Remodeling: Have you ever remodeled a home? a car? a piece of fur-niture? On one hand, there are the things one can anticipate, for which one can prepare. On the other hand, there are always un-anticipated items to make the project more shall we say…interesting?

I was recently speaking with a grandfather of a child whose hips/legs were turned the wrong way. He sang the praises of the Shriner’s Children’s hospital who is caring for this child by doing some remodel-ing of the legs without charge. Each femur was cut, rotated 90 degrees so that the legs would be straight, then placed in casts to heal. That this is even possible is quite amazing. While this beloved child may never run a marathon (but who knows?), s/he will at least have a good chance at walking and a more normal (if there is such a thing) life.

As the time draws nearer to celebrating a remodeling project of our own, we have learned a lot about our lot, and about the nature of the people who worship here at Our Savior’s. A letter went out to all asking the question: Does God still have a mission for OSLC in the east valley? Your collective response has been a resounding “YES!”. Over $240,000 has come in since then and the end is closer in sight. We will need to use the $100,000 loan that the congregation approved… and a bit more. Yet this is quite remarkable, and we will continue to do God’s work together as OSLC.

Adversity and challenges often reveal character during remodeling. Your character is showing. Your generosity is extraordinary! Many a congregation would have been closed by a project of this magnitude. Your generosity reflects that of your Father in heaven. Your persistence is showing, in that ministries of all kinds and types continue even in the face of adversity, like our Lord Jesus Christ. Your sense of community, common unity, is on display, as each and all have pulled together as we seek to emerge on the other side. Com-mon unity was Jesus’ highest prayer on his last night.

In Holy Baptism, we quote Jesus to the newly baptized: Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5, Sermon on the Mount)

As God continues the remodeling projects in each of our lives, may the generosity, persistence, unity, and light of Christ flow through us all in the years to come!
