical rolewhen the Spar-NMMU teammounts its title defence in the EPA League at the Young Parkcourts in Port Elizabeth startinglater this month.

The team will be aiming to con-tinue its dominance with a sev-enth consecutive series win.
