FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART

June brings us to summer—hopefully. The spring has been cool and wet. However, we are blessed as we look at the devestation in the south and mid-west from windstorms and floods. We pray for those enduring and recovering from this harsh season.

Memorials – The end of May brings Memorial Day weekend and a time for remembering our loved ones who have gone on to be with the Lord. I will be out of town that weekend on a family trip. So, we will delay our time of remembrance until Sunday, June 5th. See the article on the facing page for more details on this special service of remembrance.

Fathers – We gave thanks for our mothers in May, and now it is time to remember our dads. We will celebrate and honor our fathers on Father’s Day, June 19th during the morning worship service. We will also kick off our Summer Sunday Night Concerts on the Lawn that evening as well.

Work Teams – Our first work team of the summer, from the United Church of Christ in Southbury CT, will be with us from June 25th – July 1st. They will be our largest group ever at one time—a team of 60 youth and adults. I will be the Alderson Ministerial Association liaison for this team. So, I will be quite busy coordinating and supporting their efforts the last two weeks of June. I look forward to the wonderful work we will accomplish for many families in our community through the efforts or our three work teams this summer.

Like Father, Like Child

The July Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast will be Saturday, July 9th

at 8am at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, we likely see traits in our dads (or other father figures) that we hope to be known for ourselves: integrity, gentleness, a great sense of humor, a love of learning, and a humble spirit.

Amy Grant’s song “Father’s Eyes” tells of a young girl who wants nothing more than for others to recognize her father—and her heavenly Father—in her. “When people look inside my life, I want to hear them say, ‘She’s got her father’s eyes.’”

What characteristics of God your Father are reflected in your eyes, heart, and life? And what godly qualities would you like to cultivate?

May others see our heavenly Father in us!

United Church of Christ Southbury, CT Work Team Week

Your Finance Team meets on a regular basis to monitor our church budget and spending. Thank you for your regular tithes and special offerings. Each month, we want to present an overview of where we are

financially.

General Fund for the Month Ended April 30, 2011:Beginning Balance $13,808.36 + Total Income $10,964.59 − Total Expenses $15,351.51Ending Balance $ 9,421.44

Your Finance Team also wants to make you aware of several extraordinary maintenance needs we have incurred this year which were not a part of our budget plan. First, a major repair to our boiler was essential in order to keep our building heated this past winter. Second, repairs to our elevator were mandated to keep it in safe, working order and to allow everyone to enjoy activities in our Fellowship Hall. Third, as many of you have noticed, we have a new external lighting system for the main entrance and the side of the church facing the parsonage. While these repairs/updates were done cost-effectively through the coordination of our House and Grounds Team and Official Board, they were still expensive as you can see from the summary here.

Boiler Repairs $3,905Elevator Repairs $2,462External Lighting $1,694Total $8,061

We need your help to replenish our church Building Fund which was utilized at the direction of the Official Board to make most of these

repairs. If you can, please give a special offering—over and above your regular tithe—to help replenish our Building Fund for future needs.

Strategies for Building MoraleHere are seven practical ideas for building a new sense of morale in our congregation. What can you do today to build our church’s morale?

1. Be Positive Yourself – When you are positive, other people begin to think in a positive manner. Follow the example of Jesus, who saw beyond the disciples’ problems and invested in their possibilities. Monitor your language to make certain it sets a good tone about the church. Show your ownership and care for the church by helping keep it clean and in good repair.2. Find the Silver Lining – As common wisdom predicts, even the darkest cloud has a silver lining. Every situation, no matter how dire, has its good aspects. Find the positive in your situation and highlight it. Speak about the good, the hopeful, and the excellent. Find the good that is happening in your church and call attention to it. Thank people who are overworked, bless the past accomplishments noting that God is still doing good things today, and be sure to focus on prayers of thanksgiving. Talk about your church’s strengths, not weaknesses.3. Celebrate All Victories – If you review your Old Testament history, you’ll find that, as one person put it, “God loves a party.” God commanded that his people hold feasts and celebrations as a way of reminding them of his love and care. Whenever you see the smallest of triumphs, celebrate it. Remember: Little victories lead to large triumphs.4. Employ Hopeful Language – Talk about opportunities rather than problems. Speak of challenges instead of limitations. Banish the word failure but give voice to the word experiment. Whenever a new experiment does not work, you now know of another way that does not work. Experiments very often do not work out as planned, but they do lead to ideas that work in the future.5. Change the Rules – Don’t bring a problem for others to solve but identify three solutions. For every negative, think of three positive alternatives.6. Recruit Encouragers – Find people who are positive thinkers and give them opportunities to be cheerleaders.

7. Follow the Church’s Vision – Find the passion imbedded in your church’s DNA and bring it to the front. Build on the core values, the passions of your church in order to reach your vision of the future with God.

Summer Sunday Night Concerts on the Lawn

We are once again sponsoring our popular Summer Sunday Night Concerts on the Lawn. All concerts begin at 7:00pm on the lawn across the street from the church. Bring a lawn chair and a friend. All concerts are free and open to anyone in the community. A love offering will be received to support the ministries of the guest artist(s). In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the church. Below is our current schedule. If you know of a good gospel group or soloist, please provide Donna Simms (445-2862) with their contact information.
