PARISH LIFE AND MINISTRY

Evening Prayer, July 25

The weather may have tried to dampen the spirits of our Summer Evening Prayer this past Monday, but we were

not afraid of the thunder! We moved indoors to the audi-torium where a somewhat smaller group prayed together

and enjoyed themselves in spite of the weather. Special thanks to Fr. Frank for giving the homily, to Jim Kendall and Lizz Dow for the wonderful music and to all those who

helped set-up, participate and clean up afterwards.

We look forward to seeing many more at the next Summer Evening Prayer on August 8.

Directed by Mrs. Amy Keller

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Dress Rehearsal Monday, August 22 at 5:00 p.m.

Performance

Monday, August 22 at 7:00 p.m.

The daring, triumphant story of Esther is brought to vivid life in this new musical by composer Erik Whitehill. Through the story of Esther, travel to the citadel of Susa where King Ahasuerus names Esther his new queen - and where Esther faces the decision of her life. Will wicked Haman prevail? Or will selfless Mordecai convince Esther to trust in God and save her people? With a nod to Broadway, Esther is filled with memorable melodies - from fun and whimsical reprises to expressive, heartfelt ballads.

REMINDER REGARDING REMINDER REGARDING REMINDER REGARDING REMINDER REGARDING THE COMMUNION FASTTHE COMMUNION FASTTHE COMMUNION FASTTHE COMMUNION FAST

Please remember that we are supposed to observe a Communion Fast before receiving Holy Communion. This means we do not eat any foods or drink any liquids for one hour before receiving Holy Communion, the only exception being water or medi-cine. This also means that we are not to chew gum during Mass, and certainly not while we are coming forward to receive Holy Communion. Let’s be sure we are appropriately prepared to receive Holy Commun-ion by observing this important rule of the Church.

PRAYER AND WORSHIP

The Way You Are Dressed DOES Matter!

Please dress appropriately for Mass during the summer months. Attire that is meant for the beach, barbecues, boat or athletic field is inap-propriate for Mass and is disrespectful to the Lord as we offer ourselves to Him through the sacred actions in which we are engaged. It is al-so disrespectful to one’s brothers and sisters in the community. Your cooperation in continuing to dress up and dress appropriately for Mass during the summer weather is appreciated.

Evening Prayer All are invited to pray Evening Prayer on Saturdays and Sundays after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Here we pray the psalms, listen to the Word of God and give thanks to God for the blessings of the day. Evening Prayer is usually about ten to fifteen minutes in length. So come and pray…

The Monday night Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help has been a longstanding OLPH tradition. Each

Monday, parishioners pray to seek the help and assis-tance of the Lord for healing, family, children and the needs of the world, seeking the intercession of the Blessed Mother. Following the Novena prayers, Ex-position of the Blessed Sacrament takes place. The evening concludes with veneration of a relic of St. Catherine Laboure. Take some time each Monday to join in the OLPH Novena.

Prayer for PeacePrayer for PeacePrayer for PeacePrayer for Peace

This Holy Hour for Peace, with prayers focusing on the intention of peace, will be held on the second, third and fourth Sunday evenings of the month from

7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Lord Jesus Christ,

who are called the Prince of Peace, Who are yourself our peace and our reconciliation,

Who so often said ‘Peace to you’, Grant us peace!

Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice and brotherly love.

Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee

and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth become as brothers and sisters.

May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. AMEN

Mary, Queen of Peace, Pray for us! (Pope Saint John XXIII)

On the nights of Summer Evening Prayer, the OLPH Novena Prayers will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. in the Church. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will not be held on these nights so that all may participate in Evening Prayer.

The Junior Legion of Mary is a perfect blend of prayer and works that will lead you to a moral life, and you will have fun doing it. Some of the works we are currently involved with is the May crowning of the Blessed Mother, helping serve at the Community Meals, making rosaries, visiting nursing homes, sending cards to our military, just to name a few. The word Legion means army. The Legion of Mary is our Blessed Mother’s army. Our ammu-nition is the rosary and the Miraculous Medal. There is no obligation to join. Come to a meeting held in Room 24 of the School at 1:30 p.m. on any Sunday and see what it is all about. There will be two members of the Senior Legion of Mary pre-sent at all meetings. Refreshments will be served.

COMMUNITY OF PRAISE The Community of Praise is a welcoming group of parishioners committed to living in the Holy Spirit. We meet each week to praise God in song, pray with each other, study Scriptures, and support each other on our journey of faith. We support the parish by our prayers, by joining with other parish groups for special pro-jects, and by offering the Life in the Spirit Semi-nar. All are welcome to come and pray and praise with us, just once every week. We meet in Room 16 of the school every Tuesday night from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.

FIRST FRIDAY, FIRST SATURDAY

All are invited to come and pray with our parish community.

First Friday Devotions will take place August 5 after the 6:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Masses.

What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor our per-ceived security, but of being possessed by God. In the month of July, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families by providing food, help with utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

“Baby Problems?” –

Don’t give up…there is always HOPE. For example – Shellie & Greg Tucker were expecting a baby. Suddenly the doctor recommended “termination” because they would not survive since they were “co-joined” and shared a diaphragm and liver. As the doctor was saying this, the mother felt her babies kicking inside of her. They refused abortion and searched for another doctor. Four years later they have two separated happy “normal” little girls, climbing and getting into "trouble." They were separated at 8 months after a 7 hour operation. If you know ANYONE considering abortion or who has been advised to abort, do NOT be silent. Offer them hope and direct them to doctors who believe in life – Gianna Center/Gabriel’s Courage at Good Samaritan Hospital or the Life Center or Birthright. Call our Respect Life Committee for more infor-mation – Louise 631-412-3831.

Spiritual Adoption Program

“Mommy felt me kick today!”

Your spiritually adopted baby weighs over one pound now, and his mother can feel his movement. Before this time he was too small for her to feel. Alt-hough he swam with ease in his watery world, he needed to be big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside wall and dent it - the inside wall of the uterus has little feeling. We are mid-way through the pregnancy now. Your prayers have helped your baby’s mother contin-ue with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs.

Thank you, thank you to all who gave of

their time, talents and services which

helped make our 2016 Vacation Bible Camp a tremendous success. Without your generosity we could not

have had such a successful summer.

Thank You! You are in our prayers.

Readings for the Week Take time each day to read the daily readings of the Church.

PREPARING FOR Sunday, August 7, 2016—The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.”’ Luke 12:32

Wisdom 18:6-9

For centuries Israelites suffered as slaves in Egypt. All the while, they clung to the promises or “oaths” God made to their ancestors. Despite the passage of so much time and despite their desperate circumstances the people put their faith in God believing he would be faithful and not disappoint them. God was faithful to his promises. He sent them Mo-ses who led them out of Egypt after the night of the Passover when the Egyptians were punished and the “holy children of the good” were saved. Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19

The author of the letter to the Hebrews speaks of faith that stands firm despite many trials, including the trial we endure when God seems to be silent. Abraham and the other heroes mentioned later in this chap-ter clung to faith over decades and generations; they left their home-land and dwelled in tents in foreign lands, hung onto promises of nu-merous descendants, and even died without seeing the complete fulfill-ment of God’s promises. Faith enabled them to see with their mind’s eye and with their hearts what God had promised but had not yet come to be. “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” In that, they model to us what is necessary in the life of every believer. Luke 12:32-48

In this reading, Jesus gives us multiple examples of the difference be-tween prepared, faithful servants and self-serving, unfaithful servants in order to teach us about preparedness. One important strategy he teach-es us for being prepared is “Do not be afraid,” which is Scripture’s most commonly repeated phrase. If we are not concerned with losing our possessions here on Earth we can store up treasures for ourselves in heaven. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” This is an invitation from Jesus to have faith in him alone, that is, to make his Gospel our only treasure so that our hearts will always be with his.

Gospel Reflection Questions…. After reading next Sunday’s Gospel take some time to pray on it before you come to Mass. Use the questions below to aid your reflection.

1. In the Gospel, Jesus says to “be like servants who await their master’s re-turn from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.” The servants are watching for the master. Do you “watch” for God in your everyday life? Where do you find him?

2. When you look for what Jesus calls the “inexhaustible treasure,” he sug-gests: “Sell your belongings and give alms … for where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Pope Francis, speaking to the youth in the Philippines, tells them to “become beg-gars,” so they might learn to receive. If they (we) are evangelized by the poor, what “inexhaustible treasure” will we receive from them?

You still lack one thing. Become a beggar. This is what you still lack. Learn how to beg. This isn't easy to understand. To learn how to beg. To learn how to receive with humility. To learn to be evange-lized by the poor, by those we help, the sick, orphans, they have so much to give us. Have I learned how to beg? Or am I self-sufficient? Do I think I need noth-ing? Do you know you too are poor? Do you know your own poverty and your need to receive? Do you let yourselves be evange-lized by those you serve? This is what helps you mature in your commitment to give to others. Learn how to open your hand from your very own poverty.

(Moved by young Filipinos who read their messages and told their stories, Pope Fran-cis discarded his prepared message and did impromptu remarks in Spanish translated by Msgr. Mark Miles in English)
