Club News

Dear Members,it has been almost 12 months since the last annual General meeting. The General Committee; the Games Control board and its thirteen sports section Committees; the sub- Committees for Finance, F&b, rules & membership, establishment, social, marcom and Property and the management have worked together during this period to attempt and provide to satisfy members’ needs and to improve the Club in terms of our finance, brand equity and operations. We may not have satisfied all members in all areas of our operations, but i am reasonably pleased that a fair level of success was achieved.

i would like to thank all members for your support of the Club’s activities, promotions and tournaments in 2012. my heartfelt appreciation to my fellow colleagues on the General Committee for your passion, time, effort and hard work in serving the membership. monthly subcommittee meetings, General Committee meetings and with other duty calls, i am proud to see the dedication of the current General Committee and would like to encourage more members to volunteer their services for the benefit of the Club.

The Club’s success is very much dependent on its leadership and people. as such, i hope that the incoming General Committee will continue to focus on improving our finances and continuing the Club’s tradition and positioning the Club as the premier sports and social Club in the region.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM)The aGm has been scheduled for tuesday, 23 april 2013. i would like to take this opportunity to remind all members of rule 27 and rule 58(d) of our Club rules :

Do mark the date of 23 april 2013 (tuesday) at 6.30pm in your diary as the aGm is a very important meeting and a forum for the election of office bearers (General Committee) for the Club. i would like to encourage and urge you to come and support the Club by casting your vote and hopefully participate in the election process. NEW RECIPROCAL ARRANGEMENTWe are pleased to inform you about the Club’s new reciprocal arrangement with Hollyburn Country Club in Canada (refer to contact details under Club news). SCC 19TH INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY 6Sour 19th sCC international Hockey 6s tournament is back again and happening over the weekend of 2-3 march. Following the resounding success of an enlarged tournament in 2012, the 2013 event will also have 36 teams in the men’s competition and 24 teams in the ladies competition. i will strongly recommend all members to come down and join in the fun. Congratulations to the tournament Committee on their hard work and making the tournament a success and thank you sponsors for your continuous support.

Practical Feng shui tips for modern livingWednesday, 30 January 2013

axe on everestThursday, 17 January 2013Due to overwhelming response from his talk that was held last year, the Club invited sCC member, Grant “axe” rawlinson back for those who missed it the first time. With over 50 members and guests that evening, they were treated to delectable canapés and a welcome drink. axe shared with us his emotional and physical journey up the treacherous mount everest. after the talk, the Club invited axe to present an sCC flag to sCC members, Joanna tan and Joanna kumar who will be climbing mount kinabalu. The talk was truly an inspiration to all, many thanks to axe.

in conjunction with the lunar new Year of the snake, we organized a Feng shui talk that provided practical insights into what 2013 has in store for each Chinese Zodiac sign. The speaker, ms adelina Pang shared tips on how to prepare one’s home to bring in good fortune and to avoid “unfavorable energy”. ms adelina Pang is one of singapore’s foremost Feng shui consultants and has clientele that include prominent entrepreneurs, celebrities and members of royalty. she is also a Committee board member of the international Feng shui association.

A Glimpse inside the 1884 ClubhouseArticle by: Steve Thompson

t he third Singapore Cricket Club pavilion was built in 1884 and extended ("rebuilt" according to a commemorative stone in the ceiling of the Padang Restaurant) in 1906. In fact, this 1884 building was incorporated into the centre of

today's pavilion, still with its wrought-iron pillars and railings along the main verandah.

Nothing is known of the interior of the third pavilion, but contemporary architectural plans with the National Archives hint tantalisingly. They are dated 1895, when apparently some alterations were made to the building. We reproduce two of the plans here, with a rare photograph for comparison.

The "back elevation" shows what is now the front entrance to the Club, facing Empress Place. In both the plan and the photo, the entrances (with semicircular skylights above), the large central window and the twin staircases to the upper floor can be clearly seen.

The ground floor plan shows the layout. Through either door, one

enters a central room, pretty much where the Main Lounge is now, featuring a horseshoe bar. A passage leads to the verandah, with locker rooms on either side (one for members and the other for visitors, no doubt).

The smaller rooms on either side were harder to decipher but were eventually identified as dressing rooms, bathrooms and lavatories.

In those days, the ground floor of the Clubhouse was "men only", with ladies restricted to the upper floor. Associate membership was extended to ladies in 1938 and full membership only in 1996.

The 1884 Clubhouse was already too small and one member complained: "The SCC closes every afternoon at 7pm and has no attraction except the playing fields and the bar."

The local press went further: "The SCC is the biggest and busiest bar in Asia between the hours of 5 and 7pm. Its prices are low and the average quality of its drinks is awful."

Have no privileges at the bar.

GLORY DAYSThe Top Right Hand Corner of the

Men’s Bar (TRHCMB) was a group of senior Club members who used to

gather in the Men’s Bar from the 1970s until the bar was moved to the basement as part of the 2006 Clubhouse renovation.

The TRHCMB included such luminaries as former Club president Len Foster and former vice president Ralph King. Ironically, the TRHCMB “rules” do not include the most notorious of all ________ that banning wives and children, an accidental infraction of which might cost the unfortunate member a round of

drinks for the entire bar. This copy of the rules was donated by Club member

John Bones.

These rules were intended to be humorous and should not be taken literally. The most senior member of the TRHCMB present (if of sound mind) is the arbitrator of all disputes. His word is final.

on the 23 February 2013, 16 club teams from south-east asia and Hong kong participated in the inaugural sCC netball international 7s at the singapore Cricket Club.

160 players competed in the largest international club netball tournament in singapore. Held in a “rugby sevens” format, teams enjoyed a full day of netball with pool games played at the co-curricular activities branch (CCab) at evans road, and the finals at the sCC.

sCC’s own Hawks team breezed to the top of their pool to advance to the Cup competition, where they convincingly defeated their singapore rivals, bedok storm 15-2 in the quarterfinal, but were overcome by valley tigers (Hk) who went on to win the tournament.

The day saw some great sportsmanship and skill on the court, and we congratulate liv Flanagan (bedok Thunder) the Player of the tournament, and ellie stanley (valley tigers) the sportswoman of the tournament.

sCC netball would like to officially thank our sponsors. Without their generous support, the tournament would not have been able to run to the high standards that it did. With a stunning fashion show organised by Willow & Huxley and amazing gifts provided for the individual winners. a mixologist at the after-party who made delicious cocktails, kindly arranged by The retrospective. Goody bags provided and refreshments distributed court-side by sir move and generous gifts donated by mumm Champagne, Pantry magic and Coca-Cola, overall the entire event was one to remember!

THE INAUGURAL SCC NETBALL INTERNATIONAL 7s22-23 FEBRUARY 2013

We are also grateful to Peter “stitch” Hutton who provided the scoring software to ensure our tournament ran smoothly and on schedule. You can find all of the results at www.macoocoo.com

an event like this cannot run without the support of many people. a very big thank you to physiotherapist Joy Walter; the sports Dept, especially Wenling Choong and Janet ng; kairi metsaots (marcom); and finally Chovin ong and her events Dept. thank you also to all the sCC members, who contributed to scoring, time-keeping, acting as mC for the event and generally showing their support.

Thank you to all of the teams for your participation, and enthusiasm, both on court and on the dance floor. as with all sporting events, what makes them great is both the play and the after party, and with our very own flash mob we achieved that!Ph

The 2nd sCC Premier tennis tournament took place over 3 days from the 11th -13th of January.

We welcomed tennis legends mansour bahrami, Henri leconte, ilie nastase , Paul Haarhuis, Jacco eltingh and our own honoury member vijay amritraj

The start of the event involved the dinner on the Friday. This was an amazing evening to kick off the tournament; one hundred and twenty diners packed into the Padang restaurant. vijay proved to be an excellent mC and the stories that were mentioned throughout the evening were compelling and hilarious. each story surpassed the last in its boldness and blueness! Highlights of the evening included the interviews (nastase’s was on another planet!) and the auction with mansour bahrami and nastase both going for in excess of sGD 5,000 for the Pro am event. The evening ended with stumps closing at 3am so all in all a very good dinner!

The next morning the coaching clinics took place and it was great to see the courts full with juniors initially followed by the adults. The Dutch duo of Haarhuis and eltingh proved to be fantastic value all weekend and their coaching skills and accessibility a pleasure to see.

The Pro am followed with our stars looking a little worse for wear but hats off to them; particularly leconte who immediately drank a beer upon arrival. He obviously needed his fluid levels topping up… The Pro am event was over two days and we had a worthy winner in Heidi; who shared the trophy with her amazingly supportive fan club! There was a great clip on Channel news asia of a very happy winner with her partner mansour bahrami!

The exhibition doubles and bbQ by the courts on the saturday evening suffered to a rain delay; but the stars did get the game in late @9pm. all who watched were highly entertained and the stars after the match hung around for a few sherbets and further stories.

The sunday saw the coaching clinics and the Pro am conclude and the final exhibition doubles wrap up the event (with the expected 30 minute rain delay). again a fantastic display for the spectators and shot making of an ingenious measure was seen by all.

The Ptt certainly proved to be an amazing weekend and i would like to thank all the sponsors and the people involved in assisting with this event including ms Joy Walter from Physio to sports who volunteered her services during the weekend. in the last year the tennis section has raised its profile within the club with the appointment of Coaching Development and a full time tennis coach. The tournament itself capping off a challenging but successful year. The event received media publicity from tv, radio and print and the club certainly benefitted from the circus that surrounds these types of stars.

on a personal note, i would like to thank the tournament Committee, particular kevin, (Coaching Developments) and tracy – You are both stars too! and of course the sCC, the General Committee and all the club staff involved – special note to stefanie, great job!

inspired by the stars, catch our very own Club teams in action on home courts in the singapore tennis association interclub singles league on every saturday afternoon and sunday morning from 9 march to 14 april 2013.

SQUASH SECTION BY MANMINDAR SINGH

our winning juniors with President Col Gurcharan singh, ladies Captain andrea nicholas and social secretary mahes vellupillai

the squash section started its junior programme sometime in the early 2000s as we sought to ensure a steady pipeline of players representing the club. The programme has been by all accounts a resounding success. our Jsms have contributed

significantly to the steady stream of successes in the annual squash league as well as in individual championships. many of our juniors have over the years been drafted into the national junior and senior sides, representing singapore in numerous international events. our Jsms are a key cornerstone of the squash section’s reputation as being one of the strongest squash clubs in the region.

Here we choose to briefly highlight 4 of our juniors who have done us proud. vivian rhamanan is the current assistant

national coach and has won every local junior age-group and mens open title. kenneth Chan, who has had similar success, is currently studying in Yale university in the us where he has led his college team to repeated national successes. both have represented singapore on numerous occasions at the junior and senior levels. over the years, they have helped established our Premier Grade team as the strongest in singapore. likewise, mao shihui has been equally successful on the local squash scene. she is currently studying in Yale university where she is a key member of the highly-ranked team. Her younger sister, shiyuan, who is set to join her at Yale in the coming academic year, has been dominant in the junior scene for some time and is now beggining to feature at the senior level. both have represented singapore on numerous occasions.

it was indeed a great honour for us to host the Penang sports Club during their visit to singapore.

Penang sports Club were here in singapore to participate in their regular “straits settlement” games which was hosted by singapore swimming Club this year. the snooker section took this opportunity to visit us and we hosted them to an interport Game.

singapore Cricket Club with our usual warmth sent 3 cars to pick up our visitors when they arrive in Changi. after a great dinner, we settle down to serious snooker Competition.

11TH ANNUAL TRIANGULAR/ INTERPORT MATCHES, BANGKOK, 6 – 10 DEC 2012 “one night in bangkok makes a hard man humblenot much between despair and ecstasyone night in bangkok and the tough guys tumble…”

“one night in bangkok” was a popular song from the early 1980s – with its rude juxtaposition of bangkok and its nightlife with the game of chess. it was subsequently banned in Thailand as its lyrics showed disrespect for buddhism.

The mixed group of 26 odd shaped sCC bowlers, who made their way to bangkok in December for the annual games hosted by the royal bangkok sports Club (rbsC) experienced both despair and ecstasy on the bowling green. no doubt also, some “tough” members may have been humbled and tumbled by the nightlife…..

sCC’ finest was victorious in the triangular with the kowloon bowling Green Club (kbGC). but in both interport and triangular, we lost to the rbsC by total aggregate points. The final match on sunday between rbsC and kbGC was the deciding factor and the score was rbsC(16 pts) sCC (14 pts) and kbGC (6 pts) - probably the closest margin achieved in recent years.

our hosts were as always hospitable and took pains to make our visit memorable. at the final reception, our younger members Hui kai, ming lee and shermeen did us proud with their rendition on stage during the karaoke sessions. ron Pereira and raymond also gamely followed.

it has been six months since the section was formed. it is a good time to assess the state of the section’s health and progress.

soon after the section was formed the section Committee, led by Convenor Howard Haythornthwaite had decided to priorities what is really important for the growth of the section. it was decided then that we need more members to sustain the section and that the non-playing members need to be given lessons in bridge.

in a very short time of six months the section has managed to raise its membership numbers to 53.

as for the bridge lessons, trainer Carl Parker conducted module a in september, which was followed by module b in December last year, with an excellent response. the present batch of beginners is ready to be integrated into the regular bridge players.

there has been a tremendous interest among the sCC members to learn the game of bridge. the Committee has taken note of this and will keep the Club members informed of beginners bridge lessons in the future. also, intermediate lessons are going to be organised soon.

the bridge section celebrated the indian new Year with a Dazzling Diwali night at the Gilmour room. the members enjoyed an evening with good food, drinks, games and loads of prizes but most of all a good game of Duplicate bridge and fellowship.

bridge section members are happiest when they are left to play Duplicate bridge with an occasional glass of wine to lift their spirits. We meet regularly at the oval and on some days at the Gilmour room.

the task ahead is challenging and the bridge section Committee is aware of and prepared for it. For now it is very much on track and chugging along full speed ahead.

all said and done the bridge section is doing well with a promise of doing even better. We have accomplished much with the help and support of our club and section members and look forward to their continued support. Happy bridging!

CRICKET SEASON 2013: HERE WE GO…!Scribe: Push sharma Convenor: trevor Larbey

Here’s wishing all the members of sCC - Gong Xi Fa Cai !

after a rather long hiatus due to Christmas and new Year celebrations, the cricket section has become active once again. There are plenty of exciting initiatives being planned for the year as we enter sCCs 161st year of birthday celebrations.

before the sCa cricket league officially begins on the 9th of march, an 18 member squad headed to melbourne in January to play a series of matches against the mCC. These tourists represented a unique blend of players from every team across divisions 1, 2 & 3 of the sCC. The highlight of the melbourne tour was a ‘once in a lifetime’ chance to play at the famous mCG (melbourne Cricket Ground), which is the largest stadium for playing cricket in the world.

This also marked the first tour for the sCC Cricket section for 2013 season and the tourists are eagerly looking forward to it. The tour is being lead by the very experienced Chris “Dollop” rogers who is the tour manager and the able sCC lions Captain robert Hands who was is the tour Captain.

in the words of the tour manager, “it was a great opportunity for new tourists and older hands to mix and get to know other players from within the Club with whom they do not necessarily come into contact in singapore; but most of all a chance to meet and build friendships with our melbourne based opposition, many of whom we already have a great connection. in essence, this was what touring is all about and touring is at the heart of the sCC Cricket section.” We played at the albert Park, Wesley College and Geelong grammar grounds, but it was always going to be the aura of the mCG which was the highlight.

The melbourne cricket club put on great hospitality throughout the tour, with the mCG game although culminating in a rain interrupted match, was never the less a fantastic prelude to the dinner in the mCG long room attended by some 140 guests and 5 ex test cricketers from the melbourne Cricket Club. The president Paul sheehan presented the sCC with a fabulous original painting of the mCG of old.

The match itself saw the mCC accumulate 288 for 7, with the sCC’s Christopher Janik (on loan to the mCC) out there at the end of their innings, and featuring again with the ball taking a wicket alongside fellow ex sCC section Player of 2011 ben mcleod also doing some damage to his old team. nevertheless andrew Goldsmith opening the innings for the sCC provided some fireworks with a rapid 44 off 26 balls to get the run chase moving, supported by andre De lange with 45 not out. alas the melbourne weather won in the end darkening the skies at 5 pm and prematurely ending the match with the sCC on 4-132.

2013 will see the sCC cricket section venture out of their home turf after the 160th year invitational matches played on the Padang. February for kowloon Cricket Club, march for the royal bangkok sC and mid year for the inaugural uk tour which will see matches against both the mCC and also at Windsor castle during July. august will see the Padang resplendent for the first aCC emerging nations tournament, in which singapore will be hosting u/23 teams from india, Pakistan, bangladesh and sri lanka plus the national teams from afghanistan, uae, nepal and singapore in a two week 50 over tournament. We are hoping

to see india and Pakistan fight it out on the Padang in august.

The Commonwealth Cup 2013 will commence over the weekend of February 16 - 17 and march 2 - 3 including the two finals on 3rd of march with each team playing two matches each weekend. all the matches will be played at sCC Dempsey grounds. team managers will be responsible for selection of teams based on availability and that are in keeping with the selection rules on age qualification and place of birth, nationality or citizenship.

The ‘magnificent Four’ teams are as follows:1.Europe and Africa:team name “Hedgehogs”- manager rufus Frere-smith2.Indian Sub-Continent: Defending Champions team name “Desi boys” - manager sukanti sen 3.Malay Peninsula:team name “roti Pratas” - manager suresh Prabu4.Oceania:team name “Jellyfish” - manager mike mehaffy

Thus, with determination, sportsmanship and cohesive team spirit let us welcome the cricket season and make this another memorable year for us as well as for sCC. Good luck to you all.

after a 3 month break due to holidays and weather only suitable for Ducks, the Golf section headed out to laguna for their annual CnY lo Hei Golf tournament. obviously there are quite a few fair weather golfers in the section who passed on this year’s event expecting the worse, which did rear its ugly head for a welcome 2 hour drinks and festive card games interval, but that’s all part of the fun with the hard core section members. Considering the recent weather, laguna was in superb condition, with the greens running true, the sand flying fluffy and the water making sensational splashes, well in our group that’s pretty much what happened. We had 3 divisions on the day, which later grew to 4 and the newly named, “so Far away Division”, which went to one of our latest new members, mike Dorris, who playing off 8, scored 10 points, which was half as many as the next lowest score in any of the other divisions. Division a) was a tight affair between 4 players until we all teed-off, there after it was a one horse race, with allan “i can’t remember the last time i played” muir, hitting the dizzy heights of 40 points playing off 7. after some probing by his playing partners, it later transcribed that he had in fact played twice last week, but i suppose at his age, it’s easy to forget what happened 7 days ago. ray lee was 2nd with 33 points and Daniel morby 3rd with 32 points. Division b) 8 players battled it out on the paddock for this converted prize, which was a much tighter affair. in 3rd place was Gerald mah with 34 points, 2nd with 36 points was vincent Ho, and just pipping him with 38 points, came Denny “my Hdcp never changes” siow, even though he does seem to play very consistent winning golf. must be his ability to keep it together after the long drinks breaks. Division C) Was another one horse race, with robin “you will be cut next time” Chua, racking up 40 points, 5 clear of Pang kim Hin and Jurgen martiens, who both scored 35 points.

now there were supposed to be a couple of nearest the pin’s and longest drives, but it would appear that someone forgot to tell laguna we would be needing flags for these, so that didn’t happen, which meant that we had a few more lucky draw smiths Fish & Chip’s vouchers to hand out, thank you Frenchy. our other sponsors we need to say thank you to, were katherine teo of kento, moet Hennessy Diageo singapore Pte ltd, and Coca restaurant. Thank you very much indeed. a special mention should also go to lim khoon, for not disappointing us with this year’s Chinese new Year hair colour. apparently its traditional for lk to turn up with a different blue rinse every year, so as to keep us all guessing as to how old he really is. teenagers today, i ask you. That’s all for this month, here’s to swinging with you all soon, and remember to check your mail boxes on a regular basis for up and coming games we have planned this year.

The new Year and a new season of hockey to look forward to!2012 finished with a ‘bang-kok’, as the men’s and women’s teams enjoyed a weekend of hockey and hilarities.

our Conveynor mathavan Devadas gives recaps of the weekend for those who missed it (or can’t quite remember it!)…

Planning for bangkok began as early as september 2012, with competition rife for the coveted tour slots!

after all the dust had settled a party of 14 men and 11 ladies boarded the flight but not before some light refreshment at Changi…..followed by more light refreshment on sQ978…….We checked into the le Fenix and it was straight to the elephant bar…..for most…….till early morning saturday for some….

later in the morning it was time to head for the ground and there were some difficulties as the royal bangkok sports Club has two venues!!! Finally we found the Polo Club and the men started off with a game against satit Chula which they won easily 2-0. The ladies next played Chulalongkorn and won 1-0. The men next played srC and lost 0-1. The ladies beat rtaF 1-0 and were in the semi-finals!!! The men beat rbsC and were in the quarter-finals. The men clearly entertained the masses with the morph suit as well as their playing skills!

saturday night was a team dinner at Chilli Corner, and what a party! ben rogers suddenly mixed it up with the junior boys and girls reliving his days as a junior. Following dinner it was off to watch some rugby followed by an evening of understanding the pub culture of bangkok.

sunday morning was difficult at breakfast…….but both teams made it for their games. The ladies lost their semi-final. The men won their quarter-final but lost the semi-final to Penang sports Club on a shoot-out. The ladies had to play a third and fourth play-off which also went to a shoot-out with the same person taking all the strokes!! They won, but received no third place trophy. The men did not have to play a third place play-off but received a trophy. always entertaining, bangkok!!

Following the matches it was time to relax by the pool before zipping off to the airport for the last flight out and back to rainy singapore!! till next year!

now we’re through some tough pre-season training thanks to kanan and Christian’s bootcamp, numbers have risen steadily so the stage is set for some top level hockey and some equally intense socialising. speaking of which, the international Hockey 6s are just days away….more fun is on the way!

2013 – STARTING AS WE MEAN TO GO ON.Scribe: rachael bell Convenor: amber williams

For the netball section, we have kicked off the new year, with new teams, the third sCC netball friendly league and a new era for sCC netball as we gear up for the first ever sCC netball 7’s tournament. This will be the first time that the sCC has hosted an international netball tournament which will be held at CCab and the sCC on 22-23rd February 2013. at the time of writing this, we have 14 confirmed teams from singapore, Hong kong, bali, Thailand and Jakarta confirmed. it promises to be a great weekend of netball, socializing and a great opportunity to raise the profile of sCC netball section and hopefully recruit some more players to our club. We look forward to updating you on how it goes in the next edition of the Padang magazine.

We closed a busy netball filled 2012 in late December with our netball Christmas party and awards ceremony – congratulations to all the winners, especially Gemma who scooped the award for most improved player in 2012 – well deserved! and a particular congratulations and mention to kerry and Jody who won ‘best dressed’ of the evening with their superb Christmas tree outfits…pure genius!

not busy enough with organizing the international tournament, January saw the start of the 3rd annual sCC netball friendly league with many teams competing in 2 divisions for the winners cup. 2 weeks in so far and both the Hawks & eagles have won both their matches, despite changes in the teams this year, both teams have gelled well together and we have high hopes for both teams. We look forward to welcoming all the teams in the league to our end of tournament party on 10th may and will keep you posted on how the teams progress.

once again we are having to say good bye to a few members of the section who will be sorely missed – 2 of our Jsm’s Jini & sonia are both heading to australia for new challenges and we hope they come back to see us again soon. We also say a few temporary farewells to a few key players who are taking a break for a few months to take on the challenges of motherhood and we wish them all well and expect to see them back on the court

later in the year – good luck to all of you – we will miss you! it is will big sadness though that we are saying good bye to lizzie aka miss Phillips who is moving back to the uk in march. lizzie has been a huge part of the section & active member of the committee for the last 3 years – she has been instrumental in shaping the direction of the section, raising its awareness and organising some awesome social events. We will miss her greatly on & off the court – she’s always smiling, friendly to everyone & generally just the nicest person we know. We wish her & Phil much happiness & luck with their up-coming wedding & move back to the uk – netball just won’t be the same without her.

netball is a great way to maintain and improve fitness levels, have fun and meet new people – we are actively recruiting new players and members to the section, so if you have any friends or family who you think would like to join us – then please do put them in touch with us by emailing us at [email protected].

Happy netballing!

MID SEASON REPORTScribe: david Griffiths Convenor: terence noe

THE CLUB IS POSITIONED WELL FOR SOME SILVERWARE (INFORMATION INCLUDING GAMES UP TO AND INCLUDING THE 26TH JANUARY)The 1st Xv sit top of the singapore Premiership with just one defeat in six games, a close 25-19 loss to Wanderers. other results have been impressive, with resounding victories over bedok kings (39-0) and (47-15) and the sCC tankards (29-5) and (38-3) and a win against Wanderers (17-15). With just two matches to go, they are in a great position to win their fifth Premiership league title in a row, a quite remarkable achievement, especially when some season-ending injuries to murray Wylie, matty Head and John Judges have affected the balance of the squad.

The tankards meanwhile have suffered a little through "second season" syndrome, the passion and the element of surprise they showed last season has been hampered by the loss of key players Chris Harkins, Javin singh and oli rey, all of whom have been impressive for the 1st Xv. a closely fought 30-18 defeat to last years Grand Final Winners bucks last time out has given the tankards fresh impetus and they will be hoping to end the season with a flourish.

The Cougars meanwhile under the guidance of Jon leow and the skinny kid have had a much improved season so far, being the first team in the Championship to qualify for the play-offs with a spate of good performances and victories against saints, bedok kings 2s, bucks srC 2s and 3s, and blacks before relaxing somewhat and losing to oldham in their final league ladder match. if they can overcome either a strong Wanderers 2 side or oldham in the play-off round, they will reach the Championship Grand Final.

The lions in the Conference have been hot and cold all year, losing a few games by a couple of points when they really should have won, and they sit firmly in mid-table. However, the return of Graeme Coach burnett to the leadership team has made a significant difference and they will be aiming for a repeat of last year's 3rd place finish.

The veterans of the sCC Growlers remain in contention for both the Conference league title and Grand final though there are some tough games ahead. Their forward pack have dominated most of the opposition but it has been the backs that have been scoring tries for fun, with the half back pairing of Jeremy "the baron" Hebblethwaite and Dave Griffiths orchestrating some resounding victories and ian Douglas, matt mcmanus and nick Francis amongst the regular try scorers. With two 50+ point wins in recent weeks, the Growlers are hitting their straps at just the right time for a crack at the title.

SCC SOCCER SCENE SCC TIGERS WIN ESPZEN LEAGUE sCC tigers wrapped up the league title in esPZen's sunday league on tuesday, 23 January, with a 1-0 victory over misfits. This is the third time sCC tigers have won the league in recent years and marks a recent rebound in fortunes for sCC's second Xi. Coupled with the First team doing very well in the Cosmopolitan league and the sCC strollers leading the equatorial Football league, this is terrific news. sCC Firsts have really set the stage for all our competitive teams over the years, and sCC tigers are trying hard to emulate their success. The tiger's winning record speaks for itself: 12 wins and 1 draw in 13 games so far this season, crowns the tigers Champions with a full 3 games to play. Plaudits to the entire squad for a magnificent achievement. Player of The season has been our goalkeeper ronnie 'The rock' smollet. With 7 clean sheets in 13 games, he has helped tremendously with the success of the sCC tigers. Well done ronnie. Congratulations to all on the Championship and for bringing more glory to the sCC. We are off to bangkok along with sCC Firsts, sCC nFl, and sCC strollers to participate in the bangkok sevens. Good luck to all the teams. SCC NFL - BY CHRIS PERREIRAbefore i provide an update to you all on the sCC nFl team during the 2012 season, i would like to once again recognize Dirk Paulsen for his tremendous sponsorship and support over the years. Dirk, your section salutes you. our plans for the 2012 season were dealt a blow early on with the departure of a few key players who were instrumental to the success of the nFl team over the last few years. nonetheless, preparations for the season continued with the focus now on

giving the younger players more opportunity to establish themselves as first team players. We progressed well and had a decent pre-season that saw us start training earlier in the year and also play more friendly games. in February, the nFl team won the Cup in the open category at the bangkok 7's defeating the sCC First team in the finals. With this success the boys were motivated and fired up for the season. We played a few more friendly games and the team began to gel well together. We finished the nFl

Division 1 tournament in 2nd place and i have every reason to believe we will win it this year and i am determined to do so. in the Fa Cup, the team did very well to reach the semi-Finals in which we trashed tiong bahru 4-1 with just 12 players who could make the weekday game. in the Final, we played siglap who basically parked the bus after we scored an own goal. some outstanding saves from their keeper as well as goalposts that seemed to move whenever the ball was going in meant we never managed to score, and siglap went on to face balestier, the winner of the s league side in the main finals at Jalan besar. the boys are now preparing for the new season. Pre-season friendly games have kicked off and we are looking forward to defending our title in bangkok. i would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support of the nFl team throughout the whole of last year 2012. our target this year is to bring the Champions trophy back to sCC and your continued support and guidance will be key to helping us achieve this goal.

see you on the field!

STANDOUT PERFORMANCE BY OUR JUNIORS AT THE MASONRY SINGAPORE CLOSED 2013 one of the main events on the annual squash calendar is the singapore Closed Championships which were held from 12th to 19th January. The event includes the open and age group categories.

The performance of our players was really something to be proud of. in the marque mens open event, all 4 semi-finalists were from sCC. bryan koh, the no 2 seed, was matched against anders Yeo, the no 3 seed, in the first semifinals. both went toe to toe in some really outstanding squash with bryan finally edging it in the 5th set. in the other semifinals, vivian rhamanan was just too good on the occasion for his much younger opponent tim leong, winning in straight sets.

The final was set up to be a real classic with 2 on-form players and it didn’t disappoint. bryan drew first blood in a close first game. vivian responded in the 2nd with some incredible retrieving off some great shot-making by bryan. but bryan, playing with a great deal of confidence throughout the tournament, came back strongly in the 3rd. vivian made sure the match went to the wire as he closed out the 4th set. The deciding 5th set was anybody’s game. brilliant shot-making, incredible retrieving and fast-paced rallies saw both players go neck and neck. it all came down to 2 winners from the racket of vivian with the score tied at 10-all in the 5th. a cross-court nick and a tight forehand drive brought to an end one of the best matches seen in recent times. barring injuries, this rivalry is likely to be renewed in the upcoming tournaments later in the year.

other notable performances for the men included John betts winning the mens open plate event. He overcame another one of our juniors liang Jun Yuan in a close final. in the mens veterans plate final, sarat Chandran lost a close contest.

The main age-group event, the boys under-19 saw another sCC player emerge champion. tim leong, who had already showed what a great potential he has by coming in 3rd in the mens open

event, put on a mature performance as he overcame his more established opponent, Pang ka Hoe. seeded 2nd, tim played a steady game forcing the errors from the racket of the no 1 seed.

tim won the first 2 games, dropping a close one in the 3rd before dominating the 4th to close out the win. We can expect tim to continue his winning ways as this win will undoubtedly give him a lot of confidence for the rest of the year. We had further success in the boys under-17 event with Chua man Chin emerging champion. The manner of his win was all the more encouraging as he went through the entire tournament without dropping a single game. We look forward to more such performances from man Chin in the coming months. We rounded off the boy’s events with a second place for lee ming an in the under-15 event. ming an came through a tough 5-setter in the semifinals, however, the finals proved one step too far.

as for our ladies, 2 of our juniors alethea sim and sherilyn Yang, reached the semifinals of the Womens open event. unfortunately, it was as far as they went in the tournament with sherilyn winning their 3rd place match. alethea didn’t spurn her other chance at glory in the Girls under-17 event. she put up a gritty performance to come from 2 sets to 1 down to win a hard fought final to emerge champion. in the same event, 2 of our other juniors, Chong Yin Jean and Clara tan came in 3rd and 4th respectively.

other notable performances among our ladies included Chong Yin Jean winning the Womens open plate final against another of our juniors nikki Pang. nicole teo meanwhile won the Girls under-17 plate final.

all in all a great performance particularly by our juniors. We look forward to our players continuing to do us proud in the upcoming events later in the year!
