Today the church celebrates the fest of Pentecost. The word Pentecost literally means 50th. It is a feast celebrated on the 50th day after the Passover feast by the Jews and a feast celebrated on the 50th day after the feast of the Resurrection of Jesus (Easter) by the Christians. The Jewish Pentecost was originally a post-harvest thanksgiving feast. Later, the Jews included in it the remembrance of God’s Covenants with Noah after the Flood and with Moses receiving the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. The Bible tells us that on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary as fiery tongues. The frightened apostles were transformed into fiery preachers and evangelizers and were given the gift of tongues by a special anointing of the Holy Spirit. The listeners experienced the Power and Presence of the Holy Spirit through the apostles’ gift of tongues: they heard Peter speaking in their native languages. The early Christians became powerful witnesses and brave martyrs for their Faith in Jesus. As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost today, let us be opened to the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Courage, Knowledge, Piety (Reverence), Wonder and Awe (Fear of the Lord). Let us give permission and allow the Holy Spirit to take control of our lives and use us for the Kingdom and Glory of God.

“Come Holy Spirit Make our ears to hear Make our eyes to see

Make our mouths to speak Make our hearts to seek

Make our hands to reach out And touch the world with your love.

AMEN.” (Prayer of Blessed John Hendry Cardinal Newman)

A Vocation View:

Pastor’s Letter to parishioners: Dear parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Since May 16, public Mass has been celebrated in church using 25% of the occupancy of the church. The following directives are to be implemented for each Mass:

1. The people of the Archdiocese are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

2. If someone is vulnerable and not feeling well, they should not celebrate Mass in church with other people.

3. Attendance at Mass: The number of people who can gather in the church is not to exceed 25% of the occupancy of the church. This applies also to Baptisms, Weddings, and funerals. This number will increase gradually.

4. Social distancing must be observed – 6 feet apart.

5. Make sure all ministers observe proper hygiene of their hands.

6. Regarding the celebration of Mass:

• Ministers and parishioners should wear a mask.

• The priest/deacons should wear a mask at communion.

• Give communion with no bodily contact. Gently let the host touch the person’s hand and drop it in their hand without touching them.

• Communion on the tongue is not encouraged.

• The chalice with the precious blood is not to be offered.

• The sign of peace can be given by bowing to the other person.

• As people depart from Mass, social distancing must be observed.

8. For all of us here at Our Lady Star of the Sea catholic Church: We will continue to have Facebook live streaming of our Sunday masses in the next few weeks.

Thank you for your patience with all of this! The number who may attend will increase gradually, but in the meantime, we want to cooperate, so the virus does not spread. Stay safe and God bless you Fr. Emanuel Tanu, SVD Pastor

Please know that your generous contributions to support our Church have always been greatly appreciated. Your stewardship is an act of thanksgiving for all that God has done for you, your family, and our community. So, I pray may God continue to bless you and your family abundantly as you share your finan-cial blessing with our church community. (Fr. Emanuel Tanu, SVD)
