September 29

7:3o p.m. in Church

Join us for a candlelight prayer service to help us reflect on the mystery of the Cross and the glory of Christ’s resurrection. Consider setting aside 45

minutes to join in this beautiful and contemplative form of prayer.

After many, many years of ministry to OLPH, Deacon Frank Odin is retiring from active ministry. Join us as we pray for Deacon Frank and offer thanksgiving for his diaconal service.

Mass: 12:00 Noon Sunday, September 25

Hospitality in the Auditorium to follow the Mass

“Deacons are ordained by the laying on of hands, a tradition handed down from the Apostles, so that through sacramental grace they may effectively fulfill their ministry. Therefore, even from early Apostolic

times, the Catholic Church has held the holy Order of the Diaconate in high honor.”—Rite of Ordination of Deacons, #173

Catechetical Sunday Today is Catechetical Sunday, and we are pleased to bless and commission our catechists at the 10:00 a.m. Mass this weekend, as we ask them to commit to their ministry of teaching and forming the young people of our parish. The dedicated men and women who offer their time and the witness of their faith week after week in our religious education program deserve our admira-tion and gratitude. They are truly engaging in a most vital ministry, that of forming our young people in the faith. They do so out of their love for the Lord and their desire to bring His grace to others. THANK YOU to all who offer their time and talent in our religious educa-tion program as catechists, and also to those who offer in other ways as well, as assistants and hall monitors. The theme for this year’s Catechetical Sunday is “Prayer: The Faith Prayed.” What a wonderful theme to remind us of how prayer must be the center of any ministerial activity! This theme invites not only cate-chists, but actually all the baptized, to devote them-selves to a deeper study and practice of prayer, for their own spiritual good and for the good of those they serve. Part Four of the Catechism of the Catholic Church provides an excellent overview of prayer; I encourage you to spend some time reading it. We can think of the words of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, for whom “…prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.” Also, the words of St. Francis de Sales are helpful: “every one of us needs half an hour of prayer each day except when we’re busy ― then we need an hour.” The goal of prayer is to open our minds and hearts to a deeper relationship with God ― Father, Son and Holy Spirit ― present and at work in our lives. Daily prayer shines the light of the Gospel on everything we do, so that all our thoughts, words and actions can be informed and measured by love of God and neighbor. On this Catechetical Sunday, all of us, but catechists especially, can more deeply appreciate how prayer is so essential in the life of a Christian. Finally, we must take a moment to thank April Kleinlaut, our Director of Faith Formation, and her office staff of Anna Green, Christine Graham and Jessica Becker for the great work they do in the reli-gious education office, putting in such time and energy attending to so many details. Thanks to all of you! Religious Education Enrollment Prayer Services Allow me to mention a specific element of our religious formation program here at OLPH: we begin the year with Enrollment Prayer Services for all levels. These Enrollment Prayer Services are attended by both

parents and children together, as a way of prayerfully dedicating the upcoming formation year to God, and, just as importantly, as a way of highlighting the im-portant commitment parents are asked to make in the formation of their children. Children, too, are asked to commit themselves to being open to the formation that lies in the year ahead. Families with children in Levels 1 and 2 enroll in and commit themselves each year to the two-year prep-aration for the Sacrament of Eucharist. Families with children in Levels 6, 7 and 8 enroll in and commit themselves each year to the three-year preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Families with children in Levels 3, 4 and 5 will, for the first time this year (and coming up this Saturday, September 24) enroll in and commit themselves each year to their ongoing for-mation in the faith. We place a high priority on parent involvement in the religious formation of their children, since par-ents are the primary religious educators of their chil-dren. In addition, the ministry of religious formation of children should really be looked upon as ministry to the entire family, and parent involvement through the expe-riences of prayer services, parent formation meetings, and open house visits to the child’s classroom helps us to work toward that goal. Another Busy Week at OLPH… There are a number of activities coming up at OLPH this week…because, after all, OLPH is “the place to be!” Our 6th annual Golf Outing is this Monday, September 19. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, it is always a day of great golf, great camaraderie and great fun. It is also an important fund raiser for both the Knights and the parish, as the Council and the parish split the profits. Thanks to the Knights who work so hard on this event each year! On Thursday of this week, the Pastoral Council resumes its meetings for the upcoming “ministerial year.” I always look forward to the discussions that take place at these meetings, and the input provided by the members of the Council is very valuable to me. The Pastoral Council is an important leadership structure in the life of the parish, and I am grateful to all who offer their time and expertise on the Council, especially to Tricia Buckley, the Chair, for her leadership and com-mitment. This coming Saturday is the diocesan pilgrimage to the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., in celebration of the Year of Mer-cy. We wish safe travels to all who are going on this trip, and I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Ange-la Garofalo who has been our parish coordinator for the

trip. Angela has been overseeing a myriad of details, including handling reservation of the bus, all the regis-trations, and interacting with the diocese on other de-tails. Thank you, Angela; all your time and effort will bear good fruit in the spiritual benefits which will be experienced by those who go on the pilgrimage! Celebration for Deacon Frank Odin As you have seen from our bulletin announce-ments, next Sunday is our celebration for Deacon Frank Odin who is fully retiring and stepping down from public ministry. I do hope you can join us at the 12:00 Noon Mass and at the hospitality which will fol-low. This will be a great occasion to pray for Deacon Frank and to personally wish him well after the Mass. We have to remember one important thing, though, which I am happy to be able to say: although Deacon Frank is stepping down from public ministry, he is not going anywhere! He will continue to be a vital part of the OLPH parish community through his prayer and presence. Even though he won’t be functioning as a deacon at Mass and other liturgies, you will continue to see him and his wife Barbara in the congregation at Mass, and Deacon Frank will continue to be a part of the Ministry of Praise prayer group and will lead the Benediction and Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesday afternoons. We thank Deacon Frank for his many years of diaconal ministry to OLPH, and we look forward to next week’s celebration! Some thoughts about faithful citizenship Now that we are past Labor Day, the campaign season, especially in this year of a presidential election, will really kick into high gear. We will be bombarded with all sorts of news and rhetoric, and the upcoming debates will be quite prevalent in our news and social media. Throughout it all, Catholics must have well-formed and informed consciences so that they might be both faithful citizens and faithful Catholics in the cast-ing of their vote. I strongly, strongly urge all of you to become informed of the issues and to understand them from the perspective of Catholic Church teaching. Now is the time to begin to think about and pray about all of this. Go to the website of the Catholic Bishops of the United States at http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/ for information about forming consciences for faithful citizenship, and you can even download the full document at http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/forming-consciences-for-faithful-citizenship-title.cfm and read it and pray over it. I cannot overemphasize the importance of Catholics voting in such a way so that the teachings of the Church are represented in the voting process.

I would just like to add two thoughts of my own at this time, and these are, in fact, taken from reflec-tions that Bishop Murphy recently offered. First, let’s all avoid buying into the error of personally demoniz-ing an opposing candidate. To cite past performance and a public record is one thing, and it is a fair point; to accuse someone of hatred or prejudice is just plain wrong. Be careful when a candidate is attacked because of a different world-view; if we buy into that kind of intolerance, then, as Bishop Murphy has written, “…we run the risk of becoming a society where the goal is not the victory of defending a position but the defeat of the other, which results in a defeat for our society.” Second, allow me to point out an important ele-ment of Catholic social teaching, that of the proper re-lationship between the person and society. Pressure groups trying to impose their will on others is not de-mocracy. I again take Bishop Murphy’s words as my own: “We have [wrongly and unfortunately] become a society of individuals, each one demanding his or her ‘rights.’ Very often, what they insist upon is not even a right in the real sense of the word. Often they are call-ing for personal privileges they want society to guaran-tee them individually or as a ‘special class’ within socie-ty. In too many situations, they use the language of vic-timization. While their issues are real and deserve a serious hearing and reasoned response, the proponents of a particular ‘cause’ should not feel free to label oth-ers negatively or use rhetoric that denies the rights of others who do not fully support all that they want.” Those thoughts are good for us to remember as we try to decide to vote for the candidate who will best, even if not perfectly, be in line with Catholic social teaching. We must never forget our responsibility to uphold not just individual goods, but the common good. Legitimate goals of the person or group must al-ways be achieved within the context of whether or not their goals are compatible with the common good of the whole society. An individual or one group cannot look out only for oneself if what one person or one group wants is destructive of the common good of soci-ety. Let’s all go through this election season prayerfully and prudently, looking at everything through the lens of the teaching of the Catholic Church. In conclusion… Together, let’s aim high in Christ. Together, let’s bring out the best in each other. Together, let’s be the best we can be in Christ. And let’s always remember: LOVE IS A GIFT. Sincerely,

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4 5:30 P.M. ON THE RECTORY LAWN

The Church celebrates the Feast of St. Francis. St. Francis has contributed so much to the life of our Church, in so many ways. One of the things he is noted for is recognition of God’s presence in all of creation, including animals.

We invite all members of our parish community (even those that crawl, fly and have four legs) to come for a special prayer service and blessing. Following the service, there will be refreshments for all, including our human family members and friends.

And, in the spirit of St. Francis, we ask all who attend the prayer service to bring a food or non-food donation for our food pantry. Please see page 13 for specific needs.

As required by the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Sacraments of Initiation are to be celebrated in the home parish of the child. Therefore, all families of OLPH with children celebrating First Commun-ion and Confirmation are to have their children celebrate those sacraments at OLPH. As Catholics, our faith identity is centered in our Eucharistic identity, namely, the Sunday worshipping community we belong to (where we celebrate Mass Sunday after Sunday). This community is our primary community and the community in which our faith is lived, day in and day out. Because of this, and because each year of religious formation builds on the prior one, all school-aged children who are parishioners of OLPH, regardless of where they attend school, must be regis-tered with our Religious Education Office for all years of religious formation (not only for sacra-ment-preparation years). • Children in all grades who attend public school attend religion classes in our Religious Educa-tion Program, and they and their parents also participate in various non-classroom religious formation experiences. • Children in all grades who attend a Catholic elementary school need not attend the Religious Education classes, but they must be registered with us, and they and their parents participate in all the non-classroom religious formation experiences, especially but not only in sacrament-preparation years. • Children in all grades who are homeschooled must also be registered with the Religious Edu-cation Office; they may or may not be required to attend the Religious Education classes, depending on their homeschool curriculum, but regardless, the homeschooled children and their parents are to attend the various non-classroom formation experiences, especially but not only in sacrament-preparation years. If you are a parishioner with children in a Catholic elementary school or who are homeschooled and you are not yet on record with our Religious Education Office, please contact the office immediate-ly. If you know of anyone who should be registered, please let them know of this policy. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Please remember that we are supposed to ob-serve a Communion Fast before receiving Holy Com-munion. This means we do not eat any foods or drink any liquids for one hour before receiving Holy Com-munion, the only exception being water or medicine. This also means that we are not to chew gum during Mass, and certainly not while we are coming forward to receive Holy Communion. Let’s be sure we are ap-propriately prepared to receive Holy Communion by observing this important rule of the Church.

PRAYER AND WORSHIP

Evening Prayer All are invited to pray Evening Prayer on Saturdays and Sundays after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Here we pray the psalms, listen to the Word of God and give thanks to God for the blessings of the day. Evening Prayer is usually about ten to fifteen minutes in length. So come and pray…

‘continues his priestly work through his Church….Pastors of souls should see to it that the princi-pal hours, especially Vespers (Evening Prayer) are cele-brated in common in church on Sundays and on the

more solemn feasts.’”

In response to Bishop Murphy’s call for parishes to ur-gently pray for peace because of all the unrest in the world, please join us for a special Holy Hour devoted to praying for world peace within our own country and throughout the world. This Holy Hour for Peace, with prayers focusing on the intention of peace, will be held on the second, third and fourth Sunday evenings of the month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Holy Hour of Reparation which has been held on the first Sunday of the month will continue every first Sunday evening as usual, with the prayers that are usually said for that first Sunday Holy Hour.

This Holy Hour for Peace, with prayers focusing on the intention of peace, will be held on the second, third and fourth Sunday evenings of the month from

7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Lord Jesus Christ,

who are called the Prince of Peace, Who are yourself our peace

and our reconciliation, Who so often said ‘Peace to you’,

Grant us peace! Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice and brotherly love.

Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee

and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth

become as brothers and sisters. May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always

over us all. AMEN

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD at 10:00 a.m. MASS BEGINS IN TWO WEEKS―ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2!

Allowing children to participate fully in the liturgical life of the parish is an important goal which we strive to attain here at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Children should have every opportunity to understand what worship is all about and to be formed by the rites of the Church, especially the celebration of the Eucharist. In order to achieve this goal, we are happy to resume the Children’s Liturgy of the Word which will be a part of the 10:00 a.m. Mass each Sunday beginning again in two weeks, on Sunday, October 2.

Where does the idea of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word come from? It comes out of the Directory for Masses with Children which tells us in paragraph 17, “Sometimes, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant, room. Then, before the Eucharistic liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own Liturgy of the Word.”

How does the Children’s Liturgy of the Word work? After the Collect (the Opening Prayer of the Mass), children first-grade and older are invited to come forward to the sanctuary to receive a special dismissal. They are then escorted to a separate chapel set up in the north sac-risty of the church, where they listen to that Sunday’s readings as proclaimed from the Lectionary for Masses with Children. These are the same readings everyone else is hearing in the church, but in a slightly different translation that is easier for children to understand. A special homily is then given to the children to help them understand the readings. This Liturgy of the Word concludes with the Prayer of the Faithful, as the children pray interces-sions together. Meanwhile, the Liturgy of the Word has continued as usual in the church. The children return to the church at the beginning of the collection/presentation of the gifts, and participate in the Liturgy of the Eucha-rist as usual.

What is the purpose of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word? The purpose of this is not to offer a babysitting service, nor is it to isolate the children or to make them feel un-welcome. Rather, it is actually an act of hospitality to them: they will be given the chance to listen to the Sunday readings and participate in a homily that will be on their level, and yet still be a part of the worshiping assembly, since they participate in all other parts of the Mass. It does require a certain maturity level and ability to focus, so it is intended for first-grade children and older, not kindergartners, pre-schoolers or toddlers. Parents do not ac-company their children; we have specially-trained adult “shepherds” who will keep watch. Participating in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word continues to teach children how to participate in Mass, since they do the same things that are being done in the main body of the church. Ideally, parents and children then talk to each other on the ride home or later in the day about what they heard in their respective homilies. In this way, God’s Word continues to be alive and active in the family’s faith life.

Suppose I want my child to stay with me in the main body of the church? That’s fine; parents are in no way required to send their children to the Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and no child is forced to participate. Children are welcome to stay in the main body of the church and to participate in the Liturgy of the Word there, where the usual readings and homily will take place. Since we think this is a great opportunity for children, though, we do hope you will encourage your child to participate.

Catechetical Sunday September 18, 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As the chief catechist of the Diocese of Rockville Centre I am delighted to join you in the celebra-

tion of Catechetical Sunday 2016! How appropriate it is for us to focus on this year’s theme: “Prayer: The Faith Prayed” as we continue our celebration of the Year of Mercy.

This year’s theme reminds me of the adage used so frequently by liturgists for many centuries: lex

orandi lex credendi. This Latin phrase states so succinctly the intimate relationship between the law of prayer and the law of belief. What a timely meditation for all of the baptized who are called by Pope Francis to be missionary disciples in the world today. We cannot spread the Gospel if we don’t first pray. We can’t know the Gospel if we do not hear the Word of God proclaimed in our Sunday assemblies.

On this Catechetical Sunday we give thanks to all those in our parishes who give their time and

talent to bringing the Word to life in our various catechetical programs. We give thanks too for all who strive to make our Sunday liturgies opportunities for our families to gather and pray as one, holy, catho-lic and universal church here in the Diocese of Rockville Centre as they pray together at Sunday Mass in the parish.

As we continue to pray during this Year of Mercy let us reach out to all those who participate in

our catechetical programs. Let us provide opportunities for them to come to Sunday Mass to experience the joy of being one with us as we come together each week as the Merciful Body of Christ.

With my prayers and best wishes, I am

Faithfully yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre

SACRAMENTS OF MERCY AND HEALING

The Sacrament of Penance (or Reconciliation, or “Going to Confession”) and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick are two beautiful sacraments, but they are often misunderstood and sometimes even feared. However, these sacraments are all about Christ’s healing and mercy. This course will examine the sacramental, liturgical and pastoral aspects of these sacraments in order to discover the beautiful ways the Church continues Christ’s work of mercy and healing through them. This course is especially appropriate during the closing weeks of the Year of Mercy.

Don’t Forget Your Baby Bottle! Next weekend, September 24th & 25th,

OLPH Parish will be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island, a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. They provide: • free pregnancy test kits • maternity housing referrals with eligibility require-

ments • sonograms by a licensed physician when necessary • crisis intervention counseling • pre-natal & post-natal guidance • material aid such as cribs, car seats, diapers, etc. • referral assistance for: continuing education & • employment opportunities

We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle.

The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place. Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children.

Remembering and Caring for our Senior Priests

Do you ever think about a favorite Pastor or Parish Priest and wonder how they are and where they may be living?

Well, for 14 of our Senior Priests who are living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility in Amityville, life is good and some-times very busy. As an example, Father Martin Hall had spent many years in Notre Dame in New Hyde Park before he was assigned as Associate Pastor at St. Bernard’s in Levittown, where he was an important part of that Parish community. Father Hall, however, is also fondly remembered for being instrumental to the establishment of the Apostolate for the Deaf. Born to parents who were deaf, Father Hall learned how to sign at a

very early age and intimately un-derstood how important it was for Catholics with hearing impair-ments to be able to practice and be connected to their faith and their church. (l-r) Rev. Msgr. Thomas Costa and

Rev. Martin Hall

Although retired, Father Hall con-

tinues to be involved with that ministry and frequently joins Monsignor Tom Costa, Vicar of Senior Priests, when he says Mass for people with hearing impairments, either at St. Igna-tius Loyola, on the 1st Sunday of every month, or at St. Frances de Chantal on the 3rd Sunday of every month. Father Hall is always met with great fondness and affection.

Many members of the St. Pius Community also continue their ministry much closer to home. Father Marty Klein and a number of other retired priests joyfully celebrate Mass on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of every month for all of the lay resi-dents of Dominican Village and they also lead Holy Hour prayers every Friday evening and offer Reconciliation during the Advent and Lenten seasons.

While these important services for the Lay residents of Do-minican Village help bring Christ’s message of love and ser-vice to many people who may not be able to attend Mass out-side, they also allow our Senior Priests to work directly with the people that they have devoted their entire lives to serv-ing. “Still on duty” St. Pius X provides the opportunity for our sen-ior priests residing there to remain fully engaged members of our Diocesan community, serving as our teachers, counse-lors, and spiritual leaders.

The special collection for retired priests liv-ing at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility will take place next weekend, September 24/25. Please be as generous as possible! Thank You!

Gospel Reflection Questions…. After reading next Sunday’s Gospel take some time to pray on it before you come to Mass. Use the questions below to aid your reflection.

1. Where would you find Lazarus today? What would s/he look like? Do you recognize and care for him/her as God’s beloved child, or do you try to get to the other side of the street when you see him/her coming? 2. Pope Francis says that “vast wealth and resources are in the hands of few.” If it’s not in your capability to change that unjust situation, what smaller things can you do to answer the “cry of the poor”? This scene reminds us of the harsh words of the Son of man during the final last judgment: “I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was ... naked and you did not clothe me” (Matthew 25:42). Lazarus represents the silent cry of the poor of all times and the contradictions of a world where vast wealth and re-sources are in the hands of few. …

(Pope Francis concluded say-ing that) the Word of God can revive a withered heart and heal it of blindness, and that God’s saving message over-turns the situations of this world by the triumph of His justice and mercy.

Pope Francis, “To Ignore The Poor Is To

Despise God”

General Audience, May 18, 2016

Amos 6:1a, 4-7

As in last week’s first reading, the prophet Amos harshly criticizes those who live a comfortable lifestyle while ignoring the needs of the poor who surround them. He is blunt and forceful in his critique because he understands that love of God never ignores the needs of one’s neighbors and that prayer and religious sacrifice don’t substitute for righteous living that includes sharing resources with the needy. This is a powerful message even for us today. Amos speaks for a God who cares about injustice and won’t stand idly by as it happens. He proph-ecies that God will avenge the poor and so he did just a few years later in 721 BC when the powerful Assyrian army destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel and carried off many into exile. 1 Timothy 6:11-16

This letter, written late in Paul’s career, is to Timothy, a young man whom Paul converted and who accompanied him on his second and third missionary jour-neys. Timothy is described as the administrator of the entire community at Ephesus, in present-day Turkey. In this letter, Paul instructs his young protégé on his duty to restrain false teaching and also gives many practical principles for instructing the church in righteous conduct. Throughout, Paul exhorts Timothy to remain strong in the faith. He urges him to “compete well” to the finish line and “keep the commandment,” that is, to surrender completely to God until Jesus returns in glory. Perhaps we can let Paul also encourage us to remain strong in our faith.

Luke 16:19-31

The message of this Gospel reading, like that of the first reading today, is neither easy nor welcome. In both, we’re told that it is possible to run out of time and that there is no reversing the fate that follows the sounding of the final bell. Through this parable of Lazarus and the rich man Jesus cautions us to keep our eye on the clock. When we hear of God’s mercy we might sometimes think that everything depends on God. While God never tires of forgiving us, we still need to ask for that forgiveness and then accept his mercy. Jesus speaks of hearts so hard that they will not believe even one who has risen from the dead knowing full well that the one rising from the dead would be him. We pray that our hearts never become so complacent or hard that we cannot hear his call to mer-cy.
