Student of the Month of February

Please congratulate the following students who have been

recognized by their teachers as Students of the Month for

February 2017.

Marcus DiPrimio Class of 2017 nominated by Ms. Meyer

Marcus is always willing to help a fellow classmate when asked/or needed. He has a strong work ethic and a pleasant demeanor.

Michael Moses Class of 2017 nominated by Ms. Dzielak

Michael goes out of his way to help his classmates whenever they need extra help. He always has a smile on his face and is well liked by both his teachers and classmates. I have no doubt that he will accomplish any-thing he sets his mind to upon graduation. Haverford High School is a better place for having Michael Moses as a student.

Rafaela Garza De La Vega Class of 2018 nominated by

Ms. Malligan

Rafaela came into my class as a HUGE asset. Not only is she super sweet in assisting her classmates, she has been able to translate for me. I have two strictly Spanish speaking students and she has used her lan-guage skills to help me communicate with students. She also serves as a leader in the class by providing meaningful contributions to class discus-sions.

Rafaela Garza De La Vega Class of 2018 nominated by

Ms. Vindler

Rafaela has been very welcoming and helpful to two new ESL students.

Student of the Month of February

Patrick Kelly Class of 2018 nominated by Ms. Montgomery

Patrick kills it every day in English. He is fully engaged, which shows not only in his written work, but also in his high level of participation. He makes thoughtful, intelligent commentary and is always trying to see our texts through a variety of lenses and perspectives.

John Bullock Class of 2019 nominated by Mr. Corsi

John always has a positive attitude and goes out of his way to help students with their CNC Manufacturing and Practical Wood projects. John will help others before he does his own work. He is very knowledgeable in many areas of technology and has a thirst for learning.

Maria Garza De La Vega Class of 2019 nominated by

Ms. Vindler

Maria has been welcoming and very helpful to two new ESL students.

Erik McCallion Class of 2019 nominated by Mr. Decina

Erik comes prepared and works hard every day in World Cultures to challenge himself and his group mates. Erik recently created an excellent argumentative paper on the world’s largest problem. Erik is currently a member of the track and lacrosse team where he represents his teams and Haverford High School well both on and off the field.

Perry Richardson Class of 2019 nominated by Ms. DiFrances-

co

He is just amazing.

Student of the Month of February

Marissa Gillespie Class of 2020 nominated by Mr. Jeffers

Marissa has started off the semester doing really well in IPS. She comes to class with a positive attitude every day and is highly engaged in the dai-ly lessons. I have also witnessed her working cooperatively and constructively with her peers on many occasions.

Samantha Snarr Class of 2020 nominated by Mr. Jeffers

Samantha performed extremely well in IPS class. She finished the course with an A+ (98%). She consistently participated in class discussions and set a great example on how to remain focused on the task of learning the course content and not simply trying to do the minimum amount of work to say that she was “finished”.

Haverford Student Attending Summer Residency Program at

LaSalle University

Silvino Alexander, a Junior Accounting student, has been awarded the honor of rep-resenting Haverford this summer at LaSalle Uni-versity in The Accounting Career Awareness Pro-gram, sponsored by NABA, The National Associa-tion of Black Accountants . This is a career devel-opment program for minority high school students who have expressed interest in pursuing a career within accounting and finance.

During this week-long summer campus residency program, taking place during the last week of June, a select group of students have the oppor-tunity to explore careers in accounting and busi-ness via a rigorous class and study schedule, col-lege-level content and valuable networking oppor-tunities. ACAP introduces minority high school stu-dents to accounting, finance, economics, technolo-gy and management while providing the founda-tion of financial literacy and the development of in-terpersonal skills. Prominent business leaders share their knowledge, provide tips for success and discuss edu-cational opportunities. Students experience accounting first-hand through tours of local certified public accounting firms and companies in the private sector. The program concludes with a recognition luncheon for students, parents, speakers, and corpo-rate partners.

ACAP is a unique pipeline from high school to college that allows students to become prepared and informed about the expectations of college life. The program is fully supervised and all-expenses-paid. Students selected for ACAP will receive free tuition, room and board, books, materials, tours and mentoring.

In order to have been considered for this program, students need-ed to submit an application, a current copy of their academic tran-script, two teacher letters of recommendation and have a face-to-face interview held at PWC accounting firm downtown. There were only 24 spots for this program. Silvino competed for this very coveted spot against other students in the Philadelphia region and was selected. Congratulations Silvino! National Business Honor Society trip to

University of Pennsylvania

On Thursday, March 2, 2017, 37 members of the NBHS, along with Business Teachers Mrs. Mini, Mr. Perez and Mrs. McCarty, spent the day at the University of Pennsylvania, then toured our beautiful city of Philadelphia. The day began with an hour seminar with the Admissions Officers of the Wharton School of Business. They talked about the Admissions process and all of the factors that go into the acceptance process. University of Penn prides themselves on having a human element to Admissions, which means that each can-didate is interviewed by a Penn Alumni to discuss what they can contribute to Penn and what experiences have shaped them into the person they are today. We learned that Penn’s founder, Benjamin Franklin, believed that “the great aim and end of all learning is service to society”. This really resonated with our students. We discussed the opportunities that prepare Penn students to become a new kind of leader with the ability and inclination to channel knowledge into positive change. We discussed that college students must em-brace a practical approach to education that dates back to Penn’s founder. The great Ben-jamin Franklin believed that by connecting studies to actual problems, students are able develop the skills, experiences, and inclination to thrive in a world that needs innovative leadership. We then took a 2-hour, open-air bus tour of the city. Our tour guide focused on the rich his-tory of Philadelphia’s business traditions, the architecture and design of our city’s skyline, and other fun facts about the city as our tour began in University City, took us to Center City, Old City, the Art Museum District, then ended back in University City. It was a great day to celebrate education, our city, and our students!

Good Government Seminar

Twenty Haverford High students recently participated in the annual "Good Government Seminar" held at Cabrini College and hosted by our State Senator, Daylin Leach. The Senator greeted the students during his opening remarks and ex-plained the complex process of enacting a proposed bill into law. Follow-ing this presentation, students were assigned to various committees where they discussed one of four specific bills that are currently under consideration by our state legislature. The issues the students considered involved altering Pennsylvania's elec-toral college process, placing environmental regulations on plastic grocery bags, eliminating the death penalty and enacting bail reform. Following the committee sessions, the student participants - there were over 100 from area schools - engaged in a simulated state Senate ses-sion, moderated by an experienced state legislator. Finally, after vigorous debate and voting on each of the four bills, students were provided a delicious lunch by the college. It was a remarkable and memorable experience for all involved.

WORLD LANGUAGE BREAKFAST

March 9, 2017

During the first week of March every year, World Language Week is celebrated in classrooms around the country. Here at Haverford, we celebrate in various ways. Students delighted in cultural displays created by their world language teachers, stated the pledge in English and then in a language taught here, many culturally savvy students answered a daily trivia question and earned a prize for their superior knowledge. And of course we ended our celebrations with the World Language Breakfast. The breakfast was held on Thursday, March 9 and approximately 450 tasted various foods which represented what is studied in French, Italian, Latin and Spanish clas-ses. This year students were also treated to music and learned some Puerto Rican dancing from a Philadelphia group called Los Bomberos de la Calle. Many students reported that a fun time and delicious food were enjoyed by all. Thanks to all the language club students who helped with serving and decorating. Grazie, Gratias tibi ago, Merci, Gracias!

Best Buddies at St. Patrick’s day Parade

On Sunday March 12th, Haverford Best Buddies participated in the 2017 Phila-

delphia Saint Patrick's Day Parade. Almost 60 members of Best Buddies marched

down the streets of Philadelphia, walking from 16th and Market to Penn's Landing.

Several administrators and faculty from Haverford joined Best Buddies at the event,

including Superintendent Dr. Reusche and Principal Donaghy. This was Haverford’s

fourteenth year in the parade. It has become an annual tradition for students to par-

ticipate - often weathering frigid temperatures and fierce wind. Members often cite

the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade as one of their favorite activities with the organization.

Best Buddies hopes to continue this event for many years to come.

Represents a clear and consistent set of values

Are well written in terms of organization, grammar, spelling and word usage

community)

Overall Quality of Application (Maximum 5 points)

On a scale of 1-5 rate the overall quality of this applicant’s package, with 5 being the highest quali-

fining criteria of the HTEA Education Scholarship: Leadership, citizenship, service, and probable

success in post-secondary education. This section is an opportunity to evaluate the degree to

World Affairs Update from Mr. Caviglia

On March 13, a group of World Affairs Club students went for the second time this year to Temple University to participate in the Global Economic Forum, sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia. This all-day event challenged students to work in simulation on resolutions to address timely issues involving the environment, nuclear arms, and a host of other issues reflecting present-day diplomatic problems of the world. Those who took part were Emma Davies Jacob Kaufhold Elvi Sopiqoti Julia Davies Harmehak Kaur Pryce Davies Elliot Miciek A contingent of students in the club will, for the second year in a row, take part in the Model Arab League conference at Georgetown University in Washington April 21-22. This year’s team will represent Saudi Arabia. The event involves students working in simulation on a host of councils concerned with diverse social and political issues facing the Arab world in pursuance of resolutions on common goals. It is sponsored by the National Council on U.S. Arab Relations. Those participating in the trip are Julia Davies Peter Martin Elizabeth Hay Elliot Miciek Dana Kaufhold June Park Jacob Kaufhold Elvi Sopiqoti Harmehak Kaur Isabel Weir Some thoughts from me as a moderator: The club has continually become more active in significant and challenging events offering opportunities to Haverford students to work cooperatively and bolster their understandings of social, political, and economic issues facing both the United States and the world community. They are very bright, well-humored, and mature group of dynamic learners and the school is lucky to have their talents.

AP Art Show

This year’s opening reception for the annual, student run AP Art Show themed “Pop Culture” took place in the Haverford High School library on Saturday, March 18th. The exhibition featured the work of 13 students from 10th-12th grade working in a variety of art mediums including paint-ing, drawing, printmaking, photography and digital work. Each student had a section of the show featuring his or her own creative body of artwork from the past year and a written artist statement about their work. In addi-tion, there was a section of works based on the “Pop Culture” theme, and a community arts exhibit displaying designs each student made for electri-cal boxes around Havertown, which will be installed later this Spring. The successful event brought in nearly 400 guests who enjoyed live music and great food in addition to the artwork, and $1,400 was raised for the ani-mals at Providence Animal Center in Media, PA.

A Message from Haverford’s HEART TEAM

(Students Assistance Program )

DID YOU KNOW???

In the most recent the Pennsylvania Youth Survey, 34.7% of the students surveyed in Delaware County reported having gambled for money or any-thing else in their lifetime. The increased amount of sports betting surrounding college basketball in March makes this a good time to have a conversation about problem gambling with your children. You may be surprised to learn that if your child gambles they are: 3 times more likely to drink alcohol 4 times more likely to smoke cigarettes 2 times more likely to use illegal drugs 3 times more likely to be involved in a gang fight 4 times more likely to get in trouble with the police

Problem gambling is a hidden addiction. It’s important to talk about it with your children.
