¡Feliz Año nuevo otra vez ...!

Aun cuando la Iglesia comienza el año con la celebración de la Solemnidad del Tehotokos —María, Madre de Dios, lo que está en la mente de la mayoría de la gente es la celebración civil del Día de Año Nuevo. Celebrar el inicio del un año calendario se remonta a unos 4000 años, cuando a principios de primavera el pueblo de la antigua Babilonia celebraba el despertar de la naturaleza del sueño in-vernal. Con el tiempo los romanos adoptaron una fecha de marzo para el inicio del año hasta el año 46 AEC, cuando Julio César cambió la fecha al 1 de enero. En la antigua Roma este día se celebra una fiesta en honor del dios Jano, dios romano que tenía dos caras: una hacia el año que acababa de pasar y la otra hacia el año que comenzaba. La fiesta en honor a Jano era un momento de gran celebración y de juerga para los romanos; sin embargo, para los cristianos de Roma era un día de ayuno y oración. En el siglo VII la Iglesia Occidental, seguió la práctica de la Iglesia Oriental y comenzó a celebrar este día en honor a María la Madre de Dios. La Iglesia Oriental había estado celebrando un "Día de la Madre de Dios", desde los alrededores del año 500 AD (EC.) En Occidente, esta se consideraba la primera fiesta Mariana. Unos siglos más tarde la fiesta se celebraba como la circuncisión de Jesús y la Octava de Navidad. En 1969 fue restaurada la antigua práctica de cele-brar la fiesta del Theotokos. El evangelio de hoy nos invita a ser como Jano: con los pastores nos remontamos a la encarnación glorificando y alabando a Dios por el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador, con ganas de dar a conocer el mensaje de que la salvación de Dios ha amanecido sobre nosotros. Con María miramos hacia adelante y man-tenemos el mensaje y lo reflexionamos en nuestros corazones. Al igual que María contemplamos las obras maravillosas de la salvación que Dios nos da. Al desearnos unos a otros un "Feliz Año Nuevo" en realidad es-tamos deseandonos un año lleno de gracia en el que podemos responder a las maravillas de Dios. Nuestro "Feliz Año Nuevo" es más que un saludo de paso, es una promesa de que po-demos ser como los pastores y de María y aceptar la presencia de Dios con nosotros y en nosotros. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo ...!

Happy New Year again...!

Even though the Church begins the calendar year with the celebration of the Solemnity of the Theotokos —Mary, Mother of God, what’s in most people’s minds is the civil celebration of New Years Day. Celebrating the beginning of a calendar year goes back some 4000 years when in early spring the people of an-cient Babylonia celebrated nature waking up from winter’s sleep. Eventually the Romans adopted a March date for the beginning of the year until the year 46 BC when Julius Caesar changed the date to January 1st. In ancient Rome this day celebrated a feast in honor of Janus, a Roman god who had two faces: one facing the year that had just passed and one facing the year to come. The feast to honor Janus was a time of great celebration and carousing for the Romans; however, for the Christians in Rome it was a time of fast and prayer. In the seventh century the Western Church followed the practice of the Eastern Church and began to celebrate this day in honor of Mary the Mother of God. The Eastern Church had been celebrating a “Day of the Theotokos” since around the year 500 AD. In the West this was considered the earliest Marian feast. A few centuries later the feast was cele-brated as the circumcision of Jesus and the Octave of Christmas. Then in 1969 it was restored to the older prac-tice to celebrate the feast of the Theotokos. The gospel for today invites us to be like Janus: with the shepherds we look back to the incarnation glorifying and praising God for the birth of our Saviour, wanting to make known the message that God’s salvation has dawned upon us. With Mary we look forward and keep the message and reflect on it in our hearts. Like Mary we contemplate God’s marvelous deeds of salvation. As we wish each other a “Happy New Year” we are really wishing each other a grace filled year where we can re-spond to God’s marvelous deeds. Our “Happy New year” is more than a passing greeting, it is a pledge that we can be like the shepherds and Mary and embrace god’s presence to us and in us. Happy new Year...!

Escucha la Palabra (Lucas 2:16-21) ¿Qué imagen de esta historia de Navidad permanece contigo?

¿Qué frase o palabra llama tu atención? ¿Cómo te imaginas que se sintió María?

Ve tu vida Pregunta para los niños: María meditaba. ¿Saben lo que quiere decir la palabra "meditar"? Significa pensar en silencio y profundamente sobre algo. Tomen tiempo para meditar sobre el mensaje del Evangelio de hoy.

Pregunta para los jóvenes: ¿Qué harían si estuvieran en la situación de María y José en el establo? ¿Estarían contentos por tener cobijo o disgus-tados por haber tenido que quedarse en un establo? ¿Por qué creen que esto sucedió de esta manera? ¿Creen que José y María estaban decepcio-nados por las circunstancias en que se encontraban?

Pregunta para los adultos: María apreciaba y meditaba en su corazón sobre las alabanzas dadas a Dios por el nacimiento del Rey recién nacido. ¿Con cuánta frecuencia aprecian y meditan sobre la gloriosa creación de Dios.

Actividades para esta semana Tomen estas actividades para reflexionar sobre las lecturas del domingo: ▪ Den a cada niño un pequeño regalo. Cuando pregunten por qué, digan que es un regalo de gracia, no tienen que hacer nada a cambio. Luego, digan que el regalo de salvación de Dios a través de Jesús es un regalo que no tiene que pagarse, pero que debe reconocerse por lo que es: amor incondicional. Pidan a su familia que piensen en el amor que sienten y pi-dan que evalúen si ellos atan condiciones a ese amor. Sugieran que traten de desarrollar el sentido de lo que es el amor incondicional hacia Dios y al prójimo. ▪ Visiten una tienda de comidas para animales, una granja o una tienda de provisiones ecuestres. Busquen heno y olores de animales que puedan sentir en familia. Luego determinen si ese sería el ambiente donde se es-peraría que el rey de los reyes naciera. Look into your life Question for Children: Mary pondered. Do you know what the word "ponder" means? It means to think quietly and deeply about something. Take time to ponder the message of the Gos-pel reading today.

Question for Youth: What would you do if you were Joseph or Mary and in their situation in the stable? Would you be content to have shelter, or angry that you had to stay in a stable? Why do you think this happened in this way? Do you think Joseph and Mary were disappointed in their circumstances?

Question for Adults: Mary treasured and pondered in her heart the praise given to God for the newborn King. How often do you treasure and ponder God's glorious creation?

Activities for this week Take these activities to further reflect on the Sunday readings: ▪ Give each child a small individual gift. When they ask why, tell them it is a gift of grace, no strings attached. Then tell them that God's gift of salvation through Jesus is a gift that is not to be repaid, but to be recognized for what it is: unconditional love. Ask your family to think about the love they feel, and have them evaluate whether or not they attach conditions to their love. Suggest they try and develop a sense of unconditional love towards God and others. ▪ Visit a feed and seed store, a farm, or an equestrian supply store. Find hay and animal smells for your family to experience. Then determine whether that would be the setting you would expect for the King of kings to be born. Discuss the different viewpoints and also discuss how God's appearances are not so clear to us because we don't have the mind of God. How can your family learn to release expectations and have faith in the mystery God gives us so that we can build our faith?

SOLMENITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

In St. Luke’s Gospel, shepherds find Ma-ry, Joseph, and the infant Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem and understood what had been told them — Mary, the Mother of God, has given birth to Jesus, the Word made flesh. Mary, along with Joseph, be-comes the first disciple of Christ. St. Paul teaches that through Jesus, the Son of God, born of Mary, we become children of God. Stewardship begins by accepting discipleship in the Lord. Let us follow Mary’s example of fully trusting in God’s call and doing His will in our lives.

who gave Christmas greetings and gifts to me and the other members of our pastoral staff, we sin-

cerely appreciate your kindness.
