ZION’S UCC OF TABORTON

We are very fortunate to have 6 great people running for council in Sand

Lake. All have been volunteers and have donated many hours to public

service. Town government, however, has become very complicated. Town

officials must now be well informed and highly skilled in many areas. It takes

time and hard work to acquire the necessary knowledge, and to build the

complex network that is essential to address a 21st century agenda.

The current town majority of Fasoldt, Kronau and Cioffi have raised the bar.

Town attorney, Russ Bennett has been actively involved and rendered

invaluable legal advice. This high quality team has attracted a group of

passionate volunteers who have responded to this exemplary leadership.

Together they are resolving issues that have plagued our town for decades

while also planning for the future. It is crucial to maintain their momentum.

Please join us in supporting FASOLDT, KRONAU and BENNETT on Nov. 5th.

Thanks to the Historic Preservation Committee and the leader-ship of Councilman Don Carpentier and Town Historian MelodyHowarth, a couple of hundred people enjoyed a wonderfulharvest festival at the VFW. We thank all the contributors, volunteers and businesses that donated so much to make thissuch a great event. The event included collections from thehistory of our community, demonstrations, great food and funfor all.We began our last meeting with a moment of silence in memoryof former Councilman John Carpenter who recently passed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. Our work continued on the 2014 budget as we looked for sav-ings and listened to requests for funding. The tax cap limits our2014 budget increase to $4,000 and our increase in property/liability insurance alone is nearly $1,000 more than that. Werecently invited our emergency services partners to make pre-sentations to the Board to advise us of upcoming needs andprogress. It is always an informative time and one where weget to thank them for all they do in our community. The Board is expected to continue work on the budget intoNovember with a public hearing held on November 7.The Board has introduced Local Law No. 1 of 2013 which wouldprovide for a Gold Star Parent tax exemption which is an op-tional and partial local tax exemption for parents of childrenkilled in service to our nation. The public hearing on this pro-posal will be held on November 14.The Board is currently advertising for volunteers to fill twovacancies on the Planning Board. If you are interested in oneof these important positions, please contact me directly assoon as possible. The Board has also heard resident requests to possibly createa peddler registration requirement for the community similar tothe one in the Village of Nassau, town of Schodack and mostother communities. This request comes out of concerns of ag-gressive salespeople at the homes of elderly residents. In lightof recent thefts, residents have expressed concern since theydo not know if a salesperson is legitimate or not. The Board isreviewing proposals for registration to provide ways to followup on inappropriate activity. There is a great deal going on inNassau. Please let me know if you would be willing to join ourprogress by serving on one of our many committees.

I wasn’t able to be at the “Meet the Candidates” night

on Tuesday and, as I didn’t know Mr. Campano, I

looked him up on the internet. I found out he has a web

page that says he is running for County Sheriff in 2015.

How could he run for Sheriff in 2015 and serve four

years on the Town Board starting in 2014? Is his

running in Sand Lake just a stepping stone? Is he

intending to serve less than a year? This does not seem

like a serious candidacy.

FILM SCREENING & DISCUSSION WITH

FILMMAKER BRUCE KENNEDY

On November 2 at 10:30 am, the RensselaerCounty Historical Society (RCHS), located at 57Second Street will host filmmaker Bruce Kennedyfor a viewing of his work-in-progress filmRighteous Rebellion,” an examination of the Anti-Rent War that once gripped upstate New York, including parts of Rensselaer County such as thetown of Greenbush.

During the 19th century, 300,000 farmers remained controlledby wealthy landowners and an archaic, 200-yer old, semi-feudalform of land and social authority. As a result, without hope ofever securing the right of ownership to the lands they workedand developed, local farmers took up the cause of resistanceagainst the 1% of their day.To tell this unique story, Mr. Kennedy has enlisted the thoughtsand commentary of 30 local historians and descendants of thosewho participated in the rebellion, ensuring that this piece oflargely forgotten history remains truly local. Rensselaer CountyHistorian Kathryn Sheehan was interviewed for the film.As a descendant of Dr. Smith Azer Boughton, aka Big Thunder,a principal leader of the rebellion, Mr. Kennedy will also sharehis family’s stories and reveal new and never before offeredinterpretations and insights into the Anti-Rent War.Admission to this event is free and refreshments will be served. For more information, call 518-272-7232 or visit the website,www.rchsonline.org

East Greenbush

Town Council

Candidates

Mike Bottillo

& Cheryl Vallee

QUALIFIED

AND

INDEPENDENT

As we approach the election for Town Council on

November 5, Cheryl and I would like to take this

opportunity to thank the residents of East Greenbush

for allowing us the time to speak with you about your

concerns and explain our qualifications and goals. As

we walked through neighborhoods over the last few

months, town residents told us of their current

disappointment with the lack of growth on the 9&20

corridor. We also heard residents speak of their desire

for more family amenities that would enhance their

quality of life and encourage more families to move to

East Greenbush. Our time speaking with you has

been invaluable and we hope that we have instilled in

you some optimism for the future of our town.

As a member of the Planning Board, I am excited to

share with you some information on upcoming projects

coming to our town. Starbucks will be occupying the

former Kentucky Fried Chicken site; the McDonalds

site on Columbia Turnpike will be the new home of

Columbia- Greene Dialysis Center. As you can see,

Planet Fitness is almost complete on the corner of

Elliot Rd. and 9&20. The Michael Road subdivision will

start with a phased-in development with the

infrastructure project beginning as soon as possible.

Additionally, the development proposed a few years

ago off Temple Lane has been purchased by a new

developer who wants to begin a phased-in

development starting with a 100 room hotel. These

projects will add to the tax base, alleviating some of

the burden on taxpayers and give us hope and

optimism for continued growth.

Having a parks and recreation system that our residents

use and are proud of is a primary goal of ours. Cheryl

and I will apply for more grants, ensure large developers

contribute their fair share to amenities and enhance

the image of our parks while not over extending the

budget. The Rails to Trails project, the Luther Road

Sidewalk Project and the planned walking path around

Hampton Manor are just a few of the upcoming

projects our town will see over the next couple of

years.

Please consider us on Election Day as we are the

only registered Independent candidates for Town

Council. We will not promise you what we cannot

deliver. We promise you that we will listen and work

hard for you on all issues that come before the Town

Council and ensure planned projects come to fruition.

Please, Vote for Mike Bottillo and Cheryl Vallee on

Row “A” Tuesday, November 5th 6am-9pm.Mike Bottillo Paid Advertisement

HEALTHY LUNCHES, HAPPY KIDDOSThe mornings of a parent with school age children is notsomething for the weak of heart. There are clothes to bepicked out, breakfasts to be served, and teeth to be brushed(and dishes, and homework, and well, I’ll just stop there). Ohyeah, and then the parent needs like five minutes to guzzledown some coffee, get out of their robe and maybe findsomething to wear that doesn’t have stains, rips or strawberryjam on it from the little one who decided to use that blouse asa napkin. After all that, packing lunches for the day is somethingwe as parents just want to keep easy and simple. Let’s graba “Lunchable” and call it a day, right? Or here’s $3, grab somelunch at school (if your school district offers healthy optionsand your child makes healthy choices, then by all means rockon and keep doing what you’re doing!) We need to realizethat what we feed our children REALLY makes a difference;from their behavior to their grades. Excess sugar, artificialcolors and flavorings and processed lunch meats with nitratescan make for a hyper, agitated, unfocused child. Don’t wewant to set our children up for success? Here are some tips toget started: first, swap out the juice box for water. Buy asmall refillable water bottle that can fit into their lunch box(this will also save money!) Second, a good ol’ PB&J is actuallya great lunch option! Just make sure the jelly is low sugar andmade with all fruit and that the classroom doesn’t have anypeanut restrictions. If it does, there are some great almondbutters and sunflower seed butters available. Some kid friendlysides are some fruit (apple, banana, grapes, kiwi), cut upveggies with dip, trail mix, yogurt or cheese. Just keep inmind the sugar content and added ingredients. Keep it lowsugar and nothing artificial. In one hour on Sunday evening, you can prep the sides, divide them into containers and everynight during the week you can assemble the lunch boxes forthe next day. This way you can still manage to salvage somesanity in the morning while knowing you are sending yourchildren off ready to do and feel their best. And yes, yourchildren’s teachers will thank you too!

EAST GREENBUSHPlease Make QUALIFICATIONS,

NOT NAME RECOGNITION,

the DECIDING FACTOR ON

ELECTION DAY

If you want qualified, professional candidatesfor Town Council, vote forMike Bottillo and CherylVallee. It’s self evidentbased on qualificationsthat only Mike and Cherylare ready for this position.I cannot find theiroppositions’ qualificationsor accomplishmentspublished anywhere.Anyone who seriouslylooks past name recognition will discover Ms.DiMartino and Ms.Matters are woefully underqualified to handle a seat on the council.

Most importantly, please remember that Ms.DiMartino and Ms. Matters’ platform has alreadybeen passed by the Democratic Majority1) Ethics Reform; Passed by Democratic Majoritywith no opposition at public hearing.2) Reduce Interfund Debt; over 1 million payed offinherited debt over the last 2 years and a debtreduction bill; Passed by Democratic Majority.3) Upgrade sewer, Democratic Majority Passed a14 million dollar bond to upgrade sewer systemthat begins construction in December.4) Independent audits of town finances; Passed abill authorizing audits for the next 3 years.

It’s clear that Ms. DiMartino and Ms. Mattersneed to pay attention to town business andrealize their entire platform is a moot pointbecause it’s already done. Voters deservehonest answers to town issues and presenting aplatform that has already been accomplished isdeceitful and non- productive.Additionally, suggesting they will work with theSupervisor Langley, who has accomplished nothingsince taking office, will be tough considering heseldom works a full day. When he is working, he iseither firing someone, driving around with hisfriends spying on DPW workers, or getting the townsued for employment discrimination.

Ms. Di Martino and Ms. Matters, it’s time to go backto the drawing board and think of what you offervoters because it’s certainly not your qualifications,or your platform.

Look at the candidates resumes and it will be clearthat the only qualified candidates for Town Councilare Bottillo and Vallee. Vote Row A all the way onTuesday, November 5th.Please visit www.egdems.com for qualifications.

NAMI HEARTS AND MINDSNAMI Rensselaer County is excited toannounce we are offering a new program!NAMI Hearts & Minds is designed to help

educate physical wellness as an approach to mental wellness. It is medically documented that having a mental illness alsodecreases life longevity. Some of the blame goes to themedication side-affects but even more blame goes to life styles. When you are depressed, it often leads to a more sedentarylife and you grab for the comfort foods to take away the pain. The nicotine in cigarettes can also be used to mask some of thesymptoms. We know that these actions also lead to heartdisease, strokes, and unfortunately, also add more mental illnesssymptoms. So, we are hoping to break the bonds to unhealthyliving for better recovery! Please join us at the Krause Centerin Troy on November 7th & 14th at 6:30 pm to learn aboutsmoking cessation, nutrition, and exercise. There is NOCHARGE for attendees. For more information, please [email protected] or call 588-6949.

STATE SPORTSMAN EDUCATION COURSESARE IN FULL SWING

On-line Registration New This YearNew York State Department of Environmental Conservation(DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens reminded all new hunters ortrappers planning to go afield this upcoming hunting andtrapping season that they must first complete a mandatoryhunter or trapper education course before they can obtainthe appropriate sporting license. Training in safe handling offirearms and hunting is a legal requirement for anyone huntingin New York.DEC works closely with thousands of dedicated volunteersstatewide to provide these training courses free of charge. However, courses often fill up quickly, so those interestedshould sign up for a class as soon as possible to be sure theycomplete it before going afield. This year, DEC is unveiling anew on-line registration system for prospective students. “This new on-line registration system will greatly improve thestudent experience as they register for education courses,”said Commissioner Martens. “Viewing a list of all availablesportsman education courses with the ability to search by dateor the student’s proximity to course locations can be easilydone. Students will now have the ability to do their registrationfrom any device – smartphone, tablet, or computer.”Since the 1960s, the number of hunters has declined about 20percent, while the incident rate has declined over 70 percent. The current 5-year-average is 4.8 incidents per 100,000hunters, compared to 19 per 100,000 hunters in the 1960s.This new web-based system has been employed with greatsuccess in many other states. It will also allow sportsmaneducation instructors to schedule courses, track studentregistration, offer email communications and provide DEC staffwith course status and results. To locate a nearby hunter or trapper education class, visitsDEC’s website and course list at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7860.html or contact a local DEC regional office. For a list of regional offices and contact information, visit http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9188.html. The website informationwill be updated regularly throughout the year. Remember tosign up early as courses fill quickly.

TO A FRIEND WHO LEFT TOO SOON

That elfin face, that impish grinI’ve seen them twice since you

Departed from the bubbling brookAnd left the speckled trout to men who fish

Less skilled for lack of your swift singingrod

They fish the banks whereonce..exuberant..you trod.

The wizened face of your old auntBrings back your face

Though sad comparison for her—Once fair-skinned, bright, gay, and young

Now paint-faced, faded, flowerless, forlorn, unsung.Your father’s face I see and think of you

A faded master—far less fair, but first to showSuch features to the sun.

His face deep-linedHis eyes now clouded blue

His once slim form, now leaden, weighted downBereft of happy, hopeful buoyant dreams of you.

Sometimes I see you in a dreamStill young and lithe and ageless as you were

When you took that sudden leaveTo venture on where are

No streams to fish nor hearts to break.Sylvia Honig

WHAT DO THE MUNICIPAL SYMBOLS OF

RENSSELAER COUNTY MEAN?

The Troy city seal has undergone somechanges over the years, but is stillsimilar to an 1860 version. The CityCode of Troy describes the Coat ofArms of the City in part ..”where onwill be shown the emblem of commerce,i.e., barrels and bales and sheaf ofwheat, the emblem of navigation, aHudson River steamboat”. …The

motto to be on a ribbon under the shield and to read “IlliumFuit Troja Est.”The Latin phrase is translated as “(Ancient) Troy is destroyed– (New) Troy exists. There apparently is no written descriptionof the seal. The seal instead has the masts from Dutch sloopsindicative of a time before there were bridges across theHudson. Newspaper records indicate that the seal was usedon police vehicles in 1867, although they were used on firetrucks much earlier. A large version of the seal can be seen onthe pedestrian overpass on 15th street connecting propertyof RPI to the main campus.~ by Marvin Bubie Marvin can be reached at Mnobooks.com
