CONCERN AMERICA Craft Sale: March 12

Volunteers for Concern America will be here at OLG next Sunday with a Craft Sale featuring unique quality handcrafts that provide us with the opportunity to purchase conscientiously. The gifts we find for special events, holidays, or to brighten our own homes are an exchange of caring with impoverished communities in developing countries. This year we have many new crafts from Bangladesh, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico. Inspired by nature, these beautifully handcrafted textiles, ceramics and wood products, honor indigenous traditions, and were selected to be reminders that when a Concern America product is purchased we are providing a source of income to materially poor communities; promoting hu-man-scale endeavors; encouraging eco-friendly work pat-terns and fair working conditions. Concern America is an international development and refugee aid organization based in Santa Ana, CA. (714) 953-8575. Website: www.concernamerica.org

Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir For the First Sunday in Lent, the Gloria Dei Choir sings Vi-cente Chavarría’s setting of Michael Joncas’ On Eagle’s Wings. Fr. Joncas (b. 1951) is a priest, liturgical theologi-an, and composer. He received an MA in liturgy from the University of Notre Dame in 1978 and went on to study at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome. He was or-dained in 1980 and teaches at the University of St. Thom-as and at Notre Dame. This, his most famous devotional song, was composed in 1975 for the funeral of the father of his friend and classmate, producer Douglas Hall. The song is often sung at funerals, notably that of tenor Luci-ano Pavarotti in 2007, and now appears in hymnals of many Protestant denominations. The text to the fourth verse is drawn from Psalm 91:11-12, which is quoted in today’s Gospel reading. During Communion, the choir sings “Since By Man Came Death” from G.F. Handel’s celebrated oratorio Messiah. The text from 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 parallels the theme in today’s Epistle reading from Romans 5 that since sin and death came into the world through one man (Adam), so would salvation and resurrection come into the world through one man (Jesus). This chorus is drawn from the third section of the oratorio, which is less familiar to many listeners who have only heard the first “Christmas portion” of Messiah.
