From the Pews…. A Holy Place Amid Challenging Terrain
During Advent, our parish takes part in bringing gifts to those less fortunate than ourselves, as well as supporting our seminarians. It is a way to prepare our hearts for Christmas as we reach out to others in our community.
The Giving Tree is displayed near the statue of the Blessed Mother and is filled with gift tags for children and families supported by Catholic Charities and also for our seminarians. RETURN INSTRUCTIONS: Please purchase cards as indicated on the gift tag and return both card and tag to the church by Dec. 12th. Note: The seminarian gift cards should be mailed to the Diocese using the envelope attached to the tag.
This Advent we will help those in need in our community by giving out “Christmas Food Baskets.” We are now accepting donations of non-perishables such as stuffing mixes, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, canned
vegetables, etc., or whatever makes up a hearty Christmas dinner. To donate call the
Rectory Office at 860-887-1030. In addition, we will accept fresh foods such as 5-pound bags of potatoes, fresh bunches of carrots and butternut squash on Monday, December 20th at 10:00am in the Church Hall.
“Prepare a pathway for the Lord’s coming, make a straight road for him!” —Luke 3:4
Our road to holiness often detours through dry, faithless, tiring and challenging terrain. In this week’s gospel, John the Baptist knew that, so he was trying to communicate to the world that there is a better path that leads us to salvation. John proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Some listened, while others resisted John’s message of finding peace, hope, freedom and love by following a path leading directly to Jesus. We are all tested, but to find a holy place we must go deeper within. It is in that deep place where we can ask Jesus who he wants us to be and what he wants us to do. It is in that place that we can listen for his loving and reassuring voice. If we’re honest with ourselves we will take responsibility for those times we have veered off the pathway and into the rough places where our sinful behaviors have gotten us into trouble. If we are repentant, Jesus forgives. We, like John, have a message to communicate to the world. Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Light. Only God has the power to straighten out our lives, if we let him do the work that is necessary.
This Advent season let us open our hearts and minds to the messages of truth and peace, love and forgiveness, light and hope. We ask Jesus to help us resist the unholy pathways. And like John, let us become modern day evangelists, unafraid to assist the weak and vulnerable,
willing to listen to the lonely and discouraged, and to be a light of hope for the weary. How will we prepare a pathway for the Lord? Here are some simple suggestions: Pray with scripture, simplify an area of your life that has become too cluttered, separate worries from concerns and give them to Jesus, listen to music that helps improve your quality of life, find a holy, quiet place to listen to God, make friends with a person who shares your
faith, share your faith with someone who needs a friend, be kind to the unkind, slow down, talk less and listen more, and squash your ego. Remind yourself that God is the Manager of the universe and doesn’t need your help. Lastly, before your head hits the pillow at night, think of one thing that you’ve never been grateful for before. God has a way of turning around even the greatest challenges and setting us back on a straight pathway.
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary — December 8th Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Blessed Pope Pius IX proclaimed on December 8, 1854: "The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin." — Catechism of the Catholic Church
Mary’s predestination to this singular grace—consistent with the suspension of the universal decree by which every man, from the moment of his conception is contaminated with original sin—leads us to ponder in the deepest depths the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity’s salvific plan. God, One and Triune, had foreseen from the very beginning the future incarnation of the Word culminating in the redemption of human nature that had fallen into sin. He therefore predestined pure Mary, so that He could draw from her uncontaminated humanity, which the Son could adopt in order to re-establish in Himself the original purity of creation and reorientate it to eternal glory. Immaculate Mary is full of grace. She is not only Christ’s disciple, who with the help of grace has overcome the chains of sin, but she is the noble resting place of the Holy Trinity (St Thomas Aquinas, Exposito Salutationis Angelicae, I). The Immaculate, full of grace, will always be Mother and Queen for that elect part of the Church that we hope one day to join, that will one day joyfully sing before the Almighty.

Oh glorious St. Rita, who didst miraculously participate in the sorrowful Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, obtain for me the grace to suffer with resignation the troubles of this life, and
protect me in all my needs. Amen.The prayer to St. Rita, like her miracles, helps remind us
indeed that “all things are possible with God,” as Jesus said in Mark’s gospel (10:27). Roses are her symbol.
Her feast day is May 22nd.
