Welcome to our first show of the 2019/2020 Mainstage Season, a season we’ve entitled: “A New Building, a Bright Future.” And welcome, for the first time, to our brand-new performance space provided by the FJUHSD School Board with the support of Measure I. I am so excited to be bringing you an incredible season of stories in this state-of-the-art new facility. For the first time in over 12 years, our entire season is going to be produced here, on our campus, in our very own building. What an incredible gift to this wonderfully supportive La Habra community! I can’t wait for you to experience all this building has to offer! This season features Broadway blockbusters like Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Matilda, love letters to the theater in Shakespeare in Love and The Drowsy Chaperone, timeless classics in Fiddler on the Roof and Romeo and Juliet, and, as always, one of our very own creations in SHE MOVES: The Tyrone Wells Dance Experience (which will feature recording artist Tyrone Wells on our stage alongside our students for three nights). I promise you this will be a season unlike any other and I hope you will get tickets today for the rest of our season.

Also tonight in our black box, you are either seated in a rented seat or in one of our brand new theater seats generously donated by one of our LHTG Patrons. If you would like to support our program by donating one of the remaining, yet-to-be-donated theater seats to our black box, we would invite you to go to our website where you can find out more about our TAKE-A-SEAT program. We have a limited number of seats left for purchase but we hope to have all our seats by the next black box production in March 2020.

Fiddler on the Roof, with book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, is an important story for our time. The themes of tradition, family and faith are universal and deeply rooted in all our cultures. The story of 1905 Tsarist Russia couldn’t be more specifically steeped in a time and place but also seem to transcend geographic and cultural barriers. It is an emotional and universal story about balance, “...and how do we keep our balance? That I can tell you in a word: tradition”. For me, this idea of “balance” is represented in the circles that are present throughout the text. The circle is a perfectly balanced shape. Things in this story are continually brought back and the story seems to wrap around on itself in perfect symmetry. Tonight, you will literally be invited into the “circle of this little village” as you sit in-the-round in our new black box space.

I will never be able to adequately write about my love for this musical and this wonderful man “Tevye”. My journey with him began in the 6th grade in an FCRT production, continued on in my senior year at Fullerton Union High School, and has furthered through several subsequent directorial opportunities (Biola Youth Theater, Fullerton Children’s Repertory Theater, and for the LHTG in 2006). I find new things about this character every time I return to this beautiful story. While in preparation for this rehearsal process (and my eventual portrayal of Tevye in our GuildPLUS production) I was struck by how many of Tevye’s lines are in the form of questions. In his loving and delightfully familiar relationship with his God, Tevye knows the values of tradition and faith are only truly alive if they are continually being evaluated for the truth at their core. It is my desire to live in that circle of a balanced life as I strive to live in grace and demonstrate love. It is in my own relationship with my own God that I also find this perfect circlwe of grace and love and tradition that I’m so thankfully changed daily. I hope you will enjoy this wonderful story of this complex man and his thoughtful community.

I’m happy to share him and these people with you tonight.

L’chaim!
