October-November 2019 MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT

October 15th—December 7th, 2019 Each year during the Open Enrollment Period, Medicare beneficiaries will have the opportunity to compare and evaluate their current Medicare Prescription Drug coverage and make changes as necessary. By comparing plans during the Open Enrollment Period, Medicare beneficiaries can save money and make certain that their 2020 plan will be the best for their needs. Our SHIIP counselors can help you find the best plan to fit your needs, by completing the comparison for you utilizing the Medicare website.

Please come by the Senior Center to complete your Medicare Prescription Drug Form. Forms may be picked up Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. Once the forms are completed, we will schedule an appointment for you. If you already have a MyMedicare account, please bring your login and password.

You will need your Medicare Card and a complete list of your prescription medications.

NEW MEDICARE CARD UPDATES

Beginning January 1, 2020, Medicare beneficiaries will no longer be able to use their old Medicare cards. Providers will

only be able to accept new cards. You should have

received your new card. If you have not, contact Medicare immediately at 1-800-633-

4227 or visit MyMedicare.gov.

The Senior Center will host a FREE Medicare 101 “The

Basics” class. The class will give you a better

PROGRAMS FLU SHOT CLINIC October 11th, 3:00-4:00pm The Caldwell County Health Department will be giving flu shots at the Senior Center. You will need to register and come a few minutes early to complete the consent form. Don’t forget to bring your Medicare card. Please call 758-2883 to register.

NUTRITION CLASS October 14th, 3:00-4:00pm Have you wondered how to watch what you eat and figure out what you are actually eating? The Caldwell Co. Health Dept. will offer this FREE program at the Senior Center to teach how to read food labels, about nutrition in TV dinners, lunch meat and other processed foods and give you low fat & low sugar options. They will also be discussing food preparation and clean up! Call 758-2883 to register.

LIVING WITH COPD October 18th, 10:00-11:00am Are you or a loved one living with COPD? If so, please join Brandi Newell, FNP-C, for this FREE program to learn about things you can do to manage symptoms, reduce exacerbations and breathe easier. (758-2883 to register) LIVING WITH LIVER DISEASE November 22nd, 10:00-11:00am If you or a loved one are among the 4.5 million Americans living with liver disease, please join Brandi Newell, FNP-C to learn more about what to expect and ways to minimize symptoms. TAI CHI FOR BEGINNERS October 1st, 3rd, 15th & 17th from 3:00-4:00 PM This FREE class is video led and is perfect for those new to Tai Chi. The 8-session class began in September and will conclude on Oct. 17th. Please register at 758-2883.

ESTATE PLANNING FOR SENIORS October 8th, 3:30-4:30pm David Hudson with Hudson Estate & Financial Consulting will be at the Senior Center to give a FREE program about planning your estate for a lifetime and beyond. Many people don’t understand the consequences of not having a will, don’t know the cost of legal documents, don’t know a good attorney or don’t understand legal language. Come learn how to formulate a great estate plan. Please register at 758-2883.

ADVANCED CARE PLANNING WORKSHOP Oct. 10th & Nov. 14th at the Senior Center at 1:30pm. Oct. 24th at Robbins Center in Hudson.

Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care will host these FREE workshops on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays. They will not meet on Thanksgiving. CRAFT BAZAAR & BAKE SALE—Saturday, November 16th, 9:00am-3:00pm Our annual Craft Bazaar will take place on a Saturday this year. If you wish to register for a booth, please call 758-2883 beginning on Oct. 1st. To secure a booth, your fee of $10 will need to be paid by October 18th. If it is not paid by that date, your booth reservation will be given to the next person on the waiting list as space is limited. Specific table locations will not be guaranteed. The booth fee will go toward advertising costs. Booth set-up will take place on Friday, Nov. 15th from 3:00-5:00 or Saturday, Nov. 16th at 8:00am. Bring your Christmas list and shop!

SENIOR FUN AND FRIENDSHIP CLUB Thursdays, 9:30am-1:00pm This group meets for socializing at 9:00am and card games begin at 9:30. Games include Bridge and Hand & Foot, or you can start a new game. Bring light refreshments to share. A covered-dish lunch is scheduled on the 5th Thursday of each month. Club dues are $15/year. EUCHRE Thursdays, 1:00pm Come join in on this fun social card game! We will teach you if you don’t know how to play.

KNITTING AND CROCHETING Mondays, 9:30-11:30am Experienced and new yarn crafters are welcome.

LAP QUILTING AND NEEDLEWORK Thursdays, 1:30-3:30pm Quilting will start in November to work on projects in time for Christmas. A drawing will be held each month for a fabric gift (such as a fat quarter). Jeanne Enloe is the instructor and the fee is $20/month. Join in!

GAMES LEARN SOMETHING NEW

SENIOR CRAFTERS Tuesdays, 10:00am-12:00 noon Crafters teach and learn from each other. New crafters are welcome! ADULT COLORING CLUB Monday, Oct. 28th & Monday, Nov. 25th from 3:00-4:30pm If you are interested in getting together to color, please join this group. This is a stress free zone and time of relaxing. CALDWELL SENIOR SONGBIRDS Tuesdays at 9:30am The Songbirds are looking for some singers! They meet to practice then travel to area nursing homes to entertain the residents. If you enjoy singing in a group, come join them!

Dept. of Social Services (DSS) receives and evaluates reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation of older adults as required by law. Do you know when and how to make a report? (SENIORS HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION PROGRAM) Volunteers & Senior Center Staff Staff and volunteers are trained by the S.H.I.I.P. division of the NC Department of Insurance to answer questions about Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Prescription Drug coverage, Medicare Supplement policies and Long Term Care Insurance. LEGAL ASSISTANCE Legal Aid of North Carolina Morganton Office Staff from Legal Aid of N. C. Morganton Office comes one or two times a year (as long as annual funding lasts) to make simple wills for persons over age 60. An appointment is necessary and a waiting list is maintained. Legal services for civil matters are provided by the Morganton office for seniors who qualify financially. Call us for information 758-2883. TRANSPORTATION Transportation is provided by Greenway Transit. Call 464-9444 by noon three days before the requested date to schedule a ride. SENIOR TAR HEEL CARDS If you are over 60 and a Caldwell Co. resident, these cards may be picked up at the senior center. They are good for free entry or a discount to county school sporting events at schools that honor them. One card per person may be obtained. Please bring an ID with you. SENIOR MEAL SITES There are four congregate meal sites in the County: Koinonia and Martin Luther King Recreation Center in Lenoir, Kings Creek Baptist Church, and Shuford Recreation Center in Granite Falls. Nutrition Services Director for Blue Ridge Community Action is Mary Wright, who may be reached at 828-438-6255 Ext. 0, for more information. MOBILE FOOD PANTRY The Senior Center is now a site on the 4th Monday of each month at 1:30pm for the Yokefellow Food Pantry. Please register at 758-2883. COMPUTER/INTERNET Computers are available for your use Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS Adrian Kincaid, Volunteer RN A volunteer will be at the Senior Center on the 3rd Friday of each month from 9:15-10:00am to check blood pressures. VOTER REGISTRATION SITE The Senior Center is open Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm for you to register. BETTER BREATHERS CLUB This is a support group for those with chronic lung disease and their caregivers. It meets on the 3rd Friday of each month (11:00am) at the Senior Center and is facilitated by volunteers with the American Lung Association.

The Satie and J. E. Broyhill Caldwell Senior Center is open to all Caldwell County residents age 60 and better and their spouses. A full schedule of activities is offered five days a week.
