The reasoning is to catch any issues in their earliest stages. It also helps to educate parents on tooth decay, how to clean your child’s teeth, what to put into a sippy cup and how much toothpaste to apply to the toothbrush. Last September, Western Forest Products successfully launched a logging training program on Northern Vancouver Island to help fill a growing labour gap created by the retirement of skilled workers.

In recent years the forestry industry was forced to reduce investment in training due to the challenging economic environment. However, Western is demonstrating its commitment to invest in the future with the launch of its Logging Fundamentals Training Program.

This innovative and comprehensive program teaches

students the fundamentals of logging, providing practical training to work safely and productively in a harvesting environment. Thanks to Western’s hands-on program, graduates become strong candidates for employment in the logging industry.

In response to a growing interest within the forest industry community, Western hosted a tour for a group of 20 interested parties, including representatives from two high schools, four post-secondary schools, six forest companies, the Ministry of Forest Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Truck Loggers Association and industrial training agencies at its Englewood Forest Operation in Woss.

Tour participants met with Western’s current class of six

logging trainees who are learning the trade under the supervision of two experienced instructors.

Already, in week four of the seven-week program, the student trainees were demonstrating solid skills and agility while working in a non-production, low-pressure environment.

In addition to running its own training program, Western supports local training initiatives, such as Carihi Secondary School’s forestry program in Campbell River.

John Mann, vice-president of Timberlands for Western Forest Products recently presented a $1,000 donation to Carihi’s forestry program teacher, Jason Kerluck.

email: [email protected] has been an exceptional year for saltwater anglers going after salmon in waters from Comox to Port Hardy. The Coho have been plentiful in all areas and the Chinook � shing has been good as anglers are getting out and getting their limits. At April Point � sh catches from last week has Phil Bach with a 19.3 lb Spring, Lori Heller with a 21.8 lb spring and Tanner McCoy with a 12.9 lb spring. Lots of Coho are being caught around The Hump, Lighthouse and Green Can. All wild Coho must be released. The Campbell River will soon have its banks loaded with anglers going after pink salmon. Some � sh have been caught but reports from the locals seem that the � sh will be coming in within days. The return of pinks should be strong this year

and the anglers will be getting out and lining up the river banks for recreational � shing fun. Water levels are low and the upper pools are reachable by

wading out, during fast water periods this area is dif� cult to get to

but this area is also � y � shing only. The Campbell River Chinook Spawning gravel placement project continues - there is a marked detour around a short section of the Canyon View Trail along the John Hart generating station road. Expect minor delays as heavy equipment will be accessing the site. The detour will be in effect August 6 to 10th.

Through its seven week Logging Fundamentals Training Program, Western can train 18 students per year. This program is based on the WorkSafe materials for cable yarding and endorsed by the United Steel Workers Union and has received funding support through the Coast Sustainability

Trust II.Since its inception

last fall, Western’s two graduating classes of six have become employed in the North Island forest industry – many of them hired on by Western, with other logging companies interested in future grads.

The Honourable Steve Thompson, Minister of Forests, recognized the first graduating class of Western’s Logging Fundamentals Training Program in an event last fall.

Sitka, Alaska – Members of 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron at CFB Comox visited their counterparts at United States Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Sitka recently for a joint search and rescue exercise (SAREX).

Given the mountainous terrain, rocky and remote coastlines and unpredictable weather along the B.C.-Alaska border, USCG and 442 Squadron members regularly train together to ensure they are ready for potential emergencies, able to mutually support each other in an unforgiving part of North America.

This kind of co-operation was perhaps most famously demonstrated in October 1980 when the Dutch cruise ship Prinsendam caught fire 195 nautical miles west of Sitka.

Crews from Air Station Sitka and 442 Squadron joined other USCG ships, United States Air Force aircraft and commercial vessels to rescue all 522 passengers and crews within 24 hours, all without serious injury.

The SAREX on July 14 further built on this long-standing relationship.

“Working with our sister station to the north provides both agencies

a better understanding of how each does the business of SAR,” said Capt. James Loose, Deputy Operations Officer at 442 Squadron.

“An unfortunate reality is that it may be just a matter of time before there is an air or marine emergency along our shared border, where we will be asked by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria to work with Sitka to provide SAR assistance.”

The day’s training involved Canadian Search and Rescue Technicians (SAR Techs) parachuting from a Buffalo airplane into the water and swimming to a life raft, simulating a response to a marine emergency in which people were in need of extraction by helicopters.

“I appreciated the chance to work with the USCG Rescue Swimmers, see their equipment and SOP’s (standard operating procedures),” said Sgt. Andrew Mackenzie, a SAR Tech who worked with a USCG Rescue Swimmer embarked on a Canadian Cormorant helicopter.

“This type of training is essential for the SAR system. Missions on or near borders have happened in the past and will continue to happen,” said Capt Luc Coates, Cormorant pilot. “I now have a better understanding of their [USCG’s]

capabilities and how they operate regarding helicopters, rescue swimmers and vessels.”

The exercise concluded with a helicopter hoist scenario to a USCG 38-foot boat, providing the Cormorant crew with a small and challenging craft onto which they lowered SAR Techs and Rescue swimmers.

“They conduct hoisting to boats a little differently than us. Learning how the USCG does it provided my whole crew with a few more tricks to put on our back pockets that will for sure come in handy to successfully complete a SAR mission,” said Capt. Coates.
