Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24 NIV

February 10th marks the day we are marked: Ash Wednesday. On that day, we are keenly reminded of our own mortality. Not that we like it. Most people would rather expend energy denying that they will return to the dust from which they came. But it is not “just” ashes… these are cross-shaped ashes, retracing the watermarked trail emblazoned on our foreheads in the waters of Baptism… Child of God, you are marked with the Cross of Christ and sealed with the Holy Spirit now and forever. As Jesus-followers, we are called to bear the cross every day. Some days this feels more real than others. But it is not about feelings. This annual, 40 day Lenten journey helps us to be more in tune with what life is really about.

When we lived in Fargo, we were tempted to believe that the house in which we lived for 17 years was our “forever” house. Living in AZ has given me fresh eyes. Many homes are sold completely furnished, as the previous occupants have no need for “stuff.” Sometimes, it is easier to just leave everything behind and start over. Sometimes divorce makes it too difficult to divide the “stuff”; it is easier to divide the cash in the end. Sometimes, one has moved from the time-bound domain of “stuff” to the time-less, post-stuff reality of God’s kingdom come.

Lent reminds us that Arizona is not our forever home. We need to be reminded from time to time that life is not only about time, but eternity. Yet time matters. The way in which you spend your time matters for time and eternity. Spare time-free time-leisure time-disposable time-killing time-wasting time all assume that time is an unlimited quantity in this life. It has been said that the mistake we make as humans is that we think we have time.

So during these 40 days of Lent, together we will reflect more deeply together on the fruit of God’s Spirit in our midst. As Paul write to the church in Galatia, “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22b-23a, NRSV Even as we harvest the abundance of citrus fruit, may we cultivate, encourage, and celebrate the fruit of God’s Holy Spirit’s presence in our midst.

I hope that you are able to make time to spend time in prayer, fasting, and acts of generosity this Lent, as these are the classic disciplines of Lent. I hope that you are able to make time to spend time in worship, in service of neighbor, in reflecting the love and forgiveness you have experienced in Christ.

I’m running out of time. Thank you for taking the time to read this message. Whatever we do, let’s make this 40 day journey count, not just for us, but for the sake of God’s so-loved world.

Your partner in time, Pastor Bill Rindy

Church Council Meeting Minutes ~ Continued

January 11, 2016 EM Coordinating Committee (CC) Meeting Write-Up Revised 1-17-2016

Time: 7pm –8:45pm

Attending: Pastor Roger, Ruth Beutel, Cindy Reichert, John Weber, Jerry Fricke, Donna Kennett, Richard Falk, Louise Lehman, Kim McCracken, Sharon Stinard, and Mike Kraklow

Pastor Roger opened with prayer

Pastor Bill could not attend but emailed the following report – The new phone system is installed and operational. One thing to resolve is the music during call waiting. It is too loud and not the best. We need to find better Church music. However, very little music is free. On the computer front, we will be moving from a network, (domain-server based), to a work group system, (shared

East Mesa Coordinating Committee ~ Continued

server base cloud system), next week. This should reduce maintenance cost and make the office virtual. If we are virtual, one can work from anywhere with the same capabilities of working in the office. The new envelope system, started on January 1st is up and running. As we anticipated, all of the address inaccuracies in our data base are now being exposed. This should result in having both up-to-date addresses for our members/attendees and help to clarify who is/is not a member any longer. These updates require both additional time and tact on Angela’s part, but she is handling them masterfully and graciously. Electronic giving is now both available and working on our site. Both donations from bank account and credit card account have been tested and veri-fied. Online sign up is exceptionally easy. Creating an account only requires a deposit slip or check for one to obtain the routing number and account number to set up one’s giving. Each donation asks if you would like to cover the administrative cost ($0.30 for a bank transfer or $0.30 + 2.75% for a credit card transaction) while you are creating your donation. I would encourage all of you to go to www.oursaviorslutheran.org and click on the green button to set up your account. You can explore the process with or without actually making a donation. The inside of the front cover of the last newsletter had an invitation with instructions included. It may be wise to include a bulle-tin insert with these same instructions. Those without a computer can still set up and account either through Kim Bergh or Angela Springfield without having to worry about confidentiality.

Ruthie – Welcome Team – The 11pm Christmas Eve candle-light service went very well. The January Welcome team meeting needs to be rescheduled. 36 new members were received from September through December 2015. Photos were taken of each couple/individual and placed on a foam board in the Narthex. The photos are labeled on the back of each photo with the Church ad-dress, names and date they were received into membership. These are removable and placed in their file in the Church office. The team also mailed, in a Christmas card, a duplicate copy of the photo to each couple/individual. The team is currently reviewing/updating the past two documents of the Church history so it will be available to future new members. The team is also updating/revising the blue slips, and prayer request forms. The Welcome Team is continuing with the goal of making a friendly place; a more friendly place. We encourage all members to do this. The next new member orientation is Saturday February 6th at 9am. It will be the same format as in December. The new members will be received at the various services the next weekend, February 13th and 14th.

Jerry – Care – Jerry plans on sitting in on each of the Care groups. The next groups he plans to sit in on is the Cancer and Grief Support groups.

Donna –Missions- This is Donna’s last meeting. The Committee thanked Donna for her hard work and dedication. Richard Falk will be responsible for Missions in the future. Fry gift cards will be handed out as needed. The Super Roll/toilet paper roll drive is this month and the rolls will be counted & distributed on Super Bowl Sunday in February. Johnny will coordinate this and contact the food banks. Travel size toiletry articles are also collected this month and year-round. Please note that all toiletry items must be alcohol-free.

Donna will make sure collection boxes are available. Any hope totes will be sent to Grace Luther-an. Donna will make sure all mission related programs are put in the bulletin and Q&Q this month. After this month, Richard will be responsible for this.

Valerie –Sunday school - Cindy Reichert – Discipleship On Sunday, December 20th was the Sunday school program. It went very well and the Sunday school staff learned a lot. The kids looked cute in their costumes. Next year, the kids need to be on a stage and program needs to be scheduled on the first Sunday of the December. Valerie recognized Cindy Reichert and Phyllis Edmond for their great work in the kitchen during the “Dinner Theater” Christmas program. We are planning vacation bible study on the third week of June. On Sunday February 7th, there will be a noisy offering after the regular offering at the 10am service. It was suggested to have a noisy offering at all services. Kim will consider this. There is Family Style services planned where the kid’s parents participate. In April, there is a potluck at Skyline Park planned. This is an introduction to Vacation Bible School. It was decided that Sunday school will coincide with the Public school schedule. Therefore, Sunday school will end on May 27th. Valerie suggested the coordinating committee members attend at least one evening of Vacation Bible School.

Kim – Sunday school, Youth & Family – The Sunday school kids will be involved in Palm Sunday. There will be two Easter egg hunts; one after the 8:45am service and one after the 10:00am service at East Mesa. Kim encourages everyone to attend Pastor Roger’s Bible study at 10am on Saturday at East Mesa. The Boy Scouts will meet in the Sanctuary next Monday instead of the overflow room because of the WELCA Bazaar. The Family Spot program is active. They are planning a messy play day for Mothers and kids in the Church kitchen. The Church youth have been busy picking fruit for the WELCA Bazaar. So far they have picked 7 large containers of fruit. On the January 24th, the youth will be making pancakes at the Gold Canyon campus. On February 19th, there will be youth lock-in, starting at 5:30pm. At this event, the youth are planning a work-shop/instruction time on Facebook for the congregation. On January 31st; we will fine tune the Sunday school events for the upcoming year. Kim announced that she passed her first semester of schooling and registered for her second semester.

John – Music – Dwight Walth has announced his retirement after this choir year. Dwight has been here 18 years. We are looking for a replacement. Richard at Gold Canyon said no to the position. The Choir has been from September to May; looking at changing the choir season from November to Easter. Dwight’s retirement party will be Sunday April 10th. Cake/coffee will be served. Mike will ask the council if the Church will give a retirement gift to Dwight for his 18 years of service.

Louise – WELCA –The WELCA Bazaar is January 22 & 23rd Bazaar. The tables and donated items will be brought up from the basement this Sunday after the 11:15am service. No Bake-Bake sale donation envelopes will be put all pews for the month of February. Our WELCA Sunshine Lady who sends cards to people in the hospital is having a difficult time getting a list of OSLC attendees in the hospital because current privacy laws. It was suggested that the Sunshine lady talk to Pastor Bill and possibly fill out the envelopes at the Church.

Page 7: Our Savior’s Lutheran Church East Mesa and Gold Canyon Our

Mike – Worship – A list of service times and other pertinent OSLC information will be put in the outgoing bazaar bag purchases. Ash Wednesday is February 10th and Easter is March 27th. We also need to start planning for the Lenten Soup suppers. We are still having problems getting Ushers for the 11:15am service. The Committee members recommended in eliminating the 11:15am service after Easter, March 27th. The Committee members also recommended that the 2016 high season service times (Nov 1st – May 1st) be 4:00pm (Saturday) 7:30am, 9:00am, and 10:30am (Sunday). Sunday school will be at 10:30am. Mike will discuss these items at the January Council Meeting.

Sharon – Administration -We have been looking at another vendor for our security and fire service. Cameras, lighting, and trip beams are being considered to keep our staff safe and property secure. We are still budgeting for a Seasonal Pastor for November through April to assist in visita-tions. We are interviewing several HVAC contractors to replace the current HVAC contactor. Mike and Bob at Gold Canyon have done a complete inventory of the AC units. Facility Manager and Communication Manager positions have been discussed. We are still having Technology meetings. From these meetings, our wish list in the future would include positioning monitors in the Narthex and Community room to inform the congregation on current/future events.

Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of the SW and LSS ND would like to host an appreciation event at OSLC on January 31 from 2 – 4pm. They would serve dessert (think Pie day), share a little of what is happening at the LSS's and have some Q&A time. The primary purpose is to say thank you. It would take place in the over-flow room. The tables in the community room could be used for the desserts. Everyone in the congregation would be invited. Other congregations would be invited also. Information about this event will be put in the bulletin, Q&Q, and calendar.

1. Candidates are needed for upcoming Council vacancies- contact nominating committee 2. Blood Drive is on January 25th at EM – 8am to 12pm 3. Pastor Roger’s Bible Study is on Saturdays at 10am 4. The 2016 Budget is being developed – any input from committee members is appreciated

Mission Updates~ Donna Kennett

Super Roll Sunday is in full swing! We will continue to collect toilet paper rolls until Jan 31. Gold Canyon and Apache Junction Food Banks will thank you, as well as the families that will be receiving it. I’m sure they will thank you from “the bottom” of their hearts!

As an ongoing project, we will be collecting travel size toiletry items for “God’s Work Our Hands” project in Sept. This would include shampoo, soap, shave cream, non-alcohol mouthwash, non-alcohol hand sanitizer, socks, etc. Please be sure they are “travel size”. I will have a container in the Narthex to put them in. Thank you for your support.

On another note: This will be my last newsletter article as Council for Missions. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving in this position for the last three years and six years before that! We could not have served as many, touched as many hearts, helped as many people as we did without the awesome support of our awesome congregation! It was such a pleasure to be “the messenger” to “spread the spirit” as we did together. Thank you all again so much for your donations, your time, your prayers, making it such a pleasure to serve. It is now time to pass it on!

Many Blessings, Donna Kennett

MISSION CORNER

The month of February is time for the women’s “NO BAKE - BAKE SALE”. In lieu of buying the ingredients and making the items, you simply set aside money you would have spent and put it in the designated en-velopes which you will find in the pew racks. If you wish to write a check, please write in the information line of the check that it is for the No Bake – Bake sale. The proceeds from this drive will be used to sup-port our food banks in Mesa, Apache Junction and Gold Canyon during the summer. We thank you in advance for your support towards food for the summer months.

Bazaar Report From the President of WELCA

I want to express my thanks to all those who worked before, during and after our Bazaar here at church the weekend of January 22 and 23. So many men and women worked diligently to insure it went off without a hitch as usual. Too many names to list, but I want to give a special thanks to Mike Kraklow, who organized everyone into a well-oiled machine, Martha Vredenburg who kept the financial side of things in order and Phyllis Edmond, who kept the food service portion of our event operating efficiently. Many ladies presented a feast of home baked goodies for the Bake Sale which was very well received by those in attendance. Of course I need to thank our youth, who went throughout the neighborhoods picking fruit for our sale. Our net proceeds (after expenses) of the sale approached $6000.00. The distribution of the proceeds will be determined by our organization at our February General Meeting. It can be expected that local, state and international organiza-tions will all be included in the final distribution figures. The actual gifts will be pre-sented at our March Spring Celebration. Again thank you for your gifts of time and talent! Louise Lehman

Dear OSLC Family and Friends

I want to thank everyone who donated items and bought items at the 2016 WELCA Bazaar. The success of the event was a team effort and was only made possible by the dedication, hard work, and experience of our volunteers. It was a joy and honor to work with such great peo-ple. We are truly blessed at Our Savior’s.

Thanks again,

Mike Kraklow

Message from Our Savior’s Youth and Family Minister– Kim McCracken

Just wanted to share with everyone that I have successfully completed my first semester of Semi-nary with a 92.6% (Jesus helped, a lot). During this semester I learned a lot about myself and my relationship with God. I learned some tools in how to be a leader in the church as well as helping others grow in their leadership. I have learned that it is okay to fail and that failing leads to growth. However, I think the most important thing that I have learned is to trust God and glorify Him in everything!! Blessings!! - Kim

Thank you from the Youth Thank you to the Gold Canyon campus for your support of our youth! Through your generosity at the

Gold Canyon pancake breakfast, we raised around $500.00. These funds will be used to support fellowship events, service events, camps and gatherings for the youth.

The Memorial Wall another touching way to remember loved ones who have passed. While no ashes are held within the memorial wall, it does include a marble plaque, an engraving, and a guarantee of perpetual care. This costs $200.00.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church wants to be there for you in every way we can; especially when it comes to one of the hardest topics to discuss with others. Where will your earthly remain be interred until Jesus’s return? The Columbarium at Our Savior’s Lutheran was built to give our members and attendees an additional option.

Our Savior’s Columbarium is located at our Gold Canyon campus (5301 S. Kings Ranch Road) It sits in the shadows of the Superstition Mountains and Sunday morning soft music is played; creating a serene and tranquil home for one’s earthly remains. For the cost of $1000.00 one can have his/her remains placed within the columbarium, with an engraving, as well as guarantee of perpetual care.

Members, associate members, and guests are all invited to schedule an appointment to take a tour of the Gold Canyon Campus and the Our Savior’s Columbarium. If you are interested please call the Our Savior’s main office (480-984-5555) and ask to speak to Shirley Hackney, the Gold Canyon receptionist.
