Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

Please Stand

Confession of Sin P: We are gathered together for worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and

of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: In this season of reflecting on our sin and deep need for God’s mercy and grace, let us examine our hearts and minds and ask for pardon for all the ways in which we have failed to be obedient to God’s will for us.

(Silence for self-reflection and examination)

P: Holy God,

C: You sent your Son, Jesus, into the world to save us from the power of sin, death, and the devil. We confess that we have failed in many ways to follow him in our lives. We have forsaken the poor and hungry, we have neglected the sick and sorrowful, and we have looked out for our own needs rather than the needs of others. Forgive us, we pray, and restore us to a new and right relationship with you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

P: We who were once dead in sin, following the course of this world rather than following our Lord have been loved with the great love of Christ — even when we were dead in sin, Christ granted us grace and new life in him. We have received the promise of God that we will be raised up with him and seated with him in the heavenly places. Let us rejoice in the wondrous gift of forgiveness and mercy and share the immeasurable riches of his grace and kindness with all the world. (Ephesians 2:1- 7)

C: Amen.

THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT March 18, 2018 ~ WELCOME!

Opening Hymn Above All

The Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ who saves us through faith, the love of the Father

who gifts us with every good gift, and the communion of the Holy Spirit who fills us with all wisdom, be with you all.

C: And also with you.

Kyrie ~ P. 78 LBW ~ Sung

A: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy.

A: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy.

A: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

Above all powers, above all kings, Above all nature and all created things, Above all wisdom and all the ways of man, You were here before the world began. Above all kingdoms, above all thrones, Above all wonders the world has ever known, Above all wealth and treasures of the earth, There’s no way to measure what you’re worth.

Crucified…laid behind a stone, You lived to die…rejected and alone. Like a rose, trampled on the ground, You took the fall And thought of me Above all.

Prayer Of The Day

lest we are enticed to love the world, and guard our spirits lest we fail to recognize your love. Grant this, we pray, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34

31“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my cove-nant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33For this is the cove-nant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my

This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia.

Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.

Power and riches and wisdom and strength, and honor and blessing and glory are his. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia.

Sing with all the people of God and join in the hymn of all creation:

Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen

This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Alleluia. Alleluia.

law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

R: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 119:9-16

ca9How shall a young man cleanse his way? By keeping to your words. 10With my whole heart I seek you; let me not stray from your commandments. 11I treasure your promise in my heart, that I may not sin against you. 12Blessed are you, O Lord; instruct me in your statutes. 13With my lips will I recite all the judgments of your mouth. 14I have taken greater delight in the way of your decrees than in all manner of riches. 15I will meditate on your commandments and give attention to your ways. 16My delight is in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

Second Reading: Hebrews 5:1-10

1Every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2He can deal gently with the ignorant and way-ward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3Because of this he is obligated to offer sacri-fice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; 6as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” 7In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard

Page 7: Our Saviour’s Lutheran hurchstorage.cloversites.com/oursaviourslutheranchurch1/...that [s Our Saviours Lutheran hurch Our Ministers The people Our Pastor Rev. Dr. Mark raaten Parish

because of his reverence. 8Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Softly and Tenderly

Communion Hymn #2 ~ LBW 518

Beautiful Savior

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me. See, on the portals he’s waiting and watching, Watching for you and for me.

Chorus: “Come home, come home! You who are weary, come home.” Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, Calling, “O sinner, come home!”

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,

Pleading for you and for me? Why should we linger and heed not his mercies, Mercies for you and for me? Chorus

Oh, for the wonderful love he has promised, Promised for you and for me! Though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon, Pardon for you and for me. Chorus

Truly I’d love thee, truly I’d serve thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man!

Communion Hymn #3 ~ LBW 98

Alas, And Did My Savior Bleed

Please Stand

Communion Blessing P: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. C: Amen.

Alas and did my Savior bleed, And did my Sov'reign die. Would He devote that sacred head For sinners such as I?

Was it for sins that I have done He groaned upon the tree Amazing pity grace unknown And love beyond degree. Well might the sun in darkness hide And shut His glories in

When God the mighty Maker died For man the creature's sin. Thus might I hide my blushing face While his dear cross appears Dissolve my heart in thankfulness And melt mine eyes to tears. But tears of grief cannot repay The debt of love I owe Here Lord I give myself away It’s all that I can do.

Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands, Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, He makes our sorrowing spirit sing. Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight, Bright the sparkling stars on high;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration, Now and forevermore be thine!

Post-Communion Prayer

P: Let us pray: Gracious God, you have fed us this holy meal of the bread of life and the cup of salvation. You have offered us forgiveness and mercy through the body and blood of Christ, and you have reconciled us to our heavenly Father. We give you thanks for these wondrous blessings, in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord.

C: Amen.

The Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. C : Amen.

Closing Hymn ~ My Faith Looks Up to Thee ~ LBW 479

Oh, may my love to thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be,

A living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread

And griefs around me spread,

Be thou my guide;

Bid darkness turn to day,

Wipe sorrow’s tears away,

Nor let me ever stray

From thee aside.

My faith looks up to thee,

Thou Lamb of Calvary,

Savior divine!

Now hear me while I pray,

Take all my guilt away,

Oh, let me from this day

Be wholly thine!

May thy rich grace impart

Strength to my fainting heart,

My zeal inspire;

As thou hast died for me,

Welcome to Our Saviour’s

We are going to have a “Welcome to OSLC” session on Sunday, April 8 at 11:15, right after worship. We will meet for lunch, a time to get acquainted, and an introduction to Lutheranism and to OSLC. This session is for people who are new to the congregation who would like to learn more, and for long time members who would like a refresher!

Sunday School Planting the Garden We are going to plant a garden in our back area. The Sunday school will do the

planting today at 9:00. Thank you to all who are helping with this project!

Helping with Easter Egg Hunt There is a table in the narthex to sign up to help with the Easter Egg Hunt and to get eggs for stuffing. Please stop by!

Primetimers After celebrating Easter with perhaps all sorts of goodies, get ready to enjoy another delicious luncheon prepared by our very own Jenny Videtto. She has volunteered to prepare a Tex-Mex lunch with ice cream for dessert. Mark your calendars now, for April 12, 2018 at 12 noon at OSLC.

Following the luncheon and a short meeting, the speaker will be Andy Meisenhei-mer who teaches Tai Chi twice a week at The First Christian Church in Tyler. This is a topic that should be of interest to those of us with much wisdom. There are many benefits to Tai Chi among which is helping one’s balance.

Once again, mark your calendars and do plan to attend the next Primetimer’s meeting. Not only will the food be great, but there will be the opportunity to learn one way to benefit the body. There is no one who will intimidate you or nothing to obligate you, just great folks to welcome you, so give us a try and do bring friends. Please notify Mary Ferguson by April 9th if you plan to attend. Since Jenny is so gra-ciously preparing the meal, let’s be helpful & respectful & let her know how much food to prepare.
