Fourteen student teams from schools in Rensselaer, Columbia andGreene Counties will be advancing from the regional Odyssey ofthe Mind tournament to the state competition in Binghamton March26. They were selected from some 72 teams competing in theRegion Four Odyssey of the Mind Tournament sponsored by QuestarIII in the Rensselaer City School District on March 12.Troy High School students, competing for the first time, won firstplace in two of the contests. FOR GENET FIRST GRADER

Genet Elementary student Sarah Pettis and her first grade classwere treated to a special story time when Sarah’s father made aguest “appearance” to the class in February. Sarah’s dad, Sgt.Brandon Pettis, is serving overseas in Kuwait. Sgt. Pettis contactedSarah’s teacher, David Greene, and asked if he could provide Sarahand her class with a video of him reading a story. Mr. Greeneagreed and Pettis recorded a DVD of himself reading “The LittleEngine That Could.” Sarah anxiously awaited its arrival, but monthspassed and no video arrived. Finally, on February 14, a packagemarked “USO” showed up in Mr. Greene’s classroom. It was thevideo, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Greene played the DVD forSarah and the class, who eagerly watched as Sgt. Pettis appearedon the screen and began reading. “A little steam engine had a longtrain of cars to pull...” “All the kids eyes were glued to the video,”said Greene. “They hear Mr. Greene read all the time, but to hear asoldier read was a totally different story.”Sgt. Pettis took advantage of the USO supported United ThroughReading Military Program to create and send his video. Includedwas a copy of “The Little Engine That Could” for Sarah to takehome with the video. The program provided the DVD, book,recording equipment and shipping free of charge.”Sarah was proud of her dad and pleased to see him,” addedGreene. Despite being stationed overseas, Greene says Pettis hasremained active in his daughter’s education. Greene helps parentslike Pettis stay informed on their children’s learning through emailsand regular updates to a webpage Greene maintains on the school’swebsite. He also publishes an online newsletter for parents calledthe “Green Gazette”. Greene says having information about hisclassroom activities available online has proven valuable for parents,especially those living apart from their children. “It gives everybodyaccess to what their children are learning, whether they are acrossthe country, across the world, or across the street,” he said.

Mere moments after eliminating thedecades-old childcare program, a resource THOUSANDS ofparents and children have utilized and supported through theyears, the District Administration proposes the restoration ofthe single administrative position subject to elimination as aLevel 1 reinstatement! Add an assistant superintendentposition back before the French program, elementary teachers,librarians, Social Studies and Math teachers in the High Schooland extracurricular activities? Before keeping the buildingsand grounds available for use by the community, akaTAXPAYERS…community groups who pay for using the Districtfacilities? Then have the unmitigated gall to stick their handsout for another $700,000 for 10 new buses because theyhave 100,000 miles on some? As ridiculous as it sounds, if Ihadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.Thank goodness the Board deferred that until the fall. Talkabout being out of touch with the community AND reality!As the leaders of this school district, the top priority MUST bewhat benefits our children the most with the resources available,not 2% or 5% or 11% additional tax dollars. Don’t preachabout programs and our kids in one breath and in the next,add in an administrator and 10 new school buses! Is it REALLYall about the kids with the current administration? In response to an audit of the East Greenbush ambulancedistrict, which was conducted last year by the State Comptroller,the East Greenbush town board recently approved andsubmitted to the State Comptroller a Corrective Action Planthat includes, among other things, the appointment ofambulance commissioners. Such ambulance commissioners wouldbe responsible for day-to-day administration of the ambulancedistrict, as well as advising the town board on policy developmentand other discretionary issues related to the operation of theambulance district, including the district’s contract for ambulanceand emergency-medical service with W. F. Bruen EmergencySquad, Inc. Any East Greenbush resident who has a backgroundin the delivery of ambulance and/or emergency-medical serviceand is interested in serving as an ambulance commissioner, isurged to contact me at: [email protected]; pleaseinclude a resume.Other highlights of the Corrective Action Plan include:1. Retention of outside council to advise the town board on alllegal matters related to the administration of the ambulancedistrict;2. OF WYNANTSKILL UFSDLetter to the Editor: I attended the Wynantskill Board of Educationmeeting at Gardner-Dickinson on March 17. After reciting the Pledgeof Allegiance, “Liberty and Justice for all”, a large group ofKindergarten parents wanted “Justice”. They asked to have thepublic comments, last on the agenda, moved up so they could gethome to their children. These parents were looking for answers,why their beloved Kindergarten teacher was not in school, theydemanded to know where she was for two weeks. What happenedto her? Why wasn’t a letter sent home telling parents whathappened. The Kindergarten children were devastated (they hadsubstitute teachers, but they wanted their beloved teacher). Therumors were the teacher was sick the first week, second weekrumors the teacher had cancer, she was terminally ill, she was inthe hospital, one little girl was writing her teacher get well cardsnot knowing that her teacher wasn’t sick at all. Parents andchildren continued to be upset, some not wanting to return toschool, plus their classroom was changed around which they didnot like. Parents certainly deserved answers. The superintendentseemed to talk in circles while her lawyer, secretary and the Boardof Education took notes. It was evident to me the superintendentwas on the hot seat big time; too many unanswered questionscoming from every parent. These young parents (heroes ofeducation), which the school district and community should beproud of, continued on with questions, never letting up on thereason they were there. They did not get their answers. Theyconducted themselves in a mature, professional matter. What kindof support did the teacher get from the school’s administration,didn’t sound like any with the unanswered questions. We needmore “heroes of education” like this group of intelligent, strongbelievers who know what’s right and what’s wrong. I congratulatethese fine parents for speaking their minds and protecting theirchildren and their teacher. As one parent said, not once but twice,“the administration really dropped the ball on this one”! RETURNING TO U.S. AFTER DEPLOYMENT

Army Reserve Sgt. Stephen J. Zdunczyk is returning to the U.S.after a deployment to Iraq serving in support of Operation IraqiFreedom/New Dawn, or Operation Enduring Freedom inAfghanistan and the Southwest Asia Theater of Operations.The soldiers return to Joint Base Dix-McGuire-Lakehurst, N.J., fordebriefing, evaluations and out-processing procedures beforereturning to their regularly assigned Army Reserve or NationalGuard units. While deployed, Zdunczyk was awarded the ArmyCommendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. Thesergeant, a company intelligence supervisor with five years ofmilitary service, is regularly assigned to the 770th Engineer Company,based out of Penn Yan, N.J. Zdunczyk graduated in 1986 fromColumbia High School, East Greenbush, N.Y., and received abachelor’s degree in 1990 from the State University of New YorkCollege at Brockport. He earned a master’s degree in 2005 fromRoberts Wesleyan College, Rochester, N.Y.

Greetings and best wishes to everyone in the City of Rensselaer.As Rensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I amhappy to report to you on the actions taken by the RensselaerCounty Legislature at our March 8, 2011 meeting.Along with the meeting, I joined several dozen residents onMarch 14 at a public hearing regarding a proposed asphaltproduction plant at the Port of Rensselaer. Residents hadconcerns regarding noise, traffic and emissions from the siteand expressed their feelings to city residents. I have alsoexpressed my concerns regarding the proposed asphalt plant,and the potential impacts on nearby neighborhoods. Inparticular, the potential impacts on the Fort Crailo neighborhoodand areas in East Greenbush would be considerable.The city should ensure that all residents have the opportunityto make comments on this proposed project. I believe furtherpublic meetings on the topic would be useful and want to helpensure a complete review of all issues brought forward byresidents related to the project.At the March 8 meeting, County Executive Kathleen Jiminodelivered her annual State of the County address. The CountyExecutive detailed her concerns with rising state and federalmandates and the ongoing efforts to reform mandates. TheLegislature adopted a new series of resolutions, including onecalling for the federal government to allow counties to choosewhich non-mandated Medicaid services can be provided.The Legislature has worked hard to reduce costs in recognitionof the tough economic times. The Legislature supervised a re-bid of the county insurance contract, which will save the county$900,000 over the next three years. There was also a savingsin the legislative offices, totaling $130,000 in 2010 and $160,000in 2009.The recent increases in gasoline prices have hurt working familiesand small businesses. We asked the State Attorney General toreview the recent increases in gasoline prices and take steps toprotect residents. Such reviews can make a difference inprotecting against future price increases, especially as weapproach the busy summer vacation months.The next regular monthly meeting of the Rensselaer CountyLegislature is Tuesday, April 12, 2011. The Town Board hired Tony Germano as part-time Comptroller.He has extensive experience in town government including astint as Town Manager of Glenville. The transition has beensmooth as he rolls up his sleeves and continues the work ofbringing town financial records fully up-to-date.The Brookside Avenue meeting provided residents with a com-prehensive view of what will be done there. The bridge will bewidened and there will be sidewalks on both sides of it. Therewill also be a sidewalk on the St. Jude’s side of Brookside ex-tending from Whiteview Avenue to Main Avenue. There weremany concerns expressed, especially relating to driveway ac-cess immediately around the bridge. The engineers explainedthat they will work with affected residents to ensure safe ac-cess. They also indicated that they will have to “rent” some oftheir property during the time of construction so that they canmaneuver easily and park vehicles. They assured the resi-dents that the property would be returned to its original stateor better and that they will pay rent for its use. The onesurprising outcome is that unless working through Governmentred tape approvals is quicker than expected, construction willbe next spring not this one. The good news is that the Statehas kicked in additional financial aid, in addition to the Federalaid, leaving the town with only a 5% match on all phases.NYISO has moved into the Phoenix Life building and is movingforward with expansion of the facilities. They are the peoplewho control the electrical grid for the State. We are pleasedthey decided to move to our community.I hope that you will attend Board meetings the 2nd and 4thThursdays of each month. AP SCHOOL TAXES…WHAT NEXT?

Letter to the Editor: At recent school board meetings, we haveheard from dozens of teachers and students who are telling uswhat we already know. We have great schools, dedicatedteachers and talented children. The problem is math.The state will continue to cut education aid to achieve“sustainable levels”. Our governor like many others does notbelieve our state can afford to fund schools at our currentlevels, so they are pulling back through Gap EliminationAdjustments; which if passed in the current budget, will continuefor years to come. Right now, the governor has alreadyproposed cuts for the 2012-2013 school years, which couldmean another $3.5 million out of our budget on top of the $4.7million for next year. What that would mean is that next March,we will be right where we are now; because a 2% property taxcap will add less that $600,000 to the budget which is hardlyenough to offset millions in cuts. Meanwhile, our personneland benefit costs continue to rise. Salaries, benefits andpensions make up 80% of the school budget, sadly staffreductions are inevitable. The math cannot and will not add up.We have spent too much and we are now paying for it.It’s no longer a revenue problem. It’s a spending problem. Weneed to find a way to make a $55 million budget work. We needto make fair and equitable cuts across all lines and departments.Any discretionary spending and overtime needs to stopimmediately. We need to stop the partisan bickering and worktogether to get spending under control. The board needs tothink long term regarding budget cuts. Go towww.aptaxpayers.com and give us your ideas. In an effort to recognize outstanding achievements of our students, Maple Hill High School presentseach month a Student of the Month Award. Students may be nominated for this award by any staffmember, a representative of a community organization, a parent or another student. Tennis all star, Bo Cardish isthis week’s scholar athlete. Bohas been playing on the boy’svarsity tennis team since hewas a sophomore. Bo was 4thsingles two years ago and thenmoved up to 2nd singles lastyear. The team has not de-cided positions yet, but hope-fully Cardish will reach num-ber 1 this year. Aside fromtennis, Bo enjoys playingFrisbee, Skiing, Ping-Pong,playing the valve trombone,and playing video games. Inhis busy schedule, Cardishmanages to spend time withhis friends and maintain a 96.02 grade point average. This yearBo is taking courses such as: PIG/Economics, Wind Ensemble,Physics, Detective Literature, Cinema and Literature, Calculus,Jazz Band and Spanish 5. Bo has been accepted to Marist, RIT,and SUNY Brockport. Next year Bo will be studying Biology andhopefully furthering his tennis career. LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENTThe College of St. Rose is hosting the Northeast CoalitionBasketball League’s Championship game on March 31st, at 6:30PM.The following schools will be competing in the tournament:Lasalle School, Berkshire Farms, Troy YMCA, Vanderheyden,and Rensselaer Boys and Girls Club.The Northeast Coalition Basketball League is made up of severalChapter 853 schools and community programs for boys andgirls ages 14-18. The league formed at the beginning ofDecember 2010 and is ending the basketball season with atournament. Each participant will receive a tournament t-shirtand medal with trophies for each placing team.The league was formed to help provide behavioral incentivesfor the youth enrolled in Chapter 853 schools. Youth in theseprograms tend to suffer from low self-esteem and being involvedin a school sports team has instilled a sense of pride andbelonging.
