A patient brought to me a recent article in the Times Colonist (Feb. 4, 2015) regarding the

New York state crack down on misleading supplements.

I like getting these types of articles as

they keep me on my toes! As she handed me the article I said that is why we encourage people

to see naturopathic physicians. It is our job to find the highest quality remedies for our patients available

in Canada as well as the rest of the world.

Not only are we concerned about the remedy containing therapeutic amounts of the active ingredients, we are concerned about contaminants such as heavy metals. Professional companies that we use provide third party testing on all of their remedies.

What is happening more and more is that companies such as Thorne, Metagenics and Douglas Labs, are sending back raw materials because they do not pass the stringent testing required. This causes remedies to be put on back order until the high standards are met.

Mediherb, in Australia, is one of my favourites. Their quality control standards are even higher than in Canada so it is much easier to get NPN’s on their products. They also provide spectrographs on the active ingredients in every batch to assure you are getting what you pay for.

My motto is: If you think St.John’s wort or Echinacea is not working then try a professional brand first before you give up.

I went on to ask her if she knew about the in depth article in the Financial Post written by Tom

Blackwell on Jan. 16: Inside Canada’s secret world of medical error: “There is a lot of lying, there’s a lot of cover up.”

In this article in the Financial Post, adverse events and deaths in hospitals are reported by province per year based on a 2004 study by Baker and Norton.

In this May 2004 landmark study: The Canadian Adverse Events Study on page 1683 there is startling statistics! In the year 2000, adverse reactions (AE’s) account for 7.5 per cent of patients admitted to acute care hospitals in Canada.

By extrapolation this suggests that between 141,250 and 232,250 AE reactions occurred and of these, 20 per cent or between 9,250 and 23,750 AE’s result in either permanent disability or death.

The most common AEs are surgery-related events and the second most common are drug or fluid related events.

This study only focused on adult care and these methods and tools are now being adapted for hospital and home pediatric care. The good news is that this paper sped the launch of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) in 2004 which has began several initiatives to improve safety in healthcare.

If this was the rate of AE’s with naturopathic medicine, we would all be in jail. So even with the limitations in quality control of natural products over the counter in the marketplace, their cause of death or disabling adverse reactions is extremely rare. According to Dr. Mercola and the U.S. National Poison Data System’s there were zero deaths reported in 2010 linked to nutritional supplements.

The moral of my story is that naturopathic medicine is an adjunct to other health care providers. If you want to have the flu shot every year even though the efficacy may only turn out to be as low as 20 per cent as is the case of the 2014-2015 flu vaccine or as high as 60 per cent (2013-2014 version), then consider also using other high quality immune enhancing remedies provided by naturopathic physicians.

The goal of naturopathic medicine is to keep you out of hospitals as much as possible. If it is not possible, inform your doctor that you want to participate in patient-centered care and take an advocate with you!
