November 3, 2019 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

“But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.’” LUKE 19:8 We are all called to gratefully give back to the Lord in proportion to the blessings we have been given. This means everyone isn’t called to give the same amount, but is called to give equal sacrifice. No amount is too small or insignificant! Open your heart, how is God calling you to be more generous with your financial resources and possessions?

Please remember the Church and School in your will.

Dear Friends, This weekend we take a moment in our Masses to commission our SVCC lay liturgical ministers: altar servers, sacristans, extraordinary ministers of holy communion, lectors, and ushers. Thank you all for your commitment to serving Christ and our parish communities through these important ministries. These commissionings follow last month’s training workshops for liturgical ministers offered throughout the Valley by Janette Strand, our SVCC PA for Music and Liturgy. We appreciate Janette leading this training and all who made time to attend. If you were not able to attend and are interested in being included in a “make up” workshop, please let Janette know; her contact information is on the front of this bulletin. The faithful, reverent, and skilled witness of our lay liturgical ministers truly is a blessing to our priests and our Skagit Valley Catholic parishes. Thank you all. In Christ, Fr. Tom P.S. Many thanks to our SVCC Respect Life task force and all who participated in this year’s Respect Life speaker series in October. The photo here is from Richard Doerflinger’s presentation on physician assisted suicide on a very stormy Monday evening last month.

Tri-Parish Food Bank

Immaculate Conception + St. Charles + Sacred Heart Food distribution on Saturday from 12:00 to 3:00 pm

“For I was hungry and you gave me food ....” Matthew 25:35

We are so grateful for our volunteers. Each week one or more of our volunteers greets our clients as they enter the Food Bank. Returning clients are checked in and new clients are entered into the computer system. While we serve anyone who comes to the Food Bank, we need to know the number of clients we serve each week. The following volunteers make this happen each and every week —rain or shine — hot or cold: Margaret Gross, Maribeth Ryan, Tracy Ouelette, Carol Dufer and Heidi Lee. Thank you for your willingness to serve and greet our clients whether it is in person or with the follow up data entry — thank you.

Thank you to Catholic Community Services for allowing Jose Ortiz to continue to lead the Tri-Parish Food Bank until we secure a replacement for his position. Thank you Jose for your continued support of the Food Bank as you transition to your new position.

Most Saturdays of the year the TPFB receives volunteer support from youth groups from parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle. This week we owe our thanks to a group from St. Michaels who always look forward to this— their annual weekend retreat— spending all day Saturday in support of the Tri-Parish Food Bank. You are an awesome group of young people — thank you.

Job Announcement We are accepting applications for a Director of the Tri-Parish Food Bank. A job description and application form can be picked up at St. Charles Parish. The position is for 32 hours per week. This position also has oversight of the Youth Migrant Project—a vibrant summer program. Please feel welcome to contact Denise Rhone at 360-757-0128 with any questions regarding this job announcement.

A Note from Father Paul Magnano I think it’s important to point out the number of parishioners running for public office, bringing our Catholic faith into the civic arena: Immaculate Conception: Mary Hudson; Sacred Heart: Jennie Beltramini, Lynette Cram, Matthew Cutter; St. Charles: Joe DeGloria, Rick DeGloria, David Lowell, Rich Wessen; Immaculate Heart of Mary: Dennis O’Neill, Brendan McGoffin, Pola Kelley, Glenn Allen, Eric Lodjic.

Your commitment can be fulfilled through monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual installments. If you wish, you can give to the campaign gifts of stock, real estate, life insurance and other planned gift opportunities. As tax laws are always changing and everyone’s situation is unique, donors are encouraged to consult with financial advisors to determine which method of contributing is most beneficial to them. Baptismal Blankets Ministry Report This ministry was started in September 2018 to knit/crochet white blankets for the infants and toddlers baptized at ICC. White is the color for baptism, the sacrament being "purified and cleansed from sin". The blanket symbolism we see as "wrapped and cradled in the love of God."

Nineteen women have contributed blankets to this ministry. This year, 2019, 75 blankets were distributed, 67 in the Spanish speaking congregation and 8 in the English. What a blessing to have so many infants brought into God's family.

The ministry group meets once a month on the second Wednesday of the month in the parish office building from 10-11am. We would dearly love to have more people participating in this ministry. You don't have to attend the meetings. The only directions are that the blankets be white, knit or crochet, machine-washable, and about 30x36 inches. Each person chooses her own pattern and supplies needles or crochet hook. There is some donated yarn available.

You may contact me, Virginia Thogersen, for more information or just stop by at the Wednesday meetings, Nov.13 or Dec 11. [email protected] or 360-873-8817(voice only).
