Oatlands Junior School ~ Friday Newsletter

5th July 2018

Dear Parents / Carers

Through Primary Proposal - Update

As you know, we had been hoping to submit the business case document to the Regional

Schools Commissioner (RSC) by the end of June. However, there will be a delay in

submitting it. The RSC has been having direct discussions with the Causeway Trust

(Oatlands Infant School is part of that Trust) and NYCC and also internal discussions. They have asked us to be patient and to delay submitting the business case

until those discussions are concluded. We hope they will be concluded shortly and I will

update you again as soon as I hear. Once the business case has been submitted we will

then arrange a meeting for parents of children currently at the school and those joining us

in September to answer any questions about the business case document and the

subsequent process involved.

It has always been our intention to publish a copy of the business case document on the

school’s website after it has been submitted to the RSC and that remains the

position. We also intended to confirm in the business case document the number of

responses received during the consultation that were ‘for’ or ‘against’ the proposal. Some requests have been received for that information and in view of the delay in submitting

the business case I can confirm that formal responses were received during the

consultation in the form of letters and emails from 264 people. Of that total, 223

expressed opposition to the proposal and 41 expressed support for it.

Chris Tulley, Chair of Governors

Final assembly from Matt Lunn

On Tuesday 3rd July, we had our final assembly from Matt

Lunn. Over the years, he has given many excellent

assemblies at Oatlands Junior School. They have always been interesting, had a clear message and most of all the

children have enjoyed them. He is leaving to take up a

new position in London, with which we wish him the best

of luck.

Mr Moore

Oatlands Nature Area – The revamp!

Work has been taking place this week to transform our nature area. We are working

alongside Oatlands Allotment Group who have already helped clear some of the weeds and shrub area and further work this week has been carried out, intstalling some large

raised beds, a pathway to the shady area and clearing the pond. Watch out for further

developments in the coming months as we work to transform this area into a place of

tranquility, peace and a haven for both children and nature! Moving forward, we are looking for old tyres, wooden pallets, large logs (for sitting on)

and old large pans (to make a music station). We have also had some parents express an

interest in helping out with the nature area. If you too would like to join a small (or

large!) working group, please get in touch @ [email protected]

If using social media sites, remember to keep your settings as private as possible.

Year 6 Transition Days at Harrogate Grammar School

If your Year 6 child is attending the transition days at Harrogate Grammar School next

week, we have been advised by Mr Milburn that they do not have to wear school uniform

but should wear something appropriate for doing PE. Mrs Wilkinson

Triathlon Stars!

Conor Lister, Iona Melville, Leila Barclay and Georgia Murray all competed in the Ripon Junior triathlon on Sunday 1st

July. This involved 150m open water swim (in a lake), 2k

cycle and then 1.2k run. As it was so warm, they didn’t have

to wear wetsuits - all very brave to get in that water. For some of them, it was their first open water triathlon and

they had to overcome some nerve to do it. They were all

amazing and did the Harrogate Junior triathlon club proud!

Well done! Mrs Murray

Year 6 Production

Year 6 have been working incredibly hard practising for the Y6 production of ‘More! A Tale of Oliver Twist’. They are looking forward to performing this to the school on Tuesday 10th

July. Year 6 parents/carers will have received a letter today regarding performance

arrangements.

Weir’s Weekly Review

Year 5 pupils shared their D&T biscuit

making project, this week. Creative designs and ingredients! Personal

handwriting achievements were

applauded by the group. Fascinating

facts about Ancient Greek democracy and Olympic games were well presented.

Results from Science and Maths

investigations were shared, with some

interesting discussion. The Review was

finished with a beautifully written opening to a fable being read. All the

children were fantastic at giving each

other feedback and praise. Miss Weir

Ice Lolly Friday Thursday!

As the good weather continues it seems silly not to celebrate the long weekend with an ice lolly

(although personally I’m still on my quest for a gin-pop ….especially due to the long weekend!!)

Refreshments

One last massive thank you goes to all who have been helping out with refreshments at recent school events, we really appreciate the time that you give up to do this. Also a wee heads up that

at the Year 6 evening productions there will be the usual refreshments and also an honesty bar

will be in operation

PTA AGM

This is being held tonight at 7.30 in So Bar (their private room) and all are very welcome to join

us for a wee glass of wine as we celebrate what we’ve achieved this year and look to next. Thanks to all who have sent apologies already and for some lovely messages – much appreciated!
