November 13th, 2016 ~ Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

POST NOVEMBER 8… I write this article on Tuesday November 8 Election Day so I do not know who our next president will be but I also realize that the Catholic Church will still be here after today. It is also important as Carl Anderson, the Supreme Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in the United States, writes in a newsletter entitled CRUX “…regardless of the outcome of the election, America will remain a deeply- divided country and those divisions are to a very real extent with our own Catholic faith community.” He suggests that Catholics should be even more active in the process as we move in the future to protect religious freedoms of all people. He further suggests that Catholic Identity is something very important and that Catholics in the community can be a voice for reason and can work in a collaborative way with all groups of people. The challenge is to be proud of being a Catholic and not to be afraid to witness for the values of the Gospel…Fr. Joe “BE RICH IN GOOD WORKS” – Annual Bishop’s Appeal for our diocesan needs… I wish to thank all of our parishioners who have responded to the Bishop’s request to help fund the daily operation of so many good works with our diocese. Some of you responded early to his letter, many of you made your pledges on Commitment weekend in October. May I ask those of you who have not yet make a pledge to consider doing so before Thanksgiving? Your pledges will help us make our assigned goal of $30,000 but it will also help us at OLM in our planning because 50% of the above pledge monies come back to the parish and knowing how much we might go over our goal is very helpful in our budgeting. It goes without saying for those of you who have been long time parishioners but for those of you who have recently joined that OLM relies upon each family to help us financially because your contributions help us pay our bills and also to reach out to those in need with our programs. Your regular Sunday offering in church or through electronic giving are very important for the parish. Pledge envelopes are available in the church office. You can pick one up and complete it and put is in the collection basket or you can help our Bishop’s Appeal and help OLM through your On line gifts go to www.2016appeal.org. Thank you. Fr. Joe JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY… Today the Holy Doors in the churches throughout the world will be closed except for St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Those doors will be closed by Pope Francis as the Holy Year of Mercy ends next week. There is a quote of Pope Francis as he urges us to be people of mercy: “In today’s ever more hectic and forgetful word, which leaves so many men and women behind as it races on,

breathlessly and aimlessly, we need the oxygen of this gratuitous and life-giving love. We thirst for mercy and no technology can quench that thirst. We seek a love that endures beyond momentary pleasures, a safe harbor where we can end our restless wanderings, an infinite embrace that forgives and reconciles.” “Forgiveness is surely the greatest gift we can give to others, because it is the most costly. Yet at the same time, it is what makes us most like God.”

A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK…from St. Mother Theresa of Calcutta - “As Christians, every part of our life is oriented toward our place as citizens in the kingdom of God. We are called to love. We are called to serve. We are called to recognize the face of Christ in everyone around us, even our enemies, for the greater good of all.”

BISHOP’S MASS FOR REPECT LIFE… Bishop Serratelli writes: I will celebrate the Respect Life Mass (formerly called the Unborn Mass) on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 10:00 AM. This year, the Mass will be celebrated at Saint Margaret of Scotland Parish, Morristown. This Mass is sponsored by the Paterson Federation Knights of Columbus Councils. All clergy, deacons, staff, parishioners, friends and families are encouraged to attend. Please share this information with all. Following the Mass, there will be light refreshments. WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC? We are Catholic because we believe: All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1030-1031 GLUTEN HOSTS… In both St. Mark’s and OLM we offer the use of Gluten free hosts for those who need them. The process that we follow in both parishes is that the person who needs such a host goes to where they are kept and puts it into a separate golden container called a PYX and places it on the offertory table and it is brought up to the altar. The priest takes the PYX along with the other hosts when he goes down to distribute communion. I mention this now because there might be someone who could benefit from the Gluten free host and also for those of you who use the hosts I would ask you to introduce yourself to Fr. Slawek a couple of times until he gets to recognize you on the communion line.

NEXT WEEKEND: Guest speaker from the UNBOUND organization … Father Joseph Gosselin is a Missionary of Our Lady of La Salette. He was ordained in 1965. He has served as a seminary faculty member and director for the La Salette community in the Philippines, and he has also studied in France and led groups for extensive workshops in Mexico. Recently he had a profound experience of immersion and service in Haiti and hopes to stay connected with the people there. “I like the fact that Unbound helps the most marginalized of our people. It seems to complement my missionary experience, especially in Haiti.”

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament We will be having Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday, November 14th, from 7:00-8:00PM in the church. Everyone is welcome, so please join us for an hour of prayer and meditation. Please sign up on the sheets that are on the stand near the statue of St. Joseph side of the Sanctuary.
