OVERVIEW

Since 1884, The Haverford School, an all-boys, pre-k-12 independent school on Philadelphia’s Main Line, has been a leader in helping boys grow in academics, the arts, athletics, and moral character. A rigorous liberal arts curriculum and the School’s “best for boys” approach to teaching and learning empowers students to both master knowledge and lead lives of compassion and empathy. Integral to a Haverford School education are extensive programs in leadership, service learning, global studies, health and wellness, and community life. Guided by a faculty highly attuned to the academic and social needs of boys, The Haverford School has prepared generations of boys for admission to top colleges and universities and successful lives beyond.

With the highest re-enrollment among area independent schools, families choose The Haverford School year after year to bring out the best in its students. Faculty and staff teach to the unique needs and strengths of boys, helping them realize their full human potential — socially, morally, and intellectually. At Haverford, students receive a strong academic foundation, make lifelong friends, and learn to serve their wider community.

The Haverford School seeks a dynamic leader as its next Head of School starting July 1, 2021 or 2022. SCHOOL HISTORY

The Haverford School was founded in 1884 by Haverford College at the request of Alexander and Lois Cassatt, the latter being the niece of U.S. President James Buchanan. The School was originally named The Haverford College Grammar School and was designed to educate the children of Haverford College faculty. In 1903, the School became independent and changed its name to The Haverford School and focused on the education of boys. The School was Quaker during its affiliation with Haverford College, but has been nonsectarian since becoming independent.

Over the years, The Haverford School would grow with the surrounding community — developing a reputation for excellence in academics, arts, and athletics, while evolving with the times into one of the nation’s top boys’ schools. Today, the School continues to strive to be a premier school for boys based on the ideals of academic and moral excellence of its founders.

THE SCHOOL

The Haverford difference is evident in the School’s extraordinary educators who know how to teach and reach boys at all stages of development. It is exhibited in the remarkable students’ commitment to explore the “why,” to examine themselves and their world, and to look out for one another. It is carried in the nearly 5,000 alumni who are making a difference as government ambassadors and Broadway actors, financial analysts and international aid workers, symphony conductors and tech entrepreneurs.

Every decision at The Haverford School is made with best practices for boys’ education in mind. This best-for-boys program taps into the decades of research and the School’s own knowledge and experience on how young men learn. Haverford teachers are experts in educating and mentoring. They

recognize their students’ innate competitiveness, their boundless energy, their need to learn with their hands, their sense of humor, and their sense of fairness. They understand that boys thrive under a relational teaching method and they go the extra mile to get to know each student well.

The School believes in attracting and nurturing a diverse and inclusive student body, and it serves students representing more than 90 zip codes. Diversity, equity, and belonging have become increasingly central components of the School’s overall identity and philosophical orientation. The pre-kindergarten-12 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program empowers the community with stress reduction strategies, spaces for practicing the navigation of difference and sameness, and the freedom to make mistakes. It includes direct training for faculty, staff, and parents; school-based student leadership development; and ongoing practice with regional and national partners.

The School’s “2020-2025 Strategic Plan: Lifelong Learning and Leading” ensures that Haverford will continue to evolve its program to deliver an excellent 21st-century education — with a heightened focus on intellectual curiosity, collaboration, resiliency, creativity, and a dedication to lifelong learning. While honoring the traditional liberal arts education, The Haverford School also endeavors to help boys apply these skills through project-based learning and a design-thinking process. All this work is supported by added attention to character and leadership development.

The Haverford School also offers coeducational partnerships and programs with two nearby girls schools, the Agnes Irwin School and The Baldwin School. The Haverford School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS), and the International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC).

ACADEMICS

The rigorous liberal arts program is the foundation of a Haverford School education. In order to prepare boys for life, the faculty understands that the students need to master a body of knowledge in a variety of disciplines and develop a set of skills that allows them to be productive citizens in the world. From pre-kindergarten through grade 12, the academic program provides a strong foundation for future learning and a skill set that will enable students to navigate in and contribute to their world.

The pre-K through fifth grade program develops capable, independent students. Education in the critical early years is grounded in the science of learning and employs evidence based practices in the classrooms. The Lower School program focuses on developing boys with solid foundations in reading, writing, math, social-emotional, and fine/gross motor skills. Students leave the Lower School with not only the academic and social emotional foundations needed to succeed in Middle School and beyond, but also with a well-rounded knowledge base in science and the arts; an understanding of their relationship to and role within their community, our country, and the world; and how to use their critical thinking skills and understanding of the design thinking process to be leaders, contributors, and innovators.

The Middle School academic program focuses on helping students grow in critical thinking, creativity, and strength — both physically and emotionally. Teachers understand the needs of adolescent boys and focus on developing strong relationships to engage them in learning. The liberal arts curriculum includes studies in English, mathematics, American and world history, science, Spanish, Latin, 2D and 3D art, multi-media, theater, music, and health and physical education. In the spring, eighth grade students choose an elective such as marketing, finance, leadership, philosophy, Chinese, or programming. Middle School students are encouraged to take risks and make mistakes in a safe, supportive, and caring environment as they are prepared for high school.

In Upper School, the curriculum focuses on the wide range of skills, both academic and social, that are necessary for success in a rigorous college program. Core study in six major disciplines — English, mathematics, modern and classical languages, science, history, and the arts — is complemented by elective offerings such as engineering, electronics, economics, software programming, the modern Middle East, modern Black lives, music production and recording, molecular biology, environmental ethics, and more. The Upper School also offers an impressive Global Studies program.

Seventy-eight of the graduates over the past five years have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. In addition, many graduates have been awarded merit scholarships at colleges and universities.

THE ARTS

The Haverford School boasts a rich artistic heritage, approaching the arts as an integral part of each boy’s education. The visual arts are integrated into each division, with several specialized electives available to Upper School students looking to develop their talents and explore their creativity. Students work with skilled faculty, all of whom are themselves practicing

professional artists. Courses include drawing, painting, design, photography, digital arts and website design, video and animation, ceramics, and woodworking. Beyond academic pursuits, there are several extra-curricular opportunities in the visual arts available to students including the Art Club, Film Club, Pegasus (the award-winning arts and literary magazine), and the Stop-Motion Club.

The music program is well-known for its extraordinary faculty and for attracting and supporting talented students nationally. Providing a wealth of experiences in active music making from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, the program offers opportunities to perform in orchestras, choirs, and select vocal and instrumental ensembles. They sing, dance, play percussion instruments, study guitar, and use equipment on the cutting edge of music technology to orchestrate, arrange and compose music. The choral ensembles have sung at Carnegie Hall, the Academy of Music, and on tour throughout Europe.

In Haverford’s theater program, boys receive hands-on experience in every facet of theater. In addition to learning acting technique, boys study a variety of skills, from lighting design to stage combat. Starting with introduction to theater courses, the curriculum culminates in an advanced class in which boys have the opportunity to write, direct, cast, and produce their very own play. Theater courses are offered in the Middle and Upper School, with three mainstage productions every year.

The Haverford School counts many professional performing and visual artists among its alumni.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS

The Haverford School is highly committed to physical health and wellness throughout the pre-k-12 program. In physical education, exercise is fun. Both general fitness and hand-eye coordination are emphasized, and the goal is to engage students by keeping each class lively and fresh. The physical education program is designed to provide a diversified curriculum that positively affects each student’s

self-image and confidence. Students are given the opportunity to reach their full athletic potential in an environment committed to good sportsmanship, promoting positive communication, instilling a strong work ethic, and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle while fostering a love for sport and physical fitness.

The competitive sports program is particularly strong, with many student-athletes going on to play at the college level. Haverford School teams, taking part in the Inter-Academic League (Inter-Ac), often win league championships in multiple sports. The School has been a member of Inter-Ac since 1887. Varsity teams include crew, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, water polo, basketball, ice hockey, squash, swimming and diving, winter track, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, and track and field. In 2018-19, seven teams captured Inter-Ac titles, out of a possible 14 championships. Tennis captured its tenth straight Inter-Ac Championship, while golf, soccer, water polo, basketball, squash, and track and field also earned titles.

A favorite athletic tradition, EA Day (or Haverford Day from the Episcopal Academy perspective) is a tradition of sportsmanship and competition that traces its history back to 1887. Alumni, parents, and students gather to cheer on their respective school’s team. For Haverford students, it marks a day of competition against a longstanding archrival and the close of the fall sports season. Since 1980, the school whose teams win the day retains the coveted split-sweater, composed of half of a Haverford School sweater and half of an Episcopal Academy sweater neatly sewn together.

STUDENT LIFE

Students are encouraged to follow their passions and invest time in the community in myriad ways. Throughout the community-life programming, the School focuses on instilling the values and virtues that position students to connect across lines of difference; to show respect, honesty, and courage

in the decisions that they make; and to engage in experiences and pursuits that will help shape their perceptions and behavior.

Outside of classes and athletics, students engage in regular service learning and partake in more than 50 student-run clubs and activities, ranging from astronomy to Model UN, from the Gay-Straight Alliance to Robotics, from the Math Club to the Poetry Club. The Upper School Robotics Team ranked third in the world at the VEX World Championships in 2019.

The Student Global Leadership Institute helps students explore leadership development — characterized by creativity, a capacity for problem solving, collaboration, communication, and multicultural perspectives. Students engage in team-developed service projects, addressing worldwide issues related to the environment, economics, and globalization.

CAMPUS

The School enjoys an impressive tree-lined campus located a short walk from Haverford College and situated on Philadelphia’s Main Line, 10 miles from downtown Philadelphia. All three divisions — Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School — are located on the same campus, and all have been steadily updated over the years to serve the needs of students and faculty. As a result, the architecture is an attractive mix of traditional and modern.

Of particular note is the new Middle School building, which opened in fall 2020. This state-of-the-art, 30,000-plus-square-foot Middle School is purpose-built for the developmental needs of the adolescent boy. The $18-million modern structure includes 18 advanced classrooms, a Learning Commons, a dynamic maker space, robotics and STEM areas, communal gathering places, and designated floors for each grade level.

The campus also includes a treelined quad and amphitheater that serves as a valuable outdoor learning space.
