SACRED HEART SCHOOL AND PARISH

ANNUAL GIVING TREEMembers of the Sacred HeartSchool and Parish erected thetree within the main hallway andthe children decorated it withornaments highlighting thespecific needs of many people forChristmas. Parish and schoolfamilies are asked to select oneor more of the colorful ornamentsand then shop for that item. They then wrap the gift and usethat same ornament as a gift tag, returning it under the tree. Theschool children further supportthis effort by donating an age-appropriate toy that someonetheir age would mostly likelyenjoy. Those donations will beused to “fill in the gaps” that oftenarise. Special helpers will then

separate and deliver them to their special people. It is hopedthat this little thing will be a BIG one in that person’s life.

LEGIS. ENCOURAGED by REPORTS of

PROGRESS on LOEFFEL TOXIC WASTE SITEFederal officials announced a water treatment system at the Loeffeltoxic waste site is nearing completion, and that an agreement hasbeen reached with responsible parties for continued study ofcontamination in the area.A new water treatment system for the collection and treatment ofliquid seeping from the landfill and groundwater is nearingcompletion and expected to begin operations in January 2014. Thenew treatment system will help protect local groundwater resources, and also reduce truck trips to the site, and partly alleviate localtraffic and safety concerns. The agreement for study of contamination involves General Electricand the SI Group, formerly Schenectady Chemical. The study willassess long-term options for remediation under the landfill, andreview of potential remediation of ponds and streams affected bythe contamination. GE and Schenectady Chemical are among theparties responsible for the Loeffel issue. “We are encouraged the federal government and the EnvironmentalProtection Agency are maintaining their focus on the Loeffel siteand continuing to monitor and in some cases improve clean-upefforts. Sadly, this contamination has been present for 50 years, soany progress is welcomed by residents,” said Legislator Alex Shannon, who serves as chair of the Legislature’s Environment Committee. “Our goal is still a comprehensive clean-up of this long-standingblight. We look forward to any opportunity to continue workingwith the federal government and those responsible to correct thisenvironmental problem. We want to see remediation efforts beingmoved further and faster,” added Legislator Judith Breselor, a memberof the Legislature’s Environment Committee. “Much of this progress is the result of a concerted effort by residents, local officials and county officials to keep the focus and pressure oncleaning up the Loeffel site and correcting this environmentalproblem. As legislators, we are committed to continuing thispartnership,” said Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid.

DESPERATE IN THE TOWN OF SCHODACK-PART 1

Letter to the Editor: Schodack residents are very aware of thefact that the Town of Schodack does not have enough businessrevenue to offset the cost of the Schodack schools. The schooltaxes have become so high that residents are trying to selltheir homes while the School Board grapples with finding waysto cut costs and still retain programs. Coming up with logical, reasonable, and proven-to-work ideas to prevent increasedschool taxes, limited by the cap, is challenging at best. However, bad ideas from School Board members can be deadly. Therefore, you can imagine how amazed I was to read that oneof our current School Board members is now advocating thatthe Town of Schodack resort to having a casino located withinour borders in order to increase our school funding. I reallydoubt that Paul Puccio did any research on the impact thatsuch a casino would have on our community. I would havethought that the lesson “taking money is not always as greatas it seems” would have been driven home to everyone bywhat the NYS Education Department is going through for havingtaken federal money in exchange for being the second state toalign their tests with the Common Core.Additionally, it is this same Education Department that sent meout to the western part of the state several years ago to speakin schools. As part of this tour, I was sent to the SalamancaSeneca casino area to give a presentation to their local school.Arriving during the day, it appeared to be a typical smallcommunity. However, as I entered my hotel after dinner thatnight, I was sternly warned to lock myself in my room overnightand to not come out because gamblers that lose money atcasinos have a tendency to prowl at night looking for peopleand guests to rob for their money. I can truthfully tell you thatdespite how warm and welcoming the school staff was in thatarea, I could not wait to leave a place where I now did not feelsafe.I doubt that this is what we want to happen to our community.A lot of research would have to be done before a project of thisnature could even be undertaken, not a gut response. Eventhen, I doubt that any research could provide an accuratepicture of how much of an impact would incur to the people andassets of our community by the unbridled greed of possiblegamblers. Surely, It is better to be safe than sorry; it is betterto maintain a community that is safe for residents, especiallyour children, than to have casino money.I hope that Paul and the rest of our School Board can come upwith better solutions to our financing problems than a casino inSchodack. If not, we are in even more trouble than we werebefore. ~ Diane Knight, Retired EducatorEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the

SALVATION ARMY RINGS BELLS IN

MEMORY OF CHRISTOPHER BASCOM

Columbia High School students, as they’ve donein year’s past, will be manning the SalvationArmy’s red kettles at the East Greenbush Wal-Mart on Saturday, December 14th, from 10AMto 5PM. They will be doing this in memory of oneof their own, Christopher Bascom, who was 16and a junior at the school when he was killed by

a hit and run driver in November, 2003. Christopher’s birthdaywas Dec. 1st, and this year he would have been 27. Tocommemorate his special day and the giving and compassionateperson he was, it seems appropriate to help a cause like theSalvation Army. All monies donated to the kettles at the EGlocation on Dec. 14th, as well as those that were donated onDec. 2nd when family and friends rang the bells, go not only tothe worthy cause, but they help meet the goal of $2700 set byChris’ family in honor of the age he would be. Other ways todonate to the Salvation Army in memory of Chris include mailingchecks to the Salvation Army Headquarters Troy Corps, 410River Street, Troy, NY 12180 (write in memory of Chris on thememo line of the check) and by using the Facebook line: http://www.onlineredkettle.org/ChristopherBascom. By makingdonations in memory of Christopher, two objectives will bemet: helping a good cause whose mission is to serve the needyand remembering a wonderful boy who died much too soon.

“BLUE CHRISTMAS” SERVICE

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 7:00PMFirst United Methodist Church, 1 GilliganRoad, E. Greenbush, December brings manyreminders of the wonder and happiness ofthe Christmas season. But for some,Christmas can be a painful time. It may bethe first Christmas without a loved one, the

anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity ofunemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation. We can feel very alone in the midst of all the celebrating andspending. All the reminders of the happiness of the season, remind many people of what they have lost or maybe neverhad. We need the time to acknowledge our sadness andconcern. We need to know that we are not really alone. For allthese reasons, our church offers a special “Blue Christmas”service Tuesday, December 17th, at 7:00 PM.Come that evening for a service of reflection, accepting wherewe really are, and holding out healing and hope. Join us to seethat God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness.Everyone, regardless of church background (or lack of it) iswelcome. Everyone, Unconditionally. 477-9693www.fumceg.org/
