Bonus Special Ends Saturday at Oak Tree Lanes ABTA BPAA TO CELEBRATE WOMEN’S PROFESSIONAL BOWLING IN 2014 Women’s All Star Tournament and Bowling’s U.S. Senior Women’s Open Set For Rockford, Illinois ARLINGTON, TX — The Bowling Proprietors’ Asso- ciation of America (BPAA) today announced plans for two exciting women’s bowl- ing tournaments in 2014. The Women’s All Star Tournament and Bowling’s U.S. Senior Women’s Open are scheduled for Rockford, Illinois in mid- July 2014. The two contests include a dinner honoring women bowlers as well as oth- er events celebrating the his- tory of women’s professional bowling. “Women have made so many valuable contributions to the sport of bowling and pro- vided some of the best excite- ment on the lanes,” said BPAA President Cathy DeSocio. “It is only fitting we honor the stars of the past as well as showcase the stars of today and the fu- ture,” adding, “Traditionally, women have not had the same type of high profile events as the men, and we think this is a perfect opportunity to turn the spotlight on them.” Women’s pro bowling started in 1959 with the origi- nal Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) holding their first event in 1960. The Ladies Pro Bowling Tour (LPBT), which began in 1981, became the new PWBA in 1998 and enjoyed a five year run. BPAA’s Tournament Com- mittee says it will focus on the Women’s All Star Tournament and Bowling’s U.S. Senior Women’s Open while they re- boot the Men’s and Women’s Bowling’s U.S. Open formats to resume in 2015. “After running successful events in Dallas, Reno and most recently in Columbus, and soliciting in-depth feed- back from participants and BPAA member centers, we want to look at ways to fresh- en and improve the Men’s and Women’s Bowling’s U.S. Opens in 2015 and beyond.” said John Losito, chair of the BPAA Tournament Commit- tee. “In the meantime, we are excited to have the opportunity to celebrate women’s bowling in 2014 with these two great events.” SAN BERNARDINO — This is a GHOST STORY. It is A BOWLERS TALE which re- ally happened. At least I think it happened. How can anyone be sure what’s real when deal- ing with spirits? My friend Walker operates a Pro Shop in a mountain com- munity above San Bernardino, California. He loves the ele- vated climate and the wonder- ful people residing in the cabin community among the pines. It is an area of blue skies, clean air, evergreens and clear water lakes. The sweet smell of wild flowers is everywhere. I enjoy driving up the mountain occasionally to visit and bowl a few games. Those old wooden lanes are a chal- lenge and make me appreciate the benefits of our synthetics. Normally I only travel those winding roads dur- ing periods of good weather. However, there are occasional special events that make it necessary to go in bad weath- er. An evening birthday party a few months ago was one of those occasions. It was “raining buckets” that night as I started up old Route 18. About a mile up the highway I pulled to the road side to adjust my wiper blades. When back in the driver’s seat I saw a beautiful blonde standing a few feet in front of the car. She wore a white blouse and skirt with match- ing belt. To boot, she had a pair of bowling shoes on! Her blouse had red stitched letters which read “LaVerne.” When she turned and signaled for me to wait, I could see there were four inch red letters on the back of her blouse. Those letters spelled BUDWEISER. She was a classic Budweiser girl from the 1950s. While it continued to pour, a damp fog began to roll across the highway. With visibility at zero I began to shake. I was SPOOKED. I calmed down a bit when Laverne signaled for me to relax. It helped to see her very calm. Then I noticed that she remained perfectly dry while in the midst of the storm! “BELIEVE IT OR NOT” nothing touched her. I still remember wondering what is going on? The lady in white then walked to the side, entered the car and sat next to me. “Okay it’s safe to go” she said. As I drove we began to talk and I asked who she was? She said she was “THE GHOST OF LAVERNE CARTER!” I told her I WAS SCARED AS HELL and she responded “don’t use that word, I have friends there and they hate it.” LaVerne continued, say- ing she came to protect me because I had prayed for her when she was ill. She wanted to make sure I slowed down enough to avoid some fall- ing rocks further up the road. “Those in heaven never forget their friends” she said. Sure enough several miles up the road we passed a rock slide, including a five foot boulder sitting in the middle of the roadway. After making sure no one was hurt we con- tinued our climb. I thanked her for protecting me and reached over to hug her but SHE VANISHED. Before leaving she had told me all about heaven. There is a heavenly version of bowling and all the greats participate. Anthony, Bomar, Day, Ladewig, Marino, Mc- Cutchen, Varipapa and Weber are better than ever. Of course former husband Don is still her favorite. The biggest sur- prise though was hearing that all competition up there is be- tween us and the angels! She said that the archangels are the best bowlers but we hold our own. Can you imagine match play between saints and an- gels, between DON CARTER and GABRIEL! Just as interesting was hearing her describe the gold- en age of American bowling. A time when bowlers devel- oped their skills without the benefit of structured coach- ing programs, video replay or YOUTUBE. A world which gave birth to unique styles and unexpected results. A world where Don Carter locked his elbow, Salvino leaped, Weber whipped his arm across his chest and WRONG FOOT LOUIE planted his right foot. EVERYONE BOWLS ALIKE TODAY. When I reached the summit I felt a slight sweet breeze and looked to my right. LaVerne was back for a moment. She winked and asked me to tell Cayce and Jim all was well. THE GHOST of LAVERNE CARTER by Frank Weiler PBA WORLD SERIES TO FEATURE ADVANCED STATISTICAL ANALYSIS The PBA will be working with two new “official statis- tics providers” during the PBA World Series of Bowling V at South Point Oct. 26-Nov. 3 to provide new levels of statisti- cal analysis of the competi- tion. Rolltech Bowling (rolltech- bowling.com) will provide ad- ditional stats, displayed on the pba.com live scoring pages, that will allow fans to track players against the field in the following categories: aver- age, strike percentage, spare percentage, split conversion percentage and open frame percentage. Lanetalk (Lanetalk.com) will provide qualifying round reports during both Xtra Frame and ESPN telecasts, including detailed information on pair equity (average scores by pair) and player performance (aver- age by pair, scoring by game that will reveal averages late in a round vs. early in the round, strike percentage on strike strings, 10th frame strike per- centage and more). “The age of technology is providing PBA fans with unprecedented data to better understand and appreciate the skills of players who compete at the highest levels of com- petition the sport,” said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. “We’re very happy to intro- duce Rolltech and Lanetalk as Official Statistics Providers to the PBA.” Look for the advanced sta- tistical information on pba. com during live scoring of the events Oct 26-31 and on Xtra- Frame.TV. SAN BERNARDINO — This is a GHOST STORY. It is A BOWLERS TALE which re-ally happened. At least I think it happened. How can anyone be sure what’s real when deal-ing with spirits?

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

RESULTS OF 17TH ANNUAL DEAF SENIOR BOWLERS OF AMERICA TOURNAMENTLAS VEGAS — The 17th annual Deaf Senior Bowlers of America (DSBA) drew 52 men aged

55 and over and 24 women aged 50 and over for their respective Singles event last October 15-17 at The Orleans Hotel and Casino Bowling Center. The Mixed Doubles had 38 pairs entered and its popular respective Qualifying and Match Plays events drew 44 men and 16 women.

The newly elected DSBA Secretary-Treasurer Ed Abakumoff, Riverside said the three days events ran smoothly with a minor mishap in the match plays. Here are the new winners of each events, 2nd and 3rd place finishers and the highlights.

LAUER-SKEDSMO CAPS WOMEN’S SINGLES, DAYTON WINS MEN’S SINGLESFrancine Lauer-Skedsmo, AZ with her 143 average and 67 per game handicap rolled scratch

games of 149-191-185 for the Women’s Singles event’s only 500 high series, 525. Her 525 plus 201 handicap for 726 total won the women’s Singles with 48 pins ahead of Carol Moers, CO. Also Lauer-Skedsmo’s 191 is the event’s high single game.

Moers, DSBA’s co-founder and retired after first 16 years as its Secretary-Treasurer, had games of 160-152+183 for 495 plus 183 handicap (61 per game for her 149 average) for 678 total for 2nd place. Third place went to the tiny 149 average Hawaiian Younisi Donegan with games of 149-158-181 for 488 plus 183 handicap for 671. The last place in this event prize money is 644 by Winifred Sain, Las Vegas.

On the men’s side, former DSBA Vice President Renwick Dayton, OR had his day, bowling over his 171 average with 202-193-198 for 593 plus his 117 handicap for 710 to capture the men’s Singles title. Californian with 150 average, William Booth tossed two over average games of 172-212 before slumping with a 134 placed 2nd with 518 plus his 180 handicap for 698.

Third place went to Dennis Kaufman, CA with over his 174 average games of 200-194-190 for 584 plus his 108 handicap for 692. The 13th and last place score in the money is 637 by William Golyer, CA.

There were four senior bowlers with over 200 average and the event’s 100% handicap from 210 made it tough for them to cash in unless they bowled big games. Two of them managed to bowl over 600, Jose Sermeno, CA with 199-219-213 for high scratch series.631 in out of money 16th place and Barry Cossman, NV with 221-203-201 for 625 for 20th place. This event’s high game 226 was made by 197 average Gorman Low, CA whose 616 total placed him in 24th.

LATE PAIRING OF WRIGHT AND GLORIA WIN MIXED DOUBLES BY ONE PINWilbur Wright, CA could not find a doubles partner when he sent in his entry to DSBA Secre-

tary-Treasurer Ed Abakumoff and there were no extra bowler . So Wright had to arrive at the bowl-ing center to find a late entry Domingo Gloria, NV being paired with him. Surprisingly it turned out that the lucky pair finished at the top of the Mixed Doubles event by one pin.

Wright with 161 average tossed over average games of 165-207-191 for 563 plus 147 handicap 710 while 148 average Gloria added 137-171-165 for 473 plus 186 handicap 659. Together their 1369 total won the DSBA Mixed Doubles event.

By a disappointed one pin, Renwick Dayton, OR after earlier winning the Singles event, almost won two events. With partner Ismael Briseno, UT rolling 165-227-174 for 566 plus 120 handicap 686, Dayton added his games of 200-160-205 for 565 plus 117 handicap 682 for their total of 1368 good for 2nd place.

Third place went to 1352 total of Carol Moers, CO and partner Lonnie Jones, Jr. CA. Moers hit 136-186-168 for 491 plus 183 handicap for 674 and Jones, Jr. helped with 142-247-208 for 597 plus 81 handicap 678. Jones. Jr. has 183 entering average.

The 9th and last place in the money score is 1316 by the duo of Linda Salcedo, CA and the petite Hawaiian Younisi Donegan. Donegan helped with 170-169-181 for 520 plus 186/703.

The event’s high scratch doubles score was 1231 by the duo of Kirby King, CA (209-197-245 for 651) and Jose Sermeno, CA (191-190-199 for 580). King had 111 handicap event high 762 and Sermeno 3 handicap 583 and their total of 1345 placed them in 5th.

Dennis Kaufman, CA tied Jones, Jr.’s 247 with his 247-170-231 for 648 plus 108 for 756 but his partner Horace Smith scored 578 with handicap and their 2334 placed in 7th. The event’s high individual game again went to Gorman Low, CA’s 248. Low’s 218-248-185 for 651 ties King’s 651 for event’s high individual series. Although Low and his partner Andy Lorenzo, CA total 1269 is out of money, their 2nd game total of Lorenzo’s 205 and Low’s 248 is the event’s high scratch doubles game 453.

Next week will feature the senior women’s and men’s respective Qualifying Round and the Match Play events.

“The World” Wins High 5 Gear PBA League Challenge to Kick Off

PBA World Series of Bowling VLAS VEGAS (Oct. 25, 2013) – “The World,” a team of seven

international stars, defeated an all-star team of American profes-sionals Friday to win the High 5 Gear PBA League Challenge: USA vs. The World, a special event that kicked off PBA World Series of Bowling V at South Point Bowling Center.

The special event was webcast live on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame.

The international team won the Challenge with a 211-183 Baker team victory to conclude the special event, earning three points for the team win and a 4-2 victory in the competition with featured a singles match, an alternate-ball doubles match and a Baker trio match.

In the team finale, Finland’s Osku Palermaa struck in the sixth frame, following a strike in the fifth frame by The World team captain, Jason Belmonte of Australia, to give his team the lead. Consecutive strikes by Venezuela’s Amleto Monacelli, England’s Dom Barrett and two more by Belmonte clinched the victory.

The USA had taken an early 2-1 lead when Chris Barnes de-feated Finland’s Mika Koivuniemi, 265-233, in the singles match and Sean Rash, Bill O’Neill and Mike Fagan won the Baker trios contest, 234-219, over an international team composed to Bel-monte, Palermaa and Monacelli. England’s Barrett and Stuart Williams defeated PBA Hall of Famers Pete Weber and Norm Duke, 257-166, in the doubles match.

The High 5 Gear PBA League Challenge: USA vs. The World was a preview for the 2014 PBA League season which gets underway on January 22 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich.

The PBA World Series officially begins when a capacity field of 240 players, representing 21 countries, bowl the Cheetah Championship qualifying and semifinal rounds Saturday. The Vi-per, Chameleon and Scorpion Championships – all named after distinct lane conditioning patterns used in the competition – will follow on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Qualify-ing will begin at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. PT each day, with the top 16 players advancing to the semifinal round at 7:30 p.m.

The top 24 players based upon combined qualifying totals from the four animal pattern championships will advance to the PBA World Championship match play finals Wednesday and Thursday. All of the preliminary rounds will be covered live on Xtra Frame, the PBA’s subscription-based online television chan-nel. A special World Series of Bowling Day Pass is available for $5 per day. Monthly and full-year subscriptions also are available for $7.99 or $64.99, respectively. PBA fans also can follow the competition at no cost by watching “live scoring” on pba.com.

The World Series of Bowling V concludes with two full days of television finals on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2-3, on special lanes installed in South Point’s Exhibition Hall B.

Doubles paid out 20 places for a total of $1370 with a low to cash score of 1402. The Semis took the floor and Billy Chao was TOP SEED with +159 with Holden Au tak-ing the second spot with +132. Holden will sit out the first round while Billy conditions himself for the title round. Top seed gets the honor of drawing for Match Game and Billy drew 144. Like last week, the score was UNMATCHED and our Match Game fund MAXED at $5,000 carries over this weekend to Oak Tree Lanes where we will have the final leg of the three HANDICAP BONUS SPECIAL events. Our optional 3-6-9 pot also carries over with Noli Angeles taking home the $50 consola-tion prize. Prize fund for 3-6-9 next week will be $800.

Cut scores for the Match Play Finals were +76 for the men and +44 for the women. Bowlers placing 10th through 16th after the first round elimi-nations and getting $100 each were Ed Abarca, Art Windsor, Thomas Licauco, Louis Ev-ans, David Godinez, Yen Lach and Bobbie McCollum. Plac-ing 6th through 9th and $105 each after the second round

eliminations were Holden Au, William Garrett, Kerry Lucka and Meng Chea. For our HORSE pick finalists, payouts were $34 for Randy Sanicolas, $37 for Sean Nguon, $58 for Anthony Ta, and Pablo Castro at $104.

In the third round, An-thony Ta downed Pablo Cas-tro 240/192 and Sean Nguon secured his win with his dou-ble in the tenth while Randy couldn’t connect. Sean fin-ished 245 against Randy’s 233. Finishing 4th and 5th respectively and taking home $110 each were Randy Sanico-las and Pablo Castro. Advanc-ing to round four for a shot at the title match were Anthony Ta and Sean Nguon. It was a close match. Funny moments broke the tension whenever Sean picks up a spare by a hair. In the end, it was the amazing 3-7-10 conversion in the 9th frame that gave Sean the edge he needed to force his oppo-nent to punch out in the last two frames. Anthony punched out on the 10th but opened his 9th. He finished 194 against Sean’s 212 and placed 3rd for $200.

Bowlmania bowler Sean Nguon faces Mou Liu bowler

Billy Chao for the title match. After a day’s worth of play, the lanes are tough and very chal-lenging. Billy failed to convert a 6-7 split in his 1st, a 4-6 split in his second, and missed a 10 pin in his 3rd frame. On the other side of the board, Sean spared on the 1st, converted a 3-10 baby split on the 2nd,then completed a 3-6-8 split con-version in the 3rd. Billy was able to double up 1n his 7th and 8th frame. He needs a punch out in the 10th to follow his spare in the 9th to force Sean to mark. No such luck as the lane gave another big split. Billy finished with a 177 game and took home $500 for 2nd place. Sean threw three more balls to finish with a 206 game and his 2nd ABTA Title. He took home the guaranteed prize fund of $1000, PLUS $1700 for the OPTIONAL Cash & Carry, PLUS $100 for

wearing his ABTA Shirt, for a total of $2800!

2X Champ Sean Nguon is from Los Angeles and he used a 15lb WHITE DOT PLASTIC BALL drilled by Ed Williamson at Bowling Square. He thanks his BOWL-MANIA family for their sup-port and friendship in and out of the lanes. He also extends his thanks to ABTA (both the tournament and staff) for pro-viding a great tournament for bowlers to go to PLUS his Ka-raoke buddies Romel, Edmond and Cezar.

Runnerup Billy Chao is from Monterey Park and he used an IQ Pearl which he drilled himself. He thanks his family, fellow MOU LIU bowlers, all the ABTA staff and our host, Forest Lanes for a great event.

Third Place Anthony Ta is from Temple City and he used his Lane#1 Stealth Bomber drilled by Billy Chao. His #1 support and inspiration is wife, Annie. He also extends his thanks to fellow Mou Liu bowlers and the hard working ABTA staff.

ABTA Bowlers took home $$Big Bucks$$ in cash and prizes this weekend! Lord Fer-guson won the new bowling ball from our sponsor, Global 900 this weekend. BURBANK — It’s been a very busy week and because of that, I always look forward to my bowling days. Bowling seems to take me out of the rat race for a time and allows me to decompress. Not only does my love of the sport en-hance this but also the pure enjoyment my fellow bowlers bring. I can only hope that you bowlers feel the same and enjoy your days/nights of bowling as much as I do. Now let us get on to the scores for last week.

The Perfect Gameby Steve Felege

interview by Carol ManciniEditor’s note: When Steve first came to California last year, I wanted to know a little bit about his background. Jet-lag made him incoherent, and as the season progressed we found other sub-jects to discuss. During his absence some of our readers asked about that, so for this interview I’m going back to our original meeting. Like you, I hate interviews so I promise to keep it brief.Carol: Steve, do you remember the first question I ever asked you?Steve: It was something like, “Did you bring chocolates?”Carol: Very funny, but no. It was, “What made you think that you were qualified to write a book about bowling?”Steve: Oh yeah, that’s right.Carol: This time I expect a straight answer!Steve: Well, I met all the criteria. I owned a pencil, some paper, and a bowling ball.Carol: That’s not much of an answer!Steve: I try to keep things simple.Carol: So I’ve noticed. My question is, “Why did you write it?”Steve: I wanted to give something back to a game that had given so much to me.Carol: You thought the bowling world needed another book?!Steve: I knew it needed this book.Carol: Really?Steve: Carol, you’ve been reading about this sport for a while. Correct?Carol: Yeah.......why?Steve: What do you read?Carol: Books, journals, newspaper clippings, you name it.Steve: You also attend seminars, meetings, get-togethers and miscellaneous “bull sessions”. Right?Carol: More than I care to remember!Steve: Before reading my book, had you ever heard about the “universal truths” of bowling? Carol: Uhhhhhhh, no.Steve: How about “bowling theory”?Carol: Uh-uh.Steve: Neither had I and that’s why I wrote this book. Those two things create a base for the teaching and development of any game, and yet for bowling, there wasn’t a single mention of them anywhere.Carol: I’m curious. If they were never recorded, where did you find them?Steve: Armed with a little science and common-sense, I went looking for them. It’s a long story. Do you want to hear it?Carol: Not really. I promised to keep this interview short, so just give me the highlights. What are the universal truths?Steve: They’re simply principles that apply to everyone once they pick up a bowling ball.Carol: And they are.......?Dean: Hey, Steve! Last week you said something about theoreti-cal physics. Do you like to talk about space/time theory?Steve: Well, sure, but.......Dean: Good, because you’re out of both! Nuck, Nuck, Nuck...Carol: I’ll take it from here, Steve.Steve: But we haven’t.......Carol: That’s it for this week’s column folks. Join us again next week when I ask Steve the question we all want answered, “What made you think you were qualified to write a book about bowl-ing?”Steve: Uh, Carol? You asked me that at the beginning of this.......mmmfff.Carol: C’mon Dean. I need some help getting him back into the broom-room!Comments or questions? Email them to us at: [email protected]

McBride’s Take Scratch Division DoublesZweig’s Take Handicap Division

by David Yamauchi

MONTCLAIR — The JAT hit the lanes for their first Adult/Junior of the season last Sunday at Bowlium. 42 bowlers took the lanes in the two divisions of doubles action.

In the handicap division, bowlers shot 5 games of individ-ual qualifying and took their total scores plus handicap. After 5, Brandon Pekins and Katelyn Corwin led the field at +120, followed by Milton and Leah Zweig at +70, Robert and Dylan Cowling at -31 and Paul Salverda and Baujee Harlan at -36. Top-4 teams went on to 5 games of Baker Match Play. In Baker, Robert and Dylan Cowling game out hot with a 204 start and finished up with a pair of 221 games to lead the field at +515 and earn a spot in the Championship Match against Milton and Leah Zweig who put together a big 185 in the last game to barely edge out Paul Salverda and Baujee Harlan +216 and +161. In the Championship Match, the two teams battled but in the end it was Milton and Leah Zweig marking their way to a 166+30.5=196.5 to 176 win and Leah Zweig’s first JAT title. Congratulations Milton and Leah!

In the Scratch Division, scores were high as the bowlers found their shots right out of the gate. Mark Dyer and Terrence Robinson led qualifying at +257 including Dyer winning back to back pots with 287-268 and Terrance finishing out with 258. Mikey Villarreal and Wesley Low Jr. were hot on their tail at +224 including Mikey’s 243-288 start and Wesley’s 264. Jerome Jordan Jr. and Joe Grondin were third at +205 and Keyon Lemus and Eric Torrance 4th at +127. Rounding out the qualifyers were Harry Wong/Bert Dominick at +117, Kevin and Ryan McBride at +52, Will Scharnow/Matthew Zweig +22 and Stevn Roderick/Brian Hernandez at +20.

Sidepot winners were Will Scharnow, Mikey Villarreal, Mark Dyer (2), and Stevn Roderick. In Baker Match-Play, the bowl-ers were shooting for the top-4 rolloff spots. Kevin and Ryan McBride jumped to the tournament lead with consistant shooting including a 258 start and a 269 finish to end at +464. Jerome Jor-dan Jr. and Joe Grondin took second seed at +439 while qualify-ing leaders Mark Dyer and Terrence Robinson held on to third at +341 and Harry Wong and Bert Dominick took the 4th spot with their 5th game 225 and the bonus at +323 just snapping Mikey Villarreal and Wesley Low Jr. at +278. In the Stepladder Rol-loffs, Mark Dyer and Terrence Robinson took out Harry Wong and Bert Dominick 186-155 to advance to meet Jerome Jordan Jr. and Joe Grondin.

In the semi-final match it was a battle as both teams were scoring but the youngsters Jordan Jr./Grondin prevailed 238-236. In the final match, it was two JAT vets vs. a JAT Alum and an up-and-comer battling at Jerome Jordan Jr./Joe Grondin met Kevin and Ryan McBride. Both teams started strong but it was the McBride team stringing late strikes for a 214-187 win and the title. It was Ryan McBride’s 4th consecutive title including three Farm Club titles and the Doubles win. Congratulations to the McBrides!

The JAT will hold its annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at SpeedZone in City of Industry. Each award winner (All-Star Team and Rookies of the Year) will receive one free ticket to the banquet. Additional tickets for parents, siblings and other JAT bowlers who would like to come out and have a great time may be available- we have already passed the deadline but please contact me and I will see what we can do. Looking forward to hitting the track at SpeedZone!

The JAT travels east to Brunswick West Covina for a rare Saturday event in preparation for the Awards Banquet Saturday night. Both divisions will be bowling a special shortened Classic Format so we can be done in time for pizza and racing! See you all on the lanes SATURDAY!

Bowling News is proud to bring you....

It is always tournament time in bowling, and many bowl-ers take part of their vacation time to participate in events near and far. The vast majority of events are classified or handicap competitions.

Classified tournaments are those that have separate divisions, based on sanctioned average, for instance, 130 and under, 131 to 140, and so on. The greatest number are handicap, and that takes a little homework.

Handicaps in bowling are designed to equalize the play-ing field by awarding pins to bowlers based on official en-tering average. In recent decades, scoring has boomed, so what used to be scratch or the base upon which handicaps are determined, has also zoomed, from 190 to 200 to as high as 230 or more.

So if the base is 230 and you average 160, you are awarded 70 pins per game if the 100 percent ratio is used.

Some tournaments use as low as 70 percent. Some tournaments have a minimum entering average so if you are lower than the minimum set, you must take the higher score as a starter as per the tournament rules.

Those are keys to any tournament and the keys as to what tournaments are best for any bowler. If you are a high average bowler you look for the events that give the least free pins and if you’re a lower average bowler you look for all the free pins you can get. Some tournaments allow so many free pins that if a low average bowler has a real hot streak, they can post scores that are impossible for a scratch bowler to attain. For instance, some bowlers can receive 240 pins in a three game set. If they roll 660 or more on their own ball, they have 900 or more, impossible for a bowler with no pin help to beat.

There are participants in all sports who look for that ex-tra edge. In bowling they are called sandbaggers. These bowlers keep their averages down on purpose so they can receive undeserved handicap pins.

All tournaments have this tricky area as to what is the best and fairest way to handicap bowlers, and the best way to control those who look for ways to beat the rules.

Tournament managers have the authority to assign an average higher than the minimum average on the entry blank and to adjust any average based on the bowler’s per-formance in the past . Tournament officials may request the complete tournament record of bowlers and prize money they have won the previous year.

Failure to comply or supplying false information can re-sult in a forfeit of entry fee and prize winnings.

If the tournament officials check out the entrants the way they should and the bowlers read the tournament rules carefully, there are few problems.

But if the rules are not enforced, too many pins are awarded to too many bowlers without checking perfor-mances, scratch bowlers are mainly overlooked and the intent is to register as many entries as possible, no matter what, there is bound to be problems. There are many tour-naments, national, state and local, that have been around for 50 to more than 100 years, only because they have adapted to changes needed, and fairness to all.

But the bottom line is that tournaments can’t survive, unless they meet the needs of you, the bowler.

DOWNEY — Seven teams went 5 and 0 on the first week of round two. “Short Oil” played TRICK OR TREAT on 12 teams. Heads were shaking all the way to the park-ing lot.

The side-pots accurately reflect the scoring — good or bad.

Game One, Steve Gaucin stole with a 223. Bobby Campagnale stepped up the pace and downed a few more pins, collecting for his 259.

Jason Buenviaje, subbing for TIFCO INDUSTRIES, picked off the big paying Game Three Pot with a 246.

The two that banked some of the Financial Advisors money were Bobby Campagnale (Double dipped that 259!) and Gabriel Martinez, 3 pins short at 256.

The dream match last week would have been SYSCO against AMATEUR BOWLERS TOUR. SYSCO racked up 2384 total pins while A.B.T. would have clobbered ‘em with their 2386! Game Three 799/793. Can you just imag-ine the 10th frame??!!

I scoured the re-caps and only came up with one lonely 702. Sub---Paul Bober almost had a nice triplicate, 235-232-235/702.

For the first week of the “Short Oil” round — 34 (close to 1/3) of the bowlers shot under 500 and one shocker 342. Guarantee he picks a few brains and picks up a new ball.

Vernon Adams is sitting on top of the average list at 238 for 24 games. Nicole VanDaniker coming into the league at 185 is leading the ladies at 208. Was nice to have Cynthia Cheesman chasing the spares.

I find this stat interesting.....SYSCO has downed a high of 21,330 pins so far this season and is sitting in eleventh place for total wins.

The teams are looking great in their 2013/2014 Ebonite League shirts. Every team a different color and sponsors name embroidered on the backs. This has GOT TO BE the best dressed, most competitive league..... on the back page of the Bowling News. Got Cha. Sack up the candy.
