It’s been an unbe- lievable 48 hours. “I started this quest 27 years ago. I’ve always been kind of a late bloomer, but if I put the time and effort into it, I can usually get to where I want to go.” Van Hees got his title after surviving a 209-191 battle with Lonnie Walic- zek of Wichita, Kan., in the semifinal round, and a couple of bad frames in the title match after building a nearly insurmountable lead. Sterner won his semi- final match by striking on eight of his first nine shots to run away from PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J., 257-174. He led Waliczek by 24 pins after seven frames before leaving the 4-6-7- 9-10 “Greek church” and opening in the ninth frame. When Waliczek was un- able to strike to close the gap, Van Hees threw three strikes in his 10th frame to seal a trip to the cham- pionship match where he started with three spares and a string of four strikes to build a 49-pin lead over Sterner. Van Hees left a 7-10 split in the eighth frame and failed to convert the 2-4-5-8 in the ninth, but Sterner wasn’t able to close the gap. “The guys told me it was going to go really fast, and I remember looking up and it was the eighth frame,” Van Hees said. “Against Jason, I threw four really good shots in the middle when I needed them, and thankfully that was enough. Jason left three ringing 10 pins that made a big differ- ence, but sometimes you get breaks and sometimes not. I’ve been on both sides. “It’s destiny,” he added. “Sometimes you can’t out- bowl destiny. I was hoping today would be my day, and fortunately it was.” PBA World Series cov- erage on ESPN continues with the stepladder finals of the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship presented by Storm next Sunday at 1 p.m. EST. Finalists include Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., and Australia’s Jason Belmonte meeting PBA Tour rookie Matt McNiel of Prior Lake, Minn., and Anthony Pepe of Elmhurst, N.Y., in the first Baker format match. The win- ning team will bowl Josh Blanchard of Phoenix and Andres Gomez of Colom- bia in match two. That win- ner faces Finland’s Osku Palermaa and England’s Dom Barrett in the semifi- nal match. The winner will bowl for the title against top qualifiers Connor Pick- ford of Charlotte, N.C., and 18-year-old two-handed rookie Anthony Simonsen of Princeton, Texas. LAS VEGAS - My friend Fred Kouri contacted me today to say that our friend Leon Dent passed away last Monday, a few days before his 79th birthday. Leon was a friend and mentor to many. He was a great guy to be around and will be re- membered for a long time. I first met Leon some twenty years ago at a Su- per Senior Tour (SST) event and always enjoyed our times together chat- ting about bowling, mutual friends and local events. Dent was a big PBA fan and we always had a lot to talk about during the pro season. Leon was a great bowl- er. Over the years he won numerous SST and West Coast Senior Tour (WCST) titles. He was a Citrus Belt Senior Masters Champion and was a threat to win any tournament he entered. Un- til recently, when age and injuries hampered him, Le- on’s form was smooth and effortless. He was a stroker who reminded local fans of LEON DENT - Great Bowler, Better Person.... Passes by Frank Weiler Earl Anthony. Quite a com- pliment for any bowler. For the score of years I knew Leon he was a 200 plus bowler. Most of those years he booked in the 220s and 230s. He scored nu- merous perfect 300s and 800s. He had a talent for scoring and winning. More important though is the fact that Leon was a great person. With me he was always cool, calm and collected. A quite, humble man who always respected others. He always gave me a big smile whenever we met and a wink and bigger smile to my wife. He was a consummate gentleman. Leon was very intel- ligent. He observed the world around him with a keen eye for detail. Many times he pointed out things about people and places that went unnoticed by myself. I learned to al- ways take note of his obser- vations. Leon Dent was all class and will be missed by me and the bowling world. BOWLING NEWSPage 2 January 14, 2016

Take-your-breath-away moments.Bowlers often experience these special events when they produce results that few believe were possible. These feats could be remembered for minutes or months. Or years or decades. It all depends on how memorable

they are.And that’s what makes bowling so special. Bowling is filled with special moments, which include highlight games or highlight series that are unforgettable.

Each week bowlers are hopeful they can produce take-your-breath-away moments. Typically, they don’t come. But just when bowlers least expect it – poof. Something magical appears. They find themselves in a “zone” and can’t

miss. The rhythm is there and everything is in synch. Best of all, the pins are obliging. Those seven and 10 pins that wiggle actually fall. Messenger pins come from no-

where to make improbable knockdowns. It happens. And that’s what makes

bowling so special. That’s because one doesn’t have to be Pete Weber or Jason Belmonte or Kelly Kulick to do something extraor-dinary. For one game – or one series – one can bowl just as well as Weber, Bel-monte and Kulick. Or even better.

It can be a mystery how it happens. But it’s fun when it does

It’s also nice when a reporter documents these feats so the stories can be passed around the so-cial media loop and seen by dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of friends and family.

There were two take-your-breath-away bowling moments last month – both from out of state. They both eclipsed United States Bowling Congress records.

The reaction from the principals was as expected – it was, “Wow. Look what I did. And what a great feeling it is.”Chuck Foudray of Green Bay, Wis., carved out his take-your-breath-away moment by bowling an 810 series with

games of 254, 278 and 278. Foudray, at 84 years, 3 months and 28 days, was the oldest bowler to roll an 800 series and he did it in the Manhattan Fun League at Manhattan Lanes in De Pere, Wis.

Foudray had bowled one previous USBC-certified 800 – that coming in 2010 with an 815 series. Foudray was ecstatic about his record-breaking effort. It was, after all, a take-your-breath-away moment in the life

of Chuck Foudray.Said Foudray: “This is something I never expected to do, but it was one of those days where everything just went

right. I had 532 after two games and really just wanted to shoot 700. Getting to 800 never was a thought, and I don’t think anyone even realized it was happening.”

And he added: “I’m still trying to get used to the idea of being a record holder. I was as amazed as anyone else. I’ve been bowling well this year, and that’s my main goal when I go out there. I’m definitely not out to break any records, which makes this even better.”

Foudray shared the spotlight last month with three bowlers who combined to set a USBC record for a team score for one game while competing at Candlelite Bowl in Bridgeport, Mich. The team of Bobby Sanch, Brian McMahon and Steve Novak rolled games of 300, 299 and 300 for an amazing 899 score.

That one-game total broke the previous mark of 897.Novak, like Foudray, was quite touched. It was probably a once-in-a-lifetime event and Novak knew it. “This definitely by far is the best accomplishment I’ve been a part of in a league setting, and it was a lot of fun. The

whole league stopped and watched our 10th frame, and that was really cool,” he said. “Any of us could shoot 300 on a given night, but for all of us to have a chance at the same time was something

we’ve never experienced. Even though we didn’t get the 900, we did do something that’s never been done, and that’s special.”

Those special moments appear in the L.A. area from time to time. And there have been many of them. Perhaps my favorite emotional moment in my five years as a bowling reporter took place Oct. 13, 2014 at Winnetka Bowl.

A father and a son turned in a feat that sent a buzz racing through the entire Los Angeles area. Johnnie Englehart, a superstar bowler, and his up-and-coming son, Scott, both knocked out 300 games and an 800 series on the same night at the same bowling center. They were on different teams – bowling eight lanes away.

If this wasn’t special enough, it was Scott’s first 300 game and his first 800 series. And Scott put the exclamation mark on his night with a Brooklyn strike on his last shot to claim both the 300 and the 800 (802: 245, 257, 300). It was pandemonium when Scott’s last shot knocked down all the pins. Johnnie had already finished with an 805 series with games of 300, 237 and 268.

USBC spokesman Terry Bigham said he could not find any instances of a father and son both pulling off a 300 and 800 on the same night at the same bowling center. “Exceptional,” is how he put it.

For Johnnie, it was a take-your-breath-away moment that literally took his breath away. Johnnie, seemingly never at a loss for words, was left somewhat speechless after it all happened. “This will stay with me a long time – only because of my son. Words can’t describe it,” he said.

For Johnnie, who has accrued dozens of good friends through the years because of his classy persona, it was his 63rd perfect game and 66th 800 series.

But those personal achievements paled to what really meant something to him. It was watching his son put the finish-ing touches on an unbelievable night with a clutch, so-memorable ending.

Said Johnnie: “As a parent, that’s one of the things you live for. It was great to be part of it.”Yes, this was definitely a great take-your-breath-away moment in the world of bowling. Difficult to find anything

better.

Johnnie and Scott Englehart racked up a memorable feat in October 2014. They each racked up a 300 game and 800 series on the same night and at the same bowling center. It was the first 300 and 800 series for Scott, who provided a climactic finish.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

DEAF TRAVEL BOWLERS FINDS COVINA BOWL TOUGH EXCEPT NATHAN CALDWELL

COVINA — Southern California Deaf Traveling League had a bad start of the new year at Covina Lanes as the league averaged a poor 152 per bowler there. Only one bowler, Nathan Caldwell with 142 average exceeded well there, rolling 164 pins for four games way over his average in each game with 190-184-190-168 for a 732 series.

Nathan’s heroics along with teammates Jim Mohr’s 571 and Ed Abakumoff’s 728 helped their Riverside team to the only 2031 team series of the day. Only the league’s top bowler with 211 average Darrell Stogryn did better that day with a 772 series than Nathan to lead the league’s honor roll of four bowlers. Darrell struggled that day with games of 191-181-192- 208. The list with Nathan’s 732 in second and followed with Abakumoff’s 728 (144-185-208-191) and Bob Jones’ 724 (181-201-139-203).

At Covina each team matches happened to be close with bottom three teams winning over the top 3 teams that put all 6 teams closer in the standings. The only change in the positions was third place Mid City losing to 4th place Ana-heim 12-8 resulting in their exchange of places. League leader Eagle Rock retained first place although losing 12-8 to 6th place Chino Hills. Likewise for 2nd place Jones’ S F Valley losing 13-7 to 5th place Abakumoff’s Riverside, each retaining their places..

As of now Eagle Rock is 4.5 points ahead of S F Valley, Anaheim is 1.5 points behind S F Valley, Mid City is just one point behind Anaheim, Riverside is 2 points back of Mid City and 4 ahead of 6th place Chino Hills.

The league thanks Covina Lanes for the tough expe-rience and will move on to Keystone Lanes on Sunday January24th with bowling at 1:00 PM.

PALMDALE — Ashley Dunn averaged 207.23 for 30 games across 5 different WTBA Sport conditions during the 2016 US Ama-teur Championships/Team USA Trials held last week at the Gold Coast Bowl-ing Center, Las Vegas, NV. The tournament consisted of five 6 game blocks each on a different WTBA Sport Pattern. Ashley’s scores were good enough to earn her a selection to the 2016 Junior Team USA squad having placed 5th among all Juniors. Ashley also placed 7th in the USBC US Amateur Champion-ships and 15th overall in the Team USA Trials from a field of 109 Professional, Adult, and top Juniors from across the country.

JAT Sport Juniors Recapby David Schiada

NORWALK — The JAT Sport Juniors wasted no time jumping back into the com-petitive spirit last Saturday at Keystone Lanes. First round winner Julian Zavala was his usual steady self, leading the way with a 692 series for four games. However, the battle for the first place really heated up among the top three bowlers in the second round. Leader Solomon Salama rolled the high game of the week, a 203, on his way to a 673 series. Solomon will have to wait and see if that is enough to top Nick Caner who needs to make up his games. Austin Sugarman, 3 points behind Solomon, and David Schneider, 4.5 points behind, took all 5 points in their respective matches, making their case to take over the top spot. Kylie Shishima led the girls with a 663 including a 198 game and Alex Miller shot his high game for the season with 202 on his way to a 668 series.

In Sunday’s JAT Adult/Member tournament at Keystone Lanes Solomon teamed up with Kevin Valmonte to capture the scratch division. The tournament had an outstanding turnout with a 104 bowlers and awarded $1,750 in scholarships and gift cards.

Upcoming Tournaments: January 23-24 – JBT Surf Bowl (Oceanside) and Vista En-tertainment Center (Vista); January 31 – JAT Regular Event at Harley’s Valley Bowl (Simi Valley). JAT Sport is a league for advanced juniors who are serious about competi-tive bowling. The league runs every Saturday starting at noon at bowlers have an oppor-tunity to earn scholarship awards and compete in tournaments, including the 2016 Junior Gold Championships to be held July 16-22 in Indianapolis, Indiana If you are interested in joining, please contact Armando Zavala at (562) 896-4467 or join us Keystone Lanes on Saturday at noon.

Catamisan is the Champ in Super Performance at La Habra “300” BowlFreddie Catamisan found the line to say the least, as he led the semifinals with a big +199 to be top seed and bowl for the title. (L-R) Ed Saleh of La Habra 300 Bowl, Analiza Angoncillo, ABTA Director, Ramon Alliman 3rd $200, Ben Bagoisan 4th, Joevin Bolanos runner-up $500, Champiopn Freddie Catamisan $2,600, Bob Smith ABTA Tournament Director and Deborah Sanders ABTA Director.

LA HABRA — Long-time ABTA member Fred-die Catamisan won his 4th ABTA title in fine style from the top seeded posi-tion, downing a hot shooter Joevin Bolanos in the title game to take home a nice $2,500 top prize.

The cut scores were much lower there this time. Men +64 and Ladies +9, and super Seniors added were Art Windsor +40, William Ele +32 and Joyce Charles for the Ladies +32. 37 bowlers advanced to the Semis in hopes of making the top 16 single elims.

Ge Ge Gabriel, Michael Morgan, Marina Suos, and Kmel Cunanan $110. One a step higher in 4th and 5th were Ben Bagaoisan, and Bill Warren $125.

In the Semi-Final match it was now a hot Ramon Alliiman vs Joevin Bolanos for the right to meet Cat-amisan for the title. Another close match. A split in the first frame and a missed 10 pin plagued Ramon and Joevin with only one open wins this match 216-203 with Handicap. Ramon is 3rd, bowled very well and cashed in at $200 with Mr. Bolanos on to bowl Freddie for the title.

The title game took place on lanes 15-16, Fred-die elected to have Joevin lead off and he did, with a strike.

Freddie then spared and chopped a spare, as did Jo-evin. Split on 2 and open on 3. He then he spared but Freddie found his composure with a strong three bagger and after five frames led by 34 pins. Jo-evin struggling with 7 and spare and the strikes in frames 7-8-9-10. Freddie with added pressure, spare, then another 3 bagger 7-8-9 frames and wins in a 224/251 to Joevin 198 /238. The title went to Freddie, the pride of Lawndale. He took home $2,500 with the bonuses. He bowled well and deserved the win. Nice bowling by one of the nic-est men in the ABTA.

Joevin bowled well and almost got another title. This man has been with us over 20 years. Also a nice man. He came close at La

Habra. Nice bowling Jo-evin.

Ramon Alliman in 3rd really did well at La Habra. Many thought he may win the event after he won his first 3 matches. Great bowl-ing by a very nice man.

Freddie Catamisan hails from Lawndale, married to Teresa with 4 kids, Katrina, Kassandra, Kristopher, and Karinne. He used a Storm drilled by ABTA member Ben Mach at Westminster Lanes.

Joevin Bolanos is single and used a Nano drilled by Barry Asher.

Ramon Alliman is from Long Beach, married to

Jackie with a 3 year old fu-ture ABTA member, their son Dante. He also had Ben Mach drill his Ebonite ball.

It is nice to return to La Habra “300”. Great place there and BEST Chinese food around in the cafe. They are great. We will re-turn for sure.

This week we return to COVINA BOWL, a great place. The Center is ac-cessed from either 10, or 210 Freeways. See our re-lated story for info. The phone there is 626-339-1287. Address, 1070 San Bernardino Blvd., Covina, CA .

nice to have the new mem-bers join us.

SHAWNEE, OK — PBA Hall of Famer Carmen Salvino, who celebrated his 82nd birthday on Nov. 23, is among the early entries in the FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions. Upon throwing his first ball in competition, Salvino, who finished third in the inaugural Tournament of Champions in Indianapolis in 1962 (that’s 54 years ago), will improve upon his own record as the oldest player to bowl in a PBA Tour event. The native Chicagoan bowled in the 50th anniversary Barbasol PBA TOC in 2015 in In-dianapolis at the age of 81.

Salvino is one of seven PBA Hall of Famers already entered. Others include Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J.; Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla.; Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla.; Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela; Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., and Walter Ray Williams Jr., Oxford, Fla.

TOC week officially gets underway on Monday, Feb. 1, with the PBA Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremo-nies at 6 p.m. at the Grand Casino Resort & Hotel when long-time ESPN announcer Denny Schreiner, former PBA South Region tournament manager Harry O’Neale and PBA50 Tour star Pete Couture will be honored.

CARMEN SALVINO TO IMPROVE ON HIS OWN RECORD IN 2016 FIRELAKE TOC

While official voting is underway among PBA members and veteran members of the bowling news media, PBA fans are invited to express their views about who you think should be selected as 2015 Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year and/or 2015 Harry Golden PBA Rookie of the Year? Check out the official end-of-season statistics for the 10 Player of the Year and five Rookie of the Year candidates (see accompanying statistics chart), and express your thoughts on PBA’s official Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ProfessionalBowlersAssociation/?fref=ts) and/or Twitter (https://twitter.com/PBATour) pages.

The winners will be announced live on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. EST. Winners will receive their awards during a live Xtra Frame videocast from the PBA Hall of Fame ceremonies on Monday evening, Feb. 1, from the Grand Casino Hotel & Resort in Shawnee, Okla.

It was little more than two years ago that Professional Bowlers Assn. stalwart Chris Barnes conducted a grueling six-hour clinic at Corbin Bowl in Tarzana.

Barnes was joined by Mark Baker, who thrived on the PBA Tour in the 1980s and is now thriving as a much-respected bowling coach.

The two provided a potent combination of teachings for the eager students at the San Fernando Valley clinic.

As for Barnes, he has won the U.S. Open, PBA Tour-nament of Champions and PBA World Championship to become the sixth bowler to win the Triple Crown.

He was selected as the PBA player of the year for the 2007-2008 season and has bowled as the franchise play-er for the local Silver Lake (Calif.) Atom Splitters in the PBA League. Barnes, a Double Oak, Tex., resident, led the Atom Splitters to the league title for the second straight season last year in the Elias Cup finals.

He has earned more than two million dollars on the PBA Tour.

One lesson that Barnes imparted at Corbin Bowl left an indelible impression on Siena Cawelti, who was attending the clinic with 15 others. It’s worth reciting as possibly one of the most important bowling tips ever.

Recalled Siena shortly after the conclusion of the clin-ic: “One of the things that stuck in my mind is what Chris Barnes said – ‘You can throw a bad shot but don’t throw the same bad shot from the same place. Throw the same bad shot from a different spot on the lane.’ ’’

Simple advice. Try it and see if it works.

Here’s the First Official L.A. Bowling Quizby Fred Eisenhammer

Los Angeles may not be the capital of the bowling world, but for many, it’s the center of their bowling universe. So in keeping with that L.A.- doesn’t-get-the-respect-it-deserves theme, we’re dedicating a bowling quiz to Los Angeles and its many talented players. To get in the mood of taking the first official Los Angeles Bowling Quiz, here’s some bowling humor:

Question: Why are football players not allowed in bowling centers? Answer: After getting a strike, they spike the ball.Question: What is the difference between Barry Zito and Walter Ray Williams Jr.? Answer: Walter Ray knows how to throw a strike.

Where is he now??Riley Sullivan bowled in the Forest Lanes juniors pro-

gram from 2010 -2014, from 7th grade thru his junior year in high school.

He worked his way up to a 177 average and had a ca-reer high game of 286. He competed in the Pepsi Chal-lenge and the State Championships three times and won scholarship money on two occasions.

Riley graduated from El Toro High School in 2015 with a Grade Point Average of 4.2. He was accepted into the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University where he is currently finishing his first semester as a Business major.

Thanks to Forest Lanes and the coaching of Treesa Spencer, Chris Shiroma, and Dave Jacques, Riley was able to use his scholarship winnings from his bowling tourna-ments to pay for his textbooks for the first semester. He still enjoys the challenge of bowling whenever he gets the chance and he dragged four of his favorite bowling balls out to ASU.

He plans to start bowling during second semester now that he has settled in with the possibility of competing for a spot on their intercollegiate bowling team. Riley would like to thank everyone involved with the junior program at Forest Lanes over the years for helping him discover and develop this unique talent!

Editors Note: Hundreds of Junior Bowlers have ben-efited from scholarship dollars earned while competing at the junior level. Check your Junior Bowlers’ bank account and how to activate it! Lots of $$$ available and colleges with bowling programs.

DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!

DOWNEY — The Brunswick Invitational hit the lanes for Week 4 of the third round and as always though the pattern played tough scoring crept up as bowlers adjusted their angles and equipment to match up better to the 46’ of oil.

In the “A” match, Linder’s Insurance made a run to try and continue their winning putting up their 13-2 record against DV8 who took 4 to stay within a game going into today. DV8 kept it simple and around the pocket and with Linder’s strug-gling took all 5 points to jump into the league league. Scott Poddig whacked them for 640 to lead DV8 while Kurt Arakaki paced Linder’s with a 591 set.

In the “B” match, Forest Lanes pocketed 4 wins last week to jump to third to match up against J.A.T. who was only able to take one point the last week. Forest snuck out game 1 by 4 pins but came back big in the second game. J.A.T. came back strong the third game for the win but it wasn’t enough for totals. Gip Lentine paced Forest with 577 while DeeRonn Booker came back home to pace J.A.T. once again with a 561 set.

Relax-Release-Repeat swept five points last week to jump up to 5th and met Alhambra Coin Center whose 4 wins last week bumped them to 9-6. Alhambra booked another 4 wins taking games one and two and cruising to win totals and four points. Doug Kempt led Alhambra Coin Center with a 606 set while Vernon Adams was solid with a 658 set for the one win.

Cook’s Bowling Supply only got one from DV8 last week but stayed within 4 points of the lead meeting up with first-round winners Professional Approach. Professional Approach was back in form as they cruised to a sweep led by Billy Myers Jr. with a huge 670 set. Mikey Villarreal was high for Cook’s with a 598 set.

Sysco dropped to 9th after a 1-4 loss to Forest Lanes meet-ing up with Keystone Lanes; both teams at 8-7. Keystone started out strong but had to hold on for the 4-1 win and totals as Sysco took game three by 57. Gabriel Martinez led Sysco with a 601 set while Jared Lawrence helped Keystone to their wins with his 556.

Erickson Foods took 3 to move up to 11th at 8-7 match-ing up with Wowo’s Smokin’ Hot BBQ at 7-8. Wowo’s swept through Erickson led by Ryan Cunningham’s 585 set while Matt Garcia put up 581 in the sweep.

GJC Janitorial swept 5 points last week to move up to 13th and faced second-round winners Don Julio Tequila who dropped after last week’s one-win effort. The tequila boys started off strong taking games one and two but barely dropped game three by 2 sticks for the 4-1 win. Buddy Lucas led Don Julio with a 567 set while Mike Jennings’ 566 helped GJC with their one win.

Pino’s Pizza and Los Altos Trophies matched up their 6-9 records in the 15 vs. 16th place matchup. Los Altos came up big games one and three but Pino’s came back with a big game 2 to make totals interesting, but fell 4-1 in the end. Ramon Torres led Pino’s to their one point with a 613 set while Lee Liu’s 627 was tops for Los Altos.

Ketel One Vodka was swept to 17th last week while Herzog Insurance’s one win put them a 5-10. Ketel One swept right through Herzog who couldn’t manage to keep up with Eddie VanDaniker’s 636 and Bobby Hornacek’s 614 sets. Kevin Ga-gnon was high for Herzog with a 570 set.

Threadworks added two points last week but remained in the final match bowling against Creamation Centers of CA who were trying to chalk up their first point of the round. Super-sub Spanky Rosales’ 619 set helped Threadworks take 4 of 5 for the night while Andre Pitchford helped Cremation centers take a point with a 573 set.

Sidepots went to Sam Hitchcock- 244 and Eddie VanDani-ker- 227 for $72 each while the third-game superpot was a tie between Mikey Villarreal- 233 and Vernon Adams- 233 for $105 each. The second-game Financial Advisor’s pot was pocketed by Billy Myers Jr.- 256 for $220 and Matt Schermer-horn- 236 second for $100.

Come on down to Del Rio Monday nights at 8:30 and see the best scratch league in Southern California take the lanes!
