Promesas Bautismales:Promesas Bautismales:Promesas Bautismales:Promesas Bautismales: ¿Renuncias a Satanás?¿Renuncias a Satanás?¿Renuncias a Satanás?¿Renuncias a Satanás?

Baptismal Promises: Baptismal Promises: Baptismal Promises: Baptismal Promises: Do you reject Satan?Do you reject Satan?Do you reject Satan?Do you reject Satan? During Lent, we prepare ourselves for public promises. The Elect of the Church will make those promises for the first time at the Easter Vigil just be-fore they are baptized. Those of us already baptized will also renew our baptismal promises at the Easter Vigil. The first question all will be asked on that most holy of all nights is “Do you reject Satan?” In the early church, one publicly rejected Satan by facing west (where the sun set,) renouncing him, sometimes even spitting in that direction, as a sign that one was spitting in the devil’s face. Today we hear how Jesus rejected Satan by re-nouncing the power, the fame and the security that Satan offered. On Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday) we see where that renunciation leads Jesus –to the powerlessness and death that are the way to his everlasting glory. No wonder we need an entire season to prepare ourselves to make those promises. It is serious stuff! Let us pray throughout the remainder of this Lenten season for the courage to keep our prom-ises.

Community Catechesis Reform your lives! 1st Sunday of Lent

Week of February 26, 2012

Listen to the Word (Mark 1:12-15) As you hear this very short Gospel reading, what words or

phrases strike you? What image or story does the reading prompt you to recall?

Look into your life

Question for Children: What will you do this Lent to become more like Jesus?

Question for Youth: Lent gives us a chance to do things differ-ently – to "go to the desert." How can you make Lent a time for growing in faith?

Question for Adults: What is the one area of your life which you most want to "reform" as you get ready to embrace the Gospel, what is it?

Activities for this week Take these activities to reflect on the readings: ▪ Talk about ways family members can become more like Jesus during the season of Lent. Create a family prayer space in your home. Read from the gospels each day. Have each family mem-ber choose a Lenten practice and write it on a piece of paper. The papers can be folded and placed in the prayer space as a re-minder. ▪ In Baptism, we turn away from sin and selfishness to live in love according to God's plan. Recall with your child or children the story of his or her Baptism. Share family photos. Christians make a new beginning in Baptism. Discuss these ques-tions: What new beginnings could our family make this year? In order to make these new beginnings, what will we have to do? ▪ Whenever the family gathers to pray this week, pray for those who are preparing for Baptism or full membership in the Catholic Church.

corresponsales cristianos, encontramos inspira-

Stewardship by the Bible

FEBRUARY 26TH

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

Baptism and repentance are the themes of today’s readings. In Baptism we are saved

and called to be Christ’s disciples. Steward-

ship is how we act out this call to disciple-ship. At Easter, we will strengthen our dis-

cipleship by renewing our baptismal prom-

ises including a commitment to reject the glamour of evil in our lives. We, as Chris-

tian stewards, find inspiration in today’s

Gospel where Jesus, in the desert, repeat-

edly stands firm against the devil’s tempta-tions. May we seek the Lord’s guidance and

strength in our times of weakness to avoid

temptation that leads to sin.

The Cursillo Movement

The Cursillo Movement is a lay movement within the Catholic Church which started in Spain in the 1940’s and has spread throughout the world. Cursillo is a Spanish word for a “short course”, in this case a short course in Christianity. With men and women attending separate weekends, we learn that it is our responsibility to spread God’s message throughout the world through our actions and His Word. We are also given a methodology to accomplish this in our regular lives.

The Atlanta Catholic Cursillo holds weekends twice a year. The next set of weekends will be in March: March 8

th - 11

th for MEN March 15

th - 18

th for WOMEN

If you are interested in attending these weekends or are just interested in learning more, please contact Drew Shurmantine at 770-720-3017 or [email protected].

Annual My House Collection

Since 2002, our parish has generously sup- ported My House, an institution that upholds the dignity of human life by caring for babies who have special medical problems and don’t have a family to care for them. The My House box is at the church entrance and contains cards with suggested dona-tions, as well as My House envelopes for gift card donations. You may bring your donations to the Parish Center during February and March and place them on the designated table.
