COURTENAY — Whether looking at international student numbers, new ways of delivering programs or collaborations with industry partners, North Island College continues to grow in all areas.
NIC’s International Education has grown “signifi cantly” over the past year, according to Susan Auchterlonie, director of college and community relations. Enrolment numbers have increased by 30 per cent.
About 150 students from 28 different countries will come through NIC during this academic year, and the college expects that number to rise to 175 next year.
“The coming year will see International Education investing in student scholarships to encourage domestic students to study abroad and international students to study at NIC,” adds Auchterlonie. “Funding will also be in place to assist faculty interested in pursuing international experiences.”
She also notes NIC introduced a
post-degree diploma program in global business management, which has attracted students from Canada and abroad.
English-as-a-second-language programming is now offered year-round, making the program more accessible to international and domestic students, adds Auchterlonie.
Meanwhile, the college continues to develop its Remote Web-based Science Laboratory (RWSL) at NIC’s Comox Valley campus.
It was awarded $557,000 in November from the U.S.-based Consortium for Healthcare Online, which will support expanding the use of
the RWSL technology beyond science education to the fi eld of healthcare, says Auchterlonie.
The funding will enable NIC to
work with Pueblo Community College in Colorado to facilitate delivery of remote labs to Kodiak College in Alaska and to develop new Allied Health
experiments.The college also
plans to build support for greater faculty and staff involvement in research and technological
innovation through a Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation.
“With existing partnerships in both the aquaculture
and health science fi elds, as well as the development of the technology to provide web-based robotic delivery of science

Young people from all over the Comox Valley are invited to participate in this opportunity to win a cash prize of $750 for an individual, or up to
$500 for a group.We are so fortunate
to have youth who are doing great things for our environment. Here is your chance to have them recognized.
If you know someone between the ages of fi ve and 21 who is always there to lend a helping hand for environmental causes, why not
nominate them for the “Caring for the Trees Award”? This award is proudly presented and sponsored by BC Hydro and the Comox Valley Land
Trust to honour young environmental champions from the Oyster River to Deep Bay. Many of our young citizens initiate or take part in projects to improve the health of the natural world. Perhaps they plant gardens or trees, recycle, clean up (or better yet, reduce) garbage, or educate others about conservation.
Pick up a nomination form from
the Conservation Centre (2356 Rosewall Crescent, Courtenay) or go online to www.cvlandturst.ca/caring-for-the-trees-award-nomination, download the form, print as many as you need, fi ll out and leave at the offi ce at your school, drop off at the Conservation Centre 2356 Rosewall Crescent or drop in mail to CV Land Trust, PO Box 3462, Courtenay BC, V9N 5N5. Nominations
are open until Friday, April 5th when a panel of citizens and experts will get together and choose the winners. One individual will be awarded $750 and be invited to plant a mature tree in her/his honour. There will also be a group prize of $500 and two more of $200.00 each. labs for online science and health courses, North Island College has shown that it has the knowledge and expertise to become leaders in the development of new projects or collaborations that will benefi t the communities it serves,” says Auchterlonie.
“NIC is taking steps to develop a regional centre for applied research and technological innovation whereby existing research activities can be supported and recognized, and
new research and innovation can be nurtured.”
NIC also received a $200,000 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Innovation Enhancement grant.
Using this funding, the college, in collaboration with the BC Salmon Farmers Association and four industry partners, is investigating the impacts of salmon aquaculture on hard seabed substrates, according to Auchterlonie.
“The intent of this research is to improve monitoring techniques
currently in place by the salmon aquaculture industry,” says Auchterlonie. “This investigation will provide a solid foundation for future industry growth in hard bottom areas and will also help inform a broader, more thoughtful dialogue about the impacts of the industry.”
NIC has also applied for a fi ve-year NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges grant to develop a broad research program investigating sustainable aquaculture techniques and practices.

Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase instem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become othertypes of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heartcells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under ourskin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skinmay help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may makeus look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in manyillnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body aredecreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability torejuvenate tissues. It does not contain live human stem cells as these can only be transplanted bysurgery and are subject to immuno-suppressant drugs to avoid graft rejection. Naturopathic Doctorsummarized his experience in writing after using this Stem Cell Activator: Used for all organ and
tissue damage, heart attack damage, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury, muscular dystrophy, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, lupus, spinal injuries, and other diseases and tissue damage. The results have been very satisfactory to us and to thepatients and the time varies with different patients depending on the extremity of the damage.Women witnessing the effects of Bell Stem Cell Activator:Women looking for anti-aging help! Last year John Spry found an opportunity to put into action his beliefs about helping others.
But more importantly, by doing so you can open the doors for others to do the same.
After meeting Melena, the English teacher at the local elementary school in Rincon de Guayabitos he offered to assist her in teaching her various classes. She and the principal agreed and Spry discovered that students, whether in Campbell River or Rincon de Guayabitos, are all the same: bright, cheerful and full of life. What isn’t the same, however, is the lack of materials for the students to learn and practice their learning.
As a former Superintendent of Schools back in Canada Spry knew how well equipped each classroom is with computers, overhead projectors; not to say anything about the students’ consumable items. While assisting Melena he discovered how many of these items
we take for granted back in Canada are so important and often lacking in the Mexican classroom.
Pencils are usually short stubby pieces that most golfers back home wouldn’t even consider using. While at the same time, erasers are often small smatterings of rubber that more often than not leave a grey smudge.
And paper for students to draw on or to make notes on are always in short supply. The teachers use felt markers for the white boards that are so light it is at times impossible for the students to make out what it is written.
At fi rst the effort to assist the local students was helped by giving each of the students a pencil.
Later a fellow Canadian, Greg Abar, provided toothpaste for each student and Sherry Saunderson, a dental hygienist came to the school and provided a lesson on brushing their teeth and gave each student a toothbrush.
Before leaving for home last year,
the money Spry had earned while teaching cooking at Casa Los Pelecanos was donated to the English program at the school. On returning to Canada there was little thought or effort put into doing any more for the school and its students.
Once home, however, several of his former colleagues, who had heard about the needs of the school in Rincon de Guayabitos offered to obtain pencils and other materials for his return this year. So in December, through the effort of Colleen Epp, Spry was given a box full of pencils, erasers, glue sticks, paper, pencil sharpeners, coloured pencils, crayons, rulers, and twelve calculators. As well, others from Campbell River gave more pencils, enough for every student to have two or three each for this school year.
The good news here is that if you make that little effort to share your knowledge and/or worldly goods, others too will assist you in helping the youth of this land.
John Spry, left, presents school supplies to the principal of Rincon de Guayabitos’ elementary school which were collected in Campbell River.Photo submitted

ALERT BAY—A dark oil slick moved last week through the rocks bordering the shoreline of Cormorant Island last week.
A network of slender black tentacles snaked sinuously through a hazy, charcoal cloud that obscured the blue-gray water offshore.
Then, its dark and oily dance complete, the slick resolved itself into human form and lifted its veil.
“You know, I’ve never beachcombed as an oil slick before,” Jan Lehde said matter-of-factly. A few steps away, artist Kari Glass laughed and prepared to help Lehde shed her “Oil Spill, Oil Slick” costume, actually an award-winning piece of wearable art created by Glass for recent shows in Courtenay and Campbell River.
Glass, a U.S.-born artist, artistic director and theatre worker, now makes her home in Alert Bay. Then again, one person’s home is another’s two-story art studio and workshop, with every
wall and horizontal surface, as well as much of the ceiling and many windows, covered in projects either completed, in progress or simply in their concept stages.
With materials ranging from paper and cardboard to beach-scavenged glass, fl attened beer-bottle tops, wire, plastic jugs and bottles and possibly every fabric known to man, the home is a shrine to the conversion of
the mundane to the inspirational.
“I trained as a painter, but I kind of reverted to what I did in elementary school,” said Glass, who has an art degree from San Jose State University in California. “The teachers were always having us make things we brought from home, like egg cartons, boxes, detergent bottles.”
The advent of wearable art shows in recent years at the Comox Valley Art
Gallery and Campbell River Art Gallery have provided Glass a perfect outlet for her two passions — created art from recycled materials, and theatre performance.
So it should be no surprise Glass and her collaborators have won prizes in both shows for best artistic concept and outstanding performance. The events themselves bear little resemblance to a traditional art show, but instead
are a bizarre hybrid of fashion show — complete with a runway — and interpretive dance or theatre performance. Those who wear the art pieces on stage are referred to not as models, but as performers.
“I always pick actors and dancers to perform in my pieces,” said Glass, who encourages performers to contribute their own choreography while directing their actions.

Winter spring fi shing has been hit and miss over the past few weeks and some fi shermen have said that the salmon may have gone south. In general the month of February has been slower than January but some nice springs are still being caught by the locals. Most fi sh range in size from 14 to 16 pounds and a 28 pounder has been caught. The Lighthouse and the Hump are key destinations but many are fi shing along Willow Point. On the family day holiday on Monday February 11th and a number of boats were out on the water. Discovery pier has been very quiet but it can be a fun place to fi sh and enjoy the scenery.
If the weather is decent and you get the high tide some nice fi shing can be had. Last year a 28 pound spring was caught in April.
In the 1920s a settlement was set up at the spit and the anglers often enjoyed fi shing for some very large salmon. Word spread and fi shermen came from all over the world to fi sh Campbell River. The Campbell River museum has a number of fi shing related displays and is well worth paying a visit.
I was able to meet up with long time resident and commercial fi sherman Gord Brodie.I am in the process of working on a new fl y that is made of material long time used for boat repair This fl y will be used and tested and if it works I will feature the fl y in the fi shing corner in weeks to come. Mary Carstairs from Campbell River traded some fl ies with me and she tied a pattern that was fi shed on the Stamp River.
This time of year many fl y tiers are busy working on a fl y pattern for the salt and fresh water. I was able to speak with Glen Beaton from Black Creek and I was able to get some partridge feathers that can be used for fl y patterns for trout. The Chukars are raised in captivity primarily for meat and eggs. The feathers are gray in color and will be used for making trout fl ies.

ANSWER TO PUZZLE NO. 647
In my last column, I discussed why glutathione (pronounced gloo-tuh-THIGH-ohn) is probably the most important health molecule you’ve never heard of. (Dr. Oz calls it the “super hero” of antioxidants.)
With glutathione becoming the new buzz world in the health and nutrition fi eld, however, it’s becoming more and more important to do your research before investing in any glutathione-boosting product. I’ve already heard many false claims and there are bound to be more, so my advice is to always look for third-party verifi cation of any natural product’s safety and effi cacy.
The fi rst thing to
look for is a product’s eight-digit Natural Product Number (or Homeopathic Medicine Number) on the label. This number is proof that the product has been licensed by Health
Canada. Since Health Canada only licenses products it has deemed to be safe, effective and of high quality, the presence of these eight digits assures
you the product has been reviewed and approved.
Which brings me to my next point, which I’m very excited about.
Last month, Max International’s pure RiboCeine product, MaxOne, became offi cially licensed as a natural product. It’s been verifi ed by Health Canada to
effectively “support the natural production of glutathione by providing the amino acid, cysteine.”
Since glutathione is the major cell protector and master antioxidant in the body, working to cleanse our cells of toxins and free radicals, MaxOne is a proven, effective solution for anyone looking to maintain good health.
It also helps guard our cells against oxidative stress, which has been associated with more than 74 major diseases, including cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
And that’s no false claim.
Darlene Goodrick is an associate with MAX International. She can be reached at 250-897-2058 or through her website at www.LetMaxHelp.org.
