Student of the Month of December

Liam Carey Class of 2017 nominated by Ms. Rudolph

Liam is a quiet and positive presence in my block one class. I taught Liam as a sophomore and I’ve witnessed him grow into a poised and very intelli-gent and thoughtful young man with much to offer. I will miss him when he leaves my senior English class this year.

Bridget Cincotta Class of 2017 nominated by Mr. Greb

Every time I do a lesson plan, I think of two things: what does the class need to be able to do at the end of the day and how can I enrich the class so that Bridget is challenged. Truthfully, the latter is a challenging task. Bridget shows up each day and demands that I have answers to what I would consider quite thoughtful questions. She works harder than most students, yet has natural abilities which would, should she choose to do so, enable her to work less and still do well. Bridget makes teaching chemistry a joy rather than a job.

Michael Moses Class of 2017 nominated by Mr. Frantz

Michael is a wonderful student. Anytime I need an answer, I know I can count on Mike to answer. Mike is a student that is always in class and would be an asset to any college. In addition, Mike is a well-rounded stu-dent. He knows a lot about news stories, and by knowing these stories, he can relate them to ideas or themes being discussed in English class. He volunteers on a regular basis in class. Mike should be given the HHS student of the Month because he would “wear it well”.

Page 4

Student of the Month of December

Kyle Johnson Class of 2018 nominated by Kate Cesarini

Kyle has made significant progress both academically and behaviorally since 9th grade. He is extremely motivated, earning honor roll the last two years and this year maintaining straight “A’s during quarter one. Faculty and staff that know Kyle are extremely proud of the positive changes he has been consistently showing the last two years, especially this year!

Cole Wellington Class of 2018 nominated by Ms. McCarty

Cole has emerged as a leader in my accounting class. He makes daily contributions and connections between our accounting principles to his job at C & M Sporting Goods. Cole always has a story about his role as inven-tory controller and cashier that relates to what we talk about in accounting for small businesses. He makes my lessons so much more relevant and meaningful because of his experience as a diligent worker. In addition to this, Cole is a leader on our Wrestling team, truly a sport that demands dis-cipline of the mind and the body.

Julia Wolffe Class of 2018 nominated by Ms. McCarty

Julia has emerged as a leader in my Entrepreneurship class. Her voice is modest, yet strong, and all of her peers are drawn to her. Julia’s sincere in-terest and outstanding creativity in developing a business plan for her dream of opening a fashion boutique one day is truly moving. Julia’s goal (which I know she will accomplish) of majoring in Fashion Merchandising in college one day and applying that degree to her hope to open her own shop is so inspiring. Julia has showed great maturity by already research-ing colleges that have this very specific major and are ranked nationally. She will begin her research this summer by visiting the campuses and stud-ying which is the best fit for her!

Page 5

Student of the Month of December

Ian Curley Class of 2019 nominated by Jonathan Howe

Ian has made great efforts to build community in our homeroom, 2019U. Since September he has helped draw our homeroom closer as a commu-nity. He is quick to smile and greet people in homeroom. Ian continues to deepen the connections in homeroom with his kindness and positivity.

Christine Daly Class of 2019 nominated by Ms. Stadnicki

Christine is an extremely hard worker. Christine will persevere through tasks when most people would give up. When things get hard, Christine works harder and it is paying off for her! Keep it up Christine!

Christina Lee Class of 2019 nominated by Mr. Vettori

I have noticed a big improvement in Christina’s work ethic and motivation in English 10 during the 2nd quarter. She is constantly working to im-prove her writing and overall literacy skills, and she continues to turn in high quality work. Her ability to make connections to the outside world is commendable, and it shows a high degree of engagement with current events and the world around her.

Allison Garber Class of 2020 nominated by Ms. Federico

Allison Garber & Serena Lamberto are an amazing team! They are hard-working, creative, helpful, and motivated students. For The Fault in Our Stars literature project, Allison and Serena decided to “take action” by buying, donating, and delivering toys to CHOP. They also created a video to inspire classmates to find a way to give back to the community.

Honora Melton Class of 2017 nominated by Ms. Grady

So kind, thoughtful, curious, creative, talented

Tim Shannon Class of 2017 nominated by Ms. Rudolph

Tim comes to each class ready to play. He is willing and has a desire to with whatever I have planned for that day. He comes with a spirit of enthusiasm and willingness to wrestle with the books we discuss. He raises the bar for every student in that class. It was a pleasure to teach him.

Connor Behrle Class of 2018 nominated by Mr. Decima

Connor has pushed himself in World Cultures to engage in challenging conversations. Connor’s leadership skills push classmates to achieve at a higher level. His maturity is evident by the relationships he has formed with staff and students, and by this work ethic both in and out of school. Connor is an employee at several locations and helps to operate his own business.

Page 8

Student of the Month of January

Connor Behrle Class of 2018 nominated by Principal

Conner is a new student to Haverford High School. He is a wonderful addition to the Haverford High School community. Conner has excelled in the classroom and in his employment. His active participation in both the classroom and at work make him a worthy candidate.

FBLA Week! Monday, Feb 6 - Each One, Reach One Day Students talked to peers and community members about their FBLA-PBL experiences. And, of course, encouraged them to join! Tuesday, Feb 7 - Member Appreciation Day To thank you members for all that they do, we held a Member Apprecia-tion Pizza Party after school. We had pizza, snacks, drinks and cookies and reflected back on events of their year so far. Wednesday, Feb 8 - Teacher Appreciation Day We couldn't forget to take time to appreciate our teachers too! This year, members brought in a variety of dessert dishes and placed them in the teacher work room for faculty and staff to enjoy! Thursday, Feb 9 - Pay it Forward Day One of the cornerstones of FBLA is service, so what better way to show our FBLA pride than to offer something to those in need! Our officer team chose the Ardmore Food Pantry as our focus, and members brought in a variety of boxed breakfast items to help reduce hunger in our community. Friday, Feb 10 - Spirit Day We rounded out the week by wearing our Haverford FBLA t-shirts to school to show our club spirit!

Haverford High School’s

11th Annual WING BOWL

On Friday, February 3th, students and teachers continued a Haverford Best Buddies tradition, packing the school auditorium to watch their peers compete in a chicken wing-eating contest. Now in its 11th year the Haverford Wing bowl, a scaled down version of the famed Philadelphia Wing Bowl, acts as one of the largest fundraisers for Haverford Best Buddies. Throughout the month of January, students and teachers raised money to earn a spot on the stage for the event. Each participant, or ¨winger¨, created and decorated a fundrais-ing bucket, complete with creative nicknames and catchphrases. This year, ¨Brionce¨, ¨The Wing-Sling Slasher¨, and ¨The Wing King¨ were all examples of competitors’ creativity. Just before the event, the anticipation in the school was palpable. Each competitor had ten minutes to eat as many wings as possible. After both a student and teacher round, the winners of each round competed in a 3 minute speed final. This year the top competi-tors were Senior Josh Cunningham and Haverford Librarian Mr. MacConnell. Josh Cunningham won this year’s Best Buddies Wing Bowl, eating 7 wings in the final round. In second place was Mr. MacConnell, eating 4 wings in the final round. In total, Josh ate 29 wings and Mr. MacConnell ate 33.

Ms.DiFrancesco’s Classroom is collecting caps for disabled juveniles who are in

need of wheelchairs. No amount is to small, just send in with your student any

caps collected. Please bring caps to Room 131 she is collecting them till April.

Thanks for your support.

Page 14

The DCIU program at Haverford High School worked very hard at collecting plastic caps throughout the high school, families, community members and various DCIU lo-cations. The reason for this service project was to collect enough caps to be recycled and then have the money sent to “CAPS of LOVE.” This non-profit organization col-lects the money from recycled caps to purchase wheelchairs both manual and motor-ized for children in need. Caps of Love is based in Florida. Mrs. Brewer, a Math teacher in the district’s Special Educational Department presented the concept to the IU students and they were very excited about taking on the adventure. On December 20, 2017 two students from the DCIU Life Skills Program along with staff took the col-lected caps to Davita Dialysis and presented over 200 pounds of caps to Mrs. Robin Springer who will complete the recycling process and send the check to Florida. With the success of this program, the students have decided to extend the collection until April 2017. Thank you to all who have collected and donated caps to this worthy cause.

The Concert Chorale began with Salmo 150 by Brazilian composer, Ernani Aguiar, the Chamber Singers gave their interpretation of Eric Whitacre’s I Hide Myself and then the two choirs combined to offer a set-ting of Locus iste by English contemporary composer Karl Jenkins and Wade in the Water by Moses Hogan, featuring nine soloists and improvis-ers. A Message from Haverford’s HEART TEAM

(Students Assistance Program )

DID YOU KNOW???

Gateway drugs are drugs that are often the first substances abused among adolescents. The data from the PA Youth Survey showed that marijuana is the second most frequently used gateway drug in Delaware County, with 44.5% of 12

th

grade students surveyed reporting regular use. (The most frequently used gateway drug was alcohol.) Despite the push for legalization of medical marijuana and recreational marijuana, the risks for adolescents include: Legal issues. Even arrests prior to age 18 remain a part of a teen’s record for the rest of their life, and can be considered by the courts if they have a subsequent arrest.

Impaired brain development and lowered IQ. Regular users show an IQ drop of eight points on average. Increased risk of anxiety, depression, and personality changes known as “a motiva-tional syndrome”. This syndrome is characterized by diminished ability to carry out long-term plans, a sense of apathy, decreased attention to appearance and behav-ior, and diminished ability to concentrate over long periods of time. These changes can lead to poor performance in school and other activities. The PA Youth Survey also showed that 49.7% of the Delaware County 12

th graders

surveyed thought it was “not at all wrong” or “only a little bit wrong” to use marijuana. If you don’t want your child to use marijuana, talk to them and make sure they know how you feel. Parents can make a big difference.
