COMOX VALLEY — The lush forests surrounding the Village of Cumberland are enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year who come to the area for both recreation and relaxation.

Beautiful walking and hiking paths and renowned mountain biking trails zigzag through a thriving coastal forest filled with wetlands, streams, historic landmarks and diverse flora and fauna.

This forest also provides a beautiful green backdrop to a community that defines itself by its proximity to the woods — a Village in the Forest.

What many residents and visitors don’t know is that significant parts of this privately owned forest are slated to be logged as early as 2016. The Cumberland Community Forest Society (CCFS) is launching a new campaign to ensure that doesn’t happen.

“Our next purchase is critical to preserving key trails and protecting the southern viewscape of the village,” says CCFS president Andrew Nicoll.

“The first piece is a large parcel to the left of the yellow gate at the bottom of Sutton Road. It contains some of the first mountain biking trails built in the area including Black Hole and Space Nugget. This area is also a huge part of the

south facing viewscape of the community.

“The second piece, also scheduled to be logged in 2016, is the beautiful forest just beyond No. 1 Japanese Town along Comox Lake Road.

“This historically important area was used by the Japanese community and is home to the Perseverance Creek wetlands. It is a stunning natural area and we’re also exploring the possibility of a multi-use board walk project as part of this purchase. This could create accessibility for visitors or diverse ability while at the same time protecting a fragile natural area.”

All of the

forests surrounding Cumberland are privately owned as part of the legacy of the E&N Land Transfer in the late 1800s in which more than two million acres of land along the eastern side of Vancouver Island transferred into private hands in exchange for building a railway.

The CCFS began to purchase privately owned forest lands back in 2000, working co-operatively with land owners and timber companies. To date, the CCFS has raised over $1.2 million and purchased over 150 acres.

The purchased lands are connected to the Coal Creek Heritage Park. Together these

protected lands are part of an important natural corridor along the south side of the Village called the Cumberland Forest.

A vibrant mountain biking community, naturalists, herbalists, hikers, families, artists, photographers, runners and many others consider the Cumberland Forest to be an integral part of the community.

“Our purchases have been funded solely by individuals and organizations committed to forest preservation, without any taxpayer dollars,” Nicoll notes. “Our next purchase will increase this protected area by 50 per cent but that is still just a small part of a big forest.

“The CCFS is committed to continuing its work to acquire all forest lands available in this area to further establish the Cumberland Forest as a protected space for generations to come.

“Monthly donors are how we make these purchases possible and already new donors are signing on to make sure we save these forests in time!”

Big plans are underway to kick off this new campaign in October with a special celebration and big launch event. A fundraising raffle is also underway featuring great prizes including Canucks VIP Package Tickets, a Cruiser Bike, Whale Watching Adventures, Tofino Accommodations, Corre Alice original artwork, gift certificates and much more.

On Sunday August 25th the � nal weigh in for the 4th annual Sayward/Kelsey Bay � shing derby was at 2pm and the � sh were still coming in. There were a lot of local anglers and many came from all over B.C. in hopes of landing a winning � sh. More than 129 � sh were registered and the closing ceremonies were held at the park.

On Discovery Pier in Campbell River the lost � sh may out number the ones caught but recent catches have Al Webber catching a 32.5 lb Tyee and Jim France with a 9 lb spring.

At the Tyee pool in Campbell River the � sh are coming in in good numbers and this year has been exceptional for the anglers and rowers. The Tyee Club has donated

a prize of a tide rowing for the Roberts Lake � sh derby on September 21st. I will be hosting the derby and

Imagine having a computer inside your head, helping you interpret data every moment of the day. Sounds like something out of Star Trek, right? Well, that’s exactly what today’s hearing aids do.

From those external metal cones to the first electronic aids invented shortly after Graham Bell’s telephone, hearing aids have come a long way, baby. But their goal

has always been the same – amplification to improve audibility.

Today, even the most basic aids are highly programmable for an individual’s specific hearing loss. All aids also have automatic gain control (AGC) circuits, meaning that the devices adjust volume

automatically rather than manually.

Generally speaking, the more sophisticated the hearing device, the more options for customization.

Almost all modern hearing aids

also have directional microphones and some form of environmental noise reduction

(ENR). These work in concert to automatically pick out the wanted sounds and eliminate background noise.

Another recent innovation is frequency lowering, or shifting – useful for people with a very profound loss in the high frequencies. By using a frequency-lowering feature, we can move the sound to a frequency with more usable hearing.

One more option is called binaural processing. Until recently, hearing aids worked independently of each other. Today, many hearing aids actually communicate with each other to capture sounds, preserve a more exact soundscape and give the brain more accurate signals.

PORT HARDY – Hot on the heels of the August 7 visit by the Musical Ride, the RCMP were a draw once again in Port Hardy recently.

A small but enthusiastic crowd came out to Cafe Guido Wednesday for an author reading and book signing by Ian Parsons.

The retired RCMP officer was in town to promote a memoir from his 33-year stint on the force, which took him across Canada from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island.

Now a resident of Courtenay, Parsons was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and joined the force in 1961. Over the course of a long and

distinguished career he worked in six provinces in a variety of roles, including academic instructor and management trainer, retiring at the rank of Inspector.

He shared that his personal highlight came towards the end of his career — his posting in Courtenay.

His book was some 25 years in the making, beginning life as a series of anecdotes jotted down and gradually building to the finished work he is currently promoting.

“I think it’s valuable for Canadians to have an insight into their own federal police force,” Parsons said.

The crowd gathered to hear the author share a series of humorous anecdotes from the author’s time in the force. Parsons shared stories from his time as a rookie, including the time he

inadvertently spilled the beans about Christmas bonus cheques to a roomful of hitherto unsuspecting wives; and an incident in which he found out first-hand that spurs on a Harley are

a recipe for disaster. He explained that, while these types of stories were good entertainment, his book also contained a range of experiences and emotions, not all so positive; “I was hoping to take the

reader on a journey,” he said. The work also contains some forthright opinions on what the author sees as problematic in the direction the force is heading. “It (the RCMP) is basically a frontier police force,

that’s what it was created as. It really hasn’t changed that much.”

Benjamin, aged 8, came into my office with his mother last fall. She complained that as soon as school started Benjamin got sick and all year long caught every cold and flu going around, which then spread throughout the household.

I recommended that Benjamin start a tablespoon of fish oil daily as well as ½ tsp of HMF (human flora) probiotic powder. Both of these were very easy for Benjamin to take as he liked the taste. I also instructed his mother on my homeopathic flu program that the whole family could follow from October to May of every year. I saw Benjamin’s mother recently and she said that he had had the best year ever in school and only got sick twice and even then got over it very quickly. She has continued the same program for her whole family and everyone is missing very few days to sickness.

Zoe, age 12, was brought in by her mother for treatment of increasing anxiety. It was beginning to interfere with her school work as well as her sleep. Zoe’s period had not yet started but I told her mother that I used herbal remedies to help with period problems if they arose. In the meantime I

focused my attention on Zoe’s blood sugar, food sensitivities and nutritional deficiencies, the three most common causes of anxiety.

Firstly, I removed any pop from Zoe’s diet explaining that most soft drinks on the market contain seven teaspoons of sugar or more per serving.

I taught Zoe how to make her own iced tea with flavoured herbal teas and sparkling water as well as a soy milk latte made with chai tea to replace the occasional coffee she was having with her friends. Secondly, I taught Zoe and her mother the importance of protein and how to get enough in her diet. Thirdly, Zoe agreed to take some basic nutritional support to correct vitamin B, magnesium and essential fatty acid deficiencies. The fourth thing that I use in these situations is homeopathic remedies called Rubimeds that really help with anxiety and depression. Using the REBA device I determined which complex homeopathic remedies Zoe required. The remedies were put into her daily water bottle and we repeated this testing every two

months with different remedies prescribed every time, for six

months. In six months Zoe was handling school and home pressures very well so she just maintained on a basic nutritional and diet plan. In the

meantime Zoe’s period had started with no complaints.

Michelle, age 7, complained of terrible headaches that would come on suddenly for no reason. Her mother was resorting to giving her acetaminophen on a regular basis for the past several months, but the headaches were in fact getting worse. I suggested that pain medications, when used chronically, can cause rebound pain and that it was better to find out the cause of

the headaches rather than just treating the pain. We did the EDS (Electrodermal testing) for food sensitivities and the culprit foods were removed from Michelle’s diet as much as possible. This included cow’s milk-based dairy products and to supplement her calcium intake I also recommended a liquid calcium and magnesium (cal/mag) for Michelle to take at bedtime. This not

only helped her sleep but decreased her headaches as well. Michelle liked the punch flavour of the cal/mag liquid we have. Several months later Michelle’s mother reported that her daughter was much happier! Her headaches were very rare now, she woke up in a much better mood and she had much less nasal congestion than before and she had not had any pain

medications since the first appointment. Michelle’s teacher also noticed a great improvement in her school work.
