The Knights of PythiasAlamogordo Chapter Circa 1899 - 1980

Almost from the inception of the town ofAlamogordo, The Knights of Pythias played apivotal role in the molding of what the communitywas to become. The following is a short history ofwho the “Pythians” were.

The Knights of Pythias built its lessons andrituals largely on the story of the friendship ofDamon and Pythias, who were historical charactersliving about four hundred years before thebeginning of the Christian era. They were members of a school, founded by Pythagoras, who wasknown as the father of Greekphilosophy.

Damon had opposed thepretensions of the king ofSyracuse, who had gained thethrone by fraud, and as a result hewas condemned to death. Pythiasbecame a hostage for Damon, while the latter was permitted hisliberty to bid his wife and childgoodbye. Each was willing to dieto save the other's life. Theirloyalty to each other, theadventures that beset them, and theoutcome of this noble friendship, form the basis forone of the most beautiful stories of history, exemplified by Pythian rituals.

It was a maxim of Pythagoras that the two mostexcellent things for man were "to speak the truthand to render benefits to each other"

The Fraternal Order of Knights of Pythias and itsmembers were dedicated to the cause of universalpeace and pledged to promote understanding

among men of good will as the surest means ofattaining Universal Peace. They believed thatmen, meeting in a spirit of goodwill, in an honesteffort of understanding, can live together on thisearth in peace and harmony.

The Order began during the Civil War, and itsfounder believed that it might do much to heal thewounds and allay the hatred of civil conflict.President Abraham Lincoln said:

"The purposes of your organization are mostwonderful. If we could but bring its spirit to allour citizenry, what a wonderful thing it would be.It breathes the spirit of Friendship, Charity andBenevolence.

It is one of the best agencies conceived for theupholding of government, honoring the flag, forthe reuniting of our brethren of the North and ofthe South … I would suggest (Con’t Next Page)

that these great principles byperpetuated and that you go to theCongress of the United States andask for a charter, and so organizeon a great scale throughout thisnation, and disseminate thiswonderful work that you have sonobly started …"

An application was made toCongress for a charter, and theOrder of Knights of Pythias wasthe first American Order everchartered by an Act of theCongress of the United States.

The Fraternal Order of Knightsof Pythias and its members werededicated to the cause ofuniversal peace. Pythians werepledged to the promotion ofunderstanding among men ofgood will as the surest means ofattaining Universal Peace, andbelieved that men, meeting in aspirit of goodwill, in an honest

effort of understanding, can livetogether on this earth in peaceand harmony.

The Knights of PhythiasMeetings were held on the2nd story.

An active March in term of emotions but not very

boring either when itcomes to you acting on

your ideas.Courageous or just scaredof missing out you will try

a lot of new things butnot really come up with aconclusion on what you

liked and what you disliked. This is not a time of decisions

but more like a trial periodin which you are building

up your taste.

March has some changes instore for you, especially in

regards to how you view yourrelationship, and, who knows, maybe also about how your

partner views you.

The most difficult part thoughis the fact that you won’t reallybe able to control this, no matter

how involved you are and nomatter how emotional you become.

"Seven is the holy number,"the passage begins. It thencontinues for several linesbefore ending with a crypticmessage: "In sevenlanguages, seven signs, andlanguages in seven foreignnations, look for the SevenCities of Gold. Seventy milesnorth of El Paso del Norte inthe seventh peak, Soledad, these cities have seven sealeddoors, three sealed toward therising of the Sol sun, threesealed toward the setting ofthe Sol sun, one deep withinCasa del Cueva de Oro, athigh noon. Receive health, wealth, and honor.

Pope Pius III:

Long before Victoria Peak wastaken over and surrounded by thegovernment, a man named MiltonErnest (Doc) Nosstook time exploringVictorio Peak.

November 1937,Doc, Babe, and fourothers left on a deerhunt setting upcamp on the desertfloor at the base ofVictorio Peak.

Hunting byhimself, Docscouted the base ofthe mountain. When it began torain he sought

and Doc apparently found theseventh door located at highnoon, but the promised health, wealth, and honor would evadehim. Four years before hisdiscovery, Congress had passedthe Gold Act, which outlawed theprivate ownership of gold

Others believe that Doc Nossfound the Casa del Cueva de Oro.Others believe that Noss foundthe treasure of Don Juan deOnate, who, in 1598, foundedNew Mexico as a Spanish colony.Seeking out the Seven Cities ofGold, Onate was said to havebeen a cruel man, brutallysubjugating the Indians to do hisbidding by beating and torturingthem. Reportedly, he amassed afortune of gold, silver treasureand jewels before being orderedback to Mexico City in 1607.

There is speculation that thetreasure could be the missingwealth of Emperor Maxmillian, who served as Mexico’s emperor

in the 1860’s. WhenMaxmillian heardof plot toassassinate him, hebegan to move hisgold and treasuresout of Mexico.

shelter under a rocky overhangnear the summit of the mountain. He noticed a stone that looked asif it had been “worked” in somefashion.

Lifting the rock, he found ahole that lead straight down intothe mountain. He found a hoardof treasure including coins, jewels, saddles and pricelessartifacts including a gold statueof the Virgin Mary.

In a deeper cavern, Doc found astack of gold bars. He estimatedthere were thousands of thesebars, each weighing over fortypounds stacked against a wall.

Later, the wealth in the cavewould be calculated to be worthmore than two billion dollars.

Some think that Doc Nossfound the Casa del Cueva de Oro,Spanish for the House of theGolden Cave. "Soledad" was theformer name of Victorio Peak,

Hembrillo Basin as hisstronghold.

Knowing how much the whiteman valued gold and having littleuse for it himself, he amassedhuge amounts of the yellowmineral any way he could get itand hid it from the Whites.

Another theory is that thetreasure belonged to a Catholicmissionary named Felipe La Rue,or La Ruz

On one side of the peak, theylocated a rich vein, ultimatelyworking the mine for years. Theytunneled into the mountain andfollowed the vein downward. Thedeeper they went, the richer theore became. The little priest

assigned dozens of monks andIndians to mine the gold, form itinto ingots and, except forwhatever was needed forsupplies, stack it along one wallof a natural cavern inside themountain.

When the soldiers arriveddemanding to know where thegold came from which was usedto purchase the supplies in LaMesilla, Padre La Rue refused toanswer. He died under torture, asdid many of his followers, andalthough the soldiers looked allover for evidence of a mine, theywere forced to return to MexicoCity with nothing to show fortheir long journey. The LostPadre Mine, as it has been calledever since, went into the historypages as a beloved legend.
