RESPONSE to PETE STENSON’S OPEN

LETTER to the RESIDENTS of E.G.

Letter to the Editor: Yes, at the town’s organizational meetingon January 2, 2014, the new majority replaced many townemployees, including Mr. Stenson, with new appointments. Itwas at just such a meeting where Mr. Stenson, Mr. VanWormer, and many of their colleagues received their appointments whenthe Democrats were in control. Unfortunate as it may be forthose who lost their jobs, a changing of the guard is, in fact,a reality of politics at every level of government when anotherparty assumes control. The former town employees knewthat this day might come when they happily accepted theirappointments from the former Democratic majority. On November 5, 2013, the residents of East Greenbush spokeat the polls when they elected Deb DiMartino and me to thetown board. While we campaigned last year, it quickly becameapparent that many residents were extremely concerned aboutthe fiscal condition of the town, and about reports from thelocal and national media that the town of East Greenbush wascompared to the city of Detroit: both were found to be on a listof the top 10 municipalities in the country that were most atrisk of going bankrupt. Combined with our junk-bond statusand faulty inter-fund borrowing practices that had, and stillhave, the town deeply in debt, the residents delivered anastounding vote of no-confidence to the Democrats who hadbeen in power for the last 14 years. It is now time to move on, to accept the reality of the newguard, and to come together as a community to restore ourtown to sound fiscal health. The new majority, myself included,is confident that our carefully chosen appointments will do anexcellent job for the residents of East Greenbush. We areboth excited and enthusiastic about working hard in the comingmonths and years to make East Greenbush one of the premiercommunities in the Capital District in which to live and work. Please join us in helping to make our town all it can be, nowand in the future.~ Mary Ann Matters, East Greenbush Town CouncilpersonEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

AFTER THE FIRE

Open Letter:On Dec 12, 2013, we had a massive barnfire in which I lost my husband, 4 of our horsesand our 2 story barn. Just as there aren’tany words that can comfort us in thistragedy, there aren’t any words greatenough to tell all the people who took care

of us that night, the days and weeks after the fire, of thegratitude we feel. When we could not stand up, family, friends, neighbors and even people we did not know, stood up for us. Ican’t thank enough the town for their support or the firedepartments and the firemen that came to our rescue. Although,we could do nothing the next day, family, friends & horse peoplewere there rounding up my remaining horses, putting up corrals, carrying water buckets, bringing in hay, grain, halters, leadropes, blankets, shavings & even food for us etc. We will neverforget the generosity of the community, family & friends, & themembers of the Grafton Trail Riders… The amount of donationsin Keith’s name that came into the Columbia Greene HumaneSociety was overwhelming as well. As odd as it sounds, we aretruly fortunate. Thank you to all who took care of us in our timeof need. I don’t know what we would have done without you.I and my family can’t thank you enough… ~ Dolores Meissner Keith Jr. and Bob Meissner

POTATOES IN NORTH GREENBUSH

I can say with some assurance that the residents of NorthGreenbush ate lots of potatoes in 1865. How do I know? It’sfrom information found in the 1865 New York State Census.More about the potatoes claim later.People doing family research often make use of the FederalCensus begun in 1790 and occurring every 10 years. You canfind names, dates and occupations etc. in these censuses. However, I like what I call the “social detail” found in the statecensuses and especially the 1865 version.Since the Civil War had just ended, the census includes name, rank unit, term of enlistment and remarks such as wounded ordischarged. The War information also includes deaths, whetherthey were killed in battle or later died of wounds and where thesoldier is buried. Also included is information regarding marriages and deathsduring the year ending June 1, 1865. Bride and groom names, dates, ages, where they lived and religious denomination aregiven. Data concerning deaths lists name, age, date of death, country of origin and cause. Common causes include cholera, diphtheria, scarlet fever, consumption and dropsy. You haveto wonder if modern medicine could have cured many of thesediseases. If you think government collects a lot of data today, look at the1865 agriculture statistics. There are 135 different categories. Some seem relevant such as the acreage in use, the differentkind of farm animals, and crops (lots of wheat and surprisinglymany fruits and vegetables). I do quibble on why thegovernment needed to know the amount of manure producedon each farm. There are miscellaneous statistics broken down separately bywhat is generally Wynantskill and Defreestville. In the former, there were two churches: the Reformed Church and the TrueReformed Church (the name is a story for another time). Therewere two churches in Defreestville: the Reformed Dutch andthe Baptist Church.Defreestville had five inns/taverns, 1 wholesale store and fourretail stores; while Wynantskill had one retail store and onlytwo inns/taverns. I guess most of the drinking took place in thesouthern part of town. Now back to potatoes: In Wynantskill, about 10 percent of thecrops were affected by drought; while in Defreestville, “allcrops except potatoes were materially affected.”See, there’s lots of good stuff in the census.

We began 2014 with our swearing-in of town officials and ourorganizational meeting. I would like to thank all those thathave done so much and give so much to continue the progressin Nassau. If you would like to join us in our efforts, please besure to contact me. We are looking for people to serve on ourZoning Board of Appeals and our Planning Board. These aretwo important committees that greatly impact the responsibledevelopment of our community.I’m pleased to report that we concluded the 2013 fiscal year invery good shape. We continued to push all departments forsavings and we succeeded by coming in under budget for theyear. This is certainly helpful since we are experiencing sometruly crazy weather which will certainly strain our highwaybudget. On January 30, at 7:00 pm, we will be holding a public hearingon the development of a new sewer use ordinance for theBurden Lake Sewer District. In order to make this meetingmore accessible, we will be holding this hearing at the HoagsCorners Fire House. Copies of this ordinance and relevantdistrict information may be found at townofnassau.org.You may have noticed that the Loeffel Toxic Landfill has beenreceiving a great deal of news recently. This is no accident. We have been working together with community groups andrepresentatives from the village level to the United StatesSenate to push our case for a comprehensive health study ofthose impacted by this site and for a complete cleanup andremediation. Recently, these efforts have included a call toprevent any further contamination from entering the ValatieKill. I would like to thank all assisting us in this effort. Our latest successes involved urging federal and state officialsto press Vice President Joseph Biden for a complete remediationof the site during his recent visit. Due to our coalition, this callmade national news.We have made it clear to all who will listen that a comprehensivestudy of the health and environmental impacts of thisSuperfund site must be done and the EPA must make sure thattheir approved remediation activities do not further increasecontamination in communities.Fifty years of review and botched remediation are long enoughfor any community to deal with such a plague. Our fight andefforts continue.

Happy New Year! January has had a busy, but strong start. Iwould like to take a moment to thank all members of the Townstaff for their hard work and dedication throughout 2013. Wehad a positive year, and I look forward to continue that mo-mentum in the New Year. I would like to welcome DeberahDiMartino and Mary Ann Matters to the Town Board. Bothcandidates are motivated to improve the Town of EastGreenbush and to work together in accomplishing this. I lookforward to working with Deb and Mary Ann, as well as Sue andPhil.I would also like to welcome some new staff members to theTown; Anthony Corellis , the new Commissioner of Public Works;Dan Fiacco, the Deputy of Commissioner of Public Works andMelissa Nusbaum the new Secretary to the Commissioner ofPublic Works. This new team brings over 40 years of experi-ence within job site construction and general experience thatwill help advance operations of our Department of Public Works. We have a wonderful new team in Town Hall who have strongbackgrounds and experience that will benefit both the Townand the daily operations. Our main goal is to work togethertowards the common goal of reducing the Town deficit andrunning the daily operations more efficiently.Earlier this month I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony forthe new H&R Block location in the Hannaford Plaza. This is anew office and location for H&R Block, and it was an enjoyableevent. We wish them lots of success this tax season andyears to come. Over the past few months, a number of smallbusinesses have opened up throughout town like Cafecito andNishiki Sushi. This past Monday, at the SUNY East Campus, UAlbany Presi-dent Robert Jones announced a collaboration project withBioHarvest Ltd, which over the next two years could createover 60 local jobs. With the expansion of SUNY East Campusand Regeneron, along with the continued progression of theWaste Water Treatment Plant, all signs are pointing in a posi-tive direction for the Town of East Greenbush. I look forwardto delivering more news as it becomes available this year. Asalways, my door is always open.Be Well.

WEDDING INVITATIONS TIP SHEET

*Have a good idea of your potential guest list. How manyguests will be invited will determine how many invitations youwill need. Invitations vary in price, so cost may be a considerationif your guest list is extensive.*Decide on the formality of the wedding. Will you be hosting ablack tie affair, or will it be a casual gathering at the shore?Guests infer many things about the wedding from the invitations, which should match the formality of the event in style and thesentiments expressed.*Dare to be different by playing with invitation sizes and shapes.Rectangular cards are standard for wedding invitations, butyou can explore your creativity by choosing more modern, artsy invitations. Just keep in mind that cards that are not thestandard shape and size could be more costly to send. Alwayshave the entire wedding invitation weighed and priced at thepost office so you will know what the postage will cost.*Choose a legible font and text color. Your invitation may lookbeautiful, but it may prove ineffective if it is difficult to read.* Keep the invitation simple. All you need are the key pieces ofinformation, such as the “who,” “what,” “where,” and “when.”Crowding the card will take away from its aesthetic appeal. Most stationers will suggest a separate, smaller insert in thewedding invitation for the reception information and responsecard.*Do some math. It is important to know your dates so you canreceive the invitations on time, mail them out, and give guestsenough time to respond. A good rule of thumb is to mail out theinvitations at least two months before the wedding. Have anRSVP date of no more than three to four weeks before the

wedding, giving ample time tothe caterers andaccommodating anyone whoprocrastinates in sending in aresponse.*Order extra. Mistakeshappen, and you may needto send out a few extrainvitations.

As commissioner, I wasable to meet many residents that I would not have had theopportunity to meet, had I not been appointed to the position.I have spoken to many, many residents, about problems theymay have had during my 3 ½ years, doing my best to solveany problem I could. One thing I pride myself on, is the factthat I ALWAYS returned a phone call to residents who tried tocontact me, by stopping at the office or calling. I TRULY had anopen door policy. I would like to take this time to thank all ofthe taxpayers in town for allowing me to serve as commissioner, hopefully to your satisfaction.Additionally, I would like to thank the employees of The Townof East Greenbush, from the employees at Town Hall, to thePolice and Dispatchers who I had many late night conversationswith and worked closely with. Most importantly, I would like tothank the men of the various departments of the Public Works,Highway, Sewer, Water, Parks, Transfer Station andMaintenance. Not everyone knows what you men do everyday, but I always recognized your dedication and hard work. Aspecial thanks goes out to my secretary, Nanci Hicks, who wasalso let go, along with 9 others let go by the new RepublicanMajority. Finally, I would like to wish good luck to my replacements,Commissioner Anthony Corellis and Deputy Commissioner, DanFiacco. I urge you to place the safety of the taxpayers on topof your priority list.~ Dave VanWormer, Former Commissioner of Public WorksTown of East GreenbushEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

AN ASSURANCE FOR ALL SEASONSOn Sunday, January 26, 2014, the Nassau and StuyvesantReformed Churches will examine the intent of the writer ofPsalm 27 assuring us of the Lord’s protection as we come tofear our enemies. Enemies here represents emotions, trials, temptations, sorrow and trouble- anything that brings us fear.God “will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he willconceal me under the cover of his tent, he will set me highupon a rock,” says the psalmist. In the sermon titled, “AnAssurance for All Seasons,” the Reverend Edward L. VanKampen will speak to the many situations about us that causeus to fear- economic setback or loss, the future and whatchange holds for us, losing loved ones, and being separatedfrom friends; and he’ll talk about how assurance of God’s loveand care can be a stronghold for living, even in the midst oftrouble. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 am. in itschapel at 43 Church Street (route 20), one half mile east ofthe only traffic light in the village. The Stuyvesant ReformedChurch begins worship at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary, just south ofthe only caution light in the hamlet of Stuyvesant.
