Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Transforming Lives and Building Community by Loving God and Serving Others March 2018 Lent is commonly a time for people to take on new disciplines that help them grow in their devotion to a faith filled life and develop a stronger relationship with God. This kind of holy focus over the 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter (minus the Sundays) takes shape in various ways of abstaining from things, but most often includes a focused discipline for this period of time with ones prayer life, study, serving, giving or reading. While we are a few weeks into Lent this can still be a time to begin such a discipline. Let me share with you a few insights and reflections from the book a few groups are walking through together this Lent to bring you some ideas and insights of how God has been stirring within us. The 23 rd Psalm is a beloved psalm used often in times of distress and mourning for the comfort it brings. But during this Lent one verse has stood out with a different take. He makes me to lie down in green pastures, he restores my soulis now being heard as a beautiful reminder that God draws us into devotion and prayer (green pastures to be nourished) with the goal of God to restore our souls. This is the wonderful invitation and promise. Using Luthers practice when we sometimes are unsure of what to pray for he reminds us to go through the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20), The Apostles Creed, and/or the Lords Prayer and see how we would find places to be more prayerful from reflecting on portions of those. Luther could pause at various parts of these core faith components and enjoy deeper reflection by taking a small section and focusing first on what it teaches, then where it stirs thankfulness, how it brings confession, and then allow it to stir prayer. This fourfold approach keeps a mind more focused and helps build our trust and relation- ship with God. We are finding that while often times it is difficult to fit into the day the time for reading, reflection, writing and prayer, it is a helpful practice and one that actually makes us want to do it more. May your days of Lent find you focused on the life and work, the teachings and directions of Jesus. And may God use the work of your devotions and disciplines during Lent and throughout the year to draw you closer, both to restore your soul and lead you in your Christian life. Pastor Karsten

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Transforming Lives and Building Community by Loving God and Serving Others

March 2018

Lent is commonly a time for people to take on new disciplines that help them grow in their devotion to a faith filled life and develop a stronger relationship with God. This kind of holy focus over the 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter (minus the Sundays) takes shape in various ways of abstaining from things, but most often includes a focused discipline for this period of time with one’s prayer life, study, serving, giving or reading. While we are a few weeks into Lent this can still be a time to begin such a discipline.

Let me share with you a few insights and reflections from the book a few groups are walking through together this Lent to bring you some ideas and insights of how God has been stirring within us. The 23rd Psalm is a beloved psalm used often in times of distress and mourning for the comfort it brings. But during this Lent one verse has stood out with a different take. “He makes me to lie down in green pastures, he restores my soul” is now being heard as a beautiful reminder that God draws us into devotion and prayer (green pastures to be nourished) with the goal of God to restore our souls. This is the wonderful invitation and promise. Using Luther’s practice when we sometimes are unsure of what to pray for he reminds us to go through the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20), The Apostles Creed, and/or the Lord’s Prayer and see how we would find places to be more prayerful from reflecting on portions of those. Luther could pause at various parts of these core faith components and enjoy deeper reflection by taking a small section and focusing first on what it teaches, then where it stirs thankfulness, how it brings confession, and then allow it to stir prayer. This fourfold approach keeps a mind more focused and helps build our trust and relation-ship with God.

Holy Week Please plan to join us during Holy Week as we walk with Jesus through his final days of life before seeing him crucified and then resurrected. On Thursday, March 29th we gather for Maundy (which means command) Thursday worship at Our Redeemer at 7:00pm. On Friday the 30th we gather together for what is often the most meaningful service of the year, joining with the other East Side Lutheran congrega-tions for our shared Good Friday service which is hosted by a different church each year. This year we are at First Lutheran Church (463 Maria – across from Metro State University) at 7:00pm. Then of course we have Easter Sunday worship at Our Redeemer and we will be moving back to two services on that day – join us at 8:45 for our traditional worship and at 10:45 for a new contemporary service.

Update on the LIFT Campaign We want to thank our members for lifting up Our Redeemer in such a great way through our LIFT (Living Into our Future Together) Campaign. We wanted to let you know we have now received pledges of $160,000 dollars to date, and have already collected $58,000 dollars toward the goal – this is really good and a sign of God’s stirring our generosity and our strong desire for more growth and strength as a congregation. It is still not too late to participate in this campaign – you can simply add an amount to your envelopes or send a special gift to the office any time over the next three years. The money, as stated in our materials, will primarily be used to hire an associate minister for a three year commitment, with some dollars to provide resources to be successful in that position, and having some money available to enhance our worship services.

Looking ahead to a new staff person The Call Committee put forth a recommendation to the Board to hire a new Associate Minister. The Board voted to move forward with the hiring process after the candidate meets with the Board members and other leaders of the congregation. The person we would like to bring on as the Associate Minister is Jennifer Schneider and she comes with lots of leadership experience and a variety of work within the church. She served as the Director of the Southeast Asian ministry through the St. Paul Area Synod, served in an office management position at Gustavus Adolphus and has been a key lay leader at Atonement Lutheran in New Brighton (the congregation where our intern turned Pastor, Peter Weston Miller has been serving). She comes to us with a passion for strengthening the church, a deep value for the life and work of the church, good education and training, and a real interest to come and serve at Our Redeemer. She has been a Deacon in the church which is the new level of leader-ship referred to as Word and Service (more about that in days ahead). We would like to invite the congregation to a time of ‘meet and greet’ with Jennifer on Sunday, March 18th following worship. After she spends some time with us that morning in conversation and questions we will have a congregational vote about hiring her. We would like to give a big “THANK YOU” to the call committee for their hard work and dedication to bring a new minister to Our Redeemer. The members of the call committee are: Cathryn Heimerdinger, Hilary Hinrichs, Judy Koza, Frank Matteson, Jessica Morgan, Cliff Peterson and Doreen Winter. Be sure to thank them for their time and talents.

Thrivent Members Thrivent Action Team Grants are a great way for you to be able to help Our Redeemer carry out good mission work. If you have a Thrivent policy or investment you have access to two $250 Action Team grants every year that can be used in any variety of ways. If you want help in learning how to apply for these and assist various ministries of Our Redeemer please contact with Pastor Karsten at church or Roland Kringle at 952-923-6555. Various projects where we can utilize those include Dorothy Day serving, Vegetable Garden equipment, Project Home materials, Doulos school or Tanzania resources, Youth fundraisers for camp, or other service related ideas we are working on. Also, please check your accounts one more time for any Choice Dollars from 2017 which are still waiting for you to designate to a charity, hopefully to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Any Choice Dollars remaining undesignated on March 31 will expire. "Thanks to each member for your diligence, and "Thank you, Thrivent", for this beneficial program

Praise and Pamper Praise and Pamper day for women will be on Saturday, May 5 from 9am to 4pm. This day for Women of God will feature devotions, music, a special speaker, catered lunch from Lake Elmo Inn, crafts, beauty & pamper options, home sale items and a meditational labyrinth. This is for all women, young, seasoned and in between. Planning has started and if you would like to take part in this fun activity, call Kathi Kirchoff at 651-245-3533. We're Back! The Quilting Group's hiatus is over and we're looking forward to another season of quilting at ORLC! This long established service group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30. (This is a slight time change.) We tie yarn to the assembled quilt tops to ready hem for hem-ming. The only skills you need are to be able to hold a needle and tie a knot! The cutting of quilt squares, piecing and sewing of the fabric squares is done by some of the members at their homes. You don't have to bring any supplies...we have enough to share. Please consider being a part of this legacy by joining the fun and good conversation on March 12 and 26, April 9 and 23, May 14, June 11 and 25, etc. Come and check us out at any or all of the sessions!

Minnesota Food Share Month Please remember that March is the month that local food shelves around the state encourage us to be particularity mindful of how we partner and support the work they do to help address and alleviate hunger in our local communities. Donations of boxed/canned goods can be dropped off in the baskets at the front entry - these are then taken over to Merrick Community Services for distribution. Cash donation can be marked and left in the offering plates or the office. One advantage to giving money is that the food shelves can buy 3-4 times more food with their buying power that we can at our local grocery store. Thanks for your caring help for our community.

ORLC Serving at Dorothy Day Monday, February 26th , 14 ORLC members prepared and served a spaghetti and meatball dinner to 188 people who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. The ORLC Hunger team wants to thank Thrivent Financial for a $250 Thrivent Action Team grant that helped cover part of the meal cost. Thank You Thrivent for being involved in our communities and Thank You Thrivent members for making the grant possible. The experience is a gift to us as we serve people who have so little but are so thankful for the food we provide. We are humbled as we receive “Thank You” and “God Bless You” many times as we serve the meal. The number of people we are serving has trended down since we have been serving at the new location Mary Hall. Staff indicated that is partly due to the new Higher Ground St Paul Shelter. Staff said people are able to have apartments with kitchens giving them choices. Also, the second phase of Higher Ground St Paul construction is being built with completion expected in 2019. The second facility will include more housing, a veterans resource hub, a health clinic, a workforce development training center, a commercial kitchen and a cafeteria that can seat up to 300 people.

If you live in North St. Paul, you are eligible to receive free smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and stove top fire stops. In addition to providing and installing these products, a home safety inspection is conducted to give guidance on ways to increase safety in the home. This is the Safe Haven program from the NSP Fire Dept. It takes approximately 45-60 minutes and is scheduled at your convenience. or Visit www.northstpaul.org/safehaven or call 651-747-2405.
